I have spent in this restaurant a couple of hours at lunch time, it was a very nice and relaxing break as the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, the food is very high quality and definitively not overpriced at all, we had plenty of excellent sushi with generous chunks of fresh fish, soup, tempura, noodles, all for less than 20£ each. The staff was super kind and welcoming.

We had the octopus to start and shared a sushi platter, food was super quick to arrive and delicious and served by friendly staff. We will be back to try more of the menu.

Visited this restaurant on the first day of the Eat out to Help out campaign. I think the restaurant was a little surprised at the demand and the speed of the service was perhaps not as they would want it to be, however the friendliness of the staff more than made up or it. The food was excellent in all aspects, of particular note were the salt and pepper spare ribs. It should be noted that the restaurant has recently changed name to IPFU Sushi

We went for a lunch with family, the waitress was very rude and she didn't know the menu. The food was great very tasty. We are a bit disappointed for the service because this is one of our favourite restaurants.

I would highly recommend this restaurant. We went for a mix of sushi, sashimi and some tasty grilled dishes. Good service, clean and delicious food.

The restaurant offers other Japanese dishes in addition to an extensive sushi menu. The sushi (as with a lot of sushi places in the UK) is a bit pricy but it was nice for a treat. The fish was fresh and love had clearly gone into the food. Just in case the internet has confused you on your search for this restaurant, it has recently changed it's name to Ippuku.

Me and my partner visited York this weekend and decided to end our Saturday night with some sushi. We’d spotted this place after parking in the NCP across the road so thought we’d give it a go. We didn’t book but at the time we arrived it wasn’t a problem (around 5pm) but as we were finishing our meal the place was becoming very busy. As a vegetarian there was plenty of choice for me - I had the vegetable spring rolls, avocado/asparagus hand roll and the vegetable tempura bento box. My partner got the ribs and then the large bento box no.8. Food was fresh and flavoursome and the staff were so nice. I’d definitely recommend a visit.

We regularly come here for Sushi it's amazing! Staff is very friendly. Excellent Chef. Very professional management. Cozy atmosphere. This is the place to eat and relax.

My son and I went to this restaurant following a visit to the theatre which is not too far away. I am a wheelchair user, and my son is vegatarian so we had specific needs which the restaurant met. Neither of us had eaten Japanese before so we were quite curious as to what it would be like. My son had a veggie roll for starters, followed by Udon noodle soup. There was so much left of that he was able to take what was left home for a meal the following day. He said it was absolutely delicious. My starter was a salmon and avocado roll, followed by a hamata hotate roll both of which were absolutely delicious. The only negative thing I would say is that there was a green piped flower on the serving platter which I thought was made from avocade mousse but was was in fact VERY hot wasabe. Be warned!! To drink we both had plum wine which was gorgeous - really soft and velvety. I am going to see if I can buy some of it as I was so impressed. We would definitely recommend this restaurant if you want to try something different.

Visited for lunch with my daughter. I haven’t been to a sushi restaurant before so I was nervous ordering the food. The menu is easy to understand and the waitress was lovely. The restaurant is lovely with background music so it’s not too quiet. We had a sushi platter with an additional 12 pcs of the cucumber and avocado sushi with a bubble tea and a Diet Coke - £26 which I thought was excellent value for money. We were very full. Would definitely visit again.

Mediocre meal, beef bento box beef was ok but ,goyza awful as was the miso, ordered a side order of ribs got them after I finished my meal as they went to the table beside us... no apology. The only reason I’m giving 2 stars is because my wife & daughter enjoyed their meal. The staff and service weren’t great, to finish off we couldn’t pay by card because apparently the machine was down

The delivery was a bit late (20minutes) but I don't mind that. The thing I do care about is hygiene! I found a disgusting long black hair in my sushi Unaqi Umaraki Roll. It was literally IN the sushi... I had no appetite anymore. Will not order anything from here again

This was a nice sushi restaurant near the city centre. Friendly service and good food. The highlight was the king prawn dragon roll and hot sake. No reservation required.

Ordered some sushi and Bento boxes for delivery. Arrived late. Sushi nothing special. Bento boxes cold and stodgy. Save yourself a fortune and get better sushi from M&S instead

The whole ambiance is encouraging with greeters in kimono and a spacious layout of tables. I ate both lunch & dinner here recently (Oct 2019). Lunch is very good value for a bento box at £10. Dinner is pricier, similar to London prices for set sashimi, maki and sake.. About five minutes walk from the railway station in a street of oriental restaurants. Good place to entertain guests.

