Best pub in St Albans - and there's quite a few to choose from! Friendly bar staff and a dartboard. Great for a quiet drink with friends and the pizzas and toasted sandwiches are spot on.

An amazing pub in the heart of historic St Albans. The staff is super friendly and brilliant. The atmosphere is great and the food is superb (they had delicious home-made pizza with fresh basil). I’d highly recommend this pub to anyone around!

The pub just changed hands last week. It is a bit dated in places and much of it needs attention. The new staff are experienced and friendly. Good luck guys.

This wonderful pub is the home of CAMRA. The first branch meeting of the Campaign For Real Ale was held here on the 20th of November, 1972. As you'd expect, the Ale was excellent and in good condition. Service was fast and friendly. It was also great to see the local CAMRA members enjoying a good pint in a fine venue.

I had to go here as this was the first pub where Campaign for Real Ale was formed and you can tell how the pub must have looked years ago bas it looks like it hasn't changed much. Good little stop after a folk festival and although this place was quiet, I had a nice chance to relax in peace nibbling on my twiglets snack with half a pint to refresh myself after some water. Toilets are outside in retro style however they are clean. I hope others shall pay a visit here

On my third stay-over visit to St Albans. Madge found another locals bar just outside the city centre. Great vibe. Had Young's bitter...long dead from Wandsworth but alive as a Zombie beer. Still pretty good. Who TF brews it now? Great L shaped bar. Would move here if we had the odd million to blow on a modest house!...and OMG..this is where CAMRA started about 2 years before I first joined!

Probably the most traditional ‘boozer’ in St Albans, as can be seen from the photographs. I haven’t had to go outside to the toilets in a pub in many a year! The clientele is primarily locals, although the atmosphere is welcoming. Three/four well-kept ales on draught; had a good pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord. Branded as McMullen, although I didn’t see any of their ales. Definitely worth supporting ‘proper’ pubs such as this one.

Ever since I was 7 years old (40 years ago) I’ve seen this pub my whole school day life and never been in here, my dad used to drive past it all the time with me in the car, we were spending the night in St Albans and decided to visit. The staff are friendly especially the landlady, my fiancée remarked on the ladies toilet which has to be seen to be believed, very nicely decorated apparently. The locals are friendly and welcoming. My old headmaster used to drink here a Mr Stanton but unfortunately no-one had heard of him. Shame I’ve waited so long to visit I’ll definitely try to come back if I’m in the area again.

My friends and I visited this pub on the off chance and we were graciously met by the regular visitors who were more than happy to play a game of darts with us and the bar staff set it all up. A lovely atmosphere makes you feel very welcome and was a lot of fun.

I can't believe you guys are still there! Happy that you are! I used to work up the street at a company called Boston Trust and Savings about 30 years ago. The Landlord was named George, and he was a great bloke, but a little rough around the edges. He had a fun lunch ordering system that confused everyone that had never been there before and got annoyed if they didn't understand it. Loved George, the food and the McMullens beer. So happy this place is still going strong!

Lovely little locals pub which suited us very well for the pub crawl we were doing. Had a nice atmosphere where it seemed everyone knew everyone, they also had a nice little selection of beers. The only downside was they did not accept card. Would still recommend.

I used to visit this pub often in the 70s when it was the unofficial HQ of CAMRA (they were based in St Albans). It was then a flag-waving defender of real ale. We popped in the other Sunday and, thank goodness, it's still a no-nonsense, locals' pub with good beer. It has so far escaped the dreaded make-over from the teenage 'pub designer' who goes round the country wrecking pubs. We will be back.

Have not been in this pub since 1996 and it was a regular of mine and my friends in the late 1970's. It has not changed one bit - even to the point we recognised some regulars from back in the 70's! The are less and less "real" back street pubs left, but The Farriers is just that. No frills, no evening grub, just drink and good company. Ok it is a time warp, but all the better for it. Hopefully it will not be so long before the next visit.

This is what a local pub should be: small, friendly, with small food menu (at lunchtimes only I think, anyhow no-one was eating in the evening) and a selection of good beer. Several groups of people were sat around playing cards and dominos – the pub even has its own backgammon league table and a TV that was showing sport. The pub is nicely decorated and is worth a visit and a pint.

I have drank in the Farriers for years and it is a great pub. It is always full when sport is on TV which adds to the enjoyment of these events, especially when watching football, rugby, golf etc. Everyone is friendly and the occasional new drinker has suggested that regulars are standoffish which I don't believe is fair. I was welcomed there as a Newcastle fan much to everyone's amusement and we even have a Wolves fan and a Sheffield United supporter ! I have drank there now for 30 years and it is my second home. Also the home of CAMRA and where it all began.

This pub is in the back streets of St Albans, no owned by the Landlord, was originally McMullens, this is where CAMRA was started, a real local community pub, serves 4 real ales, McMullens Country 4.3 abc, Betty Stogs from Skinners brewery Cornwall at 4.0 abv, Tribute from the St Austall brewery and Citra from Oakham at 4.2 abv all in great condition, as well as lathers and bottled beers. Food is available on request, not Monday's but call to book. This is a must when you visit this area, a great old place with good atmosphere and friendly locals, unfortunately no parking on site but multi story nearby.

Perhaps it doesn't distinguish itself from the many great pubs in St Albans, but this is a pleasant place to spend an evening. Good beer and ambience make it a fine drinkers' pub. Arguably it was where CAMRA was founded, over a few ales of course. Worth a stop off on any pub crawl for that reason alone!

Decided to try here for a change and was massively let down by the poor quality beer and cider. Atmosphere seemed alright, obviously it's a very 'local' pub where everybody knows everybody. In hindsight should have complained about the drinks as the beer tasted like water and the cider was just plain awful. Won't be going back anytime soon.

We had high hopes for this tucked away village pub but none of us could really garner enthusiasm during the course of our meal. I am sure this little pub has great potential, however. It was not busy at all...1/4 full but the food service was slow. We got the impression that meals were being cooked per one person per one table at a time, and below the standard we would expect for a simple pub meal. Salt snd pepper squid was over cooked intead of being lightly golden. Fish pie was dry and the leafy greens served were not cooked and inedible. Atmosphere lacking any warmth. We also agree from previous comments, that this pub is overpriced. Overall disappointed and we won't return.
