Ypres Tavern in Swale

Visited this hidden gem on my daughters hen night out. Lovely cocktail bar with friendly owners and staff. Excellent cocktails and they even tailor made a cocktail for one of our group! There was a disco on playing dance music inside the bar. There is also a secluded garden area with seating which was really welcoming after a very hot day. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. Would highly recommend this place and will definitely be going again.

We stayed for a night in Sittingbourne as we lived here previously so were reminiscing. Walked past this place after having eaten nearby, but heard the live band so decided to have a quick drink. It was a fantastic night! Ended up staying all night as the atmosphere was amazing. We thought the drinks were very reasonably priced, the live band was excellent and the staff were probably the friendliest we have met in a long time, we felt really welcome. Would highly recommend an evening here!

Recently had a night out in town and discovered the newly refurbished Ypres bar. It is definitely worth a visit! Staff were friendly, atmosphere was great and a good night was had by all! Highly recommend for any occasion.

Love it in here for cocktails and shisha. They recently opened the front of the building which has comfy seating area and nice design to it. The staff are lovely. Cocktails are around £9 each made by hand and very tasty.

Good bar, friendly staff, music played in the evening and nicely decorated with comfortable modern seats. Separate bar out the back for a dance room with music and a wide screen TV with some outdoor seating.

My son discovered this pub a week ago and enjoyed the Sunday lunch so much that we went again as a family this Sunday. The host was welcoming and helpful. The place has been recently refurbished and has a comfortable dining area. There was a choice of four meats. We sampled three of them between us and they were all equally good. There were five fresh vegetables as well as crispy roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding. Everything was freshly cooked and piping hot. My six year old granddaughter had a child's dinner but it was a good plateful which she thoroughly enjoyed. I recommend this place for a good Sunday dinner. Good food at a very reasonable price.

I can only suppose that they suffer from the competition posed by the large Spoons across the road. On the night we visited, the tumbleweeds were blowing through the bar and the two locals sat at the bar had clearly been doing their best to keep the pub profitable . Beer is well kept and the barman was friendly but by the time we came out of the Spoons (traitors that we were) about 9.30 , this place appeared closed. No doubt much livelier when the music is in full swing you fear for their future given there are a further two pubs a few yards away

Polite and friendly staff. Great crowd. Live music. Small and cosy. Close to the train station.

Bien, la cerveza que quería no estaba en otra cerveza pero bueno, cubrió la brecha bien. Gran conversación y animado con la gente de bien, es un pub gente después de todo. No dejes que te desanimen, todo el mundo es bienvenido.

Excellent home cooked food at lunch times. Live music, quizzes & karaoke. Also a function room that we have used on numerous occasions - separate Bar if needed. What more could we want?

Quality food. Staff polite. Bit slow but kept topped up with drinks. No issues with food and service. Quiet day in general but pleasant.

Continues to be my local, continually changing guest ale. Always a surprise to see what's coming on next and now with the Cask Marque accreditation, you know it's gonna be good. You need a good ale to watch the excellent bands at weekends too. Make sure you have a real, freshly home cooked lunch when you're in there Mondays to Saturdays to soak up the ale. I've put it under the category of cheap eats but don't let that put you off, more like a real bargain I'd say. Don't worry lager drinkers, you're well catered for ok, at least four to choose from.

We joined friends here for lunch. Good varied home cooking menu. The food is ordered at the bar. We received very good service throughout our visit. Try the Gypsy tart ! The food was well cooked and all of our plates were cleared. Good full bar with proper beer on the pump. We shall return.

Went for a drink down sittingbourne high street while shopping. Went past a couple of pubs including wetherspoons heard a band playing and popped into the Ypres tavern. Best move I could have made great live music great bar staff really enjoyed the evening. Will definitely go back again

Attended Jam Night tonight. Absolutely brilliant. Musical talent in abundance. Great beer. Fab atmostphere. Landlord top notch especially when dealing with an extremely rude and disrespectful drunk old female trollop!

