Great to see the Anchor reopened as The Bear, some new people (all nice) plus of course the wonderful Ann. Only comment - my daughter and I shared a wonderful ploughman’s a couple of weeks ago which was a perfect lunch to share, but we went back on Friday and it has gone from the menu. Anyway it is a great pub

I visited today with four friends. It was a beautiful day and we sat in the garden, which was really well kept and very quiet. Lots of choice of tables and plenty of larger tables. The meals we ordered were well prepared, and tasty, with good size portions. There was a slight technical issue with the ordering system, but the friendly staff handled it with professionalism. I would highly recommend coming here, and look forward to my next visit.

The Anchor has recently reopened with refreshed rooms, services, kitchen etc… the ‘new’ anchor is a great addition to the regions food and accommodation. We stayed in the Pooh room and was a good place to stay in the centre of the village close to everything. Highly recommended place to stop whether walking across the region or just out visiting the countryside.

What a great little gem, sadly the original owner went into administration and the pub sadly closed while new owners were found. We were phoned by a lovely lady to explain what had happened. Glad we waited as the staff are so friendly and the rooms 5 star top quality. Food really nice for evening meals and breakfast is only continental included or hot for extra fee. What we had was adequate and filling. All in a great place to stay

This place CLOSED without notice to anyone who has a room reservation coming up. When I called to change something I was told they had closed and they was no one able to cancel the reservation or ensure my credit card would not be charged and to 'call back in 6 weeks and maybe there'd be someone there.' OMG! What a crock! I guess I'll be calling my credit card company now and reporting them to tripadvisor and booking.com and anywhere else they are not responsible enough to inform. I knew they were bad news when they would never answer emails and when you call there was never anyone there who handled the rooms or returned calls or emails.

So disappointed!!! We have ordered food and we received something with no taste, especially pigeon breast was tasteless but the worst part is, that we complained to waitress and he said “I will ask chef if that how should be” but he didn’t come back to us with answer. My husband couldn’t eat that and we expected at least something else or redound because our £18 was waste of money, and when we go to the bar and tell to lady that the food is not good at all, she said “thank you for feedback and I am so sorry” nothing about redound at all. We are working at hospitality and we know how customer service supposed look like, so shame of people who work there that they couldn’t do anything. You can see also my prawns for £21, they were covered with a lot of tempura, I could just eat prawns from inside.

I’ve just returned from having Sunday lunch. We were so disappointed. I had to send my meal back twice as it was cold first time then hot plate, cold food second time. It was also the most expensive bad roast dinner I’d ever had. The staff didn’t seem that bothered - too busy. We won’t be returning which is sad as it was a lovely pub ( 20 years ago).

It took nearly 2 hours (there were 2 children in our party) for our food to turn up and when it did they had forgotten the pork chop and sausage and mash. When the missing dishes finally turned up they were inedible (probably rushed out of the kitchen). We didn't want to make a fuss as our family hadn't seen each other for a while and didn't want to sully the moment. Also the older lady behind the bar seemed to have a problem with us splitting the bill! On top of this I realised after we had left they had charged us for an extra pork chop. Previously having been in the same line of business for a while I understand everybody can have a bad day but I can only describe it as complete chaos - it wasn't even busy! Definitely a thumbs down from us.

We had booked our table in advance and additionally rung ahead to say we would arrive later than planned. On arrival we were well greeted and drinks promptly arrived- however we had a long wait for our meal which then was delivered over a period of time. However the food was tasty and well presented. It was a cold day but the pub was absolutely freezing- there appeared to be no heating in the vacinity of our table and the fire despite being lit was too far away to benefit. Firstly we have always loved this pub and the food has always been great… so not sure what on earth has happened recently to let this slip so drastically. We visited for a Sunday roast - when you haven’t been asked if you want drinks or even been given a menu 25 minutes after sitting down, alarm bells start to ring. We were on the verge of leaving at this point. Staff were sparse and seemed to be avoiding us, apart from one poor lady who seemed to be absolutely run off her feet. Eventually we ordered drinks and two roasts, this was then followed by another 40 minute wait . Eventually the same lady realised how long we had been waiting and chased up our order which then arrived. The meat was delicious but all other elements were 1. stingy portion sizes and 2. average at best, with the parsnips still raw! We didn’t bother with puddings as we didn’t fancy another long wait. Our waiter was clearly new which is fine, but he literally had no idea and we felt sorry for him as the other staff seemed to be ignoring him - I think some training is in order! Only leaving this review in the hope that action is taken done to improve the dire situation.

