I am such a matcha girlie. And of course, Ippuku was the 1st place when I searched for the best matcha places in York. It was actually amazing. The matcha brownie was delicious too. I couldn't take the pictures but it was worth trying. If you're a matcha lover and happen to be in York, Ippuku is the perfect place for you.

Beautiful, authentic Japanese dishes bursting with flavour. Best meal I’ve had in years! Service was great and we were even able to buy some sesame chilli oil from their little shop! Will definitely be back 😍

My friend absolutely loves this place and I've never had (good) matcha before. We picked up an iced matcha latte today and it was bloody delicious. The staff just made me happy n all they all seemed like they enjoy being there, which is delightful to see. Thanks very much!

Such a wholesome cafe. The staff were lovely and nice. I ordered an iced matcha latte and the yuzu cheesecake. The iced matcha latte was nice, but I wish the matcha was a bit stronger. A bit too light for me. The yuzu lemon cheesecake was great! Would come back again for it! Overall great place, would come back again!

Friendly service, enjoyed special promotion as part of York Promotion Week which meant I was able to try a Gyutama Donburi for reduced price. Helpful staff and nice food on a super cold day.

The matcha latte is really good. Get the right sweetness. However the matcha cake is disappointing. Not much favor of matcha and the cake is bit dry. Just a typical cake. That’s why I rate the food as 3-star. The latte is 5-star and the matcha cake is 1-star. For the atmosphere part, the staff conversation is bit too loud and overheard that he/she was complaining something. not a decent atmosphere I expect. the service is all good and the staff is pretty nice.

Don’t go here if it’s your first time. I felt berated for wanting to have a nice experience. My first time in York, was really looking for a cute cafe to take pics and hang out. This place had wonderful reviews. The waiter who sat me down didn’t take my order for about 15 minutes. So I went to the till to order. In the end I was confused I got my order in take away cups when the waiter who sat me down took my order?? Confusing. The chef person said I must pay £3 extra to eat in and then told me that someone should have taken my order at my table if I wanted to eat it. He didn’t shout and was soft spoken but as my first time in the cafe I felt scolded. The cafe is small. 3 staff in total. When I arrived 2 groups had left. There was just me and my friend and then while waiting 1 other group came to eat in. Note - they weren’t serving any hot food, it was only drinks and dessert. Every staff was at fault here not taking care of customers or welcoming. The waiter was kind but negligent, so was the chef staff. I ended up just taking it to go, York is a beautiful place. But it was the worst experience I’ve ever had and left me in tears. This is something that’s so easily avoided/fixed, but the solution was £3 to eat in because no one took my order. I still waited 15 min to order and another 10-15min for my order. It’s a small place, only 3 staff. How did it go all wrong.

Gluten free and vegan options abound Very friendly staff and delicious cake

Unfortunately, no drinks ever arrived. Sat at 13:00, nothing arrived by 13:30. Family of 4 arrive after our seating, complete their order, and are served before we are. In the end, we received nothing and left. Mistakes do happen, and the order ticket was lost in this case and we did receive a sincere apology, but it should be obvious when one table is missing their entire order for half an hour. The food and drinks look incredible, hence my disappointment.

My absolute go to place for a feel good Japanese meal - the only place so far in the UK where the tastes matches what I’ve had when I’ve visited Japan in the past. The staff are so lovely as well and the food tastes so delicious! The only reason I would give this a 4.5 stars is only because I felt the portions were a bit on the smaller side - but that is literally the only reason. xx

Matcha is dull and tasteless. Ordered onigiri - waited forever - and got the wrong one.

Teriyaki mayo tofu, tamago-don and vegetable gyoza were absolutely delicious. Authentic Japanese teas and matcha deserts were also otherworldly. The staff kindly and promptly accommodated my dietary requirement (I eat halal), which I genuinely appreciated. Thank you so much! I will definitely return soon 🙏

Local and come here lots. Food is amazing, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and gluten free options, and there’s always new specials. So many deserts and drink options, from alcohols to matcha, soft drinks, teas and hot chocolates. I am inclined to their unique selection of high quality teas, their jasmine tea one of the best I’ve tried. Service is always quick and very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is so peaceful and calm. And of course the place and outside area are beautifully decorated. Reasonably priced as well. The most underrated cafe in York by far.

This looks to be a popular place in York for its uniqueness. The customers looked really happy with their food, and for myself the matcha was a standard (lovely) matcha. The prices were London level which surprised me (over £4) and this brought the atmosphere down for me a touch.

También le pedí a mi padre que probara su chocolate caliente negro, al que él también declaró lo sabroso que era, y que se servía a la temperatura de bebida correcta. Delicious food! The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was very cozy. Amazing for gluten free food - everything on the menu was gluten free aside from one or two dishes, and all the desserts were gluten free!

