Had lunch here with my Japanophile teenage son who rated the food "the best Japanese food he's had in the UK". It was great though, very simple, traditional, but full of flavour. The service was nice, attentive without being overbearing but with a smile and a laugh, and our plates food were demolished in no time. A good sign was the number of Japanese customers dining, which to me is a real indication of the quality and authenticity of the food. Definitely will be paying Shiitakeya another visit next time in York.

My son ordered udon which is quite good. Tongkatsu is delicious, pork is tender and the crust is crispy. Soy sauce Soup base is quite good. Ramen consists of taste of alkaline water, but overall not very bad.

Fried chicken udon is delicious, the udon is smooth and the chicken is tender

I'm Japanese and sure here is the best Japanese restaurant in York.　　Staff is so nice and kind. I recommend Karaage, Chicken Katsu, Ton katsu and Udon.

Good food but not truly authentic Japanese food. The food was also a bit on the pricier side and the food service was a bit slow, but the overall experience was good.

Everything in here is perfect. Today is my birthday, I had requested my parents to bring me here, because the food in here is the best in Yorkshire.

Great, Authentic Japanese Food, Great service and warm staff. I've been dining here for 5+ years and still loving it! I recommend the Tori Karrage (Japanese Fried Chicken), Steak set (served with rice, miso soup and salad), Unagi Don, Beef Udon and Oyako Don!

We had an amazing meal , customer service was top notch and the quiet atmosphere was just what we needed after a long day of traveling.

We enjoyed a lunch here, with some familiar and some interesting Japanese options. There wasn't really anyone else in, so can't say it was particularly atmospheric, but the service was friendly.

Fabulous meal! Gyozas were delicious, both the rice and udon noodle dishes were great. The staff were so kind and helpful, it is cash only and we didn’t have any! So she allowed us to get cash and return afterwards.

Very kind, welcoming and attentive service. The food was delicious, tasty and warm - specially the ramen and teriyaki chicken. The bad thing was that only cash is accepted. [New update, after coming….multiple times already] the food is marvellous and service exceptional still. They have changed the place, making it bigger. I’m obsessed with this place. Everything is delicious - we tried the last time a sort of poached egg as a side: so creamy!!!

Amazing ramen, really quick and attentive service, the lovely lady behind the till was super quick to offer drinks, tissues anything we need. The ramen came out fairly quickly and was delicious and even had two bonus gyoza. Cute homely feel, would go again in a heartbeat.

One of, if not the best, ramen restaurant I've eaten at. Food was delicious and service was incredibly accommodating. It was quiet when we entered. We both ordered each variation of the chicken tonkatsu and we were pleasently surprised to see the breaded chicken and gyozas, in their own dishes, separate from the broth. The server automatically refill our water when our glasses were empty. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting York and fancying ramen and a cosy experience!

Really enjoyed our lunch here yesterday, very scrumptious! Would defo recommend people craving for hot Japanese food, you won’t be disappointed. I ordered a katsu don, my partner had the Oyako don, our friends ordered a sliced ribeye udon and Onsen tamago chicken curry udon.

Small but lovely japanese restaurant just out of the centre. Nice friendly staff. We had the chicken and beef sizzlers with rice, very nice indeed.

Went to Shiitakeya with my husband and both the service and food was amazing. I had the chicken yaki upon and it was, hands down, the best chicken I've had. My husband had the ribeye udon ramen and it he said he'd only had better in Japan. Definitely worth a visit!

Great food and great service at a reasonable price. A toilet would be nice but doesn't seem to matter because the food comes quickly Cash only so pop along to one stop before you eat (other cash machines are available )

Friendly staff! Great service! But unfortunately, the food is not authentic Japanese. Except for the restaurant name ‘しいたけ’, everything else is in Chinese. I don’t recommend the ramen. Perhaps it is from a store brought noodle pack? 🥲 I know because I lived in Japan for years

Such a foodie gem in York with the most delicious meals! An intimate place to eat with only a few tables, the broth and miso soup was so delicious (along with the mains!) if you’re craving Japanese food, here is the place to go!

My and my sister ordered online takeaway, I ordered the katsudon and she ordered chicken gyoza ramen, we left 10 minutes early to collect it and it was done at exactly the time the website said it would be they were definitely punctual. The food was securely packaged up and was absolutely top notch! I dislike big bits of onion in food but the katsudon was so good I ate it all anyway, the gyoza were some of the best we've ever had and the ramen broth was flavourful and hearty, with the addition of all the extras (salad and miso) it was by far the best Japanese food I've ever had and I will definitely go back if I have the chance!

