North Harbour Bistro & Tearoom

Na Hearadh agus Ceann a Deas nan Loch, Eilean Siar
31/12/2018: My girlfriend and I attended the Bistro on a day out to Harris. We had read good things about the Bistro and were keen to try it out. The building from the outside does not convey the delight that are contained within. We eat seafood a lot and regularly eat out and so to experience these unique flavours and dishes exceeded all our expectations. SUPERB ALL ROUND, highly recommended.
12/12/2018: The look the outside of the North Harris Bistro & Tearoom is not revealing the very special cuisine inside. As the building used to be the community shop and bistro, it is not architectural delighting as the the meals served there. But don't hesitate, just walk in. You get all the fresh local fish and seafood not just well prepared, but served as beautiful looking, even better tasting dishes. And as this attracts more and more visitors, be sure to book a table.

Nannys Shop

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland, >100£
07/11/2018: Visited here in October, stopped by for nice bowl of chowder which was lovely and location is really nice but we can't really say the same for the staff, as a group we just felt that they were a bit abrupt at times. One of the ladies who worked there also asked a customer to locate to another table to accommodate a larger group which is really bad I think!! Probably will go back there when we visit again, just to give it another chance, perhaps they were having a bad day.
01/11/2018: Lovely setting and lovely little village but why so expensive? £3.20 for a small slice of cake? Take plenty of cash with you if visiting.

Gille Brighde

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland
06/01/2019: As the road to Diabaig twists and turns through glorious mountain scenery you begin to wonder if there really can be a restaurant ahead. But there it most definitely is, in the beautiful little village of Diabaig set around a sheltered bay, and it has been worth every inch of the journey. Excellent food in a most congenial setting; unpretentious and honest cooking at its best.
17/12/2018: 9 hour walk over Being Alligin in scorching temperature we retreated to this fabulous

The Potting Shed

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland, >100£
17/03/2019: Stopped for coffee and cake and although this was good (and meals being served looked good too) the setting is just the wrong side of quirky and rustic. Restaurant area could really do with a good clean and toilets are basic - accessed past the galley kitchen, the area before the toilets is semi storage + some random deli products for sale (?) It's all a bit bohemian...but maybe that's part of its attraction...
15/03/2019: This is a must go for cake, lunch and a lovely setting for a relaxed evening meal. Wonderful local produce. A must go to if your visiting Applecross

The Bealach Cafe and Gallery

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland
17/03/2019: What a treat to find a business run by an obviously caring owner. Food excellent (breakfast, really well cooked); lovely atmosphere; stunning location (well... it IS Scotland lol); great coffee, made to perfection. Couldn't manage any of the delicious looking cakes. Lovely gallery attached...and I almost forgot...immaculately clean and beautifully fitted out.
22/02/2019: My family and I come to the Cafe often and love it every time. Sharon’s, the owner, is incredibly friendly and is always welcoming. The food is superb and the cafe is beautifully decorated with a amazing view of the Bealach. I would highly recommend this place.

River House Restaurant

Inverness Central, Highland, 30-45£
28/01/2019: We didn’t have a reservation but the owner saw us and squeezed us in. It was my birthday and we couldn’t have been happier with the food and service. We still talk about the happy birthday song which the owner gave us personally!
20/01/2019: Went with a large group of friends and nobody had anything to complain about, well one cold steak which was dealt with quickly and professionally.

Whaligoe Steps Cafe

Land Caithness Ward, Highland
16/12/2018: We found this gem by chance in September when we were doing the NC500. My kids wanted a drink and after going in and meeting Karen the owner, we stayed for food. Were we glad we did! What a find. Karen is a wonderful chef and was so welcoming. After eating her food I couldn't leave without a copy of her fantastic cookery book. The views across the ocean are spectacular. Karen kindly packed us some home made sharing bread to take away which we had with dinner when we reached Dunnet Head that night. Thanks Karen it was delicious!! If you can't visit this place buy the book!
09/11/2018: This place was recommended last year and so when we returned to the area we made a trip to the steps and cafe. The food is wonderful and the hot chocolate with chilli unbelievable. The menu is so different to any other cafe I have ever been in and I was so impressed I bought a copy of the cook book written by the owners. Difficult to find but so worth it.

Temple Cafe

Na Hearadh agus Ceann a Deas nan Loch, Eilean Siar
07/01/2019: We happened upon this place by accident, but were very glad we did. The staff were really friendly, and were able to accomodate a group of 8 with various dietary requirements with ease. We liked it so much we went back a day later for more.
29/12/2018: We stopped at the Temple Cafe for some afternoon lunch whilst visiting the island in June, we had been told of the cafe by a few people we met and decided to give it a try.

