We use cooden beach regularly as we like the venue but it is very over priced for both food and service and very hit and miss sometimes good sometimes poor usually when you take friends there .We had two large glasses of nice house wine (8.50per glass) we then had an egg mayo sandwhich shared it came with a small salad and that was it for 8.50 used to have coleslaw but no more,no problem as we ordered off the menu and knew what the price was however it stated bar service only but then put a service charge on when queried said had to stand as the food comes from the kitchen ,I think it is a shame as this is a nice venue but is very hit and miss and should not be for the high end price

It used to be so amazing here - with great cocktails and great service! As things stand and based on our recent visits, they need to seriously up their game. The Cooden Beach hotel really needs a good vegan menu and staff that know how to turn the lights on at night!

Had a lovely time at this most idyllic & relaxing spot! The decor is fab and the restaurant menu and offering, very reasonable and interesting. The highlight though was the service and we were very much looked after by our waitress: Barbara who was funny, knowledgeable & brilliant. Will definitely come back again!

Only had drinks on the patio but if you charge £30.00 for another of wine that costs £9.00 at least clear tables promptly. Notice when customers arrive and please wipe the tables down after each visit. Sat there for 90 minutes and saw several people come and go but not table was wiped or cleaned!

Before writing this review I took the opportunity of reviewing some of those that showed similar levels of frustration as mine (I should have done that beforehand obviously! Obviously we are not alone in our frustrations). Our email to the manager probably says it all. This I have included below. Suffice it to say that, after more than 2 weeks, there has been no response except a commitment to get back to us. (I would suggest that treating dissatisfied customers in a cavalier fashion is not one of the attributes expected in a 4 star rating). My email was as follows: Yesterday my wife and I celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary with a party for 10 for Sunday lunch at your hotel's restaurant. In summary, it was hugely disappointing. The food was fine and as expected. The service was atrocious. Not the individuals, they did their best, but the lack of organisation and general management was very evident. Such a let-down. Significant delays on each of the courses (with no sign of an update or apology) meant that the basic 3-course meal took a little over 3 hours and that is well beyond normal expectations I would suggest certainly in a 4 star hotel restaurant. But perhaps it was the lack of management empathy and involvement - let alone an apology - which was so galling. Authorising a £10 discount in an attempt to mollify a customer paying more than £400 was, in my mind, insulting in the extreme. Raising it to 10% (without even making a personal appearance) was even more so. And finally, still attempting to levy a 10% Discretionary Service Charge? ....... surely a joke - but it wasn't! We remember the old Cooden Beach well - we had our Wedding Reception there 50 years ago - and, more recently, had lunch in the now-upgraded restaurant. As a result of that recent visit we booked a 2 night stay in the hotel and Sunday's celebratory lunch (in fact we had to cancel our hotel stay due to diary conflicts but left the lunch reservation in place). Now, as you might guess, we're not that disappointed to have had to cancel the room. Such a shame. I would welcome any comments you might have that might shed some light on what, in my mind, is a puzzling experience. (End)

Family dinner of 10. So had to give it another try. Half of us sat on a bench and the rest opposite on chairs which were a different height. Felt like a school dining room. Starter of 3 small cold scallops with some burnt shavings of chorizo. The plate was cold. (£12 really?). Small bowl of mussels (half the shells were empty). Half a slice of white bread and some fries. Small portions of pork medallions and pate starter. My husband ate my chips as he was still hungry. Small portions of desserts came with small scoops of ice cream. Many items on the menu were not available because they had a wedding party earlier and also the menu was being changed the following day . I would have expected the restaurant to have allowed for this. Limited choice. Mediocre service. Not attentive and uninterested. At these prices I would expect high quality food and excellent service. A cheap restaurant further along the beach road serves higher quality food with excellent service for two thirds the price. Oh and please get rid of those half cut fence posts on the ceiling. Cheap and tacky.

Waiter was utterly inexperienced in taking an order. Couldn’t work digital pad. Didn’t know what a Negroni was or how to spell it even. Charlie, mate try reading the menu of the venue you work out and teach yourself! Because nobody in this place is gonna teach you anything! After 40 mins we got half our drink order. Charlie charged us £59 before we got anything. Never said thank you EVER! You should bring people a bill to pay, not just tell people what they have pay. They get two stars for the food! We complained. The Manager said he’s got too big an area to cover and not enough staff! There were 6 waiters and 10 tables!!! He too is poorly trained. He offered a complimentary drink to apologise. But we’d already paid! So I ordered 1 more drink. He then asked me to pay for it. Because Charlie got the first order wrong and didn’t charge us for all the drinks! Of course we didn’t know that as nobody at any point brought a bill to us! I left! Live in this town and Cooden Beach has gone so downhill since new ownership. It’s got loads of young kids serving who are not trained. They charge top dollar prices for cheap service and it’s awful!