We went for dinner here and it was lovely! We always look for a good local sushi place when we’re away from home and today we found this one. It did not disappoint. The food was delicious and the staff were very pleasant and cheerful. Would definitely recommend this place to others - we have had a lot of sushi and this place was really great!

We have visited here before and were impressed last time. The menu is very comprehensive so takes time to read through. We opted for a variety of sushi nigiri and a bento box. These are large and the flavours excellent. Service was also excellent. This came to £30 per head. Without the sushi you would be looking to closer to £20-22 per head

Make sure you get the Tuna and Salmon Belly, flamed!!! It is quite simply to die for!!!!I love the menu here, I've been able to try bullfrog - gorgeous, and a whole array of authentic dishes that you just don't get in any of the high street chains.Totally love it

I've never really been a fan of Japanese food, after being very disappointed with the fast food type Sushi chains you see all over. But after visiting Sushi Waka in York on Sunday, Bank holiday weekend, our experience was so good that we returned on the Monday for more. The sushi was incredibly fresh and tasty, and prepared by a master sushi chef in the middle of the room. We ordered 7 or 8 dishes to share and they came as they were prepared. They were large, tasty and very fresh. This is far more than just a Sushi restaurant though, and in a separate kitchen are more chefs serving up hot dishes, which are as tasty as any dishes I have ever had. I wished we lived in York. We would be there so often. The ambience was perfect and the decor is fabulous. We even pointed out to the owner that he had undercharged us for some drinks, but he said it was on him. Its little touches like this, that separate that great from the good. 5 star service in a 5 star restaurant.

What a great range of food! We had bento boxes which the pictures on the menu do no justice to. The table next to us gave us food envy when we saw the sushi they had ordered, looked spectacular!! Well worth a visit

Staff all wore cute authentic Japanese dresses. Food was delicious. Had a bento box and there was loads! Sushi was tasty and the teriyaki salmon was beautiful.

Please don’t waste your money on this place , I ordered a takeaway that had king prawns in it I could not believe they would send it out with the tail end of ONE king prawn the rest was veg !! It was Luke warm not fresh at all , in fact I’m feeling quite ill . When I rang them just to ask how they had the cheek to send this order out the man on the end of the phone laughed and replied oh dear , I just wanted a sorry but No if they find this funny I hope they go bust . It was disgusting

Went to sushiwaka with friends for a meal great customer service from friendly staff, the food where to die for I had the chicken ramen and my friends had sushi and gyudon we all enjoyed. Will be visiting to restaurant again highly recommended

I really like this place-friendly staff and quick service. I always have sushi there and it never disappoints me- quick service and fresh good quality food. Will be back again today.Highly recommended

This had mixed reviews especially with regard to service and some comments about the staff.However, we found the food to be excellent and thought it was a positive sign that the staff were Japanese and equally, that there were a number of oriental customers.We loved it so much we went back for a second visit during our stay in York.

Some minor setbacks in today's dinner, but overall was happy with the quality of food/ingredients, considering the lack of authentic Asian options in this area (since Chinese/Japanese restaurants in the UK tend to be generic, overpriced and westernised). The maki rolls are great, classic style, and the prawn curry rice was good. Also ordered the vegetable stir fried udon with curry sauce, which was generous with the vegetables and very tasty. The one low point was that the grilled mackerel nigiri was not at all what we expected - it was a strange interpretation. Not sure if it's because the chef was not familiar with how it should be traditionally...? Other items were OK.Service was a little slow, possibly because it was a busy day and the staff are quite young, but were friendly and helpful once you get their attention.

I'll start by saying that the place looks beautiful inside, the atmosphere is great and the Japanese feel is there. Even the tables are set amazingly.It was a pretty quiet night, so our order was taken quickly (although, the menu is so big and there's so many wonderful things it's difficult to choose). We started with a special sushi set and it was probably one of the best ones I've eaten and it alone made me want to go back to that restaurant to try out some other choices. We also had a few starters and mains and they were just wonderful. The staff were lovely and polite (and the female staff looked beautiful in their uniforms).I'm definitely coming to this place again.

