Decided to try the abbey hotel as it was part of the eat out scheme, staff was absolutely amazing especially ajay and accommodating our family of 10 was no problem. Very spacious and very easy to maintain social distancing. Will definitely be returning in the future.

Went to the Abbey a couple of weeks ago for a family meal. Meal was ok. Didn't appreciate being asked to leave the dinning room at 9 o'clock to have coffee and mince pies in the lounge bar,, yes they did take chairs in for us also moved tables. Noticed other dinners after us had to do the same so we were like sardines in a can, listening to music when we would have preferred to sit as a family in the dinning room. It was not the case that they had other diners that required the tables we would have understood if that had been the reason. Just seemed they wanted to get the room ready for the following day.

Myself and my other family members were really excited to be spending Christmas Day at the Abbey Hotel but were left feeling quite disappointed. Although there were quite nice parts of our meal/experience I feel as though the Abbey had let us down. We were warmly welcomed with a glass of champagne on entrance. We waited in the bar area with our drink then was shown our table after a short while. The tables were decorated with crackers and Christmas hats which was a nice touch. I did feel that our group of 11 was squeezed onto our table. I felt quite uncomfortable throughout the course of the meal, especially whilst trying to eat. They soon brought out the starters, I had French onion soup which was delicious. Our second course was sorbet which was half melted as they brought them out! For mains the majority of our party had traditional Christmas turkey or beef roast. This was really disappointing! They brought out a plate to myself with the beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. I had 3 roast potatoes and 1 tiny new potatoes! The roast potatoes were seriously over done, I could not eat the outside of these they were so hard, so I scooped out the potato from inside the shell! I'm not really sure why I had a tiny new potato on my plate?! The waitresses then came out with the vegetables, which they served to us. They only served us carrots and Brussels! I was quite shocked that these were the only vegetables on offer, considering a few of our party do not even eat Brussels so they were left with just carrots!? Where was the peas, the seasonal parsnips etc?! The gravy was already on the plate which I personally would have preferred self service on the table. To top it off when one member of our party asked for more veg the waitress was quite rude and gave attitude. To be honest most of the waitresses were struggling to crack a smile on their faces throughout the whole of the meal. I know it was Christmas Day and I understand it probably is the last thing they want to be doing is to be working but they did come across as rude at times. We also had to ask 3 times for our table to be cleared of rubbish as they continued serve us with rubbish from the crackers etc, there was barely a space to put our drinks down. We then had our dessert and that was lovely. We was also offered a drink on the house which was a nice touch. After our meal we were offered tea and coffee in the bar area where a musician sang and played the guitar which was nice. I have rated the Abbey as a 2 star as I feel the main meal was a complete let down. Considering we all paid £65, I do feel we were all pretty ripped off! I had a roast for £6.99 all you can eat at a carvery and it was miles better than what I had that day! The atmosphere was nice and the other courses were good but I have had better Christmas Day dinners and for a lot less money as well! We really did not get the standard we had paid for and for this reason we will not be booking again.

Paid £20 per head for buffet and entertainment on New Year's Eve. Wasn't expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised. They had gone to a great deal of effort in decorating the place with lights balloons etc. the buffet was very good for the money - a good quality English buffet, and also an Indian buffet, so something for everyone. The entertainer was very good, again something for all tastes - the age range was fairly balance (maybe a few more oldies than younger people), so he did well to please everyone. All in all a good night, and very good value for money.

Have been here so many times, and never had a bad meal. Great for girl's nights out, £10 for a two course meal Friday evenings. Brilliant carvery Sunday lunch, only down side is the decor. There have been some small changes made lately, but a thorough makeover would not come amiss. However, good food and friendly helpful staff are more important in the general scheme of things. Give it a try, you'll enjoy the laid back atmosphere.

Had a large party for dinner for a special occasion and everyone of us said how impressed we were with the Abbey. Very very good value for money, good selection of food to suit everyone's requirements and plenty of food, no scrimping on portion size. Staff friendly and flexible when more people turned up than was expected. This was the only place that took a large group booking and didn't request we pre-ordered ahead which saved me a big job. Plenty of parking, restaurant was packed but we were all still given the same high standard service. A special thanks to Jo and all the staff.

Fantastically presented, tasty food. The Indian cusine was fab. Will certainly go again. Poor review on trip advisor looks like the diner ate the "english menu" which I've not tried. The bar and staff are also very friendly and accomodating.

Had the most unedible meal here yesterday Thursday 7th November2012. Liver so hard couldnt be cut, browned hard potoes, the cabbage and swede/carrot mash were the only eaten food on the plate. The large dining room was virtually empty, six occupied tables. The ordered medium white wine, arrived, but was not medium, waitress said she was sorry, but the person behind the bar said it was what we ordered, never in my fifty years have I ordered sweet wine. No apology, was offered, just the returned same wine!!!!!! We left before dessert, two very unhappy customers. Walked along the Leas, came across another pub restaurant, which was very busy, where we had two glasses of medium white wine on the house, after telling our story. We had dessert and coffee there, pity we didnt find this restaurant first, will certainly come back here .