We stayed here overnight after a wedding. Room was lovely and staff polite when we arrived. We were asked to choose a time to take breakfast so did so happily. However, the next morning when we came down for breakfast there were no staff members to be found. We had to search around the whole hotel to find anyone (the cleaner who then called the manager). It took 45 minutes to be served (not wonderful tasting) coffee. At this point we were offered food with no menu offered or anything the lad said ‘whatever you want’ when we enquired what was on offer. I requested eggs on toast and my husband asked for any version of a full English they could do. After 1.5hrs of waiting, a second table had arrived for their breakfast and we still hadn’t seen the waiter again. Neither breakfast was a difficult ask and especially as we had had to choose a time for breakfast we were shocked by this. We left our key and a note explaining this was not acceptable and left without breakfast as we had already wasted too much of our day waiting. We were called later that afternoon by a reticent waiter saying his boss had told him he had to apologise (not very convincing!) and offered a £20 refund total. We chased and chased the Inn for the refund and eventually had to speak to their accountant directly to get the money which we don’t believe would actually have been refunded otherwise (we were also waiting for £150 from a night cancelled previously within their cancellation policy which also hadn’t been refunded). All in all a terrible experience for which we were refunded just £20 a whole month after our stay. All I can say is don’t stay here.

Very poor experience. I sent the email below to provide the pub an opportunity to respond. Heard nothing after a week so posting here. I booked a table for 9 people for lunch . We arrived on time, but waited 1 hour and 40 minutes for any food which is unacceptable by anyone's standard. The table of 4 next to us arrived 45 minutes after us, received their food, ate it and left the pub before we got our food. Not once did your staff proactively come over, instead we had to get up from the table and find them x3 times for an update. We were told that some of the items on the menu take longer too cook than others which is nonsense, we had 2 x veggie burgers, a cold meats platter, a soup, fish and chips and normal burgers. These are quick cook plates. Incredibly the meat platter NEVER turned up and this was lunch for two of our people who were sharing so they went without anything. The two veggie burgers were so over cooked they were rock hard so both were in edible, you staff took the cost off the bill. So out of 9 meals 4 could not be fulfilled in 1 hour and 40 minutes. When the food did finally arrive someone from the kitchen did come over and explain and again was friendly. For ref the pub was at average capacity. I will say when we spoke with your staff they were friendly and polite. We were told that the kitchen was understaffed. This did not impact the table next to us who got served quickly PLUS this is not our problem. If it was an issue we should have been notified as we came in to the pub giving us the option to go somewhere else for food. Other than the burgers that were not charged because they were inedible, no comp was suggested or offered. For an experience so poor of service (though friendly), timings and food quality I would have expected all meals, excluding drinks, to be free of charge. I have eaten at the pub for years and in general it is good. Probably not again, mainly in light of not responding to the email I shared directly with them and they did not have the courtesy to reply.

Our first Sunday lunch out for a long time and we were really disappointed. We waited 10 mins to be seated. After 30 mins of waiting for the menu and drinks we went to the bar and asked. We then waited 1:15 for our food to arrive at the table. The steak pie was awful and we could barely eat it as there was far too much pepper in it. So we paid £97 for a lunch that we barely eat! The mash was good! Another table was in the same position and just left and refused to pay their bill. I couldn’t do that but I should have. We didn’t even get a discount. VERY DISAPPOINTED! We spent a night at The Anchor Inn as we were attending a wedding nearby. It’s a lovely, old pub with lots of character. Our room was clean and spacious if a little stuffy, but it was an incredibly hot weekend so that was to be expected. Breakfast service wasn’t great; we had to prompt a waiter to ask what the options were and he asked whether a full English would be okay. It was seemingly the only option, although we were all happy to have it and it was lovely when it arrived. Sadly the orange juice wasn’t freshly squeezed; it was more like watered down squash from a machine. The stairs up to the accommodation could also do with some love. They felt quite tatty compared to the rest of the pub. Overall, it was a good place to stay, but fell short in a few areas.

The worst pub meal I've had in a very long time. Vegan burger - £15. I'm not vegan, I just fancied a change. 8 chunky chips & the alternative to coleslaw was half a sliced red pepper. The burger was virtually black, the tomato had seen much better days & the whole meal was cold other than the chips. Other customers were chasing food up after 45 minutes & the pub was not busy. Kids throwing stones at people in the garden. An utter shambles & we won't be back.

We came here looking for some good food on the way home from a day trip and the food did not disappoint. However, the service was questionable. Whilst one waitress was lovely, I found the others to be rather moody. I completely understand that everyone has bad days but it’s the little things like not slamming the food on the table which makes a difference to a nice pub experience. I’ve worked in hospitality and I completely understand how difficult it can be but plonking the food on the table and then practically storming away is not the type of thing I would expect from such a highly rated pub but perhaps I just caught them on a bad day. Aside from that, the food was good.

