Zim Braai in Poole

Went here for a saturday date after walking past many times. Booked for 9pm as only slot available. Ordered starters and mains. Starters took an hour to appear- chicken skewers awesome but flat bread dry and dreadful. Mains appeared about 30 mins later, some aspects great but peanut curry was so bland and pap with main was so dry!!! Won't bother again

The service was excellent. My friend and I had a very attentive waitress, and the overall atmosphere was great. I feel this is what Zim Braai excels in - proving great service. Having been to both their Bournemouth and Poole restaurants many times, and have tried different things from their menu, the thing that I always felt let down is the food. Presentation of the food always comes out great, but to me, it feels lacking in flavour / seasoning. I really want so much to have a meal and leave saying it is the best ever, but each visit always leaving me feeling like the food was sub-par and food portion could probably be a little better too. The chimichurri on the fish adds nothing to the dish apart from colour.

Great place, who honoured our DINE app booking even though they are not members anymore. They are trying to get themselves removed from DINE app but it’s proving difficult!

Feel quite bad writing this review as never usually complain unless I feel really necessary. I have visited this on restaurant various occasions when visiting the area. I have also recommended this restaurant to friends who have also visited. However I visited several days ago and on this occasion it was very disappointing. The overall service from the waiting staff was fine. The staters were nice and cannot complain here. However the mains were really poor and not at all up to the usual standard. My partner had the nut and chickpea curry as had this meal on a previous visit and it had been great. However, on this occasion it was really watery with no taste or substance to it. I had aubergine steak which I believe costs around £15. I understand restaurants are putting up costs due to energy bills, wages etc etc, however I literally got a slither of a tasteless aubergine and a afew French fries and some limp salad leaves. I felt totally ripped off at this. I would have usually put this down to a bad choice, but the price did not reflect the meal. I did not complain to the waiting staff as I am not one to start moaning and shouting at waiters. I will just not probably ever visit again, which I feel is ashame!

The food was great and a really good kids menu too! The service was exceptional and really friendly! The restaurant also has a lovely atmosphere too. Can’t wait to go back!

Took sister for her Birthday dinner. She has just arrived from South Africa and wanted to treat her to a taste from home. What a great choice. The Poole restaurant was beautifully decorated and the food the best I have had in a long time. Micaela is a real asset to the business. Nuno was the most hospitable host, having lovely chats with us throughout the evening, we felt in great care! We were seated by Oleg who was attentive and were continued to be served by Micaela for the remainder of the evening who was just so sweet! Definitely recommend and will be back :)

We were warmly greeted by the waiter who served us - he was friendly and knew his stuff. We enjoyed the gentle background African music. Starters were fresh and generous, mains interesting and tasty (mine a very healthy-looking ostrich steak). It was early evening, so quiet, but the agreeable and carefully lit decor made up for this. Will go again!

On 1th February we went to Zim Braai, Ashley Cross, Poole. We had an excellent experience. We had a friendly greeting; were offered a complimentary glass of bubbly and were generally made to feel welcome. We enjoyed our meal. I had the lovely Zimbabwean Dovi, rice and Crispy Zim Greens. My husband had the Mauritian Fish Curry, served with rice and we added Fresh Zim Greens to it. They were both delicious! We then had some yummy puddings tool Altogether, we had a memorable time and we are sure to book our special occasions again with Zim Braai.

We came for a works dinner and wow, everything was amazing! We were looked after by Nuno and Sabina and they couldn't have done more for us! They had fantastic food recommendations and when our meals came out everything was delicious! Can't wait to return again soon!

This is a great restaurant to go to. The atmosphere is buzzy, the staff friendly and attentive. We tried the ostrich steak ,it was delicious the flavours were so good, have also had the potjies too again packed with lovely flavours.,very tasty. Make sure you book it can get busy.