The Ypres continues to dish up good home made and home cooked food. Had a rather delish steak in Guinness pudding recently. Rather moreish.

Average food sadly. We had to wait a while to get served by a grumpy man. Decor could be improved .There is a yard at the rear for smokers. The place used to be better, lovely flowers on the roof and the inside was cared for. It does not help with the Golden Hope over the road taking a lot of custom.

My local, always good for a laugh with both the bar staff and other customers. Actually, customers is too formal a word, more like they're all my friends as you can chat to any of them to put the world to rights. Don't forget the great value food as well, very tasty, all fresh, properly home made and cooked and on the odd occasion that I have chips, the best in town.

Been here a few times both for food and on nights out. Food is average, very overrated on here. Much better places to eat in town. As for nights out, the staff are ok, but landlords seem very grumpy and don't seem very welcoming, which is a surprise considering a pub should be a fun place to go. Overall much Better places in town and we probably won't go there again

The meal was nice and hot with large servings of good home cooked food. The staff were very obliging. An enjoyable evening.

I have visited the Ypres for both band nights and for lunch: an excellent experience had with either of these! Variety of bands played regularly, Food is amazing: homemade and big portions for such little money... SUPERB! Friendly staff and brilliant atmosphere, what more could you want!! Definitely recommend for a place to visit if that be as a couple, with friends or as a family for lunch!

We visited this pub for lunch on a Friday. we were welcomed and offered a choice of tables. The lunch menu was very reasonably priced and the food was served promptly. We were advised that there might be a delay due to a large private function, but we did not wait any longer than I might have expected anyway.The pies are homemade and excellent, the portions were good and the food was hot. A very enjoyable lunchtime experience.

A fantastic Sittingbourne traditional town centre pub which has a stunning array of live music every weekend. Definitely worth the visit if you are in town.

We hired the function hall for a tribute gig on a Saturday night for a very reasonable price. The manager was very helpful and friendly as were the bar staff. This pub is definitely recommended and I wish them all the best for the future as a big Wetherspoons has recently opened opposite. Keep Sittingbourne's traditional pubs open!

I regularly visit this pub both as a dinner and for the bands at the weekend. The food served is delicious, homecooked and good portions; couple that with 2 meals for £10 and what more could you ask for.Friendly staff greet you and nothing seems to be too much trouble! I'm looking forward to my next visit already!

After spending 4 months working in kent i found a great local public house that does the best pint of Guinness in the uk, and a friendly helpfull and kind landlord and land lady Darren & Debbie ,there staff are also very helpfull and curtious .If you are looking for a proper old english establishment with kind friendly staff please go to Ypres Tavern you will not be dissappointd , Paul Kennedy senior engineer

Tried this place after reading all the reviews on here. We really was disappointed! I am sorry to say the food at best was average, a bit to cold, a bit to hard, didn't finish our food. Wasn't asked if it was ok either. Bar staff were distant not rude but not friendly or welcoming. Some of the other customers propping up the bar were really loud, swearing and OTT which just made us feel awkward while eating. Very overrated! Nicer places to eat in Sittingbourne high street!

Me and my partner went into the Ypres and we had to wait over an hour for our food and then it was cold when we received the food. As soon as you walk in the door, there is a typical smell of stale smoke and drink. Definetly wouldn't reccomend going in here as there are always children running about. The only good thing about it is that you won't want to stay in there for long.

Excellent service and food. Not served in 5 minutes because its all cooked fresh, so tastes like real food! Good place to go and good value too

The Ypres is definitely the best pub in town. Customers are always made to feel very welcome regardless of how often they visit. There's always a smiling face behind the bar.No decent pubs where we live so we often pop into the Ypres if we're in Sittngbourne

For two days on the trot now I've had lunch here. Given the price, the quality and the friendliness, you can't beat it. One problem though, I don't wanna leave!

Told my mate about how good it was and I had to prove it to him. We both had steak & kidney pies, mash and veg and took no time at all to demolish it. Excellent. And to crown it all, they opened the kitchen 30 mins after it had closed. You cannot ask for more than that. Brilliant hosting - well done to the guys that run it!