Horrible experience and a waste of £80. We waited 45 minutes for our roast dinners, meanwhile watching the wrong food going out to other customers repeatedly so we were worried what were going to get. When the food came it was cold and tasteless, we had to ask for cutlery and sauces and I could not even cut the beef let alone chew it. Not acceptable for meals that cost £20 - £25 each. Sat oustide. The owner's dog (Tuffie?) was barking non-stop for the hour or so we were there. Someone came out and half-heartedly attempted to tell it to stop at one point but no result. The child with the family on the next table found a long piece of timber and was whacking the plants and tables with it, and eventually threw it at our table narrowly missing hitting us (parents weren't bothered). The blonde young lady serving behind the bar was rude and unwelcoming. Lovely staff, very helpful, and excellent food with well thought out vegetarian options. The pub is calm and relaxed with a traditional atmosphere. Lovely outdoor spaces too. Definitely recommend a visit

Roasts used to be really good! Now overpriced, greasy gravy, soggy roast potatoes, and greasy pork crackling that isn't crispy.

We booked a table for 12pm on Sunday 7th may (coronation weekend) We arrived only to be told that they only had pizzas and hog roast from 2pm. None of this was made apparent to me when booking online! It looked as through they were still clearing up from the night before! We sat down and ordered drinks from the bar. Nobody gave us a menu. Due to the lack of service we left.

Four of us had a lovely lunch at The Anchor on Easter Saturday. We ordered a selection of starters and sharers between us, which arrived promptly and were all well-cooked and generously portioned. All washed down with a lovely pint of Harvey’s. We sat on...

Yet again, truly appalling service. We live in the village and hadn’t been for months because the service was so bad last time. We thought we’d try again because the Gallipot was fully booked. A mistake again. Such a shame as my venison was lovely....

We needed a one night getaway after a stressful period at work. We were drawn to the Anchor Inn because of its countryside location, with the promise of country walks and cycling routes available nearby. We spent just one night there on Friday 21st April,...

Disappointed in this pub. Under staffed. I waited just under an hour for food . I got a £25 sirloin steak and wasn’t even asked how I’d like it, that was alarm bells straight away. No music or atmosphere I was looking for. Food was ok . But wouldn’t go again. Friendly young staff but it just didn’t cut it for me.

A nice pub in a decent village in East Sussex. Food was respectable but I'm well Awre that my appetite while on bike rides can help convert average food into something delicious so I'll reserve judgement until I've visited again. There is a spacious garden but I was disappointed as some careless dog owners hadn't cleaned up after their dogs so my group had to move to another table for our lunch. Overall its a pub I wouldn't mind returning to.

I have cycled past here so very very often and never tried the cafe. I should have read the reviews on here first! I stopped for a latte and a cake and the guy working here I am sure does not drink coffee. He was so out of his depth with the coffee machine I ended up with just hot milk!! In the old adage “You only get one chance to make a good first impression” Sorry but this time you failed. Yelling at me when I left that I could not go down and look at the lake as I might upset the fishermen having earlier told me there were no fishermen was not worth debating either. In short if you fish here use the cafe, if you are passing…… Keep on passing.

This country pub had been on our list for ages and so as it was my birthday weekend we booked for Sunday lunch. We'd checked the menu before booking so we knew the roast was pricey at £24 for the roast beef. We usually pay between £16 and £20 elsewhere. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was disappointing. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef but I found it very fatty and chewy. There were fewer vegetables than expected, half a carrot, 3 very small, very hard roast potatoes and a pile of kale. The Yorkshire pud was large but mainly soggy. The gravy was delicious. Also elements of the dish were less warm than others. The pub is lovely and had a good drinks menu but we were seated in the bar area and had to listen to staff discussing their rotas at length. Perhaps if we'd been in the main restaurant area or outside we'd have had a better experience. Maybe consider your portion sizes especially the veg. We didn't stay for desert.

Brilliant new proprietors from March 2024 with very high standards. So ignore 2023 reviews and the food and other pics are out of date. The accommodation area is not open yet as major refurb in progress. I went up for a music night in July and I am going up this week to sample the pub menu, and will certainly be booking ahead as soon as the hotel part does open, as I don’t drive, so a relaxing visit to Wadhurst for me, require a stop over. I am confident this team’s famous high standards will transform this historic building into a classy stay. The kitchen is entirely new, state of the art, and sparkling and immaculate, ( I was given a tour ) and I am looking forward to traveling to Wadhurst now they are serving food, as I know this chefs food is top notch. And with the welcoming bar team, I will feel comfortable and looked after. As a fussy woman who is used to dining alone, or taking others to dine in top establishments around the foodie cities of Brighton, Malaga and Paris, I have a high standard for hospitality and food. The new proprietors at the Greyhound are warm and welcoming and have high standards of hygiene and hospitality, I know this from their other ventures, I can’t wait to eventually stay over and enjoy the village of Wadhurst when the hotel part opens. Until then I am taking the bus up from Brighton this week to sample the new pub menu, as I know the chef is first class, and with such a good hospitality team I can confidently invite a party of people knowing they will be happy and looked after. On the new menu I will report my findings in detail!
