From the moment we walked through the door the bar staff made us feel really welcome … old - fashioned type hospitality. Great beer helped us settle in and food was tasty, well prepared and served. We loved the whitebait, salmon with balsamic/cherry toms and cheese board. After a long days walking it was a great place to spend a Saturday evening! Thank you.

Very much our Ploughmans lunch on Friday 24 May at just after 12 noon. We were exploring Alfriston and decided on this place for a pub lunch. Very atmospheric place and a very good barman who took our food orders and served us drinks. We decided to share a ploughmans with extra cheese and I had a half of Harveys ale and my wife a sparkling water. The food was very good and pleased that although the pub was popular no one was loud! I do recommend coming here!

Set in the beautiful village of Alfriston we came across this by chance. A lovely little pub with open fire, incredibly friendly staff, and brilliant food. 2 of us had the Sunday Roast Lamb which was really tasty and tender. Loads of heavy, which you don't get in many places without having to ask! One of us had the steak and that was also really tasty and tender. We tried 3 different deserts, the special lemon and orange pudding, fruit crumble and custard, and chocolate brownie. All were excellent. This was a lovely find, definitely book in advance! It's also Dog friendly, so perfect for walkers in the area. Very reasonable price given the service and quality of the food.

Pie unseasoned on couple times I’ve tried it now given up , owner never friendly which runs off on her staff that come an go , tables to small so chairs very close ok for me but can see would be very uncomfortable for lot people. Draughty and cold near door seating and cold up back where it just feels like you’ve been shoved out the way because of lack of service and generally not very nice area. Food portion size small for price, it’s not hard to see why the George is busy every day an smugglers not sadly , needs new life for such a beautiful village

A well deserved 1 star, my wife had the audacity to ask for more hot water with her £4.50 pot of tea after it was plonked on the table. She was told to be more specific when ordering. Please remember to say 'May I have a pot of tea please, may I also have a small amount of extra hot water please as I do not want it too strong thank you.' Hopefully, the tall bearded person behind the bar will say yes and not be defensive and berate you.

The building is fabulous. The morning staff not. Rude. Grumpy. And the breakfast shocking. Claimed to be continental! Unsure which continent. A table of dreadfully cheapest ever yoghurt, pre packed sugary soggy croissant, a tower an a loaf in a bag, watered down juice. Previous guests debris left everywhere. There are two other much nicer places in the village.

I really enjoyed my meal in this beautiful pub. I’d booked a table earlier in the day, and a table with my name on it by the mediaeval fireplace was waiting for me when I arrived. We went to The Smugglers on a recommendation for a special meal. There were five of us for a family lunch; we had a round table as requested but it was right by the door leading on to the road so not relaxing and quite draughty. The service was very slow and no one asked us if we had liked our meal. We all had different food but everything was served with frozen chips ( even though I had requested new potatoes) and a very boring salad. My stuffed pepper was sloppy and greasy with very few identifiable ingredients apart from whole stuffed olives which are an odd thing in a stuffing. My husband had the smoked haddock but it was dry and spiky despite being in a sauce. The burger was OK and so was the chicken. The portions were all small apart from the ham, egg and chips which was ordered by the only child in our group - she had the largest meal! We didn’t stay for dessert and we were not offered any. Unfortunately we will not be returning nor will we recommend the Smugglers to anyone else.

Nice pub, but for a Friday very quiet, Dinner was a bit hit n miss, whitebait nice and plenty of it, dinner however was somewhat disappointing, my rib eye steak was perfect but just a basic pub meal, my wife had the homemade pie which was very disappointing, it lacked flavour and seasoning (imo) the new potatoes were undercooked, can’t say much more. Parking is an issue also, such a shame as a large interesting pub, but certainly would go out of the way to eat again. Linolen

Stayed here for one night in December. Very Christmassy, roaring log fire, candles and decorations, and lots of nooks and crannies. Food was good pub grub, steak and ale pie, lovely roast. Great beer. Room was very quirky, sloping floors (they had to cut the bed and wardrobe legs to make them stand straight, diamond paned windows with a view out onto the village square and Christmas tree. Bathroom was tiny and fitted into an awkward space but OK. The only downsides were that the room was FREEZING initially, though they did fix that, and the breakfast was a cold serve yourself buffet left out over night as the staff had gone home. - pre packed Danish pastries, instant coffee, make your own toast, It was also a bit early for a Sunday, 8-9am. The bar lady snarled that it wasn't a coffee shop. The reply was We know but you are advertising coffee! The ill tempered bar staff then said well I hope you are all ordering food and wine to? We actually were. Throughout our visit she snarled and snapped and made rather rude and snide comments. Think this place needs a little education in customer service! We booked a stable here on a Monday in August during the EOTHO scheme which the restaurant claimed they were participating in.Upon seeing the menu we realised that the restaurant were swizzling the government and customers by changing the menu on Monday to Wednesday to force every customer to spend £20 for a meal (which would then reduce to £10) this also meant that you had to order a half pint of soft drink in the ‘deal’.We just had drinks (including non-alcoholic drinks) which should have been included in the EOTHO scheme, upon paying we asked for an itemised bill as being a table of 6 we wanted to split the bill fairly as some drank alcohol and some didn’t. The landlord told us that this was not possible and when we asked if the soft drinks were half price he replied with something like “well you were supposed to be eating and you didn’t” and couldn’t confirm whether our soft drinks had been discounted. The best word I can use to describe this restaurant is fraudulent!