The Foveran Restaurant

Kirkwall West and Orphir, Orkney Islands, 30-45£
05/03/2019: I enjoyed a wonderful meal at this restaurant with rooms: my Orkney breaded cheese starter was very tasty and a new experience: my lemon sole main was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and simply spectacular. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. Go, enjoy!
07/02/2019: The restaurant is lovely, and not too noisy, even when it was fairly full. We were seated next to a log fire before we were taken to our table. The staff are very friendly and the food is excellent.

Ferry Inn Hotel

Eilean a' Chèo, Highland
09/02/2019: Make sure you're reserving the right Ferry Inn! We honeymooned in Scotland for two weeks, and both my wife and I found this place our favorite spot. Amazing sea food, live music, and a chill bar to have a pint after the dinner rush. We did not stay at the Inn, but we did stay in Uig, which I recommend.
25/01/2019: Are you taking the ferry from Uist to the outer Hebrides? We did and needed a place to stay. I wish we had stayed here two days! Very comfortable rooms, great sitting room and a wicked impressive bar with very cool Rock and Roll memorabilia (the own is a very cool and fun/nice old rocker). The free breakfast is to die for.. among the best of any we had our entire trip

Glencoe Cafe

Fort William and Ardnamurchan, Highland, <20£
14/03/2019: I stopped here during some terrible weather while on the West Highland Way. The staff was very nice and had plenty of warm food/drinks available. I was allowed to stay as long as I liked. Since the weather stayed crap, i spent the night at the "resort's" bunkhouses.
12/03/2019: A lovely stop for coffee and cake in a hidden cafe. The owner? was a lovely friendly lady who couldnt have been more pleasant Coffee and cakes were excellent and great value for money The oft mentioned birds were a delight.

Glenfinnan Station Museum Dining Car

Caol and Mallaig, Highland
30/10/2018: We came across this place by accident when looking for somewhere for lunch. What a friendly pleasant experience. We had soup and a sandwich which was served quickly and a lovely place to have it. Great.

Kylesku Hotel Restaurant

North, West and Central Sutherland, Highland
16/03/2019: Two of our party had the scallops with kedgeree main. At nearly £28 for five scallops we held our breath a bit. And what a let down. The scallops were presented on individual mounds of the rice. Visually it didn't look great but worse was that the kedgeree/risotto was just dried out rice with a few bits of equally dry haddock mixed in. Almost certainly this was reheated food, it was practically tasteless as well as dry. The scallops were cooked ok but were small. It was dreadful regardless of the price. Neither of us complained or sent the food back as we didn't want to disrupt the meal. Whilst no doubt we would have been offered an alternative, this just shouldn't have occurred. And then considering the price it's even more unacceptable. We certainly won't be returning anytime soon.
16/03/2019: Had the seafood platter which can only be described as average and certainly not what it was 3 years ago. The half crab had no meat in the body only in the claws.

Scorrybreac Restaurant

Eilean a' Chèo, Highland
06/03/2019: What a wonderful little gem run by two brothers the food was delicious and very well executed with finesse and charm. A small menu which means best quality and attention to detail I would definitely recommend a visit if in Portree!
12/01/2019: We visited this restaurant after reading positive reviews but came away disappointed and hungry. Firstly, the service...well to start we were greeted at the door by the waitress who then disappeared into the restaurant leaving the door closing on our faces, not deterred we headed in and the said waitress came back and basically it was just pick your table! A little more attention please! Also when I phoned to book I stated I was vegetarian, no problem I was told just ask when you come and you can have something off the Al a carte menu, this was not the case, when I asked it was like news to them and so stuck to the set menu. We sat at the table at the window, thinking that would be best but no, the restaurant was cold and being at the window did not help and is beside the door which was opening constantly with people coming in asking for a table but they were turned away as fully booked. Might be an idea to put a sign outside advising potential customers of this as it was a bit distracting and spoilt our experience. The food..yes the small portions we got were tasty enough but also some odd combinations in my opinion. We came away still very hungry actually and headed to the chippy which unfortunately was closed!! Not right really after having spent £90! The last thing and perhaps the most off putting to me was the toilet....it was a disgrace, not clean, old fashioned, so roughly finished with paint on tiles etc and just a grubby towel to dry our hands on. All a great disappointment to what was meant to be a treat. And no before you say 'oh you should've brought it up to us on the night etc etc', you know sometimes you just can't be bothered causing a scene and really it should be right to start with.
