A good sized pub at the bottom of the iconic Mermaid Street, this is clearly a bit more modern than the 14th century buildings around the corner, it is nonetheless a pleasant enough building and was reasonably busy on our recent Friday evening visit. The menu offered a decent enough selection of pub grub dishes, and my fish & chips with mushy peas, pickled onion, curry sauce and triple-cooked chips was a pretty good dish, with a decent piece of well cooked fish and a crispy batter, although I thought both the curry sauce and a picked onion was a somewhat unusual addition. The pub itself is quite pleasant with old beams on the ceiling and flagstones on the floor, but some of the punters let it down a little, with a noisy and annoying bunch of Apprentice wanabees on the next table for example, but that’s obviously not the pub’s fault. The staff certainly seemed friendly enough and the meal was good.

Very poor visit on this occasion considering we come very regularly. Not sure what has happened to the old staff but all new faces and not friendly faces. Majority of staff spent our entire meal on their phones behind the bar chatting like they weren’t even at work so in the end we sat ourselves and then got asked if we wanted desserts but hadn’t even had a drink let alone desserts. Me and my wife normally deal with charlie or Shannon but neither were there so hopefully just a day off. Food - we waited 45 minutes for scallops which were cold and overcooked they just tasted like oil. I guess the chef was too busy smoking and joking outside the building (hopefully washed his hands after his cigarette) We then had fish pie which is normally delicious but was bland with hardly no fish just mash. We normally have dessert but considering the meal wasn’t that great we decided to give this a miss. We love the ship and the normal staff and that’s why we always return however I think we will be looking to see what else rye has too offer. Please do better! John.

Just been to our "local" for a quick bite and a beer. Disappointed with the menu, it's really not for us - we couldn't find anything on it we'd like. Went for a burger with added coleslaw. The coleslaw was red and tasted of Vinegar. The burger was . . . not the best. Beer was pretty disappointing too with not much choice and I ended up with a pretty average glass of "Long Man". Service by Jodie was awesome as usual, only wish she could have offered us better fare. Maybe if they get a better menu and some decent beer - we'll go back

The bed was really comfy but the shower could do with a bit more oomph. Overall the food was good. The full English and the fish and chips were the highlights. I recently stayed at The Ship Inn and found that the staff were very friendly and welcoming, the bedroom was clean and tidy, and very comfortable bed, had a Nespresso coffee machine but no kettle, the only downside to our room was that the sink in the bathroom was very small so difficult to wash and shave. Breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked, unfortunately no toast and orange juice which was disappointing. The location was perfect as close to town centre, however there is no pub parking so you need to park on a meter. This is a budget accommodation and is well worth staying at and would recommend staying for a weekend

So very disappointing. Hadn’t been here for several months and took a friend for lunch as it used to be pretty good. We ordered crab rolls in tempura which turned out to be king prawns in batter accompanied by bottled soy sauce. The bread (at£2.50) was a white sliced loaf from a local shop or bakery and the wine was overpriced. Whilst the service was efficient and friendly, the rip off London prices for below average bistro food were disappointing. 18 months ago this was one of my favourite dots that showed promise of becoming a regional contender. Now it’s an overpriced tourist trap with below average food. Very disappointing.

When asked for other options basically told there was none and that I'd now have a long wait as 11 other people just ordered. Special day out and lunch with my mum ruined. So for a newly visited (for us) venue we were really pleased. For me, my pint of beer was absolutely excellent, fresh and just the right temperature. We had come for Sunday Lunch and were not disappointed as the food was also excellent and arrived at the table only twenty minutes after we had arrived. The service was exemplary and we were made very welcome with constant attention to all our needs/wants. It may seem to some a little expensive but the quality is so good that today this represents value for money. Well worth making that booking but be prepared to park a little way away as this is a very popular area in Rye. Good things are worth waiting for though!

Our visit to The Ship Inn started off really well. We enjoyed the drinks on offer and the starters were lovely. We were informed straight away of the things missing on the menu. However, it all went a bit downhill from there. We ordered two roast beef dinners which took around 45 mins after starters to arrive to table. When they did arrive, the beef was tough and cold, potatoes burnt and veg was hard. I also ordered a side of cauliflower cheese which was not only burnt on top, but cold and dry to eat. When asked if everything was ok, he asked straight away about the beef as it seemed to be a common issue. I informed the waiter of the issues and unfortunately asked for him to send the meals back and for them to be taken off the bill. This seemed to be an issue for a number of tables as we could keep hearing complaints as we were waiting for our food. It is such a shame as the staff were so friendly and the interior of the pub was lovely.

