We were looking forward to a nice family meal for a birthday celebration and booked the tasting menu. On arrival at 6.30pm the restaurant was very quiet but we assumed that was because we’d booked early due to childcare etc. There was a pianist playing and the ambience made us think we were in for a real treat. We ordered some drinks before the first course as we had preordered wine for when the food came. These drinks took over an hour to arrive and had to be chased several times despite there only being about 5 tables of people. When the food started to arrive, at each course we had to ask what we were being served. There is a sample tasting menu on the website but only for the meat option and not for anyone who is vegetarian. It also states as a sample menu not the actual menu. The waiters had no idea what they were serving us. On the first course I asked what I had expecting an explanation as you get as standard in all other fine dining tasting menus I’ve had and I was told “it’s beetroot” - ok I can see that but beetroot with what? On to the next course after another 45 min wait which was bone marrow for the meat eaters. Despite pre booking the vegetarian tasting menu I had to chase my food as everyone else had finished eating their course before mine arrived and had I not chased I’m not sure I would have got it. When it arrived I asked what it was and was told Gorgonzola. Again what does this come with? The next few courses were painfully slow and again the wait staff could not explain a single dish to anyone on the table. As the wine flowed and the food didn’t materialise those who were drinking were getting tipsy. By the pudding course, those with children had to leave and so didn’t get their pudding or coffee and petit fors course. When the creme brûlée finally arrived close to 11pm the blackberry sorbet on the online menu was missing off every plate and some plates had shortbread biscuits on but others didn’t so we had to ask yet again for those who had been missed. When we were offered the coffee at 11pm no one wanted it as we were tired and getting irritated. The restaurant was entirely empty at this point and the staff were setting up for breakfast the next day around us while we waited for the dinner that would never end (and not in a good way.) One of our party did complain to management but I’m not sure what was said. For a highly rated restaurant the experience was sorely lacking. The wait staff need proper training in how to present a tasting menu not just slap down a plate and walk away. The kitchen was painfully slow for a restaurant that was mostly empty and no where near capacity- it was absolutely not worth the price slapped on it.

Had Sunday lunch. Service lacked attention to detail (e.g. knife missing from table setting, limited bread rolls available), but generally okay. Pate was fine. Ceviche was unlike ceviche I've had elsewhere, and was, in my opinion, unpleasant and slimy. Roast beef meal was excellent, although some beef slightly tough. Sticky toffee pudding and apple and blackberry tart were very good. Would return (but would avoid the ceviche)

Had Sunday lunch in the Anderida restaurant. A vast restaurant that fortunately was fairly full, otherwise it would have lacked atmosphere. The service and food were both very good although my wife's ceviche starter was disappointing and she couldn't eat it. I also found it unpalatable. The prices were reasonable, particularly with the Elite diners discount. Had a nice walk in the extensive grounds after. We will return.

We were regular visitors years ago and stopped when the standards dropped but had heard that things were much improved so we we booked for a table of 10 on Saturday evening to celebrate a 21st Birthday. Sadly we were very disappointed from beginning to end. On arrival, we waited 15 minutes for our two drinks to arrive from an almost empty bar with two staff members (and were asked several times whether we'd ordered a pint or a half!) The menu we were given to view, while waiting for our guests to arrive, was shabby and dog-eared. This did not bode well. We were also told that two items on the menu were not available - at 6pm on a Saturday evening? Thereafter, service and food was lacklustre despite the high 'fine dining' prices. Sadly, fine dining it was not. We ordered two bottles of wine which were delivered to the table with screw top attached for us to pour ourselves (even in the lost basic of pubs, wine is poured). As drinks glasses we emptied, these remained on the table for the duration of the meal, as did the bread plates. The portions for each ordered meal were extremely variable - chicken supreme was small while the linguini was huge. Food presentation was uninspired. The staff were chearful enough but the crisp professional silver service we'd expect was missing. If you are aspiring to fine dining, e.g. with the pallate cleanser sorbet (in overly large misty glasses), the amuse bouche, bread and the prices, please review the details and service skills. There is so much potential.

