The best restaurants serving British food in Verulam St Albans East of England

A beautiful setting by the water on a sunny evening, 1st was the house red wine which was delicious followed by an amazing 3 courses, The organic beef short rib which was a delightful & one of the best starters I have ever tasted ( please make this a main course) I then went for the rump of lamb which was cooked to perfection & then finished with a knickerbocker glory! What a treat!!! Our waiter Daniel was excellent & very attentive & knowledgeable about the dishes he also kept our wine topped up, we will certainly return so we can sample more of this superb menu, thanks for making our Saturday evening a memorable one.

What an outstanding experience this was !! 5 star dining at its best. The atmosphere and service were second to none, however the food was the star of the show ! Even the sourdough bread with burnt butter was a joy! I had “Onglet” in a Chimichurri sauce , it was tender and tasty and perfectly described by our waiter Ryan. Sticky toffee pudding had to be the best I’ve tasted and I’ve eaten a lot ! Wine choice by the glass was amazing , white, rosè or Red all too classic wines. How lucky this restaurant is our local ! Memorable evening, highly recommend

Beautiful ambience which is what pulled me into the place walking past. Lovely staff and service, I would have stayed only that I was going for dinner. By the r time we left it was full up with a lovely buzz about this place. I am not local but will definitely return again to try more drinks and the food. Highly recommend

Had my 65th birthday lunch here . There were 9 of us and I was delighted to find that we were seated in a private dining room upstairs . It was absolutely perfect . The food was very good , well cooked and good value . Everyone had a wonderful time and the staff were very friendly and effective . The restaurant is definitely a step up from say a gastro pub /bistro . But without being in the fussy fine dining end of eating out . I you have a small lunch/dinner party then having one of the private rooms makes for a delightful experience that I can heartily recommend

Held a wake here recently. Great location and venue and staffing all pretty solid as well. Cannot comment on the rooms directly but generally hotel is very well thought of

Recently revisited an old favourite haunt We’d been regulars but 2.5 years ago had a bad experience with a new manager who treated us badly on an ad hoc visit- so haven’t dared to go back Today we did and for lunch with my Mum Felt a bit awkward but The Manager who was on duty Sam , was very welcoming and kind to us . It was quite busy for an early slot on a Saturday. Our drinks and food were quickly served and good quality. Would like to thank Sam and the team for their exceptional customer service and making it us nice today

Service was good, but let down by the food. We had the Christmas Turkey meal and the food was cold. The sausage was also not cooked properly. Great beer, avoid the food.

We went on last Friday Lunch and served by a young Lady during a very busy Lunch post Christmas, everyone is a bit tired she really looked after us and made a special effort to put our Hollumi Chips and Whitebait in take way tubs. They were both really tasty. The bar man made me lovely Bloody Mary. I wish everyone there a great New Year! Nick.

Great Sunday lunch. Huge portions. Lots of choice and great friendly servers. Thank you will definitely be back.

Been here a few times and it is a very nice setting - though a bit hit and miss in terms of how busy it is, so perhaps have a backup plan in mind if you are unlucky and it is one of their busy times. A good selection of fresh cakes and hot food. Coffee is generous in quantity but I would echo some of the other reviewers in suggesting it could be stronger - however I accept this is a matter of personal taste so perhaps more a comment about me than this venue :) Staff are very diligent, efficient, pleasant and polite. As a footnote: I don't know whether the cafe is responsible for the toilets - apologies to them if they are not - but the facilites have been woeful on our last two visits. Their condition is the fault of those using them but whoever is responsible for them needs to evaluate their use and adjust their cleaning schedules to accomodate!!!!!!! My review score is for the cafe (minus the toilets).
