Harbour Inn

Mid Galloway, Dumfries & Galloway
21/07/2019: The inn was seconds away from where we were staying - The View. It was just lovely. The staff were so warm and welcoming. We went in for drinks and enjoyed really lovely blethers with other holiday makers and locals. We also went in for lunch. The service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch - warm and plenty of it. The food was very well priced and presented.
19/07/2019: Girlfriend and I stopped for a quick lunch after a walk round the costal path and botanical garden. Food was very nice and the staff were very welcoming, prices are good to. Mixture of lite bites and big meals.

Casa Mia

Mid and Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway
19/07/2019: Couldn’t recommend Casa Mia enough, we were travelling up from England to the boat and we came across this restaurant on trip advisor and we were not disappointed that we stopped here for dinner!
17/07/2019: The food was lovely - had starters, main and dessert from the lunch menu and they were great sized portions.

ReadingLasses

Mid Galloway, Dumfries & Galloway, 20-30£
18/07/2019: The review that comes first on Google gives etirely the wrong impression. Readinglasses is a smashing shop, run by good, friendly people and serving delicious snacks. If I lived closer to Wigtown I'd be there every week.
03/07/2019: Wow, what a fab cafe! Best tea cake ever! Rose and cardamom I think, And soup, sandwich and coffee also superb Lovely, if in Wigtown you must eat here!

Brodies

Annandale North, Dumfries & Galloway
21/07/2019: Went online to find somewhere half way to meet some friends. Liked the look of this place and certainly was not disappointed. Made to feel very welcome and even when are friends were running late it wasn’t an issue. We stayed about 4 hours and wasn’t rushed or hurried. Food was amazing and extremely reasonably priced. Worth driving 90 minutes for just for a meal. Had the pate, and risotto and was amazing. So many flavours.
21/07/2019: We called here for lunch on our way up to northern Scotland. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for dinner on our return journey a week later. We again really enjoyed our food and have no complaints whatsoever about that.

THE OLD SMITH

Abbey, Dumfries & Galloway
19/07/2019: Wow, stumbled on this jewel of a cafe, sat outside, with the enchanting view of a wee burn, inside the cafe was a sea of smiley staff. Menu was mouth watering selection of toasties, sandwiches soup just what we needed after our busy morning. Food didn't disappoint :) just wish I had kept room for a cake. There was also some unusual locally made gift wear dotted about cafe.
09/07/2019: A lovely setting for this old smithy extended into a charming coffee shop. The welcome was warm, the service attentive and the food delicious. The owner went the extra mile by actively promoting her village and region by kindly offering guidance and reading material. Highly recommended!

Castle Restaurant

Dee, Dumfries & Galloway
14/07/2019: We were greeted by the chef, Paul , who gave us a rundown of the menu and specials that evening. .For our main courses we had pork fillet with melted Stilton and an apple cream - (delicious,) and salmon with Hoisin sauce.which was another excellent combination. Paul offered my husband a different wine to try with the salmon which was a nice gesture. We had 3 courses with 2 glasses of wine and an alcohol free beer (very good) which we thought it was very good value for money.
12/07/2019: We managed to get a table at short notice in this small restaurant while visiting Kirkcudbright. The service was excellent considering there is only the chef and one other staff member. My dining companions made a better menu choice than me: the pork loin with stilton and apple sauce was so devine, my husband declared it superior in every way to the pork loin he'd had at the Savoy Grill in London a few weeks earlier. I was less happy with my sea bass dish, as I thought the chimichurri sauce was a bit overpowering for the fish. We had the tasting platter for dessert - delicious! It was great to be able to chat to the friendly chef, Paul, and give him feedback on the spot, and the wee gratis liqueur at the end was a nice touch. Would definitely return if we ever find ourselves back in this part of the world.