Never been more impressed by a restaurant in my life. The staff are very kind and friendly and the sushi is amazing. Good quality food and ingredients and the taste is incredible. Will definitely need to come again :)

I’m not sure why this place gets a lot of bad reviews; we visited by chance and hadn’t checked the rating until we were sat down waiting to order, but the experience we had was brilliant!The staff are attentive but clearly English is not their first language so they naturally aren’t as chatty, but they were far from rude. The food was superb! We eat Japanese food a lot, all over, and this is possibly the best we have had. The only criticism would be that one of the starters didn’t arrive until after the main course but in all honesty it wasn’t an issue as we were sharing starters anyway. I will absolutely come back here next time I’m travelling up that way!

We came here for lunch, the place was almost empty and we had two lunch boxes. We got the food very quickly and it was very good and also very affordable. Staff was very nice.

Τα boxes είχαν μια πικρή ποικιλία το καθένα, ανάλογη με το κρέας αναφοράς, μοσχάρι, χοιρινό ή κοτόπουλο. Μαζί με αυτά παραγγείλαμε spring rolls, king prawns και sizzling pork. Καλομαγειρεμένα όλα, σε ικανοποιητικές μερίδες και σε προσιτές τιμές. Πολύ ευγενικό και εξυπηρετικό το προσωπικό με παραδοσιακές φορεσιές. Αν και τυχαία, αποδείχτηκε καλή επιλογή τελικά.

We were 4P, wanted to try this Japanese restaurant. We were very quickly seated and the restaurant wasn't busy.As appetizers, we ordered a mixture of different sushi, and it was kind of okay. But we were unhappy with main courses we ordered. My seafood hot pot soup was so salty that I ate only few spoons. Poor presentation and my husband's Rice bowl with beef topping arrived already cooled. No waitress come by to ask if everything is okay, or if we need anything else. They were not in the hall, we had to look for them to ask for the bill. Service was bad.

Would not recommend food arrived late and warm, I then contacted ‘Sushi Waka’ explaining I was not happy and god ignored! Rude!

The New Manager is very Rude not only to customers but also Delivery staff, Shouting at staff is not on when you come for a peaceful Meal. You need to learn respect. Tone down your voice its scary to kids as well as adults. You also need to have a sense of urgency waiting for 40 minutes to get your order is disgusting

We went in today, we left all our food and we still had to pay £39. The rice wasn’t nice and it was so expensive. It costs far too much money for what you order. Never returning again. Waste of money and time.

We ate here on a busy Saturday night and it did take a while for our order to be taken, it was as well as the menu was so varied and long it took us ages to choose. My husband and I shared sushi starters which were delicious and my husband loved his portion of squid. I had tempura prawns and vegetables in udon noodles and this was a massive portion with perfectly cooked vegetables. My husband had steak in a teriaki type sauce with rice and said it was the most tender he'd eaten in a while. I loved the place, don't expect speedy service but the food is worth the wait.

So I would first like to express my complete disappointment with the management here in this restaurant. With a chain so high in regard I believe that some training is needed for the manager or just some basic understanding of how customer service works.... i am a manager at a resturant that is in the top 20 of trip advisor. so obvously i know what i would expect from my team.Last week myself and my partner, went to get some lunch and my girlfriend really wanted to try the sushi at your place, it was a wet and cold day , your resturant was not busy and all i got was a hi from the bar maid. we proceded to wait at the front of the resturant, before we finally gave in and went to seat ourselves down untill someone came to see us. On the way to the seat, what i belive to be the manager, ( as he was in a shirt and carrying food), told us we could not seat ourselves and we were to go back to the front and wait there to be seated, please bear in mind that there was a total of 4 tables in use at this time. embaressed and very frustrated with the way i was spoken to i left and told my partner thar we will never go back there again. we proceded to go to prezzo and spend 85 pouns for lunch, your managers loss.due to this i would only rate this 1 star however my partner begged me to give this place another try.... reluctantly i agreed to go back to see exactly how this chain works on a busy day. so we went out saturday evening to give it another go... i belive my server that night was a young boyhe is the reason i have wrote this review... however he does not not about my previous experience, any way that night he excelled in his work ethic, he was very busy, yet maintained a full professional approach, and kind abilty to work well under pressure was very well spotted by myself, even i would employ this boy to work for my team. he is the reason i would go back on a weekend. but i stress this only because of the servers... as the meangement still in not good at all... as a memeber of the manaement team, came to take the dessert order, and then i had to ask the ima, were was our desserts and he was un awear as by the looks of it he had forgot to put our order though.... my advise the servers know more than the manager.the food was good and worth the 3 stars i award 5 stars to the server 1 star to management