I write this with a heavy heart as I have been a local at the Ship for about 6 years and it's been through some incarnations, turnover of staff, Covid, etcThough I still love the rank and file staff who are generally friendly and resourceful, it's recently really taken a downward turn. Last week I visited with my wife for a few Saturday night drinks before going for dinner. There was a group of 4 adults (slumped at the bar) and 5 children who were running around the bar, screaming and shouting and playing games in the toilets. Every now and again one of the parent would shout across the bar for them to stop and then return to their drinks.People were trying to eat through this racket and a number of tables moved to further extremities of the pub for some respite. As a local and regular customer, I thought i'd ask the duty manager why he was not doing anything about this. He first said he hadn't seen anything a miss which shows a huge lack of awareness as a manager. He then told me he "Won't discriminate against children" and that they were "relatives of a staff member". I pointed out that I don't have a problem with children it's the parents who are letting them run riot. I was shocked that he was letting this group do what they want as they were "relatives of a staff member". Anyway that was the final straw for me. Being dismissed like this as a regular customer who has literally ploughed thousands of pounds over the years into that pub was appalling. I'll gladly return and try the Ship again, when it has some serious management (Preferably a landlord or lady with a vested interest in the place). By the way it's closed right now on Mondays and Tuesdays meaning other pubs like the Standard are packed. Not a great strategy for success!

Having eaten at the Ship many times as well as attended my close friends wedding reception there, we had high expectations of Christmas lunch this year with my husband and children. We prebooked our food to order and confirmed that children were £40 per head. All good very helpful and extremely accommodating over the phone. Christmas Day was sadly a different story. All began well, drinks and starters arrived in a timely fashion and were delicious. We then waited 50 minutes before enquiring as to the whereabouts of our main Christmas roasts. When the main courses arrived, they were barely warm. By this time our children were starving and began eating despite food being cold. But it really was too much and explained the food was returned ‘to reheat.’ 4 smaller plates of roast materialised minus sausages etc which they since ran out of. It was all very disappointing and sullied the day for sure. Trying to maintain our festive spirit though as it was Christmas Day. Deserts arrived which were also barely warm. We didn’t draw attention to this as there seemed little point. My husband asked for the bill once we had finished and too my astonishment my children ages 10 and 12 had been charged £80 per head. This was rectified upon during attention to it and apparently the duty manager commented to my husband that our children ‘did eat a lot’.’ I enquired when booking in advance that particularly my eldest had a very good appetite , wanting to know if I needed to order an adult meal and I was told that she could always ask for a top up so to speak if she hadn’t eaten enough. I was reassured. My youngest has a small appetite and so this was relevant too. Upon leaving feeling wholly dissatisfied with the experience, I felt the need to politely express my views to the duty manager myself. I was measured and calm but explained that after already receiving cold food, I would expect some careful consideration when billed. Certainly not such a huge oversight as to charge double for our children’s meals. The duty manager was frankly very rude to me. He said, I quote “well, I rectified it didn’t I?” His manner was aggressive and there was certainly a complete lack of customer service and empathy did our family’s Christmas Day experience. Going out for dinner on Christmas Day should be a huge treat. I felt frankly very disappointed indeed. A couple of weeks later whilst undertaking an employment search, I noticed a vacancy being advertised for a new Duty Manager at The Ship in Rye. Needless to say I am not surprised. I would say on the only positive note that the young lady that dealt with our bookings over the phone , as well as greeting us on our arrival was extremely helpful, polite and accommodating.

Surprise birthday party with friends but very deflated at the quality of just about everything Cold steaks and tiny cod loin which we handed back for re heating and it still came out cold Asked for red wine and was given white .Puddings that needed a saw to get through .Never write a bad review but I'm afraid this was just really poor We are really big supporters of pubs and hospitality places particularly after all the troubles but this has compelled me to write a poor review .staff were very pleasant but the whole evening was embarrassing as we recommended the place to our friends .The bill was ridiculous for what we had so all in all most disappointing .

Rye locals are always on the hunt for somewhere that does a good Sunday lunch. So it was the turn to try The Ship Inn. The environment is pleasant, the staff incredibly nice. Happy to see this is a dog friendly restaurant, and plenty were around. I noticed dog owners were given a bowl of water and some dog biscuits which was a really nice gesture. But sadly the food was incredibly mediocre and quite flavourless, and some items that should have been part of the dish were missing from the plate. As I said, the staff are nice, yet they didn't notice the need to clear plates before serving the next course and forgot cutlery. The prices aren't high, though we'd happily more for food that's more satisfying. So to be honest, I think it was a waste of money and see no reason to go back. For certain The Globe on Military Road is far superior for Sunday lunch. But I'm sure The Ship Inn will do just fine in the future purely based on its convenient location for daytrippers and tourist. But not so sure it will keep a good local clientele during the quiet seasons.

The Ship Inn was our family favourite in Rye up until it changed hands a few years ago, then I'm afraid I had nothing nice to say! Booked for a group of friends staying in Rye for a long weekend as it was the only restaurant that could fit us in. I did warn everyone it mightn't be much good and explained how much we used to love it. So pleased to report that it's back to being favourite again! Absolutely fantastic menu bursting with delicious little plates and heaps of seafood and local food. Everything we had was excellent. Staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful! Wine list top notch, and a few cocktails were fantastic too. So very pleased, well done The Ship Inn, we will be back!

