An unexpectedly great restaurant, with interesting and beautifully cooked food. Great service, wish we could still eat there!

Stopped here for a quick snack before going to Alfred’s Tower. Ben was such a good and friendly host and offered delicious coffee and cake especially the carrot cake. Highly recommended!!

Great little pub, tones of character from the decorations to the people enjoying their selfs there. Stopped for a sandwich and toilet break which they were able to pack us the sandwiches on the go.

Very welcoming and a warm atmosphere on a Tuesday evening. Relaxed and friendly reception from front of house. Excellent varied menu with creative dishes. Steaks are a showstopper!

Fantastic pub. A very warm welcome, a great log fire and a fabulous menu. Two of us had lunch and we went with the burgers - meat and vege were both delicious with great onion rings and chips. The whole menu had plenty to choose from - lots of fresh/local ingredients. The owners couldn't have been more friendly/helpful and we will happily go again.

I decided not to order breakfast, but a slice of cake. Came out of a fridge & nowhere near fresh. The coffee disappointing. They offer one price on the internet, but arrive there and the prices highly inflated. Overall the place looks run down, inluding the adjacent tat shop which looks closed down. Dire need of a manager

I wanted to book a special night out for a birthday celebration and decided to try The Botanical Rooms at The Newt. Having read the recent reviews, I was a little concerned about the variability, but need not have worried. Lovely location, stunning building and a lot of effort had been made with the lighting, both inside and outside as we walked from the car park. We were guided very efficiently through all the menu choices, the girl let herself down when explaining the local nature of the menu firstly tried to tell me that Colchester is 'local' and then that it is on the south coast! She followed this by telling me that the 'locally caught fish' was from Brixham in Dorset! I corrected her and unsurprisingly she stayed clear of us for the rest of the evening! Fortunately, after this the evening improved. LeLe was our waiter and he was fantastic. He was very knowledgable and gave us plenty of good advice. We had the 3 course menu at £95 each and were very pleased with all three courses. We ordered a couple of extra sides with the main course. The Rosé wine by the glass at £12 for 175ml was moderate. I had the on-site produced cider at £6 for 375ml bottle, this was very good. The starter / main course food was excellent, the deserts were not on the same level, but nothing that we would complain about. We thought that the service was excellent. The final bill (inc service) was £254 which we thought was reasonable given the number of chefs visible in the open plan kitchen and the lovely ambience of the dining area. For our next 'special occasion' dinner locally, it will be a toss up between here and the Clockspire!

25 of my family booked this lovely pub for our annual Christmas get together on Sunday 17th November, as we chose halfway from all of us to meet up. Always a gamble when you book somewhere you not been before. Well, the Hunters Lodge Inn did not disappoint. It was really busy at 1:45pm, we had a whole section to ourselves, tables laid out, we put crackers on and had a corner for all our Secret Santa gifts. We asked for a rubbish bag so we could clean up afterwards. Jade was truly professional and a credit to the pub, she looked after us all. Service was amazing considering it was so busy. The food (carvery) was so tasty, hot, lots of it and served to you by a really lovely man. Everyone that worked here showed they really enjoy it. Car parking was fab and a lovely park for the kids. Thank you so much from us all and we look forward to seeing you all in 2025. Our new find 😃

After reading the negative reviews on trip adviser we decided we were going anyway and we weren't disappointed yesterday we had to wait a little while for food yesterday the staff were running around trying to keep everyone happy and doing a great job while doing so. Food was excellent relatively cheap eat and drinks give it a try they've definitely got busier over the past few months.