This restaurant is highly recommended by our friends that serves authentic Japanese food in York. So I took my wife and our kids to the restaurant and hoped to gave them a good experience for their first time. We walked in and were led by a very handsome waitress to a table. There were only a few tables occupied during the time and the order was taken very soon. I had to admit that the food was delicious and is very reasonably priced. However, I had something to say about the service because my son's salmon teriyaki bento seemed to be forgotten while we asked the waitress. Finally, my son got his cold and hard food after we finished our own dish which was unforgivable. When we received the receipt, we saw the bill of my son's teriyaki salmon was still included which is unreasonable. We talked to a female waitress and asked for a statement (refund or discount). But when the waitress entered in a discussion with a male member of staff in a white T-shirt, I clearly heart he said "we never compromise......" in Chinese. Well..... A rude staff who doesn't know I can understand Chinese a little bit. Although they gave us a discount in the end, we experienced a very unpleasant service and the male staff must change his attitude and manner. Never come back again!

This place was very highly recommended on Google and close to our hotel. We walked in and were told by a very polite waitress that there are no tables but we could wait so we decided to do so. A moment later a rude male member of staff (owner/manager?) who looked beyond stressed and not able to handle any pressure told us in no uncertain terms that there are "NO TABLE". The waitress entered in a discussion with him and eventually we were told that it will be "maybe 30 minutes probably longer". We decided to wait. In the 30 minutes we waited, 5 tables freed up and no one was coming in. Eventually we were seated. It took very long time for our order to be taken and even longer for it to arrive. We started eating 1h 20 minutes after we walked into the restaurant. The sushi was fantastic and my chicken teriyaki don was brilliant. My husbands sweet and sour noodles were severely undercooked and hard. His "chicken fillet" was made of unrecognisable parts of chicken, fat and grisly. That dish was not edible so i just shared mine with him as we did not want to face the prospect of waiting another 45 for the redo of the dish. What a shame about this place. The guy who was "welcoming" the guests on 18/01/19 in the evening needs to change profession, we experienced it ourselves and saw a number of guests being very upset by his unpleasant manner.

This restaurant may have had some difficulties when it first opened, but I can assure you that Sushi Waka now offers great experience. The food was delicious and is very reasonably priced! The restaurant itself is beautiful and provides a nice atmosphere. The staff were friendly and professional. We are so glad that there is now a good sushi restaurant in York! We will be back!

We'd been to the one in Leeds, so the reputation preceded them. Staff were very attentive and the food was very tasty and filling; we ended up ordering more because it was so good! If we're in York again we'll be back.

Loved the food tonight ate as a table of 5 we revived great service and the dishes were great we kept asking for more we only wish we had room for more will be back soon !

We came in a group of 4 including my husband and 2 friends. My husband arrived first, asking for a table for 4 so he could start ordering some food while waiting for the rest of us as we're all very hungry, and he was cold told by the server they would not seat him to a table until all 4 people show up. It was Tuesday night, the restaurant was almost empty. We arrived 10 minutes later and then were seated to a table. Menu is professionally designed with eye catching photos of food. We ordered a starter, a sharing plater and a bento box to share. Only got the starter and the bento served. Until we finished the food and asked if the sharing plater was ready and was told the server forgot to put the order through and then they started to make the dish. The food was well presented as we would expect from a Japanese restaurant. We were a little worried about the food quality as we waited for the order, we noticed the sushi chef didn't change his gloves while touching different raw fish on the sushi bar and this may cause cross contamination between the fish and cause the raw fish gone off quicker than usual. And we were right. The sushi taste no fresh at all! All fish and seafood were soft and lost all the fresh texture. The shrimps were smelly and the squid tased like it's been out of date for days. After eating, the whole group got food poisoned straight away. We all diagnosed diarrhea and felt like vomiting for the rest of the night. Alcohol drink was also served irresponsibly to one of the friends. She had 4 beers and reached the recommended limit, she was clearly drunk but the server kept up selling more beers to her. We had to tell our friend to stop ordering more drink as she's already drunk. After all, horrible service, low quality food, will never come back.

