We had an utterly delicious delicious Sunday roast at the Halfway House. The food was really tasty, and served in abundance! I had the vegan option, nut roast, which was perfectly cooked - the mushroom gravy tasted great, too. The 12 other people I was with ate lamb, chicken, beef and pork - all reported that their food was perfect. We will be back and we recommend The Halfway House to anyone who wants lots of great food to enjoy.

Had a fantastic Sunday lunch today in the expansive beer garden. A quality pint of Harveys Sussex Best is always a lure for me. Roast beef was the choice and boy, oh boy, did it deliver. The beef, a glorious sirloin, slices cut thickly, was cooked perfectly, full of flavour and tender too. The accompanying roasted vegetables comprised of.. roast potatoes, roast kumara, roast parsnip. All were crunchy on the outside yet fluffy in the middle. Perfect with the giant Yorkshire pudding. The seasonal vegetables were.. Carrots, cabbage, broccoli, mashed swede, cauliflower cheese and cheesy leeks. Oh, the gravy which was rich, dark are very flavourful. A real treat. The lunch was an absolute hit. Sadly today I could not fit in one of the many delicious classic Sunday lunch desserts sadly. Would I go again? Absolutely 100%

Without question, and consistently, the best delivered Sunday roast in this part of Sussex ! Delicious boned and rolled Lamb Shoulder, really excellent home made gravy (so hard to get these days), great roast potatoes, parsnip, carrots, cauliflower cheese, leeks, brocoli, red cabbage and a cracking Yorkshire pudding all beautifully cooked and served by a friendly and happy team. Add in some of the best kept Harvey's in Sussex, and all at a sensible price, you won't go wrong here. 10/10 and highly recommended, but do book (especially if you want the Lamb!) as there is good reason as to why its so popular !!

My Dad and I went to the Halfway house for an evening meal. We had been not there for many years. We were impressed by the menu and the specials board. When the food came we were really pleased. The starters were quite substantial and the main courses (we both had chicken kiev) were tasty and nicely presented, with separate dishes for vegetables. The food was good value for money and the pub had a good atmosphere, although it was fairly quiet. The only downside was that the varnished table surface was a bit sticky, and I heard diners at an adjacent table also comment on that. Something like some hot water and vinegar and a synthetic "shammy leather" might deal with that. I look forward to going back again

There's no doubt that this is a lovely pub and a good place to stop off. The pub inside is lovely. The garden is in a nice spot, but it needs some TLC as it was somewhat neglected. My major reason for scoring only three stars though is the prices: £21 for two pints of shandy and two portions of chips is expensive. But if money is no object to the reader, then I recommend this pub.

This was our first visit for the four of us and will probably be the last. The crab salad was nice with generous portions of crab. The puddings were poor, however with the spotted dick being quite hard and was clearly overcooked. Our main complaint was the attitude of the staff who were a bit miserable although it was a very hot day! When the waitress was asked if one of our party could have onion free gravy we were told it was not possible. Surely any decent chef could rustle up gravy without onion to go with the roast beef. Another moan was that when the bill came, it just showed a total amount with nothing itemised. When we asked if we could have the bill itemised, the staff seemed to get a bit huffy. An itemised bill should always be a must. It was a shame really, as the main courses were nice but we do like to be made welcome.

