St.Villa in St Albans

I booked an igloo for a surprise bday about 6 weeks ago… only to be cancelled by voicemail at 1.56pm on the day… 5.5 hours before the booking! To say we were fuming is an understatement.

Another wonderful evening at St Villa. No need for any menus: wild boar ravioli. It's a Tuesday, you can bring your own wine, no corkage charge, so a great rioja I'd got from Cellar Door Wines . We sat inside the restaurant, rather than in an outside pod, as previously. Sadly, it was otherwise empty. Times are hard, but this restaurant deserves support. Great service, as ever, from Stefano.

This Italian restaurant has a really good ambiance. The welcome and service was very good. Our set lunch was delicious, with enough choice. Portions were really large, so our friends shared desserts. The fish was extremely well cooked and tasty. Wine by the glass was good value.

This was my first time back since Covid. We took St Villa over for a lunch for 34. The food and service were exemplary. Working with Pablo the manager to organise and plan the event went smoothly. Many from my Club have commented on the freshness of the food and said it was the best value for money lunch they can remember. I will be back. Well done the St Villa team. Strongly recommended.

This restaurant was booked for a 30th birthday dinner. The restaurant it self was beautifully arranged to accommodate our family and friends. The food was sooooo good and well presented, and plenty of it! The restauranters, managers, waitress/waiter worked tirelessly to making sure we had the best time. Thank you, what a great evening we had. Will definitely be booking again, I need to try something else from delicious menu!

Really nice restaurant, the décor is quite fancy so I think would be a great place for some special occasions too. The food was really tasty and me and my family have enjoyed our dinner there, definitely will come again soon.

We been this restaurant on Tuesday, When i booked table,i asked candle on my partners dessert. They didnt put candle on dessert, they just served it,nothing special. Next day when i checked my bill ,and i found out that they charged me full price for bottle of wine.normally you pay half price for bottle of wine on Tuesdays... I gave them call and lady answered the phone.she said she is the manager .but when i asked her name ,she didnt want to gove me her name.when i told her like they charged me full price for wine,she said they dont have any offer like that.i asked her to check st villa Web site. After she noticed that actually they do half price wine on Tuesdays.can you believe that you are a manager and you dont anything about your own offer.and then she told me ,their boss told them, if customer doesnt ask for offer ,charge them full price. Can You believe that? Which kind of excuse it is ? Unbelievable,, If customer come to your restaurant, you add your special offer automatically to their bill.thats it ,simple..if you go this restaurant please ,before pay,check your bill....be careful,,,,

Not our first visit to St. Villa although the last time was before Covid. Lovely restaurant and great food. The interior of St. Villa is tastefully decorated. The tables are nicely spaced out which I really like. You don’t feel like you are sitting on top of each other as you do with some other restaurants. We had the 2 course set menu at £16.95 each as we were eating at 5.30pm. We both had the calamari to start and then my husband had the calf’s liver and I had the tortellini. All the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was great although TBH as we were so early we were the only ones in the restaurant. We have been there when they were busier and we have never had an issue with the service. We’ve previously sat in the pods outside and they are lovely too. Sat in one in December but it was still nice and warm. Forgotten how much we liked this restaurant and we will definitely be back. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

My wife and I went to this restaurant as a fall back from our originally intended option. We knew nothing about it at all. We both were pleasantly surprised with the restaurant itself which is arranged over two floors with a mezzanine open gallery floor. The service was slightly slow because the restaurant was full but it was definitely worth the wait. Our starter was a deep fried fish assortment that was served with a chilli source that was delicious. My main was the Rib eye Steak which was cooked to perfection accompanied by french fries and a extra side order of tasty zucchini. Our dessert was also excellent - a Chocolate Brownie which was not too sweet with a scoop of ice cream. For a night out for two on Valentines - coming out with change of a ton was very good value. I will definitely be booking again!