Shocking service. Waited ages for a menu. Made the order and waited and then told we would have to pay before the meal and the drinks. Paid then, waited and waited and only half the drinks arrived. Waiter couldn’t use the iPad and gave up on it. We had to ask 4 times for dirty glasses and plates to be removed. Food and drinks premium price but worst service ever. Avoid!

I requested to book a table but was still not allowed, because the restaurant had to be prepared for the evening hotel guests! The restaurant was not full with mostly empty tables and it was about 4pm! The waiter was apologetic but we could not get any food so had to leave!

I don’t even know where to start! If you are looking for good service and a warm welcome then go somewhere else. We had an absolutely dreadful experience here. My daughters had pre booked afternoon tea as a Mother’s Day treat and phoned again so the restaurant were expecting us. On arrival we were met by a very unwelcoming female. Eventually a waitress came and asked if we wanted tea or coffee. We weren’t offered a menu to choose which hot drink and she repeated that we could just have tea or coffee. Although our hot drinks arrived fairly quickly we had asked for water for the table and eventually after half an hour had to go and ask again for some water. At this point we also still hadn’t had the afternoon tea. After 45 minutes we were still waiting for our food. At no point did any of the serving staff notice that we still hadn’t had our food. After waiting for an hour we decided to give up and leave. We tried to explain to the assistant duty manager our concerns but he just walked off when my daughter was in mid sentence and didn’t offer any apology. His customer service was non existent and despite me trying to explain why we were unhappy he repeatedly tried to talk over me. I must add that we still paid for our drinks and were calm and polite throughout the whole time but were met with complete indifference. One of the waitresses then told us that the ordering system was faulty but other diners appeared to be eating so I think we were just forgotten about and no one bothered to check as to where our food was. My daughters were really upset, as was I, that my treat was completely spoilt by the dreadful experience we received and this was fed back to the ladies on reception as we left. Needless to say that despite the manager phoning half an hour later and offering a complimentary afternoon tea we will definitely not be returning and will make sure all our friends avoid this restaurant too.

There are very few beach hotels with charm in this country, so the Cooden Beach hotel was a pleasant surprise. It's more like an American beach motel than a proper hotel. We all went for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was nice, the staff were nice. The starters were pleasant. It was the main course, the Sunday lunch that was the letdown. Roast potatoes that have probably been sitting around most of the day. Awful chewy Yorkshire pudding. Soggy sprouts. Plowing through the main course seemed arduous and pretty tasteless. I think we would go back, but we would order food that hopefully will have been cooked fresh.

Great location, can’t say the same about the service, and can’t comment on the food as we didn’t get any. It is a very rare occasion when I would leave a negative review on anything, I am patient and tend to give the benefit of the doubt to most people/places however… After sitting about 10 minutes waiting at a table, watching others getting served, no one had come near us, so I approached a group of waiters who were standing talking, one of whom seemed to be in charge, and I politely asked if it was ok to drop in without a reservation as my wife and I had, and I checked incase I needed to order at the bar or something. I was told it was fine, and someone would be with us shortly. Needless to say, again, no one came near us, and we watched as other tables who had come in well after us were attended to, and got their food, and were actually served by some of the staff that I had spoken to, yet still we sat there basically ignored by everyone. After about another 15-20 minutes of this we just got up and left. After 20-25 minutes sitting at a table with 2 menus and not even so much as a cold drink on the table, someone out of the 4-5 waiters and manager/person in charge walking past us serving others, even after I had spoken to them, surely someone would have noticed that we had not been attended to, but no. Very poor service indeed. Won’t be back.

Frequent visitors for coffee or sandwich, yet every time there is a staffing issue! Previously whilst ordering at bar and observing the start of the coffee making process, paying and being told it would be brought to our table in the adjoining seating area, its taken 20 minutes having given staff a chase up. Then today ordered at bar charged £8.65 first time then for same Latte and Cappucino £7.90 next time. On receiving drinks after another lengthy wait, asked why the two different prices only to be told in broken English that first time we order at table so they added service charge. Explained we ordered at bar and don't you remember??? Received an apology but no offer of a refund. May only be 75p but its the principal. Ordered sandwiches 3-4pm so not busy, took ages, nothing special very little mayonnaise but wait staff don't take names and proceeded to give our sandwiches to a different table and when told by those customers they hadn't ordered them, went to take them away. Hotel is nice, but staff just do not seem remotely interested and do not match up with the grading and level of standard this hotel is setting out to achieve.

Our first visit since renovations and we were hoping that it would be a good experience. We were certainly not disappointed. The service was excellent, (a particular mention for Andre who went out of his way to ensure that our meal was enjoyable, especially for our small three year old grandson!). The newly renovated hotel was beautiful, the food exceptionally good, the service and ambience made for a wonderful visit. We were lucky that the day was fine and sunny and we had a table by the window looking out to sea - perfect! An additional plus was the singer/guitarist playing on the terrace but the music was piped into the restaurant, a lovely touch in our opinion and not too loud. We will certainly be returning very soon, bringing friends with us and will certainly recommend the hotel/restaurant.

