Shocking experience - don't go. The open kitchen was a shocking mess, staff were miserable. Only one waiter serving about 12 tables, so massively slow. I ordered a green tea and had to remind the waiter after 15 minutes. Loads of options were off the menu and the same sad four plates of old sushi went around the conveyor belt for the hour plus that we were in there. I heard another customer ordering a beer, to be told they had run out that day - but previous reviews have reported no beer in stock so this is obviously a lie. I don't blame the staff - but the management obviously take York as a tourist town for granted and don't keep the place clean, properly staffed, or stocked. Absolutely diabolical.

We come often but went for the first time for bottomless sushi, the food was amazing as usual and our server (young girl, dark hair, low pony tail at work 24/10 (4pm shift)) was lovely and couldn’t do enough! Our main issue was with the cooks. One young lady (red hair) was swearing, bad mouthing customers and staff the whole time we were in there, she was also using her phone in the kitchen area and did not have gloves on a few times and was eating in the prep areas. The male chef (bald) had lettuce placed on his head by another staff member and we didn’t see them dispose of it, using produce in an open kitchen being seen by customers? Seemed like they were there to play around. It’s a shame as the staff have always been fantastic. We will return as we love the place and do come often but feel like upper management need to speak to staff regarding manners and kitchen etiquette.

Really disappointing experience, started off poor when the waitress said they were limited in terms of drinks and they had no beers of any description. So instead ordered a Prosecco, served with a plastic flute?!? Sushi selection average but my twelve year old daughter likes it. Food conveyor belt very grubby with lots of food debris evident. Seating area had food and napkins under the table as we sat. Ordered the seafood Ramen; £15 - only found three pieces of salmon in it, no calamari, no prawns and no egg as advertised and looked nothing like the photo in the menu. Staff very apologetic and agreed to remove from bill, no issue with the service. However one staff member was standing in the food prep area without a hairnet or uniform eating a bag of Haribos which doesn’t look professional or hygienic. Will definitely not be visiting again, the final insult when I paid the bill was that I wasn’t asked to complete the customer feedback form on their payment system, which to me is dishonest. Won’t be returning unless hell freezes over.

Gorgeous - spanking hot salmon & steaming noodles & crunchy peppers - all prepared in the open kitchen in the centre of the restaurant. Excellent, friendly, fast service. Neither my sister and I had been before - we would both most definitely recommend. Price wise - surprisingly reasonable £7.95 each for the mains, good dessert selection. 7% "voluntary service charge" on the cards-only bill. Politely presented "would you like to refuse?", gentle tone and a friendly smile - not a threat. Definitely worth a visit.

First of all, I really felt sorry for the waitress, nearly everything we ordered she had to apologise for 'I'm so sorry, but we have ran out of stock' I think she was genuinely embarrassed - and the chefs and management were simply not interested, miserable and simply couldnt be bothered. In summary, we had booked for an evening meal 1 week before for the 6/8/24 for 4 people. We were informed that most of the chicken dishes were not available, only fish, beef and duck. We ordered sushi and then fancied the popcorn squid, only to find out they also didnt have stock of that. We ordered a bottle of dry blush wine, (they didnt have stock), so we ordered a bottle of dry white, they didnt have stock, so we ordered the only other bottle of dry white wine on the menu... guess what,,, they didnt have stock, we ended up with 2 glasses of wine before they completely ran out. We wont be going back there and suggest you dont go either

I had dinner at YO! tonight. The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient, which made for a pleasant visit. However, the food was just so-so. The taste was quite different from what you'd expect in Asia, leaning more towards a fast-food interpretation of Japanese cuisine. Overall, it was an alright experience, but don't expect authentic flavors.

I arrived with my daughter and waited patiently for 10 minutes. I was told they wouldn't be long. A man and his son arrived without a booking and after 5 minutes he was shown to a table. We waited a further 10 minutes. I expect this in a middle eastern country...not York.

Ok so , the faux duck fries !!!!!! delicious !!!!! when you are ACTUALLY eating the fake duck. Been twice and each time ordered the faux duck fries. took a bite of the duck fries and instantly knew it was real meat. I’ve been vegetarian for over 10 years, the reason i went veggie was because i really don’t like the taste of real meat. So that’s why i knew the difference. My boyfriend even tested it . the way his face dropped 😭 Anyways…. i got a refund both times this happened. Just a warning. go with someone who eats meat to taste test before you do .