The service is very good as the staff are very helpful. The food is of good quality and value and the menus hold a decent range of choice. The atmosphere at lunchtime was quiet but not at graveyard levels. I like the range of seating possibilities, there being open tables at the from of the building with more secluded seating areas towards the rear. I was less keen on the necessity to order food at the bar and pay for it there before receiving the food which was served at the table.

Had lunch here a few times over the past three months, so tried almost all that is on the lunch time menu, most is homemade and all the food is of a very good quality, staff polite and friendly, surroundings nice and clean. Very reasonable priced too. Can't fault it at all, have recommended it to friends who have informed that they were also very happy with the good food and service. Highly recommended,

If you like a good pint in a real pub then this is the place for you. At the end of the High Street it's the ideal place to pop in mid shop. The pub does standard fare food like sausage egg and chips, that said it is a very good price and done very well. The locals are chatty and don't make you feel like you are a stranger, which is always nice.If you are in Sittingbourne and fancy a pint at a good price, kept well then pop in.

This pub restaurant continues to serve up largely home made dishes at an exceptional price. Always piping hot and pretty decent portions. If you haven't been yet, you're missing out on a gem. You'll be warmly welcomed by whoever is serving on that day too.

the hosts, Debbie and Darren could not do enough for us to make my 50th birthday party a success. Very helpful, very reasonable costs and a lovely buffet. Whether you are here for a quick drink, a fresh cooked meal or a full on celebration you will be made welcome and not charged through the nose for the pleasure. I cannot recommend this place and it s hosts enough.

A lovely pub and a traditional old pub. I went to watch the football but thery had a problem with the sound but used their initiative and play the 5 live commentary alongside the picture.Nice pub but a little dated, great position and worth a visit.

Met my family over from Maidstone. Lunchtime came and no idea where to go. Checked on internet for somewhere local and this place sounded ok. Well OK didnt cut it. It was like an oasis in the desert. Real fresh food, well cooked and very tasty. Im a pudding person but after a starter and a main there was no room for anything else. Not only was the food and staff exellent but the value was exceptional also.

Having had a really stressful week last month I decided that my husband, daughter and mum needed some relaxed time out together. We searched the internet for somewhere that did homemade food. Result = The Ypres tavern. The friendly staff welcomed us through the door and the aromas were amazing. We chose four different starters and four different mains. Let me say the food was delicious. It was fresh, hot and there was plenty of it. The best home produced food I've eaten in a long time [ other than mine of course ] Having had a taste of each others food, I had the pie, we decided that we must come back soon to try the other delights. Well today is going to be that day. I'll let you know later how it goes. :-)

My husband and I have visited the Ypres Tavern twice now. We had a lovely lunch there mid week. The food was a lovely home cooked meal. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating and could not do enough to help and offered good service.We also visiting the Ypres Tavern on Saturday 14th February 2015 to have a few drinks with friends for my husband's birthday. There were around 20 of us. We had some lunch. Again the service was good. Nothing was too much trouble. It was nice home cooked food and very tasty. We were having such a good time that we decided to stay until the evening. There was a brilliant atmosphere and it appeared the rest of the customers were having a good time as they were dancing and having a good time. The staff were so friendly and welcoming.When you go to the Ypres Tavern you are always met with a smile and they go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. I believe the place has had a bit of a face lift. I have been pleasantly surprised as this was not a pub I frequented but I will certainly be returning for lunch or a social drink.

I have eaten at The Ypres several times since they started doing food. My husband, and friends have also enjoyed dining there.The food has been Very tasty, hot, and portion size was good. We are always made to feel very welcome, and nothing is too much trouble. Staff are friendly and helpful. I like the fact that the chef comes out to speak with the diners and asks if everything was okay - he's always open to suggestions.It's nice to dine somewhere that has a menu of home-made foods, not pre-packaged.Well done, The Ypres Tavern.We'll be back!

