Chilled out pub with a great beer garden, dates back to the 17th Century. We visited on a Sunday evening so there was only one cask ales on (they shut Monday - Weds), but there is a good choice of other drinks. Dog friendly.

The best pub in Rye, possibly in the country. Jeff has worked out how to deliver the best drinks and the most welcoming atmosphere. And to be crystal clear, the "bar lady with the red hair" (and the rest of the team) is an integral part of why this place is great. Come, don't order some ludicrous cocktail, bring a card, and enjoy everything about this amazing place.

Absolutely awful I’ve never been anywhere so impolite, the behaviour was rude and abrupt actually I would say disgusting ,we were served by someone who obviously didn’t want to be working and she definitely didn’t like women, she made us very uncomfortable , even when it came to passing the drinks she spilt them because it seemed to much just to pass them over nicely . Manners cost nothing.

Came here about ten years ago and once again starting off the day here. Liza kicks off with a Langudoc rosé. I had a Kent brewery 4.1% Golding. Lovely pint. Two real ales and a cider on handpump. A beautiful pub in a great setting. Friendly staff. Large walled beer garden with views over the wetlands to the sea. Looks like decking also being built. Only bar snacks and pork pies: not a food destination.

Best pub in the UK: if you like amazing beers and ciders from local breweries that change regularly, friendly service, good wine, AF options a pared back old school cosy vibe with lovely fire. And big garden for summer. And you're happy with bar snacks and a cheese board. They don't serve food, so don't go here looking for a roast then post a two star review. It's weird, they're very clear about their offering!

This is undoubtedly the best pub in Rye, the staff are very friendly and it serves a wide variety of local ales, ciders and pork pies. I have been coming here fairly often for the last couple of years and I am always amazed when I walk in by the warm welcome and the fact that Zoe and Jeff make a real effort of saying hello and asking me how I am. I have had great times here with friends and family but equally - it's the sort of pub that you can go to on your own with a book.

Great little place for people that like pubs the breweries haven't commercialised. Great beers and ciders that are different from the usual everywhere and a great stout (called Blacks) that's a lovely change from Guinness. They do good cheese plates and pork pies. Open log fire with very friendly staff. The owner is there in the bar most of the time chatting to everybody everywhere. He loves his 'work' and creates a very welcoming, open atmosphere. Nothing is fancy, but it's all very authentic and honest. If you're in Rye and looking for a pleasant distraction for a couple of hours, seek it out. You''ll probably be pleased you did.

We visited for a pint on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2024. The pub itself is beautifully clean with a great selection of beer and other alcoholic beverages and an open fire which was roaring away. The staff were really friendly and warmly welcoming. We had such a nice time on Christmas Eve, we went back on Christmas Day. The atmosphere on both occasions was buzzy but not so noisy that you can’t have a proper chat. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Rye. Excellent.

Extremely disappointing experience. The staff and owner displayed shockingly rude behavior, showing no understanding of the basic principles of hospitality. Rather than treating customers with respect, they resorted to insults, bullying, and jeering, driving us out of the pub in full view of other patrons. Such behavior is unacceptable, and I would strongly advise others to avoid this establishment. The team and management should reflect on their actions and consider how unprofessional and cowardly their conduct was. We certainly did not deserve to be treated so poorly, especially in such a public manner.

It could be the time of day or the time of year we visited, just after midday the place was empty except for one other couple, we asked if we could order some food to be told they don't do hot food, only food was a pork pie or a cheese plate. The pie was home made and savoury, quite nice but not worth the price of £5.60, the plate of cheese plate again was presentable with a small handful of small crackers and 3 finger size pieces of cheese and a small pot of chutney. Nowhere near the value of the £10.50 they charged. When we ordered drinks they didn't have any Malibu so we had to have vodka, they had a very limited no alcohol drinks, Pale Ale, Lager and one other. When I compare this visit to one I made a few years ago the difference is breathtaking, the place was heaving with customers, hot food from a comprehensive menu. Very disappointing I won't be going back there again.