Our waitress was really good, and the food was also really really good (once it arrived)! The only reason for really writing this review is because the restaurant was a mess. Upon entry there’s a broken iPad next to the takeaway section- just put it in a cupboard or something right? Not a great first impression. We were then seated next to a dirty section on the bar- or so I assumed. It turned out this was actually just a front of house ‘staff section’. Cutlery, bowls etc were kept here but I can’t understand why. There was literally a clean side above some fridges about 1 metre away. Although I wouldn’t get annoyed at the staff directly, it seemed unnecessary to have this mess right next to where we were eating. The belt had pretty much no food on it- not so much of an issue but I thought this was just a Covid thing- also where are the water taps? The food is naturally quite salty and waiting 15 minutes for staff to put tap water onto an iPad to then go and serve three other tables before grabbing it seems annoying for both staff and customers. As mentioned, the food was actually great once it arrived- even if it did take a while (which would be excusable if it was busy?). There were only 3 other tables in and the chef next to the ovens spent a lot of his time on his phone or eating out of a takeaway box, which seemed quite unhygienic for a chef in an open kitchen? My last point is about the poor waitress having to explain that there’s a service charge which can be added on request- something which seems really awkward when the staff themselves don’t have influence on what happened- also humiliating and pressurising for the customer. Would go for the food again, although it seems quite overpriced nowadays. The restaurant could do with some TLC and potentially some investment into staff training, especially on the hot section- I assume the old chap was new. I used to come here quite a lot back in the early 2010’s when it first opened, it seems a shame that it’s so quiet now. It never seems to be busy when Wagamamas always has a queue.- I’m sure they used to be rivals?

We waited a long time to be seated despite having booked and the waiting staff walking past numerous times without acknowledging us. The seating, table etc were all a bit grubby. Virtually no food going round the conveyor belt apart from some prawn crackers and some sad looking unappetising cucumbers. We ordered through the app but had to pay the waiting staff - really hard work to get anyone’s attention. Whole place felt chaotic and that no one was in charge. Poor value for money and poor customer service. We live in York and have been in here many times before - it was my daughter’s favourite. We won’t be coming back!

Sadly this was just not up to standard. The service was ok, there was a decent selection on the conveyor belt but dirty soy jars, filthy glassware and food scattered all over the area we were sat in is just not acceptable. The business model of Yo sushi was the sushi on the conveyor belt. You pick from a variety of plates and pay afterwards. In the past great experience but this Thursday was awfull! Almost no plates and choice on converyor belt, ordering was complicated and orders didn’t arrive on the handhelds. Personal apologized but the problems were definitely structural. I hope it will be better soon. Very disappointed

The cooks were continually shouting to the point we could barely hear ourselves talk, and by the time my friends food came I'd nearly finished mine. What's more, rather there being an ambiguity to why this was the case like in most restaurants, here you could blatantly see the cooks laughing and joking as opposed to getting on with the cooking. Thankfully, the food was really good when it came, but the service was third rate with staff that had no manners.

Used to eat here a lot but haven't been back for over 18 months. Went recently and the service was terrible. The place was full of dirty tables and lots of dirty dishes stacked on the side even though the restaurant was pretty quiet. We ordered our food and got the drinks and 1 food item pretty quickly. After 20mins we noticed that no-one was cooking any hot food and we were still awaiting 4 hot items. We asked the waitress who said it was on its way and would be 2 minutes. She had a quiet word with someone in the kitchen and then he started cooking our order. When it eventually came another 10mns later the food was great. When we were leaving and wanted to pay our bill there was no-one around. We spoke to a kitchen person who then found the server

Really disappointed, normally enjoy Yo but sadly today was not the case, the table was dirty and food debris on the menu, the belt only had two or three things on it, no puddings, just really basic stuff, ordered food which took over 20 minutes to come and the guy in the kitchen prepping food had a beard and no hair net on it!

Very slow service. 3 people in the kitchen and only one seemed to be actually trying to get food out. Only one person front of house who was totally clueless and had no urgency whatsoever. The food was nice when it eventually came out but we had to keep pestering the staff to get anything to the table. Other tables were experiencing the same and threatening to walk out. Lots of other reviews mentioning the slow service, come on YO!, get your act together and listen to your customer base.

Good food but not great service due to not enough staff on hand. Drinks and condiments took 20 minutes to arrive and food is very overpriced for the quantity. Upsetting to see cheap mayonnaise has been utilised instead of the lovely Japanese mayo. It is clear that overheads have been cut… a shame that this is now reflecting in the overall experience I used to love.