I visited Ippuku Tea House last saturday. Lovely food! However, I did feel under pressure from the waitress to finish my food. She ended up taking my plate before I had even finished.

A must-see place when you come to York. I'm writing this because I love Yipuk and have been there many times, so I'd like you to go and try it. It started as a Japanese tea company, and later opened a restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese tea and Japanese food. Japanese teahouse in the land of tea🇯🇵🍵 ・Japanese tea (sencha, hojicha, genmaicha, matcha) is apparently imported from Yame, Kagoshima, etc. Matcha latte is a delicious combination of oat milk and maple syrup! ・Home cooking (teriyaki bowl, beef bowl, ginger bowl, egg bowl, rice ball, grilled rice ball) It feels like the taste of mom, and it's good for the mind and body that are tired from being in a foreign country lol I had never eaten teriyaki rice bowl in Japan, so when I tried it for the first time, I was surprised at how delicious it was lol. I definitely like the gyudon at Ippuk over the Japanese chain restaurants. It's fun to have a seasonal menu. ・Dessert There are many cakes made with matcha, soybean flour, tofu, yuzu, hojicha, etc. Sometimes we also have shortcakes and puddings. I'm surprised that it's delicious and all gluten-free. I hope there will be more cafes like this in Japan. There are many "Japanese" restaurants in the UK, but this is the one where you can enjoy authentic Japanese home cooking. The interior has hand-painted Japanese paintings, and the relaxing atmosphere will soothe your soul. The two elements of York and Japanese teahouse blend together in a very nice way. The tote bags and aprons are cute and make great souvenirs. The courtyard is recommended on sunny days. It's a popular restaurant, so it's best to make a reservation by phone! ! If there are no seats available that day, there is a system where you can provide your phone number and we will contact you as soon as a seat becomes available. The entire city is a tourist destination, so you may want to go sightseeing until a seat becomes available. They are tolerant of children, and I have even seen tourists bring suitcases with them. I love that the owner is a very nice person and he is very particular about providing the best Japanese food, so the food and cakes are always fresh and delicious.

Absolutely incredible - and amazing if you are gluten free too! The owner is Japanese so almost all the baked things and food are gluten free. After finishing the Tamago Don for lunch we got two onigiri and a matcha cookie to go for later. Don’t miss it if you’re nearby!

Absolutely lovely will go again! Drinks are reasonably priced, food may be a little expensive to some people, £18 for a platter consisting of rice, pickled assorted veg, soup, teyraki chicken and assorted condiments. Really good for people allergic to gluten, lactose or soya. Many alternatives. The front part at the counter is accessible, however there are steps up to the seating area making it difficult for wherlchair users. Lovely staff!

This would have been a lovely experience had we not been left sat with our empty plates for at least 30 minutes with no sign of any servers as they all were too busy chatting by the register. We wanted to order desserts, but that was obviously not an option. Another two girls left the same way, and their empty dishes were still there the entire time we were sat waiting. It was at a very quiet time with almost no other customers, so I fail to see a justifiable reason for why this happened. Disappointed.

Este es un lugar pequeño, íntimo y extremadamente amable, que sirve comida a juego, muy auténticamente japonés, con una brillante selección de saki, cervezas y tés japoneses. Una gran variedad de comidas fraguadas (carne/pollo/tofu) , con todos los lados correctos, hacen que pedir sea realmente fácil, (aunque las Yaki Onigiri, bolas de arroz fritas, son un lado adicional irresistible! ) , además hay especiales diarios. ¡Asegúrese de tener la Sopa Miso! - viene con las comidas establecidas, pero se puede pedir con otros platos. Evidentemente, también hacen maravillosos helados, pasteles y cafés, si eso es lo que quieres. ¡Muy recomendable!

For brunch, I got take Tamago-yaki set. For lunch, I got the chicken teishoku set. Both are very delicious! I went back everyday for the matcha latte - Very smoky, subtle, healthy.

My husband and I have been going to Ippuku since 2018 and it's our absolute favorite restaurant in York! The food is always amazing and the staff are all wonderful. We go regularly for dinner, breakfast/brunch and sometimes pop in just for drinks and desserts too. They make the best matcha lattes and matcha desserts! I also like to buy their matcha to make lattes and bake with it at home. Additionally they also sell a bunch of cute merch and Japanese snacks! One of their staff also makes adorable origami earrings you can buy there as well!

Expensive for what you get, spent 36 pound and mostly just had a tiny bit of rice with a drink and desert each. Nothing special that couldn't be made at home easily either so couldn't justify going again and paying for what i got. Nice atmosphere and staff.