Overall are the signatur dishes of a good quality but I just didn‘t like the service. I had to decline two times to take another beer (despite that I had already had a glass of white wine on the side). Once the last piece of the sushi was eaten (stilll chewing on it) all plates were immediately taken away. So, decent food but the atmosphere was rather spoilt.

As the title suggests I couldn't comment on the authenticity of the food, however we went twice today as far too many places seemed below par in the shambles, it's a little way out but we found the service and food to be great! We didn't just have sushi but the dragon roll was awesome, it's my girlfriends favourite so we tend to go for sushi atleast once whatever country we happen to be in, anywho I found the place to serve decent food at a very affordable price with great service, thanks guys!

Been here a couple times and has been great both times. Very authentic, lovely staff, even some interesting sushi rolls to choose from, my sister being a big fan of the mango crab rolls.

If you’re looking for authentic Japanese, keep searching. We had a table of six booking for a birthday celebration. Totally surly staff, who it felt like you were irritating by your very presence. We have been to Japan four times, and the menu was wholly overwhelming and a mixture of Japanese and Chinese. Given that the wait staff angrily barked Chinese at each other, I can see where the Chinese influence is from. We ordered a variety, from sashimi to curry katsu, including starters. The wait staff misunderstood a starter as a main, and when told of this politely stood there holding the dish sceptically like we were the cause of the problem. Then, after he begrudgingly took it away, all starters and mains arrived at the same time, ending in utter chaos. Everything was over cooked to oblivion and utterly tasteless. If you want Japanese food cooked with even a semblance of taste, I would strongly suggest Yo Sushi. At least the staff wouldn’t make you feel like you’re interrupting them, and the food might taste of something other than the crushing of dreams.

Have eaten here several times. The service is always very friendly. The rolls are very large and generous. I've really enjoyed some of the specialty rolls such as the Hotate roll. Very quick once you order. Prices are great compared to the chain restaurants, especially when you consider portion size.

The staff, food and ambience was great.The service is friendly but not invasive I.e. waiters didn’t come over every few minutes asking “how’s everything?” The presentation of the food was wonderful and so tasty.I will be going again and would recommend the Bento boxes.

I have eaten in Sushi Waka Leeds and spotted this restaurant on a recent trip to York. I decided to pick up a take away on my way home for my son and I. It didn’t disappoint. Well worth a visit for the sushi lovers.

Me and husband went out for a meal. We decided to try this place as we haven’t been and wanted japanese. We was soo hungry so looking forward to it. It wasnt too busy. Maybe 7 tables. We went in and was seated straight away. We had look through the huge menu and chose very quickly what we wanted. We was waiting and waiting and waiting to place our order and drinks. The waitor came to take our order when we waved to him after 30 mins. He took our order and we waited and waited after another 20 mins for our drinks. We had to ask him again and he thought we already were given our drinks!! After we got our drinks there was a really long wait for the food. At this point i was really tempted just to go next door to the indian. As this service was extrememly poor. Also they have a huge tv screen and it was showing sea food being caught from the sea and how they kill them to cook them. This made me lose my appetite. It was the last thing i wanted to see: loads of fish with blood and their eyeballs everywhere!! When the food eventually came it didnt taste nice. It wasn’t hot. It was luke warm. And i couldnt eat it. I will not be recommending this place to anyone.

I just travelled from Bristol to York, done a day in the office and was starving. A friend told me about ordering through Deliveroo rather than the room service at the cheap hotel we have to stay in.So chuffed. Arrived so quickly and was lush, I debated getting a Yo but glad I didn't bother. Loved the fresh sashimi bento box and yakatori chicken skewers (said I was starving, hence no pic of those). Would absolutely have this again

We visit very often and find the service friendly and the sushi very high quality. The staff are always accommodating to our young son. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting York.

We ordered the £35 SASHIMI PLATTER thinking we were going to get a lot of sashimi as shown in the photo in the menu. When it came it looked entirely different, a huge ceramic plate full of nabo and ice craftily arranged to give you appearance of abundance. In reality the fish selection apart from the salmon was really just thin slivers of the various types of fish lost in all the rubbish. The prawns were a watery joke. The whole lot of sashimi wouldn’t occupy a small side plate. The bottom line is that we were cleverly cheated

This restaurant feels more like a Japanese restaurant than most others we have been to in the UK. Fhe food has an authentic feel and is good value. Bento boxes could probably feed two and each time we have been there we have ordered too much. Service is friendly and attentive but unlike UK restaurants the food will arrive when it is ready (a bit like wagamama). I would recomemnd this as a place to go if you want a more aithentic Japanese meal.