I visited St Villa today with a large group of friends to celebrate their birthday. I was informed in advance that there would either be a group menu from £30 or an individual menu. I chose my main and starter from the main menu which resulted in a bill of £24. The food came out in good time, however the calamari I ordered had little taste and was on the firmer side. The aioli sauce was the only saving grace. The tortellini again had little taste and I was very unsatisfied with my meal. At no point did anyone check with me if my food was okay and if I needed any assistance. As it was my friends birthday I decided I didn’t want to make a scene and would just pay and leave. When it came to paying I was informed I would be charged £30. I explained that I didn’t order from the group menu, and that I chose food from the separate menu. It was argued with me that regardless of what I chose I would have to pay the full £30 as I was with a group. I explained that this was not explained to myself and that I was in fact confused and a couple of other individuals did not have this issue and were able to pay for their food (not on the group menu). Again, not wanting to cause a scene I simply said, that makes no sense but fine. I paid and left. I am very disappointed with the overall experience and will not be returning

Had a lovely meal in a pod for my daughter's 40th birthday. The food was delicious. Our waiter Giovanni was brilliant. Highly recommend

My second time in two months back to St Villa yesterday and I'll be back in December. Never eaten in an igloo before, they are a very warm way to make you feel like your eating outside when its too cold to do so. I went for the bacon Tuesday Italian dish which was delicious, but the time before I had the wild boar pasta which I'd recommend even more. Thanks Stefan for the top service. Made a return visit to St. Villa, after enjoying it last month. Even better this time, as on a Tuesday, you can take your own wine or get 50% off theirs. Great food and service, sat in a warm igloo, no jacket required. Highly recommended.

Having planned my birthday meal at St Villa months in advance for 14 guests, I was astonished to understand they wanted to apply a £3 per person per cake slice as my best friend provided as a surprise cake. This was only told to my friend as the cake was bought out and I had blown my candles out. The total charge was £42 for all guests, which was over the total service charge. The staff didn’t handle the situation well and as a result myself nor my guests will never return to this restaurant. As a local St Albans resident I find this shocking and quite frankly very sad.

Booked a two hour outdoor table on the terrace. Nice enough with heater to keep the chill off. Although just booked for drinks, we did order snacks as well. My pint of larger arrived and was about an inch from the top of the glass (the top of the glass marked a pint). When I asked for this to be topped up I was made to feel like I was the one in the wrong rather than the waiting staff rectifying it themselves. No apology offered. Just after 17:30 we order 4 cocktails. At 17:45 the cocktails still hadn’t arrived. We then had to ask again at 17:55 with the cocktails arriving shortly afterwards. Our table booking expired at 18:00. Despite not being asked to vacate our table early (as our friends on an adjacent table were because ‘the next booking had arrived early’) we were astounded to find an optional service charge of £18 added to our bill. Given the service we opted not to pay this and we were then made to feel like we had under paid despite having paid the full amount prior to service charge. Apparently the service had t been great because there was a shift changeover... not our problem! I feel this place has got a great setting and product but the customer service is severely letting it down. I expected more for the prices they charge. Good customer service costs nothing but may go some way to ensuring that customers opt to pay the service charge rather than not.

Food was amazing. Couldn’t fault it. Although wasn’t happy with some of the service. As soon as we arrived we were told we have a limit of 2 hours, then as we were seated we were told again we only have 2 hours so best to order 2 drinks each. Then AGAIN hour later we were told we cannot have desserts because another table is booked. We were looking forward to this meal out for a friends birthday and were rushed the hole way through it. We’re being very cautious about eating out because of the pandemic, but when we walked past the other day we noticed they had erected some Eden-style transparent geodesic domes on the terrace outside, so that people can eat in their own private pod. We decided to try this out and booked dinner. It was dark and raining when we were there but our pod was warm and softly lit, and with the rain pattering on the plastic it was lovely. The staff popped in and out extremely briefly so it felt very low risk. The food was delicious and there was a good vegetarian/vegan selection. Slightly pricey but would highly recommend and we’ll go back there for our anniversary.

We were really looking forward to our first meal out without the kids in quite a while, but unfortunately were left quite underwhelmed. My wife ordered Sea Bass for her main course and there were so many bones in it she had to abandon it halfway through. This was mentioned to the waitress, but nothing done on the bill to account for it. The desserts were extremely average, with the chocolate brownie coming out more like a sponge cake, not moist or rich at all. Overall, for the price, there are many other places that offer better food in the area so unlikely to return.

