Over the past two weeks, we have had the privilege of dining at the very best that the UK has to offer, including Le Gavroche and dining at The Ritz in London. Last evening we dined at Restaurant Eighteen in Windsor, it is without doubt the most underestimated restaurant in the country, the Menu offered by chefs Andy and Ian, is beautifully thought out and balanced, the dishes are a delight in presentation at the table and the staff exceptional. The wine list whilst limited, offers excellent choices. The prices charged for all meals, whilst equal to the very best are ridiculously underpriced. We cannot wait to return again tonight, following Evensong at St George's Chapel. A special thanks also to the Breakfast staff including the Maitre D for looking after us.

The menu here offers better than normal fare: I chose truffle ravioli, my companion had roast duck. This was after bass and melon starters. All dishes were delicious. We were seated at a window table overlooking the bustling main street that passes the castle. Very romantic.Service was attentive, but not rushed. Only slight glitch, not complaint, was that our waitress passed us off to a waiter because it seemed she had trouble understanding American English (not the first time our Yankee talk was difficult to interpret!). We ate here as part of a package with the Mercure Hotel and had the 5 course tasting menu. The food was beautifully presented and accompanied by some lovely wines chosen by the very helpful sommellier. I would say that I almost preferred the wine rather than the food though, some of the choices on the set menu may not cater to everyones tastes (e.g.foie gras, ham hock and rabbit terrine which was nice, but my first experience of eating rabbit, which I will not be repeating) but then I understand with a set menu the idea is not to choose! A lovely dining experience though.

Paid £75 per head for Christmas lunch (four courses). The service was the worst I've experienced in many years. We received our first course of soup before we'd even been given the wine list. The soup was cold and we had to send it back. The white wine we chose was warm and we had to send that back as well. The second bottle was just as warm. The main course and desert were both very average (how can you mess up Christmas lunch!) and took ages to arrive. When paying so much we were expecting close to Michelin standards. What we got was worse than pub food. No one checked to see if we were happy until we came to pay our bill. I was so angry at the end I told the manager precisely what I thought. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Given that this bar is attached to a four-star hotel, you really would expect better service. We waited ages for anyone to come over to our table, and eventually I went to the bar to order. The cream tea we ordered came without tea! When I asked for some, the 'waitress' said "Oh, do you want the tea now?" I suggested that it might be a nice idea! When other people left, tables were left un-cleared for ages, whilst the three bar staff stayed and chatted to each other. After waiting an age for someone to come over again, I went to the bar to ask for the bill. I was told it would be brought over to my table 'immediately', but after a further ten minute wait I decided to go and pay it at the bar directly. This really is very poor for the sort of place it is.

We was booked into the main hotel on a half board basis and so dinner was part of the deal.We had drinks in the bar in the afternoon which were politely served. In the evening we returned to a change of staff, although he was very obliging he talked to much and was quick to critisise head office and the availabilty stock variety!when arriving at the restaurant alarm beels should have rang as there was only one other table there. On being seated we sent back the cutlery as it was badly marked. my partner had the rabbit terrine which was very good, although bread had to asked for. i had the salmon fish cakes, which were lacking in flavour, the garnish was tired and limp and hollandaise almost mom existent.I had the fillet of beef, which cooked correctly, but the parmentier potatoes were rock hard, and the curly kale raw. My partner had the seabass, the portion was no bigger than the size of a credit card and came with no potatoes or vegetables. The waiter did go and get some chips but by the time these arrived the fish (less than two mouth fulls) was finished. The restaurant lacked any atmosphere, the waiter informed us that he had been in sort out the problems, this being the case he should never had accepted any of the dishes from the kitchen. We were told that we could have a free dessert in compensation but would have to pay for the meal as it part of the package.Windsor is a great place to visit with some very good restaurants, so please do not bother with this one.

Hate to write a bad review but I was very dissapointed with 18. I really looked forward to eating in the 2 Rosette hotel restaurant which was #1 on TA. The menu prices are deceptive and overpriced for what you finally get. Advertising 3 course for £25, but then adding a supplement to every course (for example the beef fillet is £8.50 supplement for an unstated size of a steak) is too dodgy. The portion of chips that cost extra as well made me laugh outloud. The food was nothing special, just pretentious presentation with no ambiance around. Our bill came to £139 for 3 courses and a young Malbec. Shame because I thought it would be a real treat.