I've been here 3 times since it opened desperately hoping for a decent Sushi/Japanese restaurant in York. Twice the service has been shocking. This time so was the food.We popped in on a Sunday for a late lunch and opted for one of the bento meals. After waiting for an age to place our order while the waitress seemed to be doing very little apart from having an argument with someone in the back who was suggesting they serve us. My wife and I eventually both ordered the Chicken Teriyaki bento which came with the worst quality chicken I've ever had in a restaurant. Lumps of just chicken skin, fat. The sauce was horrendous. Like the first time, we visited they didn't bring us the drinks we ordered until we asked again and the bento was missing the fruit it mentioned that came with it. The food was so bad we got up and left. Disappointed that they are still so disorganised but more disappointed the food is so bad. Won't be going back a 4th time! I'd also say the waitress struggled to communicate with us in English.(For the sake of transparency the 2nd time we went it was quiet and the food and service was also good)

I went into this sushi place with no high expectations; being an Asian that is just visiting a very English place.To put things into context, the day before I went to Sushi Yo! and here at Waka I was expecting a rather 'westernized' version of the sushi and rolls too, but to my pleasant surprise, the food tasted like a real Japanese chef made it! And, it was indeed made by Japanese chefs! I tried one of the rolls and I loved it. Except they didn't use the kind of fish mentioned in the menu description (salmon was replaced with milkfish, which may be cheaper - but the fish was fresh and tasted great with the roll so I let that slide. Did they think I would not realize it was a different kind of fish? Or the chef made a mistake? I'll never know).The wasabi was fresh and strong too, which I like. The quality of wasabi is my benchmark of a good sushi restaurant.If I wasn't just visiting, I would definitely come again.

My partner and I had three types of rolls as well as tempora vegetables. Absolutley delicious and fantastic customer service ...highly recommend

Went to sushi waka for my birthday and it was amazing! If you like sushi you will love this place and it’s ridiculously cheap for the quality of food you get! Amazing!

I have been a quite few times and always never disappoints. Quality ingredients and skilled staff turn out some stunning dishes that are well presented and taste fantastic.

I gave Sushi Waka three chances because I wanted to support a Japanese restaurant in York. But whether I've been in on a weekday or weekend the service is always unacceptably slow.Today I was in a group of five and it took us about two hours to get all our food. Mine came quickly, but one girl still hadn't received *anything* 1:30hrs+ after ordering. They said the kitchen was busy, but a couple on a different table came in after us, ordered, ate and left in that time. So it's simply bad management. When the last dish finally did arrive it wasn't even what we'd ordered.They offered us some discount to make up for it, and some discount off our next visit. But we won't be going for a fourth time to use it. Other than that, the food is actually ok.

I try to get lunch with my wife...We ordered bento package with sushi and sashimi. We thought that we will spend a lot of money but I will just say what we spent is worth it...

When I entered the restaurant, a staff said "Irasshaimase" which means "welcome" in Japanese. So I thought they were Japanese at first, but the menu was written in English and Chinese and no Japanese there. Still their service was very amazing. Food was also nice! I enjoyed a fresh raw fish donburi with my lovely friend.

I was amazed by the very well-decorated sashimi platter. They looked so fancy and fresh as well. The food are mainly good, like the sushi and bento, they have a good deal for lunch as well. But I don’t really like the ramen, not really thick in the taste, smells and tastes like a Vietnamese Pho instead.

We couldn’t fault these guys , the service , food and whole atmosphere was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ! It was our anniversary and we were incredibly looked after . The experience we will never forget . Will highly recommend to our friends and family. 5 *****

Nicely presented restaurant with plenty of seating and some cool features. We ordered the bento box offer which is a bargain....but they make you wait for it. Not just us, everyone. The family sat next to us all had their meals at separate times, as did we.Food is excellent, but staff and wait is something they definitely need to work on. We have been four times now ever meal was excellent especially the sushi and side dishes. Last week we enjoyed Tepanjaki for the first time here chef Albert was very good and really entertaining with knife skills and food balancing...Friendly staff quick service.Well worth it!

Tucked away near the train station is this restaurant that could be easily missed. Atmosphere is relaxing with staff that are eager to take orders. It’s a big menu and I would appreciated more if staff were a bit more patient. Same goes for removing dishes as soon as they see you’ve stopped eating. Otherwise, great tasting food, with authentic presentation plates. Would love to return and sit at the open flame table where the chef prepares food live.