Visité este restaurante en su primer día de reapertura después del cierre de COVID, y quedé realmente impresionado. Tienen un nuevo sistema de pedidos y un menú ligeramente reducido, pero la comida era excelente y el servicio del personal era excepcional. Nos hicieron sentir bienvenidos y seguros. ¡Estamos especialmente agradecidos con el gerente, que fue excelente en hacer malabares con las reservas, y con la señora que administraba la cocina, que pudo preparar comida increíble al mismo tiempo que interactuar de manera segura con nuestros niños curiosos! No puedo recomendar lo suficiente.

We tried here yesterday as both my wife and I are sushi fans and were hoping for great things, sadly we were disappointed. Firstly I dont know if we were the furthest table away from the preparation area or what, but there was very litte food that reached us on the conveyor, I guess what actually reached us was the food that noone was interested in. Secondly the sushi was poor, I mean it broke apart as you touched it and you were left trying to scoop it up to eat it. Thirdly the garnish was more substantial than the food on the dish and we left feeling unsatified, yes we could have eaten more, but the time between ordering and it coming to the table wasn't very timely.Unfortunately Yo! is overpriced for what it is and I think we will stick to our regular sushi haunts.

I could spend the money somewhere else. Went to have lunch and sat (wherever I wanted) because the lady/waitress (red hair with soo much make-up) was too busy discussing with her friends. I was extremely hungry and ready to order. I didn’t want to push the “help” button as I think it’s rude so instead of that I starred at the lady hoping that she would finish her long happy chat with her friends...Finally she came, the food was awfull.. I had the chance to eat at Yo Cambridge and I could feel the difference. The sofas are extremely too close to each other as the guy behind me started to strech litterally over me... so I felt annoyed and couldn’t wait to leave. It’s a sad place where everyone it’s fed up with their job. So... no thank you.

En York Como en el pasado, cenamos aquí y tuvimos una gran experiencia, sin embargo, el servidor de esta noche fue bastante grosero inicialmente. Nos recibió una joven que era encantadora y nos ayudó a explorar el menú, sin embargo, cuando se trataba de pagar, nos recibió un empleado (¿Carl?) Que tenía una actitud y parecía haber terminado de servirme a mí y a mi amigo. Cuando se nos preguntó si pudimos dividir la factura, aprobamos una factura completa y le pedimos que lo resolviera entre nosotros a pesar de que en las visitas anteriores no hubo ningún problema con el servidor que dividió la factura entre nosotros. Simplemente sirve para mostrar el servicio con una sonrisa que recorrería un largo camino. Todos tienen días largos, pero no hay excusa para desquitarse con clientes amables. Dudaría en volver si se reunió con el servicio grosero una vez más.

We've been to Yo Sushi York every week for the last 2 months, with family and as a couple.We always just order drinks and street food as soon as we go in.Every time there's either 1 or 2 dishes missing or just don't turn up.It's getting to a point where if we are getting full we don't bother chasing the missing dishes up. I know there's been a bit of a staff change here over the last year, but it's simple to get this right. The food is always good, although slight things keep getting dropped from the menu but overall it's always enjoyable eating here.Can the staff also ask people if they require more drinks once the glasses or cups are looking empty !!Many Thanks

My wife and I have not been to Yo! since it changed its' name and our nearest one closed, so it was a nice surprise to eat in the Yo! York restaurant.The staff are friendly and helpful. The hot food we ordered was cooked very well indeed and reminded us why we like these restaurants. This was despite part of the kitchen not in use due to a technical fault.Already planning to eat here again when we next visit York,

I've been to loads of branches of Yo! over the years and never had a problem before I visited the one in York. I've been there a few times and the consistently slow and disinterested service tends to give the impression that the waiting staff find customers a bit of an inconvenience. Gave it another go today but it'll probably be my last visit. I went alone for an early lunch when the restaurant was about three quarters empty. I was told by the staff member greeting customers that I would have to sit at the bar because tables are only for groups. Fair enough if the restaurant was busy, but there was hardly anyone in at the time, and a gentleman was sat alone at a table right next to where we were standing so that obviously wasn't true. I explained that I don't find the bar stools comfortable but was still refused one of the ample seats, so I decided to leave and had a very pleasant lunch elsewhere. I don't generally like to leave negative reviews, but this kind of treatment has been a pattern at the York branch and just seems off to me. I hope the restaurant improves its service, because this isn't a good way to treat disabled customers and there are plenty of other options about.

Would not go again. Was perfectly fine when there were just 2 tables in the restaurant, but when it was busy, the head waitress decided to go on her break, and clearly left the barely trained guy practically by himself. Wrong food went to the wrong table. Someone in the kitchen wasn't very well trained either, and couldn't figure out how to use a blowtorch. Some of the sushi that we got did not have enough of the ingredients in it, which we erre refunded for, but it should've been correct the first time around. I normally love Yo Sushi, but I won't be going back to this one again.