After reading everything on here I couldn't believe no locals had raved about this restaurant. In fact I was hard pressed to find a local that had eaten there. But on a rainy Sunday when our plans to go to polo got scuppered, we tried a dozen pubs and all were fully booked. When we rang 18 Castle, they were not. In fact, we were the only people in the entire restaurant although Raj assured us this was because he had agreed to serve a special menu just for us. He was very helpful but did disappear occassionally. The starters were lovely. I had the grilled mackeral on beetroot and is was delish. The butternut squash and broad bean risotta had one very small piece of squash and the added surprise of peas (which I absolutely hate and had to pick) out. Wish the menu had warned me. The rib eye roast was good (according to my dining companions although more well done that we would have liked). After a 20 minute wait, we recieved our pudding. we had the sticky toffee pudding which was so over done we needed a knife to cut it. One person had the chocolate fondant which she loved. My daughter had ordered a cheese burger from the children's menu but we got charged £20 which we only realised when we got home. Fixed prix could be a good value but the quality of the food would need to improve tremendously. The decor is a bit tatty and with new restaurants moving in they will need to try a bit harder and step up.

My wife and I visited 18 after reading the great reviews on tripadvisor. I must say that all in all, this place did not seem to warrant the outstanding reviews it has been given. I ordered our starters (mackerel and crispy risotto) along with a glass of the MH Sauvignon Blanc. The risotto was fairly bland and the mackerel was nothing special. For mains, we both ordered fillet steaks medium well accompanied by a bottle of the Malbec and some sides. We received our steaks medium rare and had to send them back. The waitress did apologize saying the chef did not notice the orders were for med-well. Shockingly, we got the same steaks back after around 20 minutes with the same sides and garnish that had just been kept warm (dried out) and put back on a fresh plate. I did not expect this from a restaurant of this calibre. The sides were tiny portions and in my opinion, could easily have been replaced with freshly cooked ones. Other restaurants would have cooked everything fresh again, especially when it was their mistake to begin with. As we were the only people in the restaurant, i expected better.

Raj, the Restaurant Manager, made us (and clearly all the other customers) feel extremelely welcome and relaxed, ensuring the perfect dining experience. He was amusing, knowledgeable, polite and always there when needed but never interfering.Admittedly the restaurant wasn't heaving with people - perhaps because from the outside you worry it is just a hotel lobby/restaurant for guests - indeed we nearly walked past it. After seeing 18 jump the ranks in the Trip Advisor rankings we had to take a peak and see what all the fuss was about. The Mercure Castle Hotel is lavishly decorated and very welcoming. We decided to stop by the bar for a cheeky pre-dinner cocktail. We were greeted by Albert who was given the option to create something of his own choosing. A brief chat and a few giggles later Albert presented us with what can only be described as cocktail heaven. We took these to our table and drooled over the menu. Our jaws almost dropped when we saw that selection of 3 courses were only £25 per head. Service was equally devine, perfectly time between courses, every dish beautifully presented. I opted for the lamb cutlet and accompanied shank. Accompanied with fresh steamed baby vegetables. It's very rare to get good value in a high tourist spot such as Windsor. I recommend this place highly for anyone looking for a great dining experience. Well done to all the team at that made this a very memorable night.

A previous reviewer states that this restaurant is worthy of 2 Michelin stars. Unfortunatly, the previous reviewer has quoted the incorrect guide-book. It is a 2AA Rosette rated restaurant, and there is a vast difference between all fundemental factors in both guides that qualify a restaurant for a 2 Michelin or 2 AA Rosette award. I live locally in Windsor and have eaten at 18 on a few occasions and we've never been disappointed. We tend to go for special occasions as the restaurant has a more upmarket feel about it but to be honest, they do offer good value set menu's so it doesn't have to be saved for that special event. In a nutshell, the decor is classy, the food excellent, the waiting staff friendly, the wine list varied. Its the sort of place where you could really splash out or have a lovely good value set menu. To top it all off it's located right in the town centre opposite the Guild hall.Although the restaurant is formal in its setting, the staff are relaxed and you would be comfortable and welcomed whether you were wearing a cocktail dress or jeans.I would recommed the restaurant to anyone visiting Windsor looking for a romantic meal, for locals celebrating a special occasion and for entertaining clients.