Double date in the igloo. Warm and cosy! Matta and Kareem (sorry for spelling) were fabulous, warm and friendly waiters. Couldn’t do enough for us. The food was delicious! Atmosphere was great. Definitely going back and it’s an 30min drive from our home! Thank you both.

We went to St Villa for our granddaughter's birthday. She is vegan and found plenty to satisfy her, my wife and I had seabass, some of the best sea bass we have ever had, accompanied by a fine Greek wine. The staff were helpful, friendly and very patient with a pair of old dodderers. The restaurant is light and airy and the atmosphere was excellent. The usual Covid precautions wee in place including no going to the bar but this did not distract from our overall enjoyment. One little problem was that the restaurant wifi was not working, but the general reception was adequate

We visited for the first time for my daughters 21st birthday.Having booked a pod, we were delighted to be in such pleasant surroundings - comfortably warm on a windy evening.The set early bird menu was great value although a little limited for our vegetarians and disappointingly there was no pistachio or salted caramel ice cream even though we ordered early so went elsewhere for dessert. Overall I would visit again as the Tuesday bring your own wine made it great value!

I Visited here With a group of friends and the experience wasn’t great from start to finish.I booked a table via the internet, I then received multiple emails and calls asking to confirm, multiple times. It seemed very badly organised and the women on the phone didn’t seem to know what was going on. On arrival we ordered some cocktails to start, they asked for our food order and we said we hadn’t managed to look at the menu and was starting with a round of drinks. Before the drinks came we were asked a second time to order food, being pressured to make a decision, we’d only been sat down 10 minutes. The drinks finally came 20 minutes after ordering them, they were nice but 3 of us ordered the same cocktail, all filled to different levels, mine being under half full. I mentioned it to the waitress who just giggled and said she would mention it to the bartender. We then noticed a group of waitresses and the manager all talking and obviously pointing at our table, which made us feel extremely uncomfortable. We decided against eating there and advised the waitress we would be ordering another round of drinks and then leaving. Again, the drinks came out at different times and after another 20 minute wait. On receiving the bill we were also overcharged. I mentioned this to the waitress who apologised for the mistake. We then split the bill between a few of us and the waitress kicked up a fuss that they was we split it was 50p short (they had added a £10 optional service charge) I mentioned that the service charge mentioned it was optional so surely the 50p wasn’t a big deal. She advised the service charge wasn’t optional (despite stating optional on the actual receipt) so we paid and left feeling uncomfortable and potentially lied to. Overall not a great experience and didn’t even get to get the food!

I had looked forward to visiting St Vila for a while, especially the outdoor pods. I couldn't fault the waiting staff - they were efficient and friendly and it was unusual to sit in a pod.The food was on the pricey side, but there was limited vegetarian / pescetarian options. I asked for the monkfish, but without the ham and was told it was pre-prepared and they couldn't take the meat off. This was surprising - it obviously isn't cooked freshly to order ! I opted for the mushroom risotto, but most of the other options were meaty. Quite a few of the dishes were unavailable due to a busy weekend.Deserts were not as described. The homemade shortbread turned out to be a fairly cheap sponge finger biscuit that they admitted came from the supermarket. The Irish creme brulee loaded with exotic fruit turned out to be an ordinary brulee with 3 raspberries on too.We paid £25 a head for 2 courses (with the Eat out to help out discount) - although the meal was OK, I had hoped for better and it certainly wasn't good value for money. We had hoped for the set menu, but this too was not available so we had to eat a la carte.

Lovely staff and good service. Food was well presented and tasty, good wine selection with huge glasses which are always the best! Atmosphere was good and the restaraunt was full. The only thing I would change was the menu variety especially different cuts of steak which I am sure I saw on the website just not on the menu itself.. but I am sure that the menu is due to covid. I would definitely come back! Pistachio ice cream was amazing at the end!!