Really enjoyable experience. Took my daughter and two of her friends . We all really loved it - especially as it is so different to what I would consider a ‘normal’ restaurant. We will definitely be back.

We have been to several Yo Sushi restaurants but this was our first visit to the York one and it will be the last. The food - my husband had Katsu Chicken and although light on the curry sauce and therefore a bit dry, he said it was ok. Quite tasty. We had asked for knives and forks before the food came. Asked twice more and then got up to go find someone to ask yet again. I ordered veg fried rice and seafood ramen. We also ordered the £9.95 California rolls with crispy onions to share. The rice was totally inedible as they seemed to have emptied the salt pot into it!! To be fair, they changed it and it was not salty and edible. The ramen was not nice and it’s a dish I order regularly and also make at home. This ramen was overpowering l, had far too much chilli, raw onion and hardly any seafood. I left it.

Would like to have said I enjoyed it however! Mixed review really. Lost a star for the slow poor service and another for the terrible dessert platter and also lost another star for the ridiculous price. My husband was furious and still hungry! I couldn't take it down to 1 star though because I really enjoyed SOME of the dishes. My husband said it's the worst meal he has ever had and the most expensive! Never mind. Was actually looking forward to trying it out. Probably wouldn't return. X

Pedimos la entrega desde aquí y tengo que decir que fue la comida más decepcionante que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Nada de eso era fresco, incluso el brócoli tenía partes negras del tallo debido a la edad. ¿El arroz de sushi sabía a vinagre, posiblemente debido a intentos de preservar el pescado? No pude comer después de unos momentos y tuve que prepararme la cena, afortunadamente mi esposo tiene estándares más bajos y lo comió. Ninguno de nosotros se enfermó por eso, así que eso es algo. This was the first time I had been to Yo Sushi... Walking in it felt like a fast food restaurant, greasy, sticky tables. This would be fine if it weren't for how much this place costs. They recommend 4-5 dishes per person, ranging in price, the cheapest around £3/£4, so that comes very easily to a total of £20/30 per person, before you even think about drinks... The service is poor, and its not a great experience. And to top it off, it felt on the whole dirty, food was cold, all explained by the 3 star hygiene rating

We enjoyed our lunch stop here where Jason, our server, was very helpful and efficient. My children love this chain and the York branch was excellent. We were told about a great deal where kids can eat free - this certainly brought the bill down and we all had very tasty food. We will be back next time we’re down this way.

Visited with my girlfriend for a late lunch and was blown away by the impeccable service and the amazing food. The spicy seafood ramen was delicious and the chicken fried rice also went down a treat. Thanks to Charmaine our server for making our trip really special and ensuring that we had the best experience possible. Will definitely be visiting again!

I have been here a few times now and have always had bang average sushi. However, I hoped it would have been different but today’s sushi was not even average... I’m a great lover of sushi and was really disappointed. I’ve been to many other Yo Sushi’s in other cities and had better food. There was also hardly any food on the conveyor belt, mainly desserts. This meant we had to push the button a lot, this wouldn’t have been an issue if the service wasn’t so slow. I won’t be going back, it’s a shame because there aren’t many places you can go for sushi in York.

Myself, my brother and my daughter were here on Monday while on a visit from Ireland. We had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the food. I'd never been to a Yo! Sushi restaurant before so the experience was all new but the staff were very helpful and very friendly! Next time in York I'll be sure to visit again.

Fantastic service from arrival to leaving. Party of 6, all who have never been to yo sushi before. Becca was BRILLIANT from start to finish with the whole party, whilst entertaining the 2 children included. Was fantastic in explaining food, taking order, serving food and aftercare. Would highly recommend this restaurant and the service it provided! Converted yo sushi fans!! :)

I am a regular visitor (2 or 3 times a month). The chefs always smile and say hello. There is so much option (even though I tend to stick to the same half dozen dishes). If you are a big eater like me it can get a little expensive but if you stick to the cheaper dishes you will be ok. Never had any complaints with either the staff or the food. I wouldn't necessarily go at peak times because obviously you will have to wait both for a seat and the dishes that you want. That will be the same in any popular restaurant. Thoroughly recommended. Try and attend Mon or Wed as those are the days the special offers are on. They are well worth taking up.

This was my first visit to a Yo! Sushi; so I can't honestly say whether it's a good or bad one - presumably they are all more or less the same and I enjoyed it anyway. Fortunately I had my daughter with me who's been to them before but the staff are willing to explain the concept if needed. I believe it's the normal practice for food just to come out as prepared so if you've ordered several dishes from the kitchen they just appear as and when. I like the conveyor belt system, healthy choices, vegetarian options, water taps and pricing policy. Certainly a place where women on their own can eat without feeling ill at ease. The push button system to summon the staff is a great idea and it's a pity some other places don't adopt it.