Very disappointed, was looking forward to our visit for Sunday lunch. Started off okay, we gave our drinks orders and after a ten minute wait only one drink arrived so had to chase this up. Starters were fine. We had two Pork belly’s which the meat was fine but the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding was very dried, we ordered extra Jus which never arrived so my wife ended up leaving half her dry dinner. Dessert was fine other than chocolate being on the plate with no description on the menu. Personal hygiene of one of the waiters was poor which was strange as he was dressed well.

We had Sunday lunch at the hotel restaurant today, booked several weeks ago for a family birthday. We experienced appalling service and mediocre food. My summary is as follows: I ordered a pre-meal bloody mary which was utterly undrinkable. It tasted like it was made with vinegar. It was so acidic I actually have a mild stomach ache while writing this review some 5 hours later. Half the table settings did not have napkins. We waited around 45 minutes before our first course was served. We then waited a further lengthy period before our main courses were served. I ordered the sirloin of beef which arrived as two thin slices of meat with some very averagely cooked roasted vegetables and a doughy yorkshire pudding, none of which were over hot. We were not offered horseradish sauce or mustard. One of our group was a four year old who had to wait a good 10 minutes after everyone else had been served their food. Some of our group of 10 were still eating when the waiter began to clear the plates and was told to stop. Our dessert seemed to take forever to arrive. When it was eventually served, again the poor four year old had to wait another 15 minutes before he got his plate of ice cream. His mum questioned why this was happening and was told that the ice cream had to be fetched from a different kitchen, however, the majority of the desserts included ice cream! Surely they could have got the young boy's order first so that he could tuck in and not have to look at everybody else's plates. We then made the mistake of ordering coffee. After yet another considerable wait this was finally brought to the serving station near to our table and then promptly forgotten about by the staff. After several prompts, and being told that all the adults wanted coffee, the waiter then brought the coffee cups, but only had enough for half the diners at the table. He then simply walked off. We had to go and search for some extra cups ourselves. When the coffee was finally poured, my wife noticed that the cup she had been given by the waiter didn't have a handle. It was only then that we realised that she had been given a sugar bowl to drink from (I promise you I'm not making this up). At this point we complained and were told that the restaurant was short-staffed, begging the question why did they accept our booking in the first place? To add insult to injury my wife was told it wasn't her fault (?). Throughout the meal the room was stiflingly hot, and we only noticed the large upright, unused fan by the door as we were leaving. Our meal was paid for by our host, and I can only hope that he removed the service charge. Overall this was a disgrace. The best part of the meal was the wine, which our host had brought with him and paid the corkage ( I presume).

Exquisite. Just loved it We had cocktails in the bar, followed by an outstanding vegan three-course meal. The cherry and amaretto sorbet dessert was one of the best we’ve ever tasted! Humble thanks to Kevin for the warm welcome; Jay for making fab cocktails; restaurant manager Marcio for being a gracious host; and pianist Ian for playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Vivaldi’s Spring so beautifully. Unrivalled style and taste... We loved everything – the grand drive up, the lush forest setting, the stained-glass windows, the bespoke cocktails, the plant-based menu. Excellent service from waiters Johnny, Keith, Kazimir, Romeo and Richard too. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.

The food served in this restaurant is very good, but having stayed in the hotel for two nights, the menu does not vary day to day and so we did not eat in the restaurant on the second day. However, there is another restaurant in the hotel grounds in the spa building. The staff in the Anderida restaurant are efficient, professional and attentive and they also catered well for my no/low salt diet. The breakfast served in the restaurant is also excellent, with a large selection available, for either help yourself buffet style or al la carte from a menu.

I am so disappointed with this place. It is expensive so one would expect better than average food and service. I asked for lemon with my octopus which didn’t arrive and there was no seasoning on the table. Normally I wouldn’t notice but some dishes were needing seasoning My dessert was inedible. My brownie dessert at £14 was like dust and I felt the villain when I sent it back. I literally can’t remember when I have had to send food back. No coffee offered. I had to wander to ask for the bill. Thoroughly underwhelmed.

The food was good for the most part. Octopus starter wad lovely. Pork roast was extremely dry and we were certain the potatoes had either been reheated or (shiver!) frozen! Desert was ok. Cheese plate was lacking freshness. Service was appalling. Incredibly slow and even though we were the first table to enter the restaurant, we were the last to leave as there had been such a long gap between course. All staff looked miserable and we felt like an absolute inconvenience. We had to ask for our bill to be corrected twice for random items that had been added when we hadn’t ordered them. £4.50 for a small glass of Diet Coke is also extortionate. Overall, it was an average experience with a painful price tag. We would not return.

