Alfa Tandoori Takeaway in Portsmouth

We had the student meal for £10.50. There’s loads of food and it tasted excellent. We thought it was great value. Thoroughly recommend and would definitely return

Unfortunately from the minute we walked in it wasn’t friendly. That is okay and something to look over. The food however tasted old and clearly not made fresh (this is our cuisine as well we know what fresh is ) the rice as well wasn’t fresh at all. The dhansank was overly sweet and lacked even salt and the one bhjaji as a starter for the student deal wasn’t acceptable. Ultimately we had to throw this food away as it tasted old and lack of any flavour which is a shame because we were looking forward to it. Also why is there a charge to eat in that doesn’t make sense

New one on me. Takeaway with a few tables. No licence so bring your own. Good menu and good food. Excellent value for money. Tandoori mixed grill was spot on! Cheap night out.

Great tasting food, great presentation and friendly staff. The decor is quite old but fine. Portion sizes are on the smaller side and prices a bit high. The student meal is decent value.

Usually very good but today I was lucky not to cut my mouth or swallow a piece of glass that was in my keema naan. Have photos but can't upload them to this review.

Way below expectations and below average. So many better Indian restaurants around.

We went in as a group for an impromptu mid week meal, the front of house guy was welcoming. The food was good, with decent sized portions. It's pretty basic in decor, not really a 'first date' venue and probably does more business as a takeaway. If you want booze you need to bring it with you or pop over to the co-op opposite, but they'll happily provide glasses. I'd definitely go back for another meal.

The price is normal, the food is good, and the quantity is small enough for a child

Alpha Tandoori has been my no1 Indian takeaway for many years! Jimmy and sean used to work here then, Jimmy owning it.. The staff are very friendly and lovely, and the food is 10 stars! Highly recommend Alpha Tandoori.

Basic but the curry is REALLY good. Bring your own beer

Absolutely delicious food. Naan one of the best I ever had. Freshly maid. I'm vegetarian and side dish was created as main just to fulfill my food requirements. Fast and frendly service. Great price. I will definately go back as soon as I'm back in Portsmouth.

Good food, good prices and helpful front of house.

We ordered 4 chicken tikka biryanis and pappadoms. We loved the food and the delivery was on time to Portsmouth Harbour. We are very thankful to have the food on time and very tasty.

Delicious food, this takeaway has been going since 1985 and the food does not disappoint. The prices are all very reasonable with very generous portion sizes. A gem of an indian takeaway in Portsmouth!

Curries are very good, you have to pay to dine which is about a pound or 10% good take away.

Good vaule curry and you can eat in and even bring your own beer

Food is proper Indian, none of this supermarket type stuff some others have. Best in Pompey.

A strange little sit-down restaurant, the Alfa Tandoori earns it reputation with its takeaway service. Good curry at a great price. We find the service there very good too.

Had a chicken curry, never have I ever had a curry with as much oil sitting on it, once I tipped the oil off and got down to the curry underneath I wish I had just eaten the oil !!! Just nip across the road to the co op and get yourself a frozen chicken curry and save yourself the total disappointment that this oil house will deliver.

I have eaten here many times and it has always been the best but not tonight ,chicken very hard and sauce watery not there usuall standards what's happened

On a working overnight staying next door in the Royal Maritime Club I clocked Alfa Tandoori on the way in to the hotel car park and thought i would get a takeout later on after the Champions League football. Popped in at half time to order with a view to collecting at full time. Staff were really friendly and we had some pleasant football banter (i am a Leeds fan and we were in the process of being stuffed by Wolves!). I collected my meal at ten to ten as promised and it was smashing. Really tasty Lamb Tikka Madras and Bhajis with a Keema Naan, great value for money and lots of it! - so much so that it outfaced and went to Brighton with me in the morning and then on to Selby the following day when part 2 became my dinner that night. Couldn't fault it and if I am back in Portsmouth any time I will return!

Where do you start to describe a hidden gem? The staff are very attentative and welcoming. Although there is no alcohol for sale you can bring in your own with no corkage! That alone will save you a few quid. The food is fantastic and I challenge anyone to find a cheaper meal. Military and student discounts are offered on top of the already reasonable prices. We will definitely be eating here again.

Biryani chicken is good Low cost for most of food served here And 1 £ extra for table

The food is by far the best in Portsmouth. Firstly the price for what your paying for the big portion sizes and the taste is what you would expect from a chef that's been in business for over 40 years!!

We stayed in Portsmouth close to the historic dockyard and decided to have Indian food. I knew from years ago that there is a takeaway close by. We choose a lot of different things, like tandoori mix curry, gosht, passanda etc. I asked to get it a little bit more spicy and all was cooked to perfection, freshly and a very good price for the food. Some extra papadam where added for the kids. We had a small chat about Germany and in the meantime the food was prepared, the Naan was baked fresh. To make a long story short, great, even a helping hand to carry the food over was offered. We had no issues with our stomachs! Great Indian food

This place is not going to win any interior design excellence awards. Its all about the takeaway experience. Good curry, decent price. Dishes are quite hot which is always a plus.

Filth had food poisoning from here so did the missusame not even worth 1 star

even though I've used this restaurant before and enjoyed the food, however, I'm very disappointed for them refusing me to eat in because I only ordered starters. I've always ordered mains and ate them in my car as I'm a taxi driver but I wanted to have some soup today and I've ordered rice as well and my bill was £5.60. Not very far from a mains price. I even tried to explain that I have no where to drink the soup. He said that's your problem. Absolutely disgusting attitude. Especially the restaurant was completely empty with all tables empty. I took my money to Bombay express in Albert road and will never go to Alfa tandoori again

Just bland and really not worth your money. I've tried a few times now because it is local and I kept thinking, if I try another dish maybe this one will be better, well no dish is better. The ingredients lack imagination. A vegetarian rice consisted of just mushroom, potato and cabbage. And the all the curry dishes lack depth and flavour (bland). No longer will I waste money there.

wanted a takeaway as we arrived at our apartment late, found this place whilst driving around for local shop and somewhere to get a quick dinner. The food was good and i was happy with the price i paid, they do student deals so my bro was happy with the savings. Got some added extras as their was a group of us.

Had worst experience ever. The manner of cashier and waiter is rude, loud and uncivilized The kitchen is filthy dirty and no ventilation, feels like choking even sitting at the dining table. And finally, had diarrhea the next day. The kitchen needs to be inspected for hygiene issues. Not going to the restaurant anymore, and advise others not to do so.