As a family owned restaurant it’s no surprise that the food is fresh and delicious, and as far as I can tell authentic! It’s not exactly cheap but the food is well worth what I paid. Drinks are overpriced. But all round a great meal out, excellent service and kindness throughout.

Very small like a secret jewel, Beef bowl is tender and perfectly cooked. Soup is seasoned as all you just take it no extra things needed. I recommend it a lot have been very fancy restaurants and they will love to have such well made beef.

The food here is to die for (that's an expression; I hope you don't literally die to get some food here). The food is authentic Japanese, and the service is fantastic.

Just visited this little place and it was my first time trying Gyu Don, i tell you it was lovely! The service was phenomenal too, the lady gave me water as soon as I sat down and refilled my glass when it was empty. It’s a nice little place so it was very quiet, and i loved that kind of atmosphere! Will definitely come back again to try their other items

Cosy atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing food. Had a tamago don set and Osaka mixed juice, recommend both. Not too many places to sit so best to check if it's not busy in advance, reserve a table or take away

Tried stir fried Yakisoba. The place is a tiny Japanese hut which do not give you the feeling of great ambiance but the yakusoba just blew our mind. A must try tiny hut in the area.

Not very authentic Japanese food - no mirin, no dashi, no soy sauce. Food was not flavourful and meat was tough. But priced premium.

We went on the recommendation from a York resident, and had some absolutely wonderful food. The ribeye don was particularly good. The place is small, but good value for money, just remember to bring cash. Nearest cadh point is about 500m away

Really lovely and authentic japanese food! Reasonably priced, good quality and portion size. The tonkastu don and sliced sirloin ramen was really tasty. A smaller restaurant but very quaint and cozy. Would definitely recommend :)

I like Japanese/Asian food. Is not so many good places in York with this kind of cousine. I used to go regulary in different place but quality there so much go down and I stoped enjoying there so we were looking for with my partner different place to eat. We visited Shiitakeya today I odered Chicken Teriyaki Ramen. Food was beautiful. I have never been eating such rich and essencial broth/stock in York, noodles were great too. I strongly recomend it.

The best Japanese food in York. You'd be a fool not to try this place out! I spent 30 years in Japan with my wife and now she has left me. This is all I have to remind me of her.

Simple yummy food, definitely would revisit. Homie atmosphere with Japanese music playing in background. It’s cash only, but when I asked, the owner said I can also make payment online on the website. Ordered yaki niku don, and oolong tea (I like that they didn’t add sugar to it). shop is ran by a cute Cantonese owner, seemed like she had some regulars came the time I visited.

Disappointing. Definitely not authentic, food was tasty enough but more Chinese Japanese than Japanese. Pretty expensive for what it was, portions are really small - my meal came with the smallest rice. Only went because of the reviews... Ugh. Also it's cash only, in this day and age.

Tried stirred fried udon and takoyaki (章魚燒) which are very remarkable and delicious. They were made from ingredients imported from Japan and by an experienced chief who worked years in Japanese restaurants. Highly recommend whoever love Japanese cuisines to give it a try!! Btw 係香港人開架🥹

A quaint little family run restaurant bringing the closest thing to authentic Japanese mains to york. Highly reccomend.

An absolute pleasure to eat here, the food was simply amazing, and the lady serving us couldn’t have been more helpful! This has definitely been the highlight of our trip! If you’re in York you have to eat here, or you’re seriously missing out!

First time trying Shiitakeya 🍄 A small family run restaurant. Very authentic Japanese taste. The chef made its own teriyaki sauce and ingredients are specifically picked. Highly recommended! Since the restaurant is only run by a couple, they are quite busy and may not have much time to provide very good service though the couple are really nice and friendly.

Authentic Japanese food. It's not the most salubrious of eateries - more like a cafe than a restaurant - but the food is worth the surroundings.

A Japanese restaurant runs by Hong Kong people. The owner is very friendly and pets are welcome. The pork chops are very tasty, and the curry sauce has a Japanese taste.

Upon entering this restaurant, you might be a bit skeptical due to its small size and lack of tables. But all of our worries were quickly put to the side when we ordered our food. The service was very speedy and we got our drinks...

Really disappointing and unprofessional. Drive 45 minutes to find yourself in front of a closed restaurant. However, we had booked in advance and the date did not pose a problem. We weren't even warned. I had to look for a restaurant last minute to celebrate my birthday. Too bad we can't give less than one star.