Restaurant located on the ground floor of the Ashdown Park hotel. Old style huge dining room. Restaurant had allocated a good table ti reflect an older guest in our party. Food was all very good, Chateaubriand was excellent. Wine list was extensive and excellent. Like the rest of the hotel the service was slow and chaotic throughout. Again the staff themselves were good, just not well organised/managed. Still overall an enjoyable dining experience in a great setting.

I've deleted my previous review after the management replied to my wife and offered a complimentary stay and meal. We were not at all happy with the food before but we accept that staff challenges due to Covid may have quite an impact on a countryside hotel. Our previous experience was poor service, including a Maitre D' who was unfamiliar with the tasting menu, a lax attitude to Covid precautions (we both caught Covid after our visit) and the food was not freshly prepared. It was far from the gourmet experience they were charging for. I also question exactly how the AA awards rosettes. I expected two rosettes to be at least decent food. Some dishes were just poorly conceived. I question the skill of the chef that would pile sweet upon sweet. I know the English have very sweet tastes but not everyone appreciates such sugary fare. I'll leave it at a three for now and edit accordingly once we have another chance to eat there.

The food was supposedly “award-winning gourmet cuisine” . We were extremely disappointed. The menu was very limited and apart from the soup and fish was the same each evening. The food itself was very disappointing even thought the chef had been very innovative in cooking the “cheaper” ingredients into a tower of well-cooked but a bizarre main course. The result was an unpleasant costly experience bordering on being inedible. The hotel has responded by saying that they now have a new Executive Chef. Sadly this was too late to save our experience and stay with them. An offer of an upgrade should we visit again is inadequate in these circumstances

Went here for dinner last night and the food was really tasty. Both starters were lovely and the joint of the day cooked to perfection. I had the monk fish and pork which was nice but when paying nearly £30 would have expected more monk fish. Still enjoyed it and staff friendly. We also went for breakfast which was included in our room rate. The breakfast was nice and all condiments there. Would say £24 pp for breakfast is slightly steep if not included in room price.

The restaurant is very impressive as is the whole hotel. It’s a formal restaurant but very comfortable and spacious. The food was delicious however the service overall not up to scratch. We were not acknowledged at any time as we walked into the hotel or the bar and we had to ask for drinks and food menus. This was all before the meal however - the service during the meal was far better. The hotel felt rather chilly as well - lighting the fires would have been a bonus. But we all had a very nice time and as I said the food could not be faulted.

My wife and I attended the Anderida restaurant for Sunday lunch using a gift voucher given to her to celebrate an important birthday. Having enjoyed lunch we were presented with the bill which obviously covered our meal drinks but I noticed immediately that coffee was charged despite this being included within the voucher. Without being given the opportunity to view the remainder of the bill it ewas removed but then returned to include the obligitary service charge. I once again had to point out that this was also included within the voucher by showing this to the member of staff who responded by simply saying that 'he did not read the small print'. With he having to return yet again with the amended bill this made us feel somewhat uncomfortable in view of others present and took the shine from the occasion. Could I suggest that if vouchers continue to be sold that staff are made fully aware as to what is included for how many other guests have been incorrectly overcharged yet, perhaps, have chosen not to query?

We did not complain because the staff were so kind and lovely and they looked freezing! Our fault because we should have waited until the hotel opened inside! But we were away for the weekend in Forest Row and decided to go there. Such a shame I was so looking forward to it, we could not wait to get out of there as we were freezing, even though they supplied us with lovely blankets. Such a shame.

Today the government has changed their rules so today they would all have to be wearing their masks, but surely it's good sense. On reflection I noted our two waitresses were walking pretty close to' each other too. Most of the clientele seemed to be over 60...surely they have a duty of care. When i check trip advisor for much humbler eating places, alot have staff wearing masks before the government told them they must...WHY NOT HERE!? I did phone them today..I was told staff do get a temperature screen every day ...but that is only an indication. I was impressed they had hands free alcohol gel dispensers, they took our details, wiped our tables and others every hour and after someone has dined. Its a wonderful place which has let itself down.