The bar is screen off in plastic sheeting so you cant actually see the drinks on the shelves behind and theres a small opening to pass drinks/payment through. Did make us laugh! My wife and I had booked an overnight stay and on arrival following an awful journey due to motorway closure the welcome was very poor. No greeting, simply ‘sign that and complete this sheet’. Also, never introduced herself so I don’t know if she was the landlady or a member of the staff.Shown the room which have to say is pleasant and comfortable and told where to find the coffee, tea etc but all that was in the room there was only coffee and sugar, no cups, spoons, tea or milk. On asking at the bar the first response was ‘have you looked properly?’The evening meal was fine and service was okay.Normally we would book a room in the more ‘traditional’ hotel and this was our first stay in a village pub accommodation and unfortunately felt the overall experience was let down by the welcome.

We found finding somewhere with good reviews hard in Alfriston. Settled on the Smugglers which was a poor choice. It’s a shame because the Inn itself looked lovely and the landlady and the three members of staff were all working very hard. Covid precautions seemed haphazard. Big screens to protect at the bar then waiting staff sometimes wearing masks sometimes not. The garden table we were given (we had booked) wasn’t clear so we sat at an adjacent table. We were then told we had to sit at our allocated table which was then cleared but not sanitised. The lengthy one way route meant that to,order our desert , took twenty minutes as I had to go out to the road and wait to get in to the pub again. The George, nearby, managed ordering much better.Food. My vegetarian burger, the only option unless I went for a ploughman’s , was horrid. The bun was cheap. Chips soggy. Normal burger, wasn’t really a burger. Several bits of meat in a bun. Slightly rare... I went for the hummus starter instead of a puddling, it was the weirdest hummus I have ever had. I couldn’t detect any tahini, cumin or coriander... it was grainy too. Drinks were pricy too. Sorry, Lisa the landlady. You need more, better trained staff to succeed here.

We came here as a group to escape the rain after setting up at the local campsite. Our first impressions were not great - the owner (?) greeted us not by a hello, but by asking if we’ve booked a table. We hadn’t and were made to feel like we weren’t welcome because of that. We sat down and a few moments later, the same woman appeared again and very rudely told us we were “breaking the law” by sitting as a group of 8 round a table and asked us to leave. I completely understand there are Covid restrictions but these could have been explained in a nicer way. She then backtracked to say we could stay if we sat at separate tables.30 minutes later we got asked to leave again as the tables were apparently needed for “customers who had actually booked and wanted to order food”. So apparently if you don’t order a meal or don’t book, you’re not very welcome here.Overall rude staff and not a good first impression. We all went looking for a pub the following day and made sure not to return here due to the welcome we received, and certainly would not return.

Great. The other Main Course was a really tasty Beetroot Bourguignon ... a vegan dish, innovative and delicious (at just under £12).Friendly service ... very impressive.Just to say that it would have been a 5 out of 5 if the plates serving up the salmon had been just a little hotter. The photos of the food are very out of date and should be replaced. The food is several leagues above this now.The beer is very well kept and the selection of local beer very good, with the obvious Harveys, thankfully, and the food is generous and perfect pub fare, not food that tries too hard and belongs in a restaurant. They have pitched this perfectly. The second room could do with some additional warmth and atmosphere, and the annexe behind that is a bit scruffy, but the main bar area is the perfect country pub.Without doubt, the nicest pub in the stretch of South Downs between Lewes and Eastbourne, avoiding the gentrification of The Ram at Firle, and the ultimate sacrifice of the pub to food domination at The Cricketers at Berwick and Sussex Ox at Milton Street, which have become primarily family Sunday lunch pubs, which I cannot abide. Ye Olde Smugglers Inne is a proper pub, and all the better for it. I hope it never changes from what it is now.

Positives first! The bed was extremely comfortable and I slept like a dream. The room was very clean! The pub was quirky and characterful and half our meal was lovely. The staff were accommodating and friendly. The bad bits were my Camembert was microwaved to jelly and not edible but they did take this off our bill. Just as we were getting into bed though the bar staff had to come up to the office that was just outside our door and clamber around for 15-20 minutes which was off putting. There were no bedside tables or lights, the lights above the bed had a switch on the other side of the room so you had to navigate across the room in the dark to get into bed. The shower I just fit under and I’m 5’6” so my 6’ other half had to crouch to shower. The linoleum in the en-suite was fitted slightly poorly. Overall the room was pleasant but I feel the room was overpriced for what we received.

