Super expensive, hardly any choice, rude staff. No ice with drinks, a mug of tea , no saucers? Not a good experience in my opinion.

Used a voucher for afternoon tea Menu’s were snatched away upon us producing our voucher, thankfully the drinks we requested were on the said menu. No smiles or friendly greeting from either of the two visible staff. One of which went to bathroom with serving apron on ! Smallest sandwiches in the world! Bread was dry but thankfully fillings were tasty. The layout of this cafe is just bleak and as in un inviting as the staff. The cakes however were incredible! Always 10/10 but sadly we’d only ever order to take away or for an occasion in future.

After explaining to the staff member that I am a carer and the person I was ordering for has recently had surgery and has an extremely restricted diet so items could not be exchanged we were shocked the chef had replaced waffles with thick slices of fried bread! This was potentially life threatening to the patient who would have choked to death in minutes of they had attempted to eat it. What chef serves strawberries on fried bread? Especially in light of the clear information we gave. We had to re order 3 times and eventually we were told our item wasn't available. They had already removed about 70% of the meals from the menu and we could not eat what was eventually served as it was so badly cooked. I had to settle for just a drink that the staff member spilled all over my partner. Having worked in the food trade myself I was amazed how incompetent the staff were and how truly awful the food was. We will never use this place again.

Ordered 4 cakes today on their 4 for £12 takeaway offer. Choice was limited. I now know why. All the cakes i presume were from yesterday. The pastry on the 2 flans was very soft and the sponge on the chocolate cake was dry. The raspberry bomb though was nice. If in shop i would have complained but on driving 8 miles was not going to return. I advise on not going early if you want fresh cakes.

We visited on a Monday lunchtime - there was a queue outside and you could see empty tables which needed clearing which was a little annoying. Once it was our turn to be seated we were told there was a 35 minute wait for food, but we figured as long as our drinks arrived, we didn’t actually mind. We opted for pots of tea, which came quickly and we were happy. The food didn’t actually take 35 minutes, maybe 25 approx, and that was reasonable I think. We both opted for all day breakfasts, and swapped amongst ourselves to get our favoured picks! It was great quality, well cooked and the poached eggs perfect. No complaints from us at all!

It's no wonder this chain is collapsing. Visited here today with my daughter for our traditional cake and drink. When we arrived we waited for a table no one came to us bit just pointed to a table. We then waited a good while for someone to take our order we were about to leave. Our drinks were made but sat on the counter for so long we were concerned they would be cold when they arrived I touched the cup to see how warm it was and the look the waitress gave me nearly curdeled the milk. We the had to wait for the cakes to arrive. The service we received was awful and I will not be returning

We came here today at 3 absolutely starving, so anything could really please us to eat. Our drinks were nice but our food was awful. My partners bread was soggy and eggs were over cooked, and my sandwich was not fresh at all. It was probably the most disappointing meal we’ve had. Nothing was fresh, and you can taste it. My bread on the sandwich was stale and I didn’t eat any of it, the chicken was not fresh and had no taste, they brought out the wrong leaf of salad, and there was barely any tomato or seasoning. We would not come back to this chain again.

The cafe was quite busy so we had to queue for a while.there were a couple of empty tables which seemed to take forever to be cleaned. After being shown to a table ,we looked at the menu, and our orders were taken quite quickly. My husband ordered Eggs Benedict, and I ordered Welsh Rarebit. My husband enjoyed his meal ,but mine consisted of one very small piece of bloomer, with rarebit topping,a blob of chutney and a few salad leaves. It tasted fine ,but I couldn't believe how small a portion it was! As we were both still hungry we decided to order a cake. It was very difficult to get any ones attention , but eventually we caught someone's attention. We ordered another coffee and two cakes. The coffee was brought over, but after waiting 20 minutes ,I had to ask where our cakes had got to. No apology from the waitress, felt as if we were an inconvenience .