Bearing in mind reservations called us the day prior to our booking to make sure dining in the drawing rooms would be suitable and received an email to confirm said arrangements. We requested to speak to the Deputy Manager, I was received in a private room by the Reservation manager who proceeded to tell me she heard the conversation I had with her colleague and insisted I was told the restaurant was closed... outrageous behaviour and disappointing service: shame as it’s such a beautiful place! We were staying in the hotel as part of a birthday treat for my wife. We'd been before and it really is a stunning location. Staying in a 5-star hotel, we expected 5-star food and service but were sorely disappointed. We prefer to eat earlier, but were told that 8:30 was the first table they had; so we arrived in the hotel bar 10 minutes beforehand for a pre-dinner drink. We were greeted and shown to a seat in the bar, but it was probably another 10 minutes or so before someone took our drinks order. Only one person was available to to take the drinks order, prepare it, and deliver it, and that included serving people who just wanted a drink as well as those having dinner. It really needed a full-time bar person plus others to manage the demand. Eventually, we got our drinks and then were brought the menu to place our order for starter and main courses. It was after 9pm before we told that our food was ready and shown to our table in the main restaurant and 9:35 before an amuse bouche was delivered; bread rolls followed about 10 minutes later and our starter arrived after 10pm - remember that we had an 8:30 table booking which was later than we really wanted anyway. The food looked good, but was nothing special. My licorice duck sounded interesting but was pretty tasteless. My wife ordered the goat's cheese tart, expecting the texture, consistency of a cooked product, but it came as a goat's cheese mouse with a couple of shards of pastry. Not what she was expecting or looking forward to eating: a completely different texture, and a cold dish. The main course was finally delivered after another long wait well after 10:30. Oddly, the plates and the accompaniments were hot but the main feature (lamb and fish respectively) was lukewarm. My wife enjoys being able to eat fish when we are out but found it dry and hard to chew: it had either been very overcooked or had been sitting waiting for service for far too long. It wasn't moist or falling off when she cut into it; it had lost its flavour and much was left uneaten. The desserts were probably the highlight, though not "stand-out" dishes, as 24 hours later, we don't really remember what they were; and we'd probably have been getting ready for bed out of choice as it was now gone 11pm. Oddly, the table next to us had ordered the tasting menu and were receiving regular and timely deliveries of food while we waited and waited. We felt pretty much abandoned and forgotten. Finally we had ordered two cappuccinos (one decaff) which were eventually delivered by a flustered waitress who muttered something about how she'd done her best - this is a 5-star hotel! There were a few random bubbles on top which quickly dissipated but that was it and the decaffeinated one had large amounts of coffee grounds in the bottom which my wife ingested. We called for water, but the waiter (Connor) didn't really listen and dashed off, only to return 5 minutes later with two more coffees. By this point, our patience was exhausted and we turned them away and left (dinner has now taken nearly three hours, and my wife desperately needed water to rid her of a lot of coffee grains in her mouth). On reaching the desk, I explained the issue and we were promised that it would be raised with the kitchen. We were also offered glasses of champagne which, by this stage, was not really appropriate or welcome. Various items were removed from the bill, which was good, but no real explanation was offered, and there seemed to be a note of resignation that this had happened. The initial hotel bill we were sent by email, included charges for the cost of the two courses which we had pre-paid in the room rate (although it had taken account of the discounts we were offered to compensate for our poor meal the previous night). Had we not managed to get to reception quickly this would have been charged straight to my credit card as part of their COVID policy to avoid face-to-face contact with reception. However the hotel reception staff were incredibly helpful, listened to us, and sorted out the billing error very efficiently and professionally (although it took some time and two separate members of staff due to an antiquated computer system). Our thanks to them. What a real shame that their colleagues in the restaurant and kitchen were not working at this level, also. It's difficult to know what the problem is but it seems to be the kitchen that is at fault, although the waiting staff did not seem to notice the extended waits and ignored us for long periods. There also didn't seem to be a Maitre D at dinner to coordinate and keep things moving along. Poor at any level but unacceptable for a hotel and restaurant of this standard.