Popped in here yesterday after a long drive home from up north. Pub was fairly busy. I went around the side of the bar by the hatch so I could see what was in the fridge. I waited patiently and was largely preoccupied by their adorable springer spaniel. A lady then came over to help me - a senior looking member of the team (in her 50s). As she did so, she acknowledged a couple on the main face of the bar (who turned up well after me) saying "i'll be with you in a minute". I asked her about what beers they had and wanted help picking something nice and non-alcoholic for my pregnant wife. We VERY briefly talked through options and again, whilst doing so she acknowledged the couple at the bar saying "sorry, I won't be a minute". Now I thought I'd decided on a drink for my wife, but the barmaid said "sorry, I'm a bit confused by what you're after". Rather baffled, I said "a drink and possibly to grab some food - we're sat outside". She abruptly poured the first drink as if id put her out. I went round to the main bar to check the beer pumps and what they had on (not alot) and when I asked she replied "well yes, just Peroni in the fridge and what you see here" - as if it were obvious or that I was being thick. Then for a THIRD time apologised to the couple now stood next to me. It was at this point I'd had enough, so I said "sorry, am I not welcome here or something, should I not be ordering a drink? You don't seem to want to want my custom and you keep apologising to this couple as if they are for some reason more important You are being rude". Now instead of apologising, saying they were extremely busy or explaining perhaps Id been stood in the wrong place she just said "no i wasnt, no i wasn't". So still ZERO effort or ounce of hospitality towards me. My final response was to say "Dont worry about the drink- may I suggest that you get yourself some manners and additional staff". I headed out the door, apologising to those nearby as to show the lady an example of basic etiquette - 2 locals then had the audacity to try and defend her! Such a shame, such a bad experience! I feel i was victimised for being a middle aged male, had my pregnant wife been at the bar i can't imagine them treating her that way. Also I am affiliated with the maintenance of Plashetts Park which is opposite the pub, had said to my partner that it would be nice to meet her and bubba there for dinner / tea on a regular basis once I'd finished duties. I now have zero intention of going or confidence that I'd be welcomed. Very disappointed and disheartened

I would strongly recommend that the restaurant implement a staff training day, as the service was shocking, especially given the price point. For £17.95, I was served an elderflower fizz that was reminiscent of a Wetherspoons cocktail—no garnish, too much sugar syrup, served in a gin bowl with excessive ice and just a straw and stirrer. It took ages to arrive after we had to order at the bar, due to a lack of staff taking orders at the table. The barman who appeared to be working solo was clearly flustered and evidently required either help or supervision, as the drink quality, presentation, and wait time was just not good enough for the price. This was just the start of a series of disappointments. My partner and I were then shown to our table, which was in an empty second room. Whilst this may seem romantic, we found it rather strange, especially considering the other room was nearly full. It seemed like the seating should have been split more evenly. We were greeted by another waitress who seemed pleasant but was unfortunately uninterested and lacked knowledge of the dishes. When we asked for recommendations, she responded with, "I don’t know. It depends on your palate." Typically, I would have expected more enthusiasm and knowledge about the menu, but this was not the case. After selecting our dishes and a bottle of red wine, we waited. The food arrived fairly quickly, but the wine was nowhere to be seen. It’s standard for drinks to be served before the food, so this felt odd. When our starter was cleared, we reminded the waitress about the wine. She looked at us blankly before bringing over the wine list and asking which bottle we had ordered, as she had forgotten. When our main courses arrived, the wine still hadn’t come. Despite having pointed out the Cabernet Sauvignon twice, we were then informed it was out of stock and asked to choose another. I would have expected the waitress to know about the shortage, but we accepted the mistake and asked for two glasses of Pinot Noir, as we were already onto the main course. Having worked in hospitality myself, it is common knowledge that if an issue arises it must be rectified with a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case here. It wasn’t until we had finished our main courses that the wine finally arrived—without an apology or explanation. Throughout the meal, we were also not checked up on - another standard practice of hospitality, which made it even more difficult to address the issue of the wine. When the bill came, I asked the manager to remove the wine charges. Whilst he agreed, I would have expected him to be aware of the situation and offer compensation without me having to request it. As for the food, it was fine but nothing memorable. I had the linguine, and my partner had the lamb. Both were enjoyable enough, but given the £30-40 price point for the main courses, the overall experience didn’t meet expectations. We didn’t bother staying for dessert due to our frustration with the service. What was meant to be a special, romantic meal ended up being a major letdown and waste of money.

I spent 3 wonderful days at The Bear Inn. I stayed in the Pooh Room, which was very comfortable. The breakfasts were served in unique baskets. The meals in the pub were also good and the staff were very friendly. The Inn is also close to Pooh Tea Room, which consists of a gift shop and museum, and the meals are delicious.

I have cycled past here so very very often and never tried the cafe. I should have read the reviews on here first! I stopped for a latte and a cake and the guy working here I am sure does not drink coffee. He was so out of his depth with the coffee machine I ended up with just hot milk!! In the old adage “You only get one chance to make a good first impression” Sorry but this time you failed. Yelling at me when I left that I could not go down and look at the lake as I might upset the fishermen having earlier told me there were no fishermen was not worth debating either. In short if you fish here use the cafe, if you are passing…… Keep on passing.