We have tried this place a few times and have yet to find any consistency with regards to meals and service. In fact the only thing that never changes is that you don't always feel you are getting value for money. On this latest visit I had the soup which came with very thinly cut and overly toasted bread which isn't what I tend to enjoy with a soup. Thicker is always best in this instance. My wife had the club sandwich - which she enjoyed - however the fries she had were really dense and had the texture of being undercooked. We are now at the point were we shall be trying other options when we visit the shopping centre.

A busy Saturday afternoon but no excuse for poor service and tasteless food. Seated at our table, pot of tea brought after 15 minutes. After another 30 minutes our afternoon tea was brought and it looked delicious. Sadly it didn't taste as good as it looked! We had been told there were no cucumber sandwiches, not that it bothered us but Tesco had huge numbers of cucumbers on the same day! The mini quiches would have been nice had they been fresh, but they may have been microwaved to warm them as the pastry case was soggy, not just on the bottom. The sandwiches are cut into fingers and contained very little filling. Might be an idea to cut them a little larger so that they can get a decent amount of filling inside. The victoria sponge was tasteless, very sickly ad artificial, couldn't eat it. The chocolate slice tasted artificial, couldn't eat it. Carrot cake was good. The scones were the saving grace, delicious, as was the jam and clotted cream. This cafe is probably trying to provide too large a menu in such a small space, with not enough staff. Oh and they leave cake orders on plates in an area open to the public who might be looking and choosing, I wouldn't want my food left in public, no idea what germs it could be exposed to. Would not return to this branch.

Had a voucher for afternoon tea and took a friend for a treat today. Service was appalling and we waited 15 minutes for them to even bring a drink which were the wrong ones and another 10 minutes for the right order. I asked for a glass of water four times and still hadn't received one when we left the restaurant over an hour and a half later. We were surrounded by dirty tables even when the place had quietened down and the staff were rushed and offhand. We tried to get another coffee and this took a lot of perseverance as the waitress brusquely told us she would be back but didn't return. We eventually managed to ask another waitress and she delivered the wrong order again so another wait for the right one and the food was finished by this time! The tea was okay but I won't be rushing back there again as there are much better restaurants next door.

Had a voucher bought as a Christmas gift for afternoon tea. Chose this particular Patisserie Valerie as we were visiting the area. Thoroughly enjoyed it. We were made to feel welcome by Jo, who was our lovely waitress and looked after us really well. We will be back! Happy to recommend.

We came here for dinner and as a break from shopping. We had the afternoon tea and it was a delight. The food and drinks were lovely. The girl who served us was new it was her first day and she told us so but she was brilliant. Friendly, likeable and served us well. The staff (all men) behind the bar area and a what looked like a chef were not very nice to her and were extremely rude and impatient with her.

Visited today - presume short staffed of lots of tables with dirty pots on. Waited to be seated - eventually shown to a table, ordered 2 drinks and 2 cakes. After 15 minutes drinks arrived with 1 cake and the waitress said our second choice was not available - we declined an alternative and advised that we had been waiting a while for this one to be told quite rudely that there was a 20 minute service time - if we had been told that before being seated we wouldn't have bothered. Five minutes later a different waitress appears with husbands cake. The cakes were ok, nothing special. Won't be hurrying back

Dreadful experience. Arrived at about 4 pm, not too busy. Was shown to a table by a young man who promised to come back and wipe down the table and was never seen again. Sat unattended for about 15 minutes while others were seated and served. The serving staff appeared more interested in gathering at the back of the shop for a little chin-wag. Tried to ask one of the team if I could order and was simply blanked. After 20 minutes I left. The staff just stood and watched me go. Pity. I was on my own but was to be joined by a party of 7 including 4 hungry teenage boys. We went to the Pret a cross the way and were very happy there. All in all shocking service!!!