My partner and I visited during the week as our first post lockdown meal out. We had seen photos of the lovely terraced area so thought the space outside might help us feel more relaxed and at ease. We saw lots of great reviews so decided to treat ourselves to someone a little more expensive. The starters were nice enough. I had the lamb ribs and he had the hummus, nothing special. They were both pleasant enough. The mains were incredibly mediocre, nothing special about them and they were a little bit bland. For the price we expected more. The desserts were not very nice at all. I had a lemon posset with shortbread. It came with a a stale lady finger cut in half instead of the homemade shortbread I was looking forward to and had split. The bottom of the dessert had so much lemon zest inside I can only assume it was the bottom of the batch and got ALL the zest, it was inedible. The waiter and waitress were really nice and friendly but the service was a little slow. With all the new changes though that’s not a big deal and they did a really great job. If the prices weren’t so high and my dessert wasn’t so bad then it would have been fine but our expectations were much higher and with so many amazing restaurants locally we wish we had chosen to eat elsewhere. We sadly won’t be returning, even though we both really really wanted to enjoy it

Can't fault the food or drinks at all - the best I've had in a long while. Service was excellent, sun was shining and the table on the terrace perfect. Would have been five star but for the toilets. The first female toilet I went into, the lock was broken. The second one was fine but when I went to wash my hands the basin started overflowing and the pop up plug wouldn't pop up so I had to unscrew it to let the water out. On top of that the hand dryer wasn't working and there were no paper towels to dry my hands. My husband said the dryer wasn't working in the mens loos either. Wouldn't put me off going again but a five star experience would include a satisfactory visit to the toilets.

We have always had a great experience at St Villa. We went on 5th July at 6.15pm and it was almost empty, it did start to fill up by 7pm but still social distancing was maintained strictly. The staff were very attentive and we felt very safe there. The food was exquisite, we ordered a few different starters and side dishes and they all came very quickly and were piping hot. We would recommend the Black Sesame, Ginger and Honey Lamb Ribs, and the Fresh Burrata, absolutely divine. Will always return to St Villa, have sat inside and outside and both have been great. Last time we went, we sat outside in January and weren't cold at all.

Lovely food, but absolutely freezing which ruined the meal for me. Sat wrapped in my scarf and told the waitress I was freezing, but no heating was turned on and just a constant cold breeze blew through the restaurant. Won’t be going back again in the winter.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch. Sat in one of the outside pods, a lovely experience and the service and food was brilliant. Very helpful as we had a small child. Been here a few times now and has never disappointed.

My friend and I visited St. villa for a pre-Christmas brunch in the igloo. We were sat in there with another table of 2 but it didn’t feel that you were sat on top of one another. There was a small fire in there which made it feel cosy but it was very hot!! The service was friendly, rather slow at times but I think that was a good thing as it didn’t make you feel rushed to leave. The food was really great, lots of choice on the menu and it was all cooked to perfection. Usually places would just focus on the igloo experience or the food but St. Villa has managed to do both very successfully. My friend and I were planning our next trip here when we were still eating! I can imagine this place can get booked up way in advance so make sure you reserve an igloo for the full experience - you won’t be disappointed!

Were given a voucher for 2 people as a Christmas gift. Can really recommend this restaurant. The staff were excellent, friendly, interested and knowledgeable. The menu was varied and had plenty of choice. We had never been here before but we will definitely return.

Just had lunch here after going to the cinema and pleased we picked it Although the menu looked a bit pricey, we went for the two course set menu and it was pretty good value We chose to sit in one of the outdoor pods - which was really nice as it is early January, but it was warm, they provided blankets and the door was zipped after each member of staff passed through - meaning it kept cosy. The food was lush - I had Cured salmon and duck Ragu and my girlfriend went for the soup and tortellini - really lovely flavours on all the dishes and all really hot and well presented. The inside of the restaurant seemed clean and nice, but didn’t spend much time in there so can’t really comment over much. Lovely attentive staff and quick service. Would definitely consider a larger booking

Enjoyed eating here as part of a group of eight just before Christmas. We booked one of the pods outside and feared it might be cold. It wasn’t. The pod was warm, with just the odd drop of rain/condensation to keep you on your toes. The pod was great and made everything feel more personal. Service was very good, being attentive and accurate and the menu had something for everyone. Be aware though that this restaurant is pricey and probably at the top end of most budgets. Nice as a special occasion, maybe a bit expensive for casual dining. I can’t comment on the interior of the building as we were in the pod from start to finish. Looking forward to going back.