Needed a pressie for valentines for my hubby and realised this restaurant was doing delivery for we ordered rack of ribs and durban curry and it was delivered on time and piping hot. It was delicious and a great way to celebrate in these unusual times. Cant wait to go back there when they re open. Thoroughly recommend them. Great service and delicious food

My absolute most favourite go to place for fabulous food, exceptional service and a vibe I've never found anywhere else, and Covid-19 safety protocols that are strong but discreet. Can't wait for you to reopen ☺️

As an ex-South African, I was somewhat apprehensive about visiting this restaurant wanting food that reminds me of my upbringing. I needn't have worried! Let's start with the service: We received a very warm welcome. The receptionist made a big fuss of my son's assistance dog, which immediately put us at ease.The menu is varied. The dilemma is what to choose! Two of us settled for Cape Malay curry and one for the Durban curry. I also ordered Pap. The food was outstanding. The service quick and beautifully served.Puddings: on offer yesterday was milk tart and koeksusters. (A very traditional Malay recipe) both were absolutely delicious.We had coffee after the meal - people will tell you that I'm the fussiest coffee drinker EVER - so I'm always very wary of what I'm going to receive. Let's just say that the coffee was EXCELLENT! I wish now that I'd had a second or maybe a third cup. Smooth and perfect.If you want to experience a tiny bit of African cuisine, this is the perfect place to get the best of both worlds.

Service wasn't great but added a service charge to the bill.The decor was lovely and looked like it should of had a great vibe but didn't. Kept having to ask for more drinks.. to me that does not warrant an added service charge by the restaurant. Food very standard. Prawns overcooked and chewy. Ostrich bland and warm. Lamb tagine very disappointing.. really spicy hot.Drinks.. avoid the mocktails! And the cocktails.Total waste of £200 and had really looked forward to going there.Worst meal we had! However for me the worst thing was the service charge they added for poor service..

My partner booked this and it was amazing. The portion sizes are generous, definitely recommend the vegetable samosas as a starter. I had the swordfish steak for my main and he had beef curry, both dishes were delicious.The staff were friendly and efficient, very helpful too as we needed a taxi to get back and they arranged it which meant not standing out in the cold for too long. It is very covid safe!Oh and not forgetting a lovely espresso martini and thank you for the bailey shots!

Omg, first time having a cocktail here. The forager may be tiny in size, but like a feisty female it packs a (delectable and delightful) punch. I think I've discovered my new favourite cocktail

Such a great Covid safe environment! We felt very safe on arrival, with Test & Trace, sanitiser freely available, and social distancing well organised. A very well run outfit indeed. Service, food and price are all well managed.Recommend menu items - the prawns are to die for! A steak to follow is always a good idea and totally delicious.

Group of 4 for dinner, though only time we could get booking on the Saturday was 5.45pm. Unfortunately one of the party had chicken, which as a previous review had observed, was raw inside, so a replacement was requested & received. My main course was ostrich, which was good, but my companions had curries, which they found rather bland. The deserts were good, though choise very limited. The bill contained a 'discretionary' service charge, though no indication of this was made before bill was issued. Good staff attention, but at these prices & a very limited menu, I wont be rushing back.

Loved the choices on the menu, I had the ostrich steak which was delicious and my husband had the beef curry. Lots to choose from, great service would definitely go again. Thoroughly recommend for great food and great atmosphere

This cuisine was unfamiliar to us but the staff were happy to explain dishes. The vegetable samosas were four times larger than anything you get in an Indian restaurant and the starter was two each. Lovely deep fried crispy batter with a spicy vegetable filling was really good. The sardines were equally good, skillet baked. The main courses were generous. As a group we tried the sausages, the burger and the grilled harissa chicken breast. Everyone enjoyed what they had. The desserts were equally good and typical of the region. These days it’s important to add word about Covid security. It’s a safe place to eat with customers politely asked to wear masks when moving around the restaurant, staff with face protection, disposable menus and tables safely sectioned off from each other without losing the atmosphere of the place. A really enjoyable meal.

Food was nice, however, sadly one of our mains came out with raw chicken. Another dish was cooked as a replacement but the sauces (which had touched the raw meat) were put back on the plate. Starters and desserts were nice. We saw a young chef sat around not doing a lot except for wiping his nose with his hand - not great to see in a global pandemic. Sadly our experience was tarnished by being served raw chicken. When we were given the bill, we were told they had removed the (discretionary) service charge as good will, which was a bit of an insult when it’s discretionary. Overall, it wasn’t a great experience and sadly we wouldn’t go back.

Zim is fantastic! Really different from most restaurants, lots of choice. Great ambience and staff are friendly. You have to try the ostrich steak!!

