My husband and I visited this hidden gem whilst on holiday at Durness. I had the black pudding and my husband chose the soup for starter. Our mains were the venison and the lamb. We opted for chocolate bomb and rhubarb ice cream for dessert - all of which was exquisite! Wonderful surroundings and attentive staff.

The restaurant is in a beautiful old lodge next to Scourie harbour. The food is excellent, and the service is friendly and efficient. I had shank of lamb with oyster mushrooms which was beautifully cooked, and the rhubarb ice cream was lovely. As the restaurant is not licensed you need to bring your own alcohol (which is a big money saving). Reservations are needed, highly recommend booking a table if you are staying in Scourie or nearby or passing through. Surprised (but happy) to find such a great restaurant in this idyllic remote location

We ate here 3 times during our stay in Scourie and found it utterly delightful. The chef is superb and very creative, she blends traditional Scottish fare with a taste of Eastern Europe and is a great forager, using produce from the hedgerows and garden. The black pudding with sauerkraut was truly excellent, and the venison was the best either of us remember eating. Ever. The cheeseboard is good with lots of local cheese and home made rhubarb chutney. The restaurant manger is friendly and efficient and both of them are very self effacing about the excellent business they run here. My father tipped them off that it was our wedding anniversary one evening so they put a lovely bowl of roses from the garden on the table for us. It's unlicensed with no corkage charge, the village shop has a good selection of wines. It's only small so make sure you book, and if you do book, please turn up!

Wow! What a gem! In 6 weeks of traveling Ireland and Scotland, this was probably one of the best meals of our trip. We try to seek out the best/finest dining in whatever town we're in, and this was spot on. The vegetarian starter was amazing - it truly looked like smoked salmon, and the pickling on the carrot shavings gave it amazing taste. We are hard core carnivores, and we loved it. My venison main was so tender and complemented beautifully by the sauce and roasted vegetables. My husband's rack of lamb was beautifully cooked and very flavorful. We don't usually get desserts, but we treated ourselves here, and were very happy we did. The chocolate one is difficult to describe, but gorgeously rich in taste, and the rhubarb ice cream with crumble was also tasty. Service is amazing, given there is only 1 guy for the whole dining room, but he did everything well and promptly. They don't have a liquor license, so bring your own (no corkage fee). They ABSOLUTELY require reservations.

This restaurant is nicely furnished and has a good atmosphere. The chef is obviously good at getting flavour right and that could not be faulted. The problem comes with serving hot food on a slate and serving hot and cold food on the same plate. I also think that the main course had been waiting around for the waiting staff to serve. He had been busy serving coffees and bill paying. The result was that our main course was barely hot. We should have sent it back at that stage. I had the venison and it was served with a wonderful variety of mushrooms in a tasty balsamic sauce. Unfortunately they were served on top of a cold lettuce leaf, which looked good, but very soon the mushrooms were cold too. To sum up, the food looked very attractive, but I would have preferred it served on a hot plate so that I could have enjoyed eating it at leisure. To their credit, we were given a discount when we pointed out the problem.

I came across this gorgeous restaurant slightly by accident having already booked a local hotel for dinner. Something about the stylish interior, friendly couple and inspiring menu made me cancel the hotel and I’m so glad I did. This place is contemporary Scotland at its absolute finest. Deliciously fresh seafood and other local produce but in unexpected combinations setting it apart from other more traditional establishments. My lemon sole ceviche starter was a clever balance of fresh lime acidity with delicious slices of sweet preserved pear. A skilled and delicate hand added just the right amount of chilli and red onion to give depth and punch without over powering the delicate fish. This dish was delicious. I chose venison as my main which was served with beetroot purée and blackberry sauce. It was an equally inspired dish where the red and purple hues and sweet undertones perfectly complimented the rich meat. The charred onion cups with a pool of delicious sauce were a delightful addition, as was the hint of horseradish lending a welcome touch of fire to the beetroot purée. Pudding was a rich and creamy yet surprisingly light chocolate mousse paired with a gently tangy pear cream cheese sprinkled with crunchy almonds... utterly delicious. And finally, although I was quite full, I can never resist a cheese board so 4 cheeses later and I could hardly move but the over indulgence was once again rewarded. This time with a wonderful home made rhubarb chutney, lightly spiced with coriander seeds I think, of which I polished off 2 helpings because it was so lovely.

