We have just had the most wonderful experience and perfect day, thanks to the staff at The Ship Inn. When they say they are dog friendly, they are not kidding! As we enjoyed a pint after a few hours walking on beaches, the staff were tending to our dogs, with water and treats. Meanwhile, the roast pork was perfect, as were the fish and chips! The food, ambience and service was just right! Loved it! Thank you xxx

Easily located near the river, and the lower end of Rye. Quiet on arrival, so seated and attended to promptly. Efficient and good humoured waiter. Drinks served to order, and meal order taken. Fifteen minutes wait for food, but not an issue as expecting it to be prepared correctly. My wife's fish pie and rainbow chard was hot and very tasty, ( I had some). Pumpkin curry was not strongly flavoured, which suited me, as I like mild. Served at a ready to eat temperature. Rice was a bit too sticky, but held together as a cone shape. Nevertheless, soft to eat. No dessert for us though, as light lunch. As with most quality eateries in top tourist areas, the food is not cheap. But then I reflect too much on prices from the 1990s. Altogether a very good experience in a clean and rustic setting in a good location. We didn't use rooms.

We visited The Ship for a light lunch. The staff were great as was the food and service. It was a fairly miserable day so it was lovely to see a roaring fire. This place has a lot of potential, and a reasonable menu but was let down by the cooking of the food. There is a fairly small menu for dinner, but it contains a fairly wide selection of dishes. One of our party needed gluten free food and the staff were incredibly helpful on that front. In fact the staff were great for the whole evening. The issue was the cooking of the food. Fishcakes were deep fried and on the border of being over cooked, but were tepid inside. The fish pie was very over seasoned and the side vegetables were covered in huge lumps of sea salt. The cauliflower steak was burnt. This is a real ale pub, but the selection was very limited on the evening we were there - just one ale and an IPA

Went for dinner on a busy summer Friday, and had what was possibly the best pie and mash I've had while traveling the UK. It was the daily special (lamb), and the demiglace alone was worth raving about, but I'll also add that the lamb itself was soft and flavorful, the kale well seasoned, and the whole peas perfectly set off with a hint of horseradish. Service was also very friendly, and the pub itself cozy, warm, and welcoming. Thanks so much!

I recently stayed at the ship inn and my experience was far from satisfactory. Firstly, the room was extremely stifling, making it uncomfortable to stay in. There was no adequate ventilation or air conditioning to alleviate the heat, which significantly affected my overall comfort. Additionally, the hotel charged £19 for breakfast, which was an absolute disappointment. The quality of the food was subpar, and the croissant, in particular, was disgraceful. For the price, I expected much better. Overall, I would not recommend staying at this hotel due to the uncomfortable room conditions and the poor quality of the breakfast. There are certainly better options available for the price. Feel free to modify any part of this review to better suit your experience or add any additional details you think are important.

Honestly, I've always walked past this pub and thought it looked a bit rubbish from the outside and to be fair that has improved a little - however - step inside and you're greeted by friendly staff in a warm, old world, traditional pub. The staff were genuinely really lovely and the atmosphere was great. Knocked a star off because the nut roast was sadly mediocre and there was no add on or vegan alternative to the Yorkshire pudding, at £18 the offer of additional veg or potatoes would have been appreciated. With an improved vegan offering I'd give this place 5 stars all day long. Locally sourced drinks (alcoholic and soft) which add to the whole experience. Dog friendly (of course), warm and inviting, definitely worth a visit if you're visiting or indeed a local!

We were passing whilst on holiday and saw there was a pub quiz - it turns out it was the first of a new series of them. Spoilers: there were only three in our team and we won. A good sized pub at the bottom of the iconic Mermaid Street, this is clearly a bit more modern than the 14th century buildings around the corner, it is nonetheless a pleasant enough building and was reasonably busy on our recent Friday evening visit. The menu offered a decent enough selection of pub grub dishes, and my fish & chips with mushy peas, pickled onion, curry sauce and triple-cooked chips was a pretty good dish, with a decent piece of well cooked fish and a crispy batter, although I thought both the curry sauce and a picked onion was a somewhat unusual addition. The pub itself is quite pleasant with old beams on the ceiling and flagstones on the floor, but some of the punters let it down a little, with a noisy and annoying bunch of Apprentice wanabees on the next table for example, but that’s obviously not the pub’s fault. The staff certainly seemed friendly enough and the meal was good.

Very poor visit on this occasion considering we come very regularly. Not sure what has happened to the old staff but all new faces and not friendly faces. Majority of staff spent our entire meal on their phones behind the bar chatting like they weren’t even at work so in the end we sat ourselves and then got asked if we wanted desserts but hadn’t even had a drink let alone desserts. Me and my wife normally deal with charlie or Shannon but neither were there so hopefully just a day off. Food - we waited 45 minutes for scallops which were cold and overcooked they just tasted like oil. I guess the chef was too busy smoking and joking outside the building (hopefully washed his hands after his cigarette) We then had fish pie which is normally delicious but was bland with hardly no fish just mash. We normally have dessert but considering the meal wasn’t that great we decided to give this a miss. We love the ship and the normal staff and that’s why we always return however I think we will be looking to see what else rye has too offer. Please do better! John.

So very disappointing. Hadn’t been here for several months and took a friend for lunch as it used to be pretty good. We ordered crab rolls in tempura which turned out to be king prawns in batter accompanied by bottled soy sauce. The bread (at£2.50) was a white sliced loaf from a local shop or bakery and the wine was overpriced. Whilst the service was efficient and friendly, the rip off London prices for below average bistro food were disappointing. 18 months ago this was one of my favourite dots that showed promise of becoming a regional contender. Now it’s an overpriced tourist trap with below average food. Very disappointing.

Our visit to The Ship Inn started off really well. We enjoyed the drinks on offer and the starters were lovely. We were informed straight away of the things missing on the menu. However, it all went a bit downhill from there. We ordered two roast beef dinners which took around 45 mins after starters to arrive to table. When they did arrive, the beef was tough and cold, potatoes burnt and veg was hard. I also ordered a side of cauliflower cheese which was not only burnt on top, but cold and dry to eat. When asked if everything was ok, he asked straight away about the beef as it seemed to be a common issue. I informed the waiter of the issues and unfortunately asked for him to send the meals back and for them to be taken off the bill. This seemed to be an issue for a number of tables as we could keep hearing complaints as we were waiting for our food. It is such a shame as the staff were so friendly and the interior of the pub was lovely.

Coffee shop located inside Tescos. Seems to suffer problems with its dishwasher they have an official sign printed to state it’s out of order. Staff seemed more interested in preventing people sitting down from 1 O’clock on a Sunday. Did have the misfortune to go there for a coffee once and find due to a problem with their machine no coffee was available. Shame I never knew before my 2 mile walk to get there.

Lovely staff. Heinous ugly branding which spoils a stunning natural environment

We use cooden beach regularly as we like the venue but it is very over priced for both food and service and very hit and miss sometimes good sometimes poor usually when you take friends there .We had two large glasses of nice house wine (8.50per glass) we then had an egg mayo sandwhich shared it came with a small salad and that was it for 8.50 used to have coleslaw but no more,no problem as we ordered off the menu and knew what the price was however it stated bar service only but then put a service charge on when queried said had to stand as the food comes from the kitchen ,I think it is a shame as this is a nice venue but is very hit and miss and should not be for the high end price