Lovely three course sunday lunch beautifully presented in a very pleasant dining room and relaxed atmosphere. We were overlooked by the bread waiter but didn't let this spoil the otherwise excellent unobtrusive service. The cut of sirloin was superb. Vegetable portion a little sparse and perhaps more gravy would ease the dryness of the potatoes and Yorkshire pudding but otherwise enjoyable, right up to the point the bill arrived! We did have a nice bottle of wine (£38) and pre dinner drinks, plus coffee, but £150 is pretty steep for lunch by any standards. I don't paying a premium for good wine but £3.90 for a small schweppes lemonade mixer is quite frankly astonishing.

More of a 4.5 and not quite a 5 however as, despite booking for 8pm, still found the dining room being reorganised around us for breakfast (unobtrusively), had a small error on the bill (changed promptly) and found the starters a little too minimalist (but tasty). We appreciated a complementary glass of champagne to celebrate our anniversary, although sadly at the end of the meal when I couldn't drink it (as the designated driver). Would certainly recommend this restaurant to others without hesitation.

Lovely meal while staying in the hotel. Staff were lovely and could not do enough for us. The food was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. We also received an amuse bouche and sorbet as part of the meal. Would love to dine here again, a real treat.

Our meal was excellent, service impeccable, a truly wonderful experience. I booked lunch for 16 friends to celebrate my birthday. Six of us had the spa experience in the morning. We all met and had drinks in the bar and then we had 2 tables of 8 by the window overlooking the beautiful grounds. We had the 3 course set lunch menu and the food was exceptional. Interesting choice of starters and then for mains most of us had the duck which was perfectly cooked, served with a flourish as it arrived under silver covers and was then revealed by the 3 waiters at the same moment. Service was efficient but we didn't feel rushed and being a Monday we had the place almost to ourselves. After lunch we were served coffee and chocolates on the terrace overlooking the fountains and then a walk around grounds resplendent with banks of different coloured hydrangeas all beautifully maintained. We were very well looked after by all the staff which was attentive but relaxed and friendly and we are all planning to go there again as it was definitely worth the drive from Brighton.

To celebrate our 47th Wedding Anniversary we decided to lunch at the Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club. For under £20.00 per head we had the most delicious 2 course meal with unlimited coffee. As part of our hotel package at the Ashdown Park Hotel we were required to dine one night at the Anderida. So glad we did. The food and service were wonderful. My wife and I usually go for small plates so we can share and taste different things. This time we went for the Chateaubriand. It was perfectly cooked and tasted so delicious. We also sat near the pianist who added a bit of romance to the mix. Quite nice!

Enjoyed an outstanding meal here recently. The staff are outstanding, the service attentive and the food interesting, creative and tasty. We started off with cocktails and nibbles in the lounge overlooking the grounds, which was lovely. I chose off the ala carte menu - salmon to start, monkfish for main and a chocolate fondant for dessert. All the food was utterly delicious and the service was truly outstanding. We will be back!

I booked a table in The Anderida Restaurant for our family Mothers' Day celebration (Saturday). The Hotel had been recommended by a work colleague and we were not disappointed; the staff were friendly and helpful (one appeared to be in training, however he was well mentored and all staff were very polite), the food and service were excellent. The salmon starter was delicious, the main course beef was cooked as we individually wished. The Creme Bruleé, lemon posset and cheese and biscuits were excellent. We were fortunate enough to have good weather so an after lunch stroll around the vast grounds, followed by tea on the terrace overlooking the lake, was the perfect finish to our memorable day. We shall all be returning!

We had lunch in this restaurant today having recently been here one afternoon for tea and cakes. We enjoyed our tea in front of a blazing log fire in a comfortable lounge overlooking the Ashdown Forest in the heart of the Sussex countryside and decided there and then that we would return here for a birthday lunch in the Anderida restaurant. What a mistake! This is without doubt one of the worst meals that we have ever had anywhere in the world and it's not cheap! My wife had the lemon sole as a main course and it was stone cold. I had lamb which had been overcooked and was therefore 'muttony'. The portions were small which was OK by me as I prefer quality over quantity. The staff were friendly enough but quite obviously untrained in basic waiting at table etiquette let alone silver service protocols. It's a great shame that a country hotel in this advantageous location should be let down by such a poor restaurant. We shall not be returning to this restaurant unless Elite Hotels properly train their staff and find a new chef. We eat out in this area nearly every week and I'm afraid this restaurant is poor value for money and a definite avoid. A pleasant location though none the less.