I’ve been missing japanese food so much before I came here. When I came this restaurant with some friends I was impressed!! Cause every food I ordered it was exactly japanese food that I know! I had mixed tempra, agedashi tofu, kabotya korokke, edamame, miso soup, sushi and dorayaki as a dessert でざーとwhich is salmon roe and japanese omelette. It was fantastic!!!! Like baking to Japan! After this I visited here many times! And I wanna try Teppanyaki next time!

I have been at Sushi Waka several times. They offer good variety of sushi with good quality ingredients. Apart from sushi you can enjoy other types of Japanese dishes such as tempura and ramen . I would genuinely recommend this restaurant if you get a Japanese craving moment.

I came here with my boyfriend for a meal and it was delicious! I know they've had a lot of changes recently with new management and new chefs and it is amazing! Gorgeous food, friendly staff and the restaurant was so clean! If you like sushi and Japanese food then this is the place to go!

I enjoyed a tasty, chicken teriyaki bento here for supper this week with colleagues who chose similar meals. The service was efficient and the restaurant was spacious. The bill was so reasonable that I'm wondering if it should count as cheap eats. Useful in the evening! I shall be back.

Inutile andare a sperimentare, specialmente a pranzo, locali appartenenti a grandi catene. Qui almeno si va sul sicuro spendendo poche sterline - nell'ordine di 10-11 - se ordinando uno dei loro bento box (il menu, comunque, è molto ricco). Have been to this restaurant quite a few times now, usually at the weekend in the evening. There can be a bit of a wait when it's super busy and the service isn't the best but the staff are friendly and helpful in general and I think it's just down to the fact that the food is freshly prepared to order so can take that bit longer than some other cuisines. Their drinks are on the expensive side so we just have the jasmine tea and go all-out on ordering food instead! The sushi dragons are great, the bento boxes are great and the various hot dishes we've had have also been great. Not going to lie, I feel a bit cheated that they don't do desserts as it's nice to have something sweet to finish when you go out for tea. The atmosphere is relaxed and I like that they have TV's in the background showing how the sushi etc is made and where they source their ingredients. Overall a winner!

The sushi itself was amazing, so fresh and flavourful, never experienced such beautiful food! The staff were so polite and charming, and exceptionally friendly. From the moment we walked in, the staff were attentive and really set a happy and peaceful atmosphere. They were patient while we took our time ordering and were happy to help in any way they could. The food was delicious, the sushi I cannot praise highly enough! Portion sizes were a lot bigger than your average sushi restaurant, well worth the price. (Just for reference I would say this is medium price range compared to over places). Once we'd finished, the gentleman waiter was lovely and easily to get along with, definitely put us at ease. When we were leaving, we were made to feel even more special and valued customers when the chef himself, bowed and thanked us for our custom. I cannot rave enough about this restaurant, it truly is an experience. 5 stars all the way.

We enjoyed very much our food for my wife's birthday treat. As someone who is crazy for anything Japanese she was very happy.

Went in to try something different and chose from the lunch menu. I believe the food might've been nice if it wasn't for the 40 minutes wait. Got the feeling the waitress forgot to give our ticket to the kitchen and had to wait.Nicely decorated, but nothing special.

Excellent will be back, got to try it to believe it. Delicious ramens', fish sushi platter, tempura sushi. Lots more to choose from. My daughter and son in law love Japanese food and says it was good as it was in Japan.

My family and I had a fabulous time at SushiWaka - Japanese food is our favourite and I can honestly say we were served some of the best Japanese food we've ever had outside Asia. Authentic and delicious, cooked to perfection. We were so impressed we went back the following week! Staff were friendly, service was quick and attentive, and again...food was AMAZING! One of York's best kept secrets in my opinion.

The service at this half empty restaurant was dire. Endless waits and misunderstood items brought and then served to the wrong people. The food when it arrived was fantastic, and you should have got 5 stars but the service let you down SO badly.

Coming to this place to try the food but it was so so durty that me and my friend have to leave. If they cant keep the place clean it make me feel how would the kitchen looks like. It was really quiet the staff was sat talking to each other and the place it was seriously durty. I will never coming in this place again. Dirty dirty dirty

The welcoming male staff was very unfriendly and forced everyone to sit exactly in the same front area near the window that can be seen from the people outside. We cannot choose where we want to sit. Obviously the whole restuarant was very empty except the front part that looked very crowded as they pushed everyone to sit in that same one area. It took ages until the food to be served. The food tray looked very dirty with food stain.

