First time visit to Paws for 5 , had an excellent morning Kaiser our 18 week old Rottweiler puppy throughly enjoyed himself. We both had a lovely fried breakfast, tea and Lattes at very reasonable prices.

This used to be a wonderful place to visit, all members of staff were friendly, the food was always piping hot, well portioned and very reasonable. It has undergone a few changes, one being the name - now named "The Lighthouse by Poppies". It seems the new owners have made a few changes, the decor has been vastly improved, however there are couple of new members of staff who just aren't as friendly. Furthermore, the quality of the food is terrible compared to all our previous visits. The chips which used to be absolutely wonderful are now terrible - I'm not certain if a different oil is being used, but the quality is just not there, and the meal was also served warm as opposed to hot. To add to this, the prices are much more expensive, even a can of coke is £1.50 - a can that came from a multipack! I'm afraid what was a regular place and a highlight of Seaham has now been crossed off the list. Finally, a "Traditional Turkish Breakfast"... It's an English cafe for goodness sake!!!

We went into Downey’s intending to get some tea as a group of friends. We were very surprised that none of the staff even acknowledged us entering and left us standing wondering what the situation was. By the end we decided to attempt to sit down to which we were just told the restaurant wasn’t open - this is fair enough and we may have given our business for a takeout order had the staff been more pleasant and not made it obvious they were trying to ignore us as much as possible. Due to the unwelcoming atmosphere and being made to feel like a nuisance for simply entering the shop we decided to take our business elsewhere. Won’t be returning.

Hi I'm a regular at the Black Truffle in Seaham... I pop in with friends for coffee and sometimes a nice cake or 2 .... the staff are great... very friendly and always have a smile on their faces. The food is 2nd to none and fairly priced and would recommend a visit. You can also get your drinks to go...

Looking for a different Sunday Lunch venue, I remembered reading about The STapylton Arms being taken over after a closure. A lovely cozy room awaited us and we were shown to our allocated table by a friendly member of the waiting staff. Menus perused, we opted for the Belly Pork and Brisket of Beef. Both meals promptly arrived accompanied by a selection of fresh vegetables. The meals were delicious, really tasty. My partner commented that her beef was melt in the mouth, my belly pork too was lovely. We had enough room for desserts, my choice NewYork cheesecake, my partner had the Apple Tart, again both lovely. Perhaps the only small gripe I had was there wasn’t a huge choice of selection for the Sunday Lunch menu but we also looked at the other Fayre on offer midweek and decided a revisit is a must.

My friend and I tried Bells yesterday and have to say that I will carry on going to Downey 's across the road. We expected a menu with a smaller portion option or an expected Pensionr Special. The prices were far too high and no choices of cod bites or anything smaller, the tea and coffee was also a rip off.