Single plate roast was £12, potato and leek soup £6.50, coffee £2.90My wife has had masses of stomach surgery, and can only eat very small quantities, so after I ordered the normal pork roast, she asked for a child’s portion.“We only do them for children” was the response.Such a shame that this inflexibility meant she then ordered a pate starter (and couldn’t eat all of that) rather than a small roast lunch. And with the best will in the world we weren’t going to order another £12 dinner just to throw more than half of it away. The food was fine though. The food was fabulous with a very wide choice from the menu and specials board. Parking is a bit of a problem in Alfriston as it’s a very small village but this wasn’t the pubs fault. Give it a go if your in the area.

We were in Alfriston walking the South Downs Way, and at the recommendation of our B&B; (Bo-peep Farmhouse) stopped by the Olde Smugglers Inne for dinner and a couple of drinks. It was immediately obvious that this was a locals pub in good way, and very welcoming to visitors. There were other walkers in and it was fairly busy despite it being a Tuesday. The cricket club weekly meeting helped swell the crowd.

If three people walk into a pub in the summer season in a tourist hot spot, and have missed the lunch order by 2 minutes, wouldn’t you think the business would be flexible enough to offer to serve them anyway (and take their £50)? Not Ye Olde Smugglers. But what really spoiled our visit was not that, it was the inhospitable tone and general attitude of the barman. I can’t say he was exactly rude, he just had that irritating knack of making you feel an unwelcome nuisance. The bloke is in the wrong job. We won’t be returning in a hurry and I suggest if you are in Alfriston then go to The George where we went next - they serve tasty food all day and the engaging staff understand it’s called the hospitality trade for a reason.

I'm going to start by saying that over the last 2-3 years we've been regulars here as it's always been a nice place to head out to the garden and get a light lunch.

Not many pubs have two names either the Smugglers or the Market Cross, take your choice. The pub has lots of nooks and crannies with a nice bit of Morris wallpaper over the fire place. The pub has character and I feel the only pub in the village for just a drink, as the other pubs are turning into restaurants. Food was good as was the beer and friendly staffed.

We had a meal here on our first evening in Alfriston. It was quite busy and very noisy, I went to see what the specials were on the blackboard, which a group of people standing in front of and clearly weren't prepared to move so I could see it properly along with the bland food. I wouldn t bother to visit again.

We’ve visited The Smugglers many times for lunch. The food is good and the Harvey’s bitter is excellent. The pub has an unpretentious quality (could do with some tarting up in places!) but that’s part of it’s charm... beer garden is great, if a little uncultivated, and never crowded!

A pleasant old village pub with a large wood fire. Rustic and clean dining arrangements, good range of beers and other drinks and a varied menu.

Decent beers, good pub grub and caters for vegans. Quite a good menu with something for everyone. Lacks the atmosphere of the George but more reasonably priced fodder. Can become crowded.

Nice old country pub staff lovely beers etc excellent.. however slightly tired in places and please no more continuous Boney M..greatest hits back ground music playing in order to entertain us all or create an atmosphere simply awful I would rather have pins poked in my ears and eyes than indure that awful eighties drone for an hour or more sorry it's 2018 now ! Very nice inn found in the square at alfriston. Dry large pub with a number of small cosy areas including the bar at the front with large fireplace. The pub is worth a visit and there is a lovely quiet garden at the rear. Food is available with a range of dishes. Beer we had was from the old man brewery and was excellent except for the price £4.50 a pint but worth it for a one off visit after a days walking. Just to the left excellent convenience store highly recommend the spicy beef pasties best ever we went back for another!

We stopped for a drink after a 7.5 mile walk. A great pint of beer. But a charge of £1.50 for a pint of fresh lime soda shows greed is alive and well in Alfriston.

Friendly staff and a fascinating old building. We found the food was OK, but not exciting. We only went once, so I never condemn a place on a one-off. Maybe the leek sausages weren't at their best, but to me, they tasted of nothing much. I'd certainly give it a second chance.

After a 7 mile walk 3 of us needed somewhere to eat in Alfriston. This place was well situated in the centre of town. A board outside advertised Sunday roast. We went in & found a table that was being cleared straight away, There was a choice of roast lamb or roast pork. After seeing all the sheep on the hills we chose lamb. It was a good choice & came quite quickly. There was an excellent choice of veg provided which we could not finish, it was so large. A nice pint & a jazz group playing rounded off the meal. It was quite a hike to the gents & I almost needed my compass to find the way back to our table. On great feature was the supply of blues hanging outside for walkers with muddy boots. I always carry my own but this is the first time I have seen them provided - well done.

only popped in after having a wander around to see where to eat, the beer in here was a little cheaper than the other 2 pubs, but jazz was playing and you could hardly hear yourself think let alone enjoy a dinner. so just a drink and left, it wa a little more modern than the other 2 pubs, would go back for a drink as it has a large garden

We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.

I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.