Having been to Japan and really into Japanese food I have to recommend Sushi Waka in York. This is our second time round and we have been very impressed on both occasions. Fully recommended are the Bento boxes but we will certainly explore more of the menu in future visits.

I've ordered takeaway 3 times from Sushi Waka now and it's always amazing. First couple from Deliveroo, which always seems to be slow, where ever you order from. Today I picked it up and it was quite a bit cheaper. It's great value! I can't comment on the service/atmosphere in the restaurant, but the food is fresh and really flavoursome. I highly recommend the Nasu Dengaku (glazed aubergine) and the tofu skin nigiri. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options.

Excellent food for a great price, I had three veggy starters and rice and my friend had crab roll and ramen. We struggled to eat it all there was so much. The aubergine dish deserves an honorable mention it was so good, never tasted anything like it! With three drinks it came to just over £35. I'm already thinking of people that I can take along. Why this place isn't packed out I don't know. It should be.

I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant as I've never been overly impressed with YoSushi and have been looking for an alternative. My husband and I really enjoy Japanese style food and thought we'd finally give this place a go. We went for a late lunch and the place was empty with exception for one other table. 3 members of waiting staff were on. One of the waiting staff came and took our drinks orders and then our food order. Everything was efficient up to this point. We ordered a starter and 2 mains. My husband main came out first. We are used to places like Wagamama where the food comes out when ready so it was not a big surprise that his food came out first though we were confused how it came out before the starter. About 10 minutes later my main came out which was not what I had ordered. It also came with miso soup which I wasn't provided a spoon for and there was still no sign of the starter I ordered. I asked if the starter was coming and she said she would go get it. I was starving and took a few bites out of my meal and then realised it wasn't what I ordered. We tried to get the attention of the waitress who was frantically looking at her till screen, we suspect that she knew that the order was wrong but instead of saying something just gave it to me. She then went to clear another table and I called her over and explained that the meal was wrong. I also asked again for a soup spoon. She took the meal away and said she would get it sorted. She came back and said that they were making me a new one. I sat there with my soup, still no spoon, and waited for both the starter and the main to arrive. Eventually the starter and the spoon arrived. My husband finished his meal and shortly after my meal finally arrived which was accompanied by a free side dish. We ate our meals and then joked lets time how long before they come and take our plates away. After 15 minutes my husband finally waved a server over (another table had come in at this point which means there was 3 servers and 2 tables) to clear the table and get us our bill. When presented with the bill they had given me 10% off. The food was lovely and we can't fault it. The problem was the service. No check back, no communication until I complained and we both left feeling like they new they had messed up and avoided us despite being the only table in the restaurant. I hate being the person on Tripadvisor reporting a bad experience and if the team had dealt with it differently I probably wouldn't be typing this right now. This could have been a far better experience if someone had been managing the team and the team were looking after the guests instead of standing on the bar socializing. Basically if you want good food but bad service go here but honestly there's enough restaurants in York that it is easy to find somewhere that can deliver good on both food and service.

Had a really excellent meal here, I normally go to yosushi, however the food here tastes much more authentic and fresh. The service was also very good and the staff were friendly.

Its good to have an alternative to Yo Sushi which, although decent enough, is not the sort of place anyone who likes good Japanese food goes to. I really wanted to try this place so I met a friend for lunch here.The menu is large and difficult to read, with dark red lettering on a black background - a nightmare for someone with poor eyesight like me. It is not clear which dishes are the one in the photos. And there are two types of bento, one type a lot more expensive than the other. It would have been good to know what was in the cheaper bento. My friend ordered a sushi selection which came out a good 10-15 mins before my bento box, which is odd as not only can sushi not go cold, but in the end she had nearly finished her meal before I got mine.However, the bento I ordered was absolutely delicious, and was large enough to have fed two people. I got sashimi, teriyaki, tempura prawns and veg, rice, salad, and miso soup, which I think is excellent value! the beer was nice, and the toilets so clean I have to make a point of mentioning them. Good job!So if they just keep an eye of their service, and maybe smile a bit more, this restaurant could be up there for a delicious meal in York.
