Kaffeehaus Amadeus
Lanchester, County Durham, <20£
30/05/2021: Cosy cafe with plenty of choice such as pancakes and waffles. The staff are both friendly and make you feel welcome. Worth a visit if looking for a cafe to stop at.
23/01/2021: Since lockdown 3 started my life pretty much revolves around going for a walk and finding nice places for a hot chocolate with my daughter. This place does the best I’ve had in ages. Lovely friendly staff and great cakes too ☺️👌

Café Lavender
Nairn, Highland
25/08/2022: We read about this cafe (somewhere) and thought it warranted a visit. How right we were.
The weather was fine so we were able to sit outdoors to enjoy our frankfurters and fine German lager. The meal was excellent, the lager even better and the service was perfect. Needless to say, we were more than pleased with the whole experience. The menu might be slightly limited but only because the items on offer are so well prepared that less is more. And the service was attentive without being overbearing. A great place for 2 ex-Canadians to take a break from the streets of Nairn.
If you're in the area make sure you find time to visit.
11/08/2022: Delightful German couple run this lovely homely café. On entering there was an aroma of freshly baked plum cake/streusel which was delicious.
Good selection of loose leaf teas.
Salad good.
Very clean. Wish I were local!

Katja's Cakes
Lerwick South, Shetland Islands
12/02/2020: Having walked up to Sumburgh Head lighthouse on a cold, rainy and windy January day, there was nothing more welcoming than the sight of Katja's coffee and cake bus. As it was just the two of us, we actually sat inside and spent a very pleasant half hour chatting to Katja and enjoying the good strong coffee and the very lovely cake as we sheltered from the weather. If you are visiting the lighthouse, definitely grab a coffee here, it's quirky, she's lovely and the coffee and cake are top notch.
13/09/2019: Having completed the steep climb to Sumburgh Lighthouse ahead was the welcoming sight of Katja’s waggon called in to provide sustenance for weary travellers while the cafe is being refurbished! Despite gale force winds we huddled down behind a stone wall to sip our fresh coffee and homemade cake. The views make it all worthwhile. Definitely a ‘must-do’ experience while on Shetland.

The German Hot Dog Stall
Ealing Broadway, Ealing
10/08/2021: Yes yes yes!!!! This is a hidden gem in London. Delicious, traditional sausages and german food! I always get the bratwurst with cheese and potato salad! Stunning! Wonderful little place!
11/03/2019: I had the original bratwurst with fried onions and sauerkraut. There is a wide range of sauces available and you can help yourself. Normally when in Germany or Austria I have it with a sweet mustard which wasn’t on display but I asked anyway and yes, they had it and we had a little chat about mustard. Nice food, nice staff and very good value for money.

Olovers
North, West and Central Sutherland, Highland
17/07/2023: This is marketed as being a burger van/ fast food place, but it is a lot more than that! Definitely the best meal we have had in Scotland this summer! Absolutely delicious food, great value and very friendly service. Our lunch was hot, delicious and came very quickly. Would definitely choose this amazing little gem over any sit down or take away restaurant anywhere that we have been.
06/07/2023: What burgers, what a guy, what a view!
We stopped on the Kyle of Tongue bridge for the lovely views, spotted Olovers van and decided to have lunch.
Food cooked fresh, the best burgers we’ve ever had. A great choice of flavours, a bit different, and all can be varied for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegan which was a rare treat for the vegetarians in our party!
The friendliest guy too, best lunch stop on our trip!

The Hop Hatch
St Peter and the Waterfront, Plymouth
03/08/2023: Great range of drinks to try from. I love the vibe of the market, it’s gotten so vibrant, especially on Saturdays! We often try a bit of everything at the market and sit with a cider from Hop Hatch who are happy for us to sit at their tables even with food from other stalls. Super friendly and make for a great Saturday afternoon.
29/07/2023: Pleasant surprise to see this in the market! Local beers and ciders!!! Really enjoyed being able to try beers that I wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to try. Lovely service, too!

Whitchez
Queen's Park, Brighton and Hove
20/03/2023: Can't wait for the opening of the new Whichez restaurant in the Lanes. Really missed the food. Always a great experience all round, friendly and good value. It will be interesting to see the new menu. I hope it's close to what they produced before. It was always difficult to choose as I had so many favourites.
12/08/2022: This restaurant is the most fun place to go in Brighton. Great food, a vibrant atmosphere and the people are just lovely.
Book because it is small and gets full and don't miss as it is everything you could want for a great evening. They even serve early so it is possible to do something afterwards. I love them.

Ffynnonn Boutique Hotel Restaurant
Dolgellau South, Gwynedd
04/05/2019: Whilst it may be unusual to preorder a meal for two, it was well worth it as the meal was incredible. It is one of the best tasting meals I have ever had. If you can go, you should
27/01/2019: Since I only live locally, I cannot justify a stay at Ffynnon, but after realising that they do evening meals for non residents, I decided to try it out.
I booked Ffynnon for a special meal to celebrate St Dwynwen night (the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine) and my wife and I were certainly not disappointed. Since Ffynnon is a boutique hotel and meals for non residents are pre booked only, the whole experience was very personal. I was contacted after my booking asking if we had any special dietary requirements, and on arrival we were shown into the lounge to be served drinks and an appetiser besides an open fire. When we moved into the dining room there was only one other couple present, and the service was attentive but not overwhelming. The food was of a very high standard, and certainly lived up to the location. Would definitely recommend as one of the best, if not the best fine dining establishments in the area. Perfect for a special occasion.