I used to love Ippuku when I was in York more often couple of years ago. I am not sure what happened but when I tried it recently food is not the same. Maybe cook has changed but food resembles more of Chinese style 'healthy' fast food. No as yummy as it used to be. Both me and my partner had heartburn 😫 Disappointed 😞 Can't fault teas - still great and good selection, including matcha. The same goes for cakes. So 👍for tea and cakes and 👎for food.

The food here is really special- fresh and delicious, and the portions are very generous. Vegan and gluten free options are available, and the staff are knowledgeable about any dietary restrictions you might have. The cakes are amazing too, and the tea selection is lovely. Add in the gorgeous decor and lovely setting, and this is one of the best places to eat in York!

Has a little garden as well. Staffs are generally warm and friendly. One of the senior members (or might be the owner) was a bit stern and cold tho. The price is slightly on the higher side. But reasonable considering the food quality. Huge shout out to their new matcha tofu cake.

Really amazing food, best quality matcha I’ve had in the country! When the food came out it seemed too little for what I paid for, but it was in fact so hearty and filling and the flavours were perfectly balanced! Same goes to the pickle and veg sides. Didn’t feel sick or too horrendously full after, felt right. I appreciated the sesame oil and 7-spice seasoning on the side as well. All round a great experience, would go again!

Came here to try the vegan options and it did not disappoint! Delicious food, friendly staff, fast service, and a nice, quiet vibe. Great to have so many creative vegan options that are clearly labelled on the menu. It is quite expensive (we spent £70 on lunch for two) so we'll save it for special occasions, but we'll definitely be back. You do need to call to make a booking in advance, even for lunch, as it's always full up.

What an absolute gem. Authentic Japanese Cafe. We basically stayed next door to this lovely little place. An extensive range of high quality green teas available to purchase here. The staff has a great depth of knowledge about each one which was really helpful for someone like me, who is a novice green tea drinker. There is plenty of indoor seating and they also have lovely garden seating in the back if you prefer a zen outdoor meal in the summer. We tried the trio of onigiri (rice ball with filling) set which was smoked salmon, tuna and if i remember correctly pickled plum onigiri and then some miso soup. The onigiri was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked rice with a generous amount of filling, you could tell they were high quality ingredients. The miso soup was packed full of flavour and has a deep umami flavour. I also tried their Yuzu cheesecake (forgot to take a pic! 🤦🏽‍♀️) as you know i’m a sucker for a dessert - I have to say, yuzu trumps any lemon cheesecake ever. Was perfectly balanced in flavour and texture, super creamy and delish. They had so many other lovely desserts to choose too. I’m sad i didn’t take more pictures to be honest! Lovely little Japanese goodies at the front and super friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.

Great matcha latte!🍵🍵🍵 Shame they didn't have any space for us to eat lunch as it was a saturday and the place was fully booked! Therefore, early reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment. Staff members were super friendly👍🏻 I ended up getting the two onigiri+miso soup set for take away. Maybe it was because I ate it after the food cooled down, but it felt like the onigiri were missing something. Chicken teriyaki mayo was good but I think the tuna mayo one would have been better with more topping and salt.

I came to this restaurant following its great reviews and seemly unique menu options. However, I was met very slow service, a rude staff member and disappointing food. Rice was incredibly watery and completely unseasoned. Beef was also bland and very little veg in the meal despite the menu's description. Staff member was also condescending and generally slow service. Please if you are looking for authentic Asian food please avoid this place as it is overpriced and underwhelming. Despite all this I will say the pickled beetroot was lovely, serving staff were great and the interior was very well picked. I think this restaurant has so much potential but they really need to update their food standards. To sum it up I paid over £30 for wet rice and dry beef, may as well go wagas.

Very cute and good Japanese cafe! We ordered a Japanese green tea, a matcha latte and a slice of yuzu cheesecake (£13.70 in total, wow). They made everything super well and we highly recommend the yuzu cheesecake, it’s very refreshing, was definitely a surprise!

I think this is the most authentic and delicious Japanese food i've had outside of Japan. I love this place and everyone who works there are really friendly and helpful.

What an amazing find! The food and teas are absolutely to die for and the staff are so lovely and knowledgeable. I recommend this place to anyone visiting York, although due to it's small size it might be difficult to get a seat at busy times. I think that's just an indication of how fabulous it is though!

Anybody with tastebuds needs to go here!! Both the food and the drink options are to die for. The matcha white chocolate drink is so tasty and high quality. The food was so well done, tasty and filling. Would happily come here again and again. My only recommendation would be to book in advance - there are not many spaces and they fill up very quickly !!!!!

We drive a long way to visit here. It's worth it. The food is amazing and delicious. You might need to wait for a table. We will be back. In the busy York shopping area, it's a calm oasis to chill.