The food is generally to a very good standard. I think it does need a bit of a revamp as it really hasn’t changed for years. But it’s a case of it isn’t broke so don’t fix it. Waiters are attentive, a little to so to be honest. The very second our we had finished each course the plates were taken away and the next course was bought out, this did feel a little overwhelming. There is also meant to be a dress code for the restaurant, again unfortunately this has slipped significantly which again detracts from the evening. As your siting there having made an effort to dress smartly and seeing someone walk past with trainers and t shirt. Overall a pleasant evening but again with a few things that need attention..

Went for a beautiful 3 course meal at this restaurant. The grounds are beautiful, it was a shame we went at night. They have deers wandering about, lovely to see them in their natural environment. The food was impressive, the staff were so polite and prompt to serve you. I cannot fault the staff or the restsurant. The historic building that the restaurant is situated within is absolutely beautiful, they have tried to retain the periodic look. I have to say i was very impressed with this and as soon as you step foot into the old house, you feel welcomed and a bit nostalgic. We are definitely going back.

From the moment we sat down at the bar we enjoyed ourselves. The waiters brought over the menu as we were having a drink to take our order before we sat down. From there it was warm, catered service and very delicious food! We had 3-course menu meals which included mains of beef wellington and roast pheasant (with Amuse bouches before). The Anderida Restaurant provides fine dining in the Ashdown Park Hotel. The look and feel of the room are exactly what we expected in a good country house hotel. The food and service are outstanding. The maitre d Valentin was gracious and friendly, providing excellent recommendations. My wife and I enjoyed an excellent chateaubriand for two the first night. We have eaten here many times. We have requested that as a gluten free vegetarian we are offered more than risotto. The choices we were offered this afternoon were very average. The sirloin ordered was very tough and tasteless. The service we received from a man called Sebastian was the worst I have ever experienced. I had just put the last mouthful in my mouth and was just about to put my knife and fork down when he removed our plates. He cleared up and didn’t ask us if we wanted more bread rolls or if we were finished. My crackers were brought to the table ten minutes before my cheese was. Diet Coke was flat. Brownie was cold and tasted like it was shop bought. This is not the type of experience we want to pay for. The hotel is tired and very run down. We will not return here as we have the same experience over and over.

I came to this restaurant for dinner last Saturday evening as part of a spa break. A 3 course dinner was included or you could use the value towards the a la carte menu instead. The food is pretty rich so I only went for 2 courses but they are large portions so was very full indeed. I had the terrine to start and then the pork. My boyfriend had the goats cheese tart, venison and chocolate fondant. Everything was high quality and tasted very nice. They also gave us a small entree of carrot soup and a small palate cleanser of raspberry sorbet which were lovely additions too. Service was excellent except a little slow to get the bill. They had live piano music which added to a romantic atmosphere.

We've been here several times before and each time we return it has dropped a minute amount in our estimation. The food and the staff are wonderful but little extras have gone from the service, they used to give very nice nibbles with pre-dinner drinks now they do not, the dining room staff used to come into the cocktail bar and discuss the menu with you and whether you had any particular requirements my wife has a wheat and dairy intolerance which we had made them aware of before our visit and despite this she couldn't have bread with her meal because whilst they had gluten free bread it wasn't dairy free and there was not one dessert on the menu that she could have, but they did eventually do her a fresh fruit salad with sorbet. Sorry but in this day and age their menu definitely needs to be far more food allergy aware.

Not bad, but it is not achieving what it aspires too. This is true in all respects, quality of food, service and decor. Consequently, it is poor value.I should stress, in relation to the service, that the individual members of staff were very friendly, but they are being asked to wait in the grand style, but haven't had the training for it. They would be better to go for a more relaxed friendly style which would suit the staff they have.As it is, it is all a bit sub Agatha Christie.

This is good old fashioned dining with domed plate covers, table-side serving, a view of the countryside and the grand piano to add to the atmosphere. The décor is tired and food presentation is not modern, but this is worth over-looking to sample the solid, flavoursome cooking.