We had a table booked for 6.45pm on a Saturday night for 4 of us. When we ordered our food we had a slight surprise. 10 minutes after ordering they returned to say that they did not have any Burgers left. What where they going to do for the rest of the night I do not know. To top it off this was not the only thing that they did not have. I think they need to touch up on the quantities as the restaurant was fully booked all night so there would of been a number of diner who would of been disappointed. On another note we did have to ask for our drinks orders on a number of occasions. Either forgot about them or didn’t write them down. They did give us a complimentary round of drinks as they understood we did not have a good service.

WOW!!! Highly recommended that place. Food is incredible in here!! Service was bit slow but is completely understanding with full house! This what we get on plates! you not get anywhere around. Beautifully presented and very taste! Chef doing very good job there!

Went to see Judy at the cinema & thought we’d try St Villa. The food was excellent, I had the mushrooms followed by the r@ck of lamb. The price was ok but being a Saturday it was packed & noisy. 2 hours to get served 2 courses was a bit long. I can not fault the food but if I go there again it will be during the week.

Although the food wasn’t bad there wasn’t enough of it for the price we paid.

Very good quality food! Food cooked to perfection. I would recommend crab cakes & prawn linguine. Châteaubriand was shared by two people and coo to perfection!

The quality and presentation of the food was very good, but this was let down by slow service. The excuse given (two large parties on the night), just suggested that the kitchen couldn't cope with a full house. We were offered free desserts as a result of the slow service. The room was quite noisy and the table was next to people standing/sitting at the bar, which was a bit annoying.

Visited St Villa on a busy Saturday night. The food is good but the service let's it down slightly. An example being that we ordered the grill for 2 which had to have a change due running out of beef I believe. We ordered a rocket salad on the side, but it already came with a rocket salad the waitress was unsure of the adaptation and didn't suggest a different side. Small quibbles, but we could also see that other diners were waiting long times for their meals, leading to complaints The tables for two are also quite small, leading to glasses being knocked off by diners. However, the food we ordered came in good time, was very tasty and definitely hit the spot. Lobster cocktail, harissa lamb and the grill for two. No complaints. Maybe they were under staffed on the occasion we visited. It didn't spoil the evening, but would we return or possibly return to the Prime Steakhouse for the same type of fayre. I would say the latter wins out.

This is what a good restaurant experience should be like, but unfortunately, seldom is. 1st the atmosphere, decor & ambiance was spot on. 2nd the food was the best we’d eaten for many a long day. Superb & put many more expensive restaurants that we’ve tried to shame. But probably the most impressive thing was, that we had cause to complain about the slow service that we initially received. The way this was dealt with was second to none, including complimentary drinks, a reduction in the bill, & a meaningful apology, none of which were prompted by us. Sad to say that this is very unusual in this day & age, but fully deserving of an honest 5 star review

Nice ambiance & decor. Inviting menu. Service poor. This was the theme for our visit. Not sure if I'd return. Very haphazard service. Waitress unsure what was 'on' or 'off' menu! She seemed really under pressure. It was expensive for 2 & when paying top notch prices I expect top notch service.

What a GREAT find St Villa is !!

I booked an outside igloo for my birthday celebration with friends.

Dinner for six one Friday evening.

This proved to be an excellent destination for our family group of twelve. the oldest person was 75 and the youngest 06. All tastes were easily satisfied. Staff were attentive without being obtrusive and the food served (made on the spot) was good and plentiful. Good nearby multi-story parking.

The best food in St Albans!! Highly recommended!! Not cheap but worth to pay!! Good job st villa. We been served by very good waiter lots of fun! I think Mata. Visiting few times and never let down!!
