Having walked up to Sumburgh Head lighthouse on a cold, rainy and windy January day, there was nothing more welcoming than the sight of Katja's coffee and cake bus. As it was just the two of us, we actually sat inside and spent a very pleasant half hour chatting to Katja and enjoying the good strong coffee and the very lovely cake as we sheltered from the weather. If you are visiting the lighthouse, definitely grab a coffee here, it's quirky, she's lovely and the coffee and cake are top notch.

Having completed the steep climb to Sumburgh Lighthouse ahead was the welcoming sight of Katja’s waggon called in to provide sustenance for weary travellers while the cafe is being refurbished! Despite gale force winds we huddled down behind a stone wall to sip our fresh coffee and homemade cake. The views make it all worthwhile. Definitely a ‘must-do’ experience while on Shetland.

Delicious home made and also hot snack food and drinks. Very welcoming for us as the weather was wet and windy when we were there. Katja entertained us with information relating to Shetland. Also the lighthouse did not open until 11 and we arrived around 10am. Katja provides gluten free options - cherry flan was lovely.

Excellent, cakes and coffee all from a van situated at Sumburgh Lighthouse. Hot traybake was very welcome. Seating is limited, but atmosphere very good. A great site to have such a friendly and warm welcome.

After getting off the plane in Shetland we headed straight to Sumburgh Head only to find the cafe is closed for the whole season, we decided to walk to to the light house anyway and found the amazing unken wagon which supplied us with scrumptious cakes and possibly the best hot chocolate I've ever tried.

Super coffees and selection of tasty morsels. Not overly priced. A caravan right at the entrance to the Lighthouse. Outside tables.

The hot chocolate is amazing! The cakes are delicious and Katja is lovely! Not a lot of seating space inside the wagon but the bench seat is comfy. Breastfeeding friendly so if you need to feed your little one it's a nice place to sit and feed while enjoying some lovely hot chocolate . We will be back soon!

After seeing the puffins and lots of other seabirds, we each had a piece of cake and a coffee. Cherry pie and mandarin cheesecake both scrumptious! The coffees were equally as good. Well worth the walk up to the lighthouse!

I have been in a few times now for an on the go snack/lunch. Having tried a number of Katjas recipes over the last few years I can’t say I have ever been disappointed. Great friendly service and an unrivalled quality of product. Definitely one of the best bakers in Shetland. Good variety daily which often include gluten free options.

I bought this beautiful cake for my husband’s birthday as he adores Katja’s cakes. They never disappoint. I only wish I knew the secret ingredient to that mandarin gateau 😍😍😍 She makes a mean coffee too 👌

The absolute best place for breakfast in Shetland. The food and drinks are delicious, and beyond that, the people have hearts of gold. I stopped in one morning before a tour, wanting to get a Diet Coke and the credit card machine wasn’t working. Christiane gave me the Coke anyways and said don’t worry about it. Me! A complete stranger. And when we went back for another breakfast (and I was able to repay her), I bought a bunch of scones for our travels the next day. As luck would have it I lost them somewhere during that day. I went back to Pete’s to ask if I had left them there. No joy. After re-walking the entire town I gave up and came back to buy a sandwich for the next days travels. When Christiane give me my bag she said I’m out of the kind of scones you bought this morning, but I put in another one with jam and cream to make up for it. They are so kind.

We had driven around the north of the island and stumbled across this little gem. We had delicious sandwiches and totally sinful cakes. The tearoom is lovely, warm and homely and the staff are so friendly.

We found Hand Made Fish, the croft smokehouse of David Parham, a true delight. David smokes salmon that he carefully selects from Orkney and Shetland fish suppliers. He is passionate about smoking salmon to perfection, and what counts most is to always improve. Our visit to his smokehouse in Bigton, Maywick, was a unique food experience. He told us stories, explained the smoking process and offered us a fascinating tasting experience that learned us how different the pieces of his artisan salmon taste: tail, head, side, body. What a discovery! Everyone of our family, adults and kids, really enjoyed David’s stories and his wonderful smoked salmon. Simply the best salmon we ever had! A few days later we had the luck to also taste David’s smoked haddock he was so kind to deliver us in Lerwick. We poached it in butter and milk, ate it with potatoes and poached eggs, and loved it!

We are often in Yell and Unst for day trips or camping and a friend had suggested to go to Isle Eat. We went for a late breakfast and an early dinner on the way home. Great family service. Very friendly and helpful. Excellent portion size for the price due to the cost of living. Will go every time again. Many thanks 🙂