What an absolutely lovely place-really great cooking, a warm welcome from an attentive waitress, a relaxed atmosphere and excellent choice of music. We had Sautéed Celeriac to start, one main of Poached Salmon with red pesto linguine, another of Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Tuille. Firstly the Salmon was pin-fresh and perfectly cooked-all the flavours worked perfectly-really confident cooking with excellent ingredients. The risotto was absolutely spot on too-really big flavours from the mushroom, the truffle oil and the Parmesan-but all perfectly balanced. Situated in Balnakeil's quirky craft village (a cluster of refurbed 1950's MOD prefabs), this is a laid-back shed of a place, but appearances can be deceptive. The restaurant has simple but on point decor, parking available outside or near by. It was easy to find and a short walk from Coco Mountain. If you are fussy eater or have allergies etc. Perhaps this might not be the place for you as their menu is understandably limited given how fresh it is. If you doing NC500 or stopping at Durness, I would say it is worth a visit.

Booked a table here explaining I have shellfish allergy and prefer to eat very plain fish, ideally white fish. Gentleman I spoke to on the phone said no problem there would be hake or halibut but he would check with his partner. If neither were going to be available he would call me back. No call received and when we turned up was told no reservation either. Very limited menu with 2 out of 5 starters not available! It was suggested I maybe have lemon sole as my plain white fish for my main course. This was served on a rocket salad and was the size of a starter not a main meal. The restaurant was very cold, not the pleasant evening I was looking forward to. Wish I had been told we would be waiting 45-50 minutes to be served would have gone elsewhere

Stumbled upon this place - The Whale Tale looking for a late lunch. The guy was friendly and helpful. We all had soup to warm up which was tasty and warming. Only got one half a slice of homemade bread with soup which was delicious but would have been better if there were two. Cafe decor is light and bright. Cash only

Unbedingt vorher reservieren.

Small menu and all fish, but it's more about quality than quantity. I went during the height of summer and was lucky to get a seat without booking, which was surprising as Durness is in the middle of nowhere.

This is a tiny beautiful place, a little bit difficult to find, hidden in an old post-war military base. It is worth the trip!. Staff is very friendly, they have mainly seafood, deliciously cooked. Nearby there is a big sandy beach and great landscape.

The whole set up of this restaurant is so interesting. The food was excellent - mainly seafood plus good vegetarian options. Bring your own bottle!

This is a fairly new restaurant in the craft village at Balnakeil. This village was built as an early warning radar station so the 'architecture' is somewhat basic. The French Onion soup was not what I expected -not clear and dark but light coloured and of a thick consistency- but delicious none the less. We shared the 'special' appetizer of Camembert and my husband had couscous. The chef is Czech - perhaps the reason for the interesting soup. Definitely a unique dining experience!

We can really recommend this small restaurant in the Craft Village of Durness. Fresh and delicate seafood in a very simple, but lovely room, nice staff with a good taste for music - and it is possible to bring your own bottle(s) of wine or beer (they didn't serve alcoholic beverages due to some permission not in place).

Just a small place, tucked away, with a small menu and fabulous food. The home made lemon ice cream is a perfect dessert!

An unpretentious gem with absolutely delightful staff and food to match. Everything was delicious, presented beautifully and quite a surprise as the Whale Tale is situated in not the most convenient or congenial position. Don't let this put you off.

Myself and my husband visited The Whale Tail twice for lunch with our black Labrador. My husband had the Cullen Skink both times and loved it. Food and home made lemonade was very good and they even gave our dog a couple of treats so he was not left out! Good place to eat and would recommend it.

The Whale Tale was recommended by our B&B; hostess, and we were very grateful - we ate there nearly every night of our stay in Durness. BYO, fresh ingredients, small but excellent menu, charming and enthusiastic young staff.