We spent the day in Rye as we’re staying locally in camber for a friends birthday. We came here for dinner at around 6.30pm without a booking as a group of 7 girls. The staff were so accommodating and moved a smaller group around to arrange a bigger table in the window which was lovely. Our waitress called Sharon was extremely friendly and funny and when we said we fancied a mulled wine she said it wasn’t on the menu but she would make it for us. The mulled wine was really great, it was freshly made and warm. Our food order was then quickly taken before other big tables were due to ensure we didn’t have a long wait. The food came quickly and was delicious. We had such a lovely evening and would like to thank all of the staff (Sharon especially) for such lovely service. If we venture this way again we will definitely return!Thank you

11th September Wedding - Booked months ago for our wedding reception. Communication was good to begin with, unfortunately this dwindled as time went on leaving me very anxious and having not much faith leading up to our wedding day. I understood covid meant staff and management were getting used to the swing of things however if they could not accommodate a wedding reception we should have been turned away originally. We were informed there was a change of management a month before the wedding meaning that there was even more strain on communication. I felt like I had to reiterate plans multiple times for the information to get through or any requests confirmed, which caused a lot of unnecessary stress Floor staff were absolutely lovely on the day however seemed very rushed off their feet and undertrained. I felt like I had to apologise to them and thank them for their help at every opportunity. Some guests were waiting a very long time for their starter and main due to short staffing. The food was overall good, burgers were very burnt but the fish dishes were lovely. Good portions and price. Many of our guests were staying in the hotel and seemingly enjoyed their stay. Big let down was that the bar in the function room was not staffed and ‘not functional’ meaning guests had to go downstairs for all drinks. This was quite annoying as we were not told about this before we booked. There were prior agreements to have music after the meal, in which there was multiple disputes with the manager as he couldn’t in his words ‘have his guests downstairs listening to spice girls’ even though most of the guests were ones attending my wedding and had a prior agreement to have my playlist playing in the function room. Music kept being turned off even though it was previously agreed to be on played. We compromised to turn off at 10 but the music was turned off multiple times before this. I ended up leaving early around 9ish due to feeling frustrated. Overall our experience was 3.5 / 5 (could not rate 3.5 on the stars) there are multiple things that are needing improvement, such as the way management communicate with their guests and run events in their function/dining room. Probably not a good place for a wedding reception due to short staffing, poor communication and attitude of management as I felt like a burden. However I cannot really fault most of the food and drink, and the guests we had thankfully made the day very special.

WORST EVER LUCH OUT!!! Such a disappointment ! :-( 10% service charged!! Disgraceful.Came for a lunch on our day out in Rye (that was going so welll until this). Ordered the fish finger sandwich that comes with triple fried chips and the beef steak bagel with triple fried chips. Both meals were£9.35 including the 10% service charge. When the meals turned up on a teeny plate that was a side plate size , NOT a dinner plate, we were quite disappointed. The food didn't look great, the very small amount of chips looked like they were past their best, MY BAGEL WAS INEDIBLE, rock solid and the beef didn't look edible (an odd shade of pink and very dried up). The fish finger sandwich actually looked delicious, however my husband said it was awful and cold and left half of it.Having told the waitress that the bagel was not edible, she apologised and said she would get the manager to come and talk to. Having waited 10 minutes he did come and speak to me, very brief and insincere and said he would take it off the bill. When paying , yes it was taken off the bill and the waitress said she'd take the 10% off too. We weren't aware there was service charge added. At this point I was so cross and it had totally ruined our day that I had to walk out leaving my husband embarrassed paying for the worst lunch/ food we have ever been served up. Maybe there needs to be a change in management. Looking at the recent reviews, maybe Sharon should be promoted to general manager and maybe will be able improve things to make The Ship Inn a great place to go again.

called in for a quick afternoon drink...had to tell the waitress 3 time what my order was (a glass of pinot and a coke) as she was a "bit tired". Charged £10 for a large glass of Pinot! My bad for not checking the wine list, but having had the same, plus a pint and a bag of crisps elsewhere earlier for £8.50 I was a bit taken aback.

We had passed it during the day and it appeared to be very busy. We arrived 20 minutes early for our 7.30 booking, tables outside/inside were covered with dirty glasses. We were ignored by staff who seemed to be running around like headless chickens and after 5 minutes we spoke to a waitress who proved as the evening went on to be very good. We saw only 2 waitresses and a barman. Eventually seated and ordered drinks which came after about 5 minutes. We ordered Jakes Fish and Chips and Mussels with chips. When they arrived the mussels and sauce were warm not hot. The fish was OK but could not categorically say it tasted like "Catch of the Day". The bar and restaurant was only 25% full and 3 staff could not manage. We mentioned to the other waitress, who appeared to us as though it could have been her first day, that the food was not hot enough and she said she would report to the chefs. She also brought us tomato sauce after 10 minutes when we had asked for vinegar. We did eat most of the meal and when our first waitress returned and asked how the meal was and we mentioned that we had reported our complaint already she apologised and later explained that her colleague had spoken to the chefs but had forgot to come and tell us. As a concession we were offered a free drink or dessert. I am afraid the intentional distressed look of The Ship actually was a step too far and needed updating. Will not be returning.