Went early one Friday evening, staff excellent, very informative and attentive. I ordered lamb tagline which was extremely flavoursome, my minor criticism is the amount of lamb, only about six small pieces, but I am not sure how much meat should be in a tagine. Otherwise, a very enjoyable meal, lovely food and atmosphere and reasonably priced, would definitely return.

Amazing staff, incredible food. I went out for a nice lunch with my friend and this place was the best place I had ever been to in Bournemouth!!! Can not recommend this restaurant enough to people!!! Very clean and lovely decoration 10 out of 10 for me !!!

We called for drinks but noticed the amazing food being served and were really sorry that we had already made previous bookings elsewhere. If we are ever back we will definitely go here to eat the food looked scrumptious.

Went to ZB for dinner with my wife and we were not disappointed . Service was very efficient and friendly. Food was spot on and the ambiance of the restaurant was great. We will definitely return in the near future.

So pleased that we live so close to Zim so we can call it "our local". Second meal last night since the re-opening and it just gets better and better. Lovely decor, excellent service and delicious food. As I said to Charli last night I think the vegetarian food is even better than when they first opened. A great night out, thank you!

We had a superb meal at this lovely restaurant tonight and just had to leave a review! The food was sublime!! I honestly cannot recommend it enough!! The ostrich steaks were melt-in-your-mouth exquisite! Excellent service, so warm and welcoming - without a doubt, we will revisit soon, and often!

Food was great, prices were reasonable but the service wasn't very good. Plates were cleared off our table before everyone finished eating after every course, at the end of the meal we were told someone was waiting for our table and asked to leave. We were constantly feeling rushed and didn't enjoy our evening because of it. Will not be returning

My boyfriend and I ate at Zim Braai for his birthday - it was just fantastic. The waitresses were lovely and super attentive, whilst clearly following all Covid-19 guidelines. To eat we had the Chicken Wings, BBQ Ribs and both had Ostrich Steaks as our main - this is by far the best food I have eaten for a long long time: delicious, high quality and authentic. I would highly recommend Zim Braai for any occasion and like to thank them for a great evening!

Once you enter you'll see artwork showing off the beauty of the continent; at the table where I was sat there was a bow and arrow from Zimbabwe hanging up above me and my family. The drinks have interesting Africa themed names like Witch doctor or Cape Hope and at this restaurant I tried Ostrich steak for the first time, honestly it was better than normal steak. The food was delicious and the African style looked great, from all of the little pieces of memorabilia scattered around and artwork on the walls. The two chefs are Afrikaaners and you can look into the kitchen to see what food they are cooking or talk to the friendly owner who tells you all about the restaurant. The food is mostly based on South Africa but there is food form other African countries too, by the way Braai means BBQ. Bring some fancy clothes and come with your family and friends, you'll have a delicious meal and enjoy great atmosphere.

Faced with a free evening, we jumped at the chance to spend a night at Zim's new restaurant in Bournemouth. A slightly late request for a table but they fitted us in as a table of 4 on the terrace.Greeted with smiles and menus, the restaurant was buzzing. Our table on the terrace was secluded and cosy, with patio heaters to keep everyone warm. Covid measures were obvious and we felt quite safe and distanced from neighbouring diners.Our waitress was spot on, friendly, informative of the dishes and great with recommendations. Starters came out promptly, beautifully presented with mains following when we were ready - Fillet steaks and Ostrich steaks... the food was delicious!Highly recommended, if you're looking for a restaurant in Bournemouth with great staff, food and atmosphere visit Zim, we'll be back! :-) !

We ate at Zim Braai last night and were delighted with the experience. The food was delicious, high quality and authentic. My wife is South African and can be very critical of European attempts at her home country's cuisine. She was very impressed. The koeksisters were better than any that we've eaten in South Africa. There is a great choice of food. Even our normally fussy children had plenty of options. Finally, the service was outstanding. The enthusiasm of the manager towards the food was wonderful to see. When someone shows that much passion for their business - you know that you're going to be well looked after.

Three of us came in for dinner and it was our first time. Waiters knew the menu wetland could explain items we weren't sure about. But above all, the flavor and quality of the food was the best bit. The atmosphere and drinks were great, but we all agreed we could have done a main made up of starters because they were so good. If we could have fit more in, we would definitely have stayed for pud.Looking forward to going back.