Auld Alliance Restaurant

Dee, Dumfries & Galloway
30/06/2019: We booked a meal here during the jazz week. It really was a mixture of the superb and the average. First the music. A competent pianist playing tunes from the sixties like "Moonriver" can in no way be described as jazz. It even encouraged a couple of diners to sing along which was a bit cringeworthy. The food was interesting, well cooked and tasty. The starter of black pudding and haggis wrapped in pastry and bacon, in a peppercorn sauce was possibly the best starter I have ever eaten. The main courses were at odds. My wife had the chicken dish which was a generous serving of 2 chicken breasts (but no veg). I had the pork loin which was tiny and came with some rice but also no vegetables. We decided to finish with ice cream after seeing the huge portions served at the next table. Once again we were disappointed when our servings were about half that of the diners on the adjacent table. Consistency of portion size is fundamental and people are going to feel aggrieved if they lose out. I did speak to the chef/owner and he did give us a small discount. Overall I would say that he is a talented chef who serves tasty food but attention to portion size is needed and as for the jazz....
13/06/2019: Four of us visiting Kirkcudbright had dinner here and we all enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Finding vegetarian dishes was not a problem. Members of staff were friendly but I wished that one young man didn't address everybody as 'guys' all the time!!

La Dolce Vita

Nith, Dumfries & Galloway
23/07/2019: Our last night in Scotland on this visit was in Dumfries - not necessarily a major tourist town - we headed into the centre hoping to eat at a highly rated restaurant - but it was closed. We were pointed in the direction of La Dolce Vita, what a great recommendation. Excellent service, top class food. Clearly a popular choice with local residents as well. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
16/07/2019: I have been here on several occasions and I’ve never had a bad meal. On my last visit was with work and we had the set menu, food was lovely and good value for money. We also had the side room to ourselves which was good. Staff are friendly. Prices very reasonable.

22/07/2019: Beautifully prepared food and authentic coffee to sit in or go, the cakes are all so beautifully made and a hard choice to choose. The staff are very pleasant and Maria is such a happy owner and always brings a smile to your face. A must go if your nearby
18/07/2019: Thanks for keeping up both in the entertainment tent and the cafe, kept on seeing young waitresses tracking down the street every day to fill the tent with all your freshly baked goodies.

The Clachan Inn Restaurant

Castle Douglas and Glenkens, Dumfries & Galloway
19/07/2019: What can I say, new menu, stunning new meals. How does Phil, the chef do it?!!!
09/07/2019: This is a busy award-winning country pub. The food choices are varied and delicious, more of gastro-pub with imagination. Both main course and dessert were generously proportioned and tasty. The service was slow but I had plenty of time and was delighted that they found a table for last minute walk-in!

The Restaurant At Blackaddie Country House Hotel

Mid and Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway
05/03/2017: Wow – we booked into this hotel because it was close to the Crawick Multiverse which we wanted to visit. We had read the reviews on the quality of the food but its fair to say the actuality surpassed all our expectations. The review that follows covers the restaurant only - I have reviewed the hotel in a separate tripadvisor entry under Blackaddie Hotel but suffice to say the hotel was great too. We booked on a DBB rate for 3 nights and dinner consisted of an amuse bouche in the bar followed by 5 courses. Every meal was a delight and all the fish dishes in particular were phenomenal . My husband's favourite was the beef 4 ways starter – carpaccio, terrine, tartare and ragout which he reckoned was the best starter he had ever eaten and we have eaten in lots of Michelin starred restaurants both here and abroad . I particularly loved the lobster bisque, the saffron risotto and of course the halibut, stone bass and monk fish dishes. The deserts were wonderful too – normally I'd go for cheese instead on at least one night but the deserts were all too good to miss. Wine list was good too with nice choice of affordable quality wines along with the more expensive ones.
28/10/2016: On holiday in the area and we were looking for somewhere special to eat. Having read the great reviews on TripAdvisor how could we not give it a try. We weren't disappointed . The food was tasty and well presented. Each course was fantastic. It's a restaurant I will hopefully be able to visit time and time again in the future.

Thomas Tosh

Mid and Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway, 45-60£
19/07/2019: Took my mum here for lunch and oh it was so yummy. I had asparagus tart with salad .. delicious. Mum had smoked salmon pasta in a creamy sauce also delicious, to finish if we both had chocolate cake, it’s a must! Would say probably one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve ever tasted. Would highly recommended a visit here and a browse in the shop is well worth it. 10 out of 10.
24/06/2019: Needed lunch whilst driving through Thornhill (my good lady was getting rather fractious!) and spotted reference to this place after a quick search on my phone, otherwise I would never have come across it. What a serendipitous find!