I popped in on Sunday with my mum for a bite to eat on the terrace. After sitting for 10 mins, and not being even acknowledged by any of the waiting staff, I had get up and grab our own menus. The staff did apologise but they were not busy so no excuse to be ignored for so long. Anyway mum had mussels which were nice and I had the veggie burger. The driest most tasteless thing I have attempted t eat in a long time. This is the sort of cheap veggie dross that used to be served up many years ago. But now there are fantastic meat substitutes widely available. The small portion of chips were ok. And there was a bowl of leaves too! But at £20 and the worst veggie burger I can remember it’s a rip-off. There was no communication from the waiting staff as to wether we were enjoying our meals, even though I had only taken one bite of the burger. We left soon after. Maybe this is why they insist on the customer paying BEFORE they get fed! AVOID

We were disappointed to say the least as if they serve until four o'clock how do they not have enough servings for bookings. Three of us had the chicken however the roast potatoes were dry as if they had been warmed up. We have eaten here many times before and have been pleased with the food but not this time. After our meal we were chatting at the table and were asked to move tables even though the restaurant was empty?? We spent nearly £200 so not a cheap lunch at all. We won't be booking to come again and will not recommend.

The setting next to the sea is lovely. The furnishing and decor excellent. The staff friendliness is good. The quality of the food is excellent (the best roast beef I have ever had). The training of the staff is poor. It was a bit like Faulty Towers, hapless waiters confused and unskilled. We had starters passed down the table rather than served individually. A huge crash of dishes near our table. I know it is hard to find staff but give them a little bit to go on rather than throw them in at the deep end and hope they can swim.

Booked a table for 4 for Sunday lunch, it will be the last time, briefly.. Starters took 30 mins or so, and we're OK at best. 40 muns later a "waiter" appeared asking who was having the roast beef?.. (all of us).. probably need to clear the starters first young man? Oh yes.. Then proceeds to lean across table rather than walking around.. 3 roasts over done and 1 pink.. All 4 virtually and not a sole to complain to. Vegetables had been boiled to death, and then left under a hot lamp Antilles the edges were crispy! Requested extra gravy, mustard and horseradish, none of which appeared despite asking a 2nd waiter.. An eternity later, a young lady asked if we would like desert, I flippantly asked for horseradish, and she vanished for another 10 mins..

Once we secured a table on the busy Terrace and managed to find some menus, here are the pros and cons: PROS 1. Nice spot, lovely views (thank you nature) 2. One member of our party really enjoyed their sandwich CONS 1. Table cleared of previous customers drinks, but not wiped down. 2. Drinks order took 20 minute to arrive! 3. 'Americano' had cooled down and did not look or taste like a decent Americano - filter coffee perhaps? 4. Coffee spoon filthy 5. Food took 2 minutes to arrive! Bizarre! 6. One sandwich - stale, cold, white bread 7. Coleslaw - thickly chopped up and tasteless 8. Bog standard sandwich £8.50!!! 9. Bowl of fries £8!!! 10. Extortionate prices 12. Service - polite enough. However, possibly a lot of very young, seasonal, staff who have had very little training, quite timid and lacking confidence in just putting plates down on a table. It's up to management to ensure that all staff are comfortable enough in their roles. Why didn't we say anything? Because a family member wanted to 'treat' us and we didn't want to detract from their experience. Never again.

Sadly I cannot give no stars! I had to wait 50 min before they took my breakfast order. The coffee was cold, asked for it to be changed, high took another 10 min. After an hour! Good finally arrived, a very disappointing egg benedict. The ham was cold and the bread probably old! The beat thing about today’s meal was some brown toast with butter that I had to ask for and was never offered! It arrived after my eggs. Room for improvement

We have been coming to the Brasserie for several years now. This was our first visit since lockdown. Wow the prices, £19 for fish and chips, £18 for a burger ! I know there is the view to factor in but it just feels like they are being greedy. You will in fact get more business by not overcharging. The food is good but not that good. The service was dire. We were seated at our table and no-one came over to take our order, we had to try and catch someone'e eye which wasn't easy. Our 2nd round of drinks we could see sitting on the bar for ages but weren't bought over to us. Had to ask twice before we got them by then we had near enough finished our meal. There was plenty of staff milling around but there didn't seem to be anyone in charge which is really what it needs.

I was seated outdoors at 520 pm. I was subsequently totally ignored by all their waiting staff even though they had several tables empty so were not full. The final straw was when a waiter took the order of party who had just been seated at the table next to mine even though I had been waiting patiently for some 15 minutes. Decided to take my money to an establishment that valued my custom.

Coffee shop located inside Tescos. Seems to suffer problems with its dishwasher they have an official sign printed to state it’s out of order. Staff seemed more interested in preventing people sitting down from 1 O’clock on a Sunday. Did have the misfortune to go there for a coffee once and find due to a problem with their machine no coffee was available. Shame I never knew before my 2 mile walk to get there.