Being a regular visitor and moving to the area shortly I had wanted to eat here for a while as it had been highly recommended by friends, then came lockdown. However the week after reopening we finally got to visit. The staffwere friendly and extremely knowledgeable on dishes and explained in detail when we were stuck for choice! The ambience was great with a friendly buzz. Food was excellent, served promptly and delicious. If you visit one restaurant in Ashley Cross (and there are many to choose from) then make it this one. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!. Can’t wait to come back!

I can't begin to describe how disappointed we were with our Zim Braai experience. We were a group of ex South Africans and Zims with frequent experience of eating in Southern Africa and we were excited to find a restaurant offering this cuisine. The samosas did not resemble anything that I have ever eaten in the Cape, the ostrich steak was tiny, dry and over cooked (it was deducted from the bill) and the potjiekos was utterly tasteless. I left most of mine. This restaurant would not last long in SA where the quality of food in restaurants is high. The decor and atmosphere were great but a big thumbs down for the food - sadly! Service was also very slow.

5 stars isn't even enough to rate this amazing restaurant. Being South African myself, I was so happy to find a restaurant that serves all the familiar dishes that I grew up eating. The service was excellent, everyone was so friendly and I loved the fact that you could see all the flames from the braai in the kitchen. I had a bunny chow the last time I was there and it tasted exactly like the traditional South African bunny's I used to always eat. Well done Zim Braai for everything you do, if I lived in the area, I would go there every week!

Whilst visiting the area we were delighted to see something different and new on the restaurant scene.Immediately booked and were absolutely delighted we did. Everything from the moment you enter was thought out with regard to current situation and the front of house team have really got it together well.The food was also exceptional - my daughter said that they were the best samosas she's ever had. The main's were excellent too.All in all we decided that this was the best dining out experience that we have had as a family for a very long time - Highly recommended

Our first visit and can't wait to return. Some absolutely favourite SA dishes and so well executed and full of the right flavours. A lovely welcome from the staff, well presented restaurant and the menu offers a great selection of drinks and dishes. Can't wait to return to work our way through the menu!

The food is really good except their salad dressing. I ordered the chicken skewers for appetiser and they were ok. For the main course, I had Durban beef and it was exceptional! My husband ordered harissa chicken and they were amazing as well. We will definitely go back there and it is highly recommended. Good price. Good location. Good ambiance. Great service!

I had some friends come down from London to visit & they were keen to try the South African inspired food at Zim Braai as a change from your regular offerings (Thai, Italian, Indian etc). We weren't disappointed. The food was spot on. We had the ribs, chicken skewers & chicken wings to start - all were excellent but the wings were another level, I'd go as far to say the best I'd ever had. For mains two of us has Ostrich steaks & one of us the Durban curry - again all really tasty & perfectly cooked. Our waiter recommended a red wine that I wish I'd made a note of as it complimented the steaks perfectly. Desserts were great also. All in all it was a perfect evening - the atmosphere was buzzy without being too loud, the staff were friendly & attentive. You can tell that all the staff take great pride in their restaurant & it shows in their demeanour. I was concerned that nights out wouldn't be the same with the new guidelines restaurants have to adhere to - Zim have done a fantastic job in adhering to the guidelines without detracting from the dining experience. Had a meal at 5:30 on a Saturday . Staff excellent and friendly . Went for tagine for my main and prawns for starter. Prawns were £15 for a double portion about 12 prawns served shell on , absolutely bland as they had not been marinated. Had to put salt on them just to get some flavour, shame as the sauce served with them was quite nice. The tagine came in a small pot and looked like soup, tasted very chilli hot but had no flavour at all. The rice was freshly microwaved, nice and I was also given a small pot of raw chopped onions.Sent the main back and didn’t want a replacement as the food was so poor got my money back for the main.To be honest if you know nothing about good world food, your be ok here but if you have taste buds and a little bit of knowledge about authentic cooking then you will be very disappointed.Will not be returning.

We went to Zim Braai with some high expectations, my wife who is South African was particularly excited.Ordered ribs and chicken skewers for starters, ribs were good, however the chicken skewers weren’t just overcooked they were cremated (couldn’t even say they were caramelised, usual chefs response, trust me l know).For mains my wife ordered the Boerewors with pap and chakalaka which she enjoyed, though the chakalaka was to spicy for her taste.I ordered the Zimbabwean Dovi. Which should have been a chicken curry with peanuts, peppers and spinach. I got a chicken curry with aubergines and kale, l understand as a chef that sometimes you run out of or can’t get certain ingredients, but if you do would it not be prudent to either pull the dish from the menu or inform the customer of the changes to the advertised dish.Apart from that the staff were friendly and welcoming.