It is best when Jamie is working there, and the girl who is about the same age as him (with the lovely eyelashes!), as they are really attentive and know how to be approachable and remember everything. When Jamie has been away, I have felt it not as friendly and my order has been forgotten. I picked up that there was a bit of unease between the hardworking chefs and the new woman there as I heard them say it was time for a meeting hahaha

Once we entered this place we were met by a sign saying to wait to be seated. We waited a couple of minutes before a unfriendly staffmember sent us to a table. There was no given information and we had to approach the waitresses for everything. The same sushi was on the belt and looked like it had been there for hours. Impossible to eat with sticks because all pieces just fell apart. Staff seemed uncoordinated with no cooperation between them. Did not feel welcome in this place and just wanted to finish food and get out as fast as possible. Ended up paying a lot more money than it was worth for such a poor service and tasteless sushi.

We were seated quickly and all was explained by a lovely lady but thats where it ends...there was hardly any sushi going round we ordered 2 dishes off the cook fresh but they took ages to come out, there was 2 'lads' spraying each other with what looked like cleaning spray and one stood behind the post just off the side eating..the toilets upstairs were disgusting, the bits of food we did have were ok but could of been so much better especially for the price. Disappointed :(

Yo Sushi is always a safe decision for us as we know it will be delicious. We have an 8 year old who loves it, and she is never disappointed as she loves to try new things. What I found most delightful about this place was the staff; Elle was very friendly and even offered to take a family photo of us (which turned out to be a lovely photo), and Becca was very quick to bring our orders and overall one of the friendliest waitresses I have ever encountered. I would definitely reccomend a visit here

Had a quiet Sunday evening dinner. Hot food cooked to order was delicious (see pictures!) Amazing flavour and fresh. The cold dishes were very good. Wine was really good and reasonable price. Service was excellent, friendly and engaging. The chefs were having a little sing at the end of the night which was great and got to try some off menu dishes!! Special thanks to Charmaine, Jo and Lewis for a great night.

Me and my family have been coming here for a couple of years now. We were addicted to the point of coming 3-4 times a month (we live an hour away) just for sushi. The staff were always lovely and the food great. But the past few times we’ve been the staff have changed over (which is inevitable) and now they are so rude and disinterested! Over the past few months the staff have gotten worse especially the last 3 times we have been ignored when pressing the button to order (multiple times to try and catch their attention). They get grouchy because we interrupted their conversations with other staff or friends that have come in to say hi. So then they take it out on us. It’s clear the chefs (who appear to be the staff they’ve had for a while and are lovely) we’re getting angry with the waitresses for delivering to the wrong tables, getting the orders wrong, ignoring people. We were sat waiting for so long for our bill one of the chefs (really sweet girl) came over and asked if we were still waiting she then shouted across to one of the girls just stood doing nothing that we had been waiting. She then walks back over to continue cooking and about 5 min later comes back over and shouts to her again ‘what are you playing at?’ As she was still just stood about chatting!!! Finally paid thanked the lady so much as at that point we just wanted to leave. We could have left without paying and the waitresses wouldn’t have cared the least!! devastated that my favourite food place has turned out this way! Sad to say we will never be coming back to this yo sushi again.

I finally got the opportunity to visit YO! Sushi in York and I am hooked! I have been multiple times in the last week taking full advantage of the student discount and the fact it's a lovely environment and affordable option to take the children during the school holidays. The food is amazing quality, fresh and has a clearly marked vegan menu. I love the fact you can see your food being cooked and know exactly what you are getting, there's nowhere to hide for kitchen staff so I was at peace knowing our meals were cooked in a clean environment with seperated areas for vegan and non vegan items. Any food we had to order came quickly and the staff were a delight. Really professional but friendly, great with the children. Which made it a exciting experience for all the family, the children loved the fact they could pick up their own food at the 'robot restaurant' on the belts. Will definitely be going back again. Its our new favourite eatery.

Local and come here lots. Food is amazing, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and gluten free options, and there’s always new specials. So many deserts and drink options, from alcohols to matcha, soft drinks, teas and hot chocolates. I am inclined to their unique selection of high quality teas, their jasmine tea one of the best I’ve tried. Service is always quick and very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is so peaceful and calm. And of course the place and outside area are beautifully decorated. Reasonably priced as well. The most underrated cafe in York by far.