My wife and I visit the ypres for lunch on a regular basis. We enjoy the freshly prepared food they have to offer and the friendly service provided by Debbie & Darren and the rest of the staff who are always polite, helpful and make us both feel welcome and wanting to visit again. Bill b.

You get a decent good value meal in here as the chef knows his stuff. It is mostly literally home prepared and properly cooked. I'll bet if he could, Tony would catch his own fish to serve in there. I've had lunch in there now several times and it's rather yummy.There's always someone to have a natter to and I know several friends who pop in.Debbie and Darren are lovely mine hosts, their bar staff always greet you genuinely and I'd recommend here anytime. I visited the Ypres on Saturday lunch time with some family members for lunch, this was a last minute change to our planned venue and so pleased we came here! Excellent service, nice friendly pub and amazing food. Hot fresh home cooked and good value. Would happily travel from Gravesend to the Ypres to meet my family for lunch again! Spot on.

Debbie and Darren are warm and friendly landlords where nothing is too much trouble, we booked our wedding reception in the function room as they took over the place. We were their first function party as landlords...... Amazing is to smaller word for the staff and landlords the reception was perfect and everything was as we dreamt it would be. The restaurant a recent addition was always on the cards, the chef is excellent, everything home cooked, piping hot and exactly what you order, I had the home made chicken pie and my husband the chilli con carne, best pie I've eaten (that includes my NANs and that's saying something) and the chilli, well he can't stop raving about it. Word has spread and the place is now known not only for the perfect couple and staff but also the amazing service from staff and food excellence, well done the Ypres xxx

Had a family function here today in the function room. Staff were friendly, room was a decent size and the right temperature! Drinks prices were very reasonable and the buffet was good. No complaints, will probably book the room in future.

We have recently held our son's baptism party in the Ypres hall and I felt compelled to write a review to say thank you! Debbie and her team could not have done more or been more helpful. The hall was immaculately clean and the buffet and bar service were brilliant. The hall comfortably held 40 people with loads of room for the children to play as well. We will definitely book again for any future family events.Thank you for being part of our day.

On new years eve my family and I went to this pub for lunch. The Ypres Tavern is clean and the staff are friendly, polite and accommodating. We all ordered a main meal and desert. The food is not any pub food it is high class restaurant food. The pie was amazing and the veg was cooked to perfection and the gypsy tart was delicious. Not only was the food cheap but it was all homemade. Will definitely be going back very soon.

My friend and I were going out for a pre-Christmas lunch and decided to try the Ypres as they had just started doing lunches - we were not disappointed! Almost all the menu is homemade and was delicious! The portion sizes are good, there was no room left for dessert. Excellent value for money; we are already planning our next visit.

Great pub, great food, friendly staff! I've lived in Sittingbourne for many years and had previously been in this pub twice and didn't like it... Then whilst chatting to a friend recently, she recommended it to me, telling me it has changed with the new owners and is now a lovely place serving great home cooked food at cheap prices.. So I'd thought I'd give it another try! ...Well I wasn't disappointed, I took my daughter along for lunch, we were greeted my happy, welcoming bar staff, sat at a clean table which was neatly presented with cutlery and mats and was served the best pub meal I've had in a long time! The desert also was delicious.. And we've been back twice in the last month! definitely would recommend.... This pub has changed a great deal... Thanks to the new owners

I have enjoyed several lunches in the Ypres and took friends today for their first visit. They were very impressed. The chilli in particular was complimented but all the food was of its usual high standard. The pub itself is welcoming, service is friendly and you don't feel rushed so a great place to leisurely catch up with friends. Highly recommended.

The Ypres Tavern public house has recently started doing a lunchtime menu Monday to Saturday. Been three times now for lunch and, with a menu consisting mainly of homemade courses (the lemon cheesecake is fantastic), the food is of excellent quality and good value. It is nice to have a proper steak pie with short crust pastry served up on the plate rather than one that is in a separate bowl. The menu and cooking is by someone who used to have their own popular pub/restaurant near Sittingbourne. Snacks such as beef burgers and chips are available for those who prefer something lighter.