We were greeted warmly and showed to a great little booth. The food came out quickly and was of a very high quality. Watch out for the Camembert starter - delicious but I had no room left for mains!

Went on a Sunday evening and had an amazing time , wonderful friendly staff, live music by Nate which was brilliant really added to the atmosphere. Nice and chilled with great different food to trt. Can't wait to go again

Our friends had booked and we weren't sure what to expect, but we were thrilled when the food arrived and it was truly delicious. When our dishes arrived they all looked mouth watering, spiced and cooked to perfection with quality ingredient's. I can't praise Zim enough - can't wait to go back and sample more dishes"

I have visited twice and had the weekday lunchtime deal for the South African Boerwors which is really yummy and such good value for money. There is a good atmosphere in the restaurant and the staff are lovely.

This was a speculative meal and followed looking for somewhere in Poole. We didnt find anything and so started driving towards Bournemouth and stopped in a small parade of shops. There was Zim Braai. It was terrific. Good food, excellent service and a very nice ambience in a setting that is unique and different. Very pleased we found it, have recommended it to others in the area and will - undoubtedly - go there again.

A great addition to the, already, excellent ambiance are the Sunday Sessions. The roast dinners are varied and as tasty as the main menu. The Harissa Chicken is sublime! The service every visit has been amazing. A great team!

After recently relocating from the northwest to Poole we knew nothing about Zim Braai. What an amazing restaurant. Food was outstanding we had never tasted anything like it. The service was just as impressive with a great atmosphere. This is where we will be taking all our visitors to impress them when they come to visit us.

Whatever the reason for visiting Zim whether it’s for a cocktail and nibbles or a celebration dinner or anything in between this fabulous restaurant has it covered!The moment you walk through the door you are warmly welcomed and sense the great atmosphere and enjoy the tasteful upmarket surroundings. The choice of cocktails is brilliant and if in doubt just ask for advice on what to have!The menu covers all tastes and dietary requirements, a couple of my starter favourites are the prawns and the chicken skewers. The main courses are so tasty, last time my friend had salmon & prawn curry and I had the oxtail again as it’s to die for!! We didn’t have room for dessert this time but enjoyed the most delicious Bailey’s style drink but even nicer!The staff are so kind and helpful, if you’re not sure what you want to eat they are brilliant at advising you and giving their recommendations, I’ve never been disappointed! The same with wine pairing.I can not recommend Zim enough, they’ve got it so right, what a gem. Thank you for yet another truly wonderful time with you last night, see you soon for the lamb tagine!

Amazing food and an amazing venue. It really is quite unique and that's a good thing. The restaurant food theme is exiting and the decor and service compliment it and give a truly great dining experience. Highly recommended. So good that I tried lunch too. Very good value.

Have had the pleasure on a few occasions of having great value and yummy 2 for 1 lunchtime burgers. Since then also tried the babotie and sadza balls. Oh my. Double yum. And the African ambience is wonderful. My go to place for great food.

A good vibe here, friendly staff, lively and an interesting menu. We like the long bar tables and that there is usually space at short notice, if we haven’t reserved in time !

I have been keen to visit after hearing great things. Since losing my mum I have missed the taste of home (no one cooks like your mum right?? ) We enjoyed all of the dishes and especially the sardines and the curry.However one of our party had food allergies and felt this was challenging to get a dish suitable. We were also unable to read a allergens menu. She opted to play safe and has a plain grilled salmon steak. Shame the Don Pedro's are so small... anyone been to south Africa will know that these are served twice the size! A little expensive so would save this restaurant to only special occasions

The food was great and the ambience lovely. Special commendation for the staff, who were attentive and fabulously enthusiastic about the food. Our waitress explained everything on the menu and held us with recommendations. Would definitely go back.

We booked late for a Christmas get together for a group of 18 friends. We were given lots of advice and help from the team at Zim Braai and booked and evening to remember. We chose to have seating in the bar area and for the number of people it was ideal allowing us to circulate during the evening while being seated for the meal. The set meal African Experience was fantastic and all our dietary requirements were catered for. Everyone said they had a great time at ZB.