Arrived at 3.30pm, Christmas Eve. Very quiet in cafe. Waited to be seated (as per sign). Continued to wait....and wait... waiter had his back to us, so eventually we sat ourselves down and I informed him we had done so. Ordered two coffees and one Vanilla slice to share. Cutlery brought promptly and our cake taken from the window and placed on the sill near the window area. 10 minutes passed and it remained sat there. No one on coffee station that even make coffees. What appalled me was the fact that members of the public were coming in to buy cakes and were l bing over to look at them all- leaning over our cake, that was still sat there drying out! To top it off, a lady with long hair and a scarf leant over and her hair and scarf were resting on our cake!!!! The member of staff serving her said nothing!!! This happened again as a male leaned over. 15 minutes in and still no coffee or cake (not that we even wanted it now)! No staff anywhere to complain to, so we left. Very poor service and hygiene practices. Won’t be back.

Patisserie Valerie never disappoint, and once again the service and food at your York Designer Outlet branch was superb. My friend Lesley and I thoroughly enjoyed our drinks... You must use the best coffee beans. Thanks as always.

We had a voucher for afternoon tea and decided to call here after doing a bit of shopping. From arriving to leaving we had a great experience, friendly and attentative staff. We were sat down straight away and order taken for tea or coffee. This was brought within 5 mins and our afternoon tea followed. My only criticism would be cucumber sandwiches, cheese would be a better option. The little cakes and scones, 1 fruit and 1 plain each were so tasty plus a refill on tea. Just as we were finishing our waiter came to tell us that with the voucher we got 4 pieces of cake to take home. These were shared with my family who said how delicious they were. We had a lovely time and would go back again.

Ordered what i thought was a chicken escalope(chicken breast, egg washed and breadcumbed) and what arrived was a piece of reconstituted so called chicken tasting like a poor chicken nugget. At £8.95 certainly not good value.

11.30 on a Thursday morning. We've come in for breakfast before a bit of shopping. I appreciate it's busy but we have had to wait for our table to be cleared, after our order was taken and cutlery brought. The table hasn't been wiped. It's been 15 minutes since we ordered and we haven't even got our drinks!! Lots of people are leaving due to slow service. One couple had even ordered, still hadn't received their drinks and decided to leave. Very disappointed as the food is usually lovely.

This was the first time I'd been of one of this chain. My first impression was the very good system of waiting to be allocated a table so no getting the food and then having to grab a table in competition with others also looking. Here you get seated then order and the food is brought to the table to you so there's not food gloing cold as you wait for a table to become free.

Great cake and good service when you get it, but lots of people queuing up then walking away because there aren't enough staff to clear the tables, seat the customers and serve them.

We went here for a birthday celebration and treated ourselves to the afternoon tea which was served after a little wait. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it - we couldn't actually finish it all but were offered the option of a takeaway box. The staff were very attentive and we never had to wait too long for anything. Would definitely return.

Been going to this place for lots of years. Went this evening & ordered a burger & small nachos with a sprinkling of cheese. I can’t eat much cheese. Order came loaded with cheese & an extra dipping dish of cheddar cheese. When we went to pay the bill & asked for a slight reduction on nacho meal manager took a photo of us & him & a woman argued with us was told I should have taken cheese off. Would they have treated me the same if I was gluten free or vegan . We explained nothing wrong with rest of meal & wine but they got security & threw us out. I have never been so ashamed as I was this evening

We went into the Ivy not knowing anything about it but it looked inviting from the outside and it was cold and rainy and an awful weather-wise day. How pleasantly surprised we were. It seemed to be snooty and stuffy but wasn't. Beautiful atmosphere and the food was delicious. My friend had the 1917 Menu of starter and main: Salmon Rillette with avocado, salad and rye bread and main of Shepherds' Pie. I had a starter of roasted scallops with creamed spinach and potato puffs. The cost: no more than what you would've paid in a neighborhood cafe. And the rose colored ladies' bathroom is beautiful!

Absolutely incredible food and amazing service - came here for my best friends birthday lunch on 04/09 and we were obsessed with the quality of the food, especially at the price point!