Sadly a bitter experience at a pub i have been to on a number of occasions. The beer and service was top notch. I took my family for some needed refreshment. After half an hour outside a gentleman collecting glasses told us that the children shouldn’t run around the garden as it wasn’t a playground. I understand this and would have appreciated a quiet word in myself or my partner’s ear (said children were all sat by then 🤦🏻♂️).But to be reprimanded in a demeaning and patronising manner was terrible. I approached the man to express my displeasure at which myself and my family were spoken to and was rudely told this is my pub and if you do t like it your not welcome again 😧 I could go on but there’s not enough room.. Sadly won’t be going to the Ypres again… no loss the waterworks is 1000 times better x

Nice old pub. I would imagine mainly used by tourists. Clean inside with several places to sit. Drink prices not too unreasonable. Large beer garden which was closed on the day of our visit as it was waterlogged. This is not a restaurant so no hot food on offer however we did try one of their pork pies which was very tasty. If the gentle charm and quirk of Rye could be bottled, you’d find it at the Ypres Castle Inn. Balancing elegantly between old and new, it combines the best bits of ‘a traditional pub’ with a fresh, modern ‘boozer’. While the fire roars in the hearth you can sip a contemporary sour beer or pale ale, while choosing between a locally sourced pork pie or a tin of Perello olives for a snack in between. For the colder nights there’s nooks and crannies aplenty to pitch up in and enjoy a good book, while Summer sun is complemented with a spacious garden overlooking the marshes. Jeff, the master of house, is quick to spin a yarn, while making sure your glass is nice and full. We’ve come back for seconds, and so will you. Pro tip - head down the stairs from the church to land right on its doorstep. Our step count is high enough, thank you very much Google maps. 5/5 will recommend to many.

The place was awful. Ok if you just want a drinking den, I’m all for it. But the two staff, one young man and one young lady couldn’t have been more unfriendly or unhelpful had they been trying to. I guess they were both naturally this way. The guy was trying to hide a pint he was drinking from view from where we were sitting. Whether this from his colleague or another drinker I’ve no idea! The establishment reeked of dogs, more of whom were seated at chairs and benches than their human companions! No body wanted to move a mutt so as we could take a seat. Why we even stayed for one ? To be honest I needed the loo. Wish I’d have waited. Avoid. Spoils a lovely town with great history.

Situated below Ypres Castle & Gun Gardens is The Ypres Castle Pub. Known as Vipers to us locals. A old rustic pub with a wood fire and great selection of craft ales and beers both local and further a field., Sicilian wine on tap, Prosecco by the glass. The star of the show is ROTHAUS an absolute beautiful pint from Germany or try it in a litre size. Food is crisps or local cheese board or local meat board both reasonably priced and generous portions. The venue at the moment is only open Thursday to Sunday. A large beer garden with views over the Marsh. Dog friendly and friendly helpful staff. Well worth a visit. As I said before a old rustic pub with the wood fire going now. Really cozy, dog friendly as I mentioned before. The ROTHAUS is a permanent one on as well as Ypres Castle bitter. A new lovely pint is FLOC and Geoff the landlord is going to see about getting it as a permanent one on tap. Still only open Thursday to Sunday and bank Holidays. But well worth a visit. 20/7/23.Always liked this pub because itis very old-world. To me this is one of the reasons for coming to Rye. The view from the gardens is interesting, a destination point for me when visiting Rye. But what is happening to the gardens and view. Expressed my concerns to a nice young man, putting out the umbrellas, who said it is all down to the council who are no longer caring for the outer boundaries, that's sad, but, some attention could be given to the gardens themselves. Even a strimmer and a quick cut back around the walls would improve. Come on guys don't let me down

I don't want to give a bad review to a family owned restaurant. But there was so much wrong with this place that is easily fixed. The staff were more interested in chatting amongst themselves than serving and while we were there there were 2 tables full of dirty plates and cups that stayed that way the entire time while the staff enjoyed chatting. If I am eating in with sandwiches and a salad I don't really want to eat out of takeaway containers, the least that can be done is to put it on or give us plates. The food offering is mediocre at best and nothing of any substance that is hot. It is like no real thought has been put into what is being offered, for example soggy croutons with salad, basic would not be difficult to offer soups etc. Overall pretty poor TBH