Zim is our family favourite now! Andy and the team never fair to impress. The service is top notch and food outstanding. Its a real change to everything else out there. Great wine selection too!

Having never tried south African food before I thought this would be an interesting experience. Wow, what can I say. Fantastic different food and brilliant staff made the visit really enjoyable. I could eat the slow cooked ribs every day and the Durban curry was to die for. Thank you Zim Braai for introducing me to another countrys flavour.

I have visited Zim twice and been thoroughly pleased both times. I first came shortly after it opened, and was instantly wowed by the unique decor and ambiance. I attended with a close friend, who is actually from South Africa, it was amazing to see her reaction, as she photographed parts of the menu to send to her mother. I had the Potjie for my main as I wanted something not like you would get in an other restaurant. The staff were all very knowledgeable, which is great for people who aren’t aware of the different Africans food. The cocktails were great too!I have since re visited for a lunch sitting with friends who are from out of town, and been totally thrilled with the experience once again. 100% recommend.

First class lunch with a selection of light dishes that I hadn't come across before, but whch were all very tasty. Thank you to all concerned.

We were a table of four booked for a busy Saturday night.We were met by a couple of enthusiastic front of house staff and seated immediately.I noted that the atmosphere was quite vibrant and uplifting. We were immediately supplied with water and given the menus to peruse.The menus were clearly written although the choice, whilst varied, was not massively comprehensive. That said, the choices I personally made were just awesome.The flavours were so fresh and the meals were hot and to top it all the service was exceptional.The food was exciting and it was clearly prepared and served with a real passion.A great restaurant, great food and great service.This place "ticks all the boxes"

Went here for 3 birthday celebrations and it was brilliant from start till finish. A few of us went for the sharing platter and the portions were great! The starters were definitely a big hit and the main was good too. Lots of flavours there paired with great drinks. The service is outstanding too. All the staff really know their food and drink and were so very Accomodation. Thank you Zim Braai for a great evening. The birthday boys were satisfied ! Because the starters were better than the main I rate it 4/5.

Service was friendly and professional.Food good – particularly my steak – very rare (blue) as requestedDinner for two was almost £100 with one cocktail and one soft drink – no wine. At these prices the place itself should be of a much higher standard. The furniture looks as though it's been inherited from the previous owner, table is too small to accommodate the platters they use for food and the general ambience is too shabby

Went once on an off chance and now I am there probably twice a month. Love the place. Great food, great staff, great vibe. What's not to love.

We had a great experience at Zim. The food was superb, the staff was very attentive and the place has a great ambiance. We look forward to go back there soon. Highly recommended.

We have been to Zim Braai on a number of occasions &, have always had a great experience. A recent Family Meal to celebrate our Children being Home was again, a real pleasure.Lovely ambiance, great service from all staff especially Charli & importantly the Food as always, was really tasteful, superb flavours & a fantastic selection of dishes. Varied wine selection to suit everyone.We are lucky in the area, to have such a unique Restaurant with it's Southern African dining experience. Highly recommended.

What an amazing find. Based in Parkstone in Poole it is split between a bar area and formal dining area.The main courses are all made on the premises. Fresh and tasty, if you’re from Southern Africa, it’ll make you homesick. If you’re not, it’ll give you an amazing taste sensation.Portion sizes are generous and really good value for money. Desserts are bought in so are a little expensive but still delicious.Checkout their website. See what you’re missing. You need to visit. Make it a New Year’s resolution.

We visited for my birthday lunch, just before Christmas. Admittedly I was a bit sceptical, but I was genuinely blown away. The decor is so beautiful and tastefully done. The Wine selection (although I only had a glass of the Oumaat) was superb. The menu is next level, with so much variety and something to please all ex-pats, new-pats, and old-pats. I had a sharing platter and wasn't let down, definitely recommend this if you want an intro ino their 'stye'. The sides were so good, and each had their own spin on a Southern African classic. Sister-in-law had the bobotjie which was done just right. Lastly, the server, I forgot her name... Was the best, so friendly and full of recommendations, even nailed the pronounciation! Could not recommend this place highly enough. I'll be back to work my way through the menu for sure!
