I like dining at the Ox. It is an unhurried pleasant experience with a quiet calm atmosphere, and excellent food and drink. The best steak I have had in years!

Delicious food and excellent service

Excellent food and service! We had the roast beef and the roast lamb. Both cooked to perfection with the best Yorkshire puddings made outside of Yorkshire 😂 The pub was full but didn’t deter the atmosphere or service. Will definitely be back another day.

Food was poor, some was over done other parts were cold. Overall was over priced for poor food! Portions were small. 1 meal was steak and ale pie with cold mash and 1 carrot. Not good for the price. Service charge was charged for drinks and food which I think should be reduced to Service charge for food only. Didn't even get a choice on paying it as it was added to the bill. Wouldn't get Service charge if went to the bar. Walking 2 foot with drinks doesn't in my opinion need to be extra charge . All in all was not a good meal especially as it was booked for a birthday celebration. Will not be returning.

Came here with family for Sunday lunch and was not disappointed - the roast was excellent with a choice of meats - too full to eat any dessert but otherwise good service and great staff

Great Atmosphere, really good food and super friendly service. Also dog friendly.

Whole experience was not one to enjoy, was given a gift voucher from my 2 kids, was looking forward to a nice meal/ night out. Unfortunately that was not to be. Prices were high end but product and service were cheap cafe.

Sunday Roast was superb! Definitely worth the drive from London!

Let me start by saying I understand that Christmas is a busy time of year for any business and I take it into consideration when writing this. In a word our experience at the Sussex Ox was fantastic. The only downside was, as stated that due to it being very busy the service was slow, but we did expect this and when we were attended too by the staff they were extremely helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was as you would expect it to be in a nice place like this so all good on that front. With a 6 month old baby in toe we are always apprehensive about baby changing facilities. So I was pleasantly surprised when the staff informed me that there were baby changing facilities in both male and female toilets. That doesn’t always mean they will be good facilities, however the Susses Ox has got it right, clean, tidy and comfortable for baby! Finally the food. If you read my other reviews you will know that I try to be as honest and fair as I possibly can be, but when I say the food was excellent here I really mean that! The BEST food I’ve tasted in a pub, ever. I had the Ox Beef Burger and I could not believed the quality and taste of the meat, which was cooked perfectly! For dessert I had the apple and cinnamon crumble with custard and again it was beautiful! Clearly I am not a Michelin Star judge but if you read the criteria for a star I believe that the Sussex Ox has what it takes!! Well done Sussex Ox you have something very special going!

Another great Sussex pub that's well worth regularly visiting. Seen this place change and remain very popular over 20± years.

The food here is delicious 😋 it's a popular venue, so booking is advised. Food is cooked to order, so there maybe a wait in busy times, but worth it. We visited with family including our young grandchild who was welcomed and accommodated with toys and books to help keep her amused. They cope well with food allergies too Thank you. See you again soon.

We have visited the Sussex Ox a few times previously and thought we'd treat ourselves to lunch there. I had the turkey sausages and my husband had the fish and chips. For dessert, we both had the apple and cinnamon crumble. Both courses were very nice, as usual. I fully appreciate that the current economic climate has pushed prices up, but the meal came to £71, which included an orange juice and coca cola. It also included a "voluntary" 10% gratuity...its hardly voluntary if its already on the bill. Suffice it to say, we won't be visiting again any time soon due to the cost. Lovely food in a lovely venue with good service, but costly.

Great birthday dinner. The service was polite and the pub is cosy. We shared some starters and took advantage of the Friday night steak offer which was good value and we really enjoyed. Really good quality meat as expected.

Our first visit for many years and having browsed the menu online before our booking, we were very disappointed that the lamb pie and hispie cabbage dish with an interesting curry sauce had been removed from the menu when we arrived, and were told that it was due to problems with equipment in the kitchen. Such a shame.

Superb steak from the Ox, so tender and from their own farm. Fabulous food and service, one of our favourites. The pub was busy with locals but it generated a lovely warm atmosphere.

Amazing little surprise! We had a strak for 2 Friday night deal and it was amazing. Atmosphere and service is top notch. Totally recommended.

The front of house/maitre d’ was excellent - knew exactly what was going on and was flexible and experienced enough to make last minute changes to fit us in for lunch. The order was taken swiftly with a smile and the food delivered soon after. The staff were happy and attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious, hot and a good size without being overwhelming. They swiftly moved in as a team to clear a table once diners had left the building and set up so quickly, the next group were able to move in as if no one had been there before.

Absolutely amazing food (a lot sourced from their farm). Very cozy comfy pub with lots of great walks nearby, service is fantastic and always go above and beyond (reunited with forgotten items/ refunding deposit I forgot to mention and settled full bill etc!)

My family and I visited today and had the most wonderful meal! The roasts were out of this world ! The children were catered for very well, too and the service was excellent, definitely recommend it .

We often stop for lunch atThe Sussex Ox whilst walking. We’ve always eaten well and enjoyed the ambience and friendly service. This last occasion was no exception. The herring starters were delicious and we especially enjoyed the venison.

We love it here. This must be our fourth or five visit. It's a firm favourite because the menu is great and the service is brilliant!

Went to the Sussex Ox for Sunday lunch. Was fairly busy,staff were pleasant. Ordered 1x beef roast & 1 Chicken roast, arrived at the table in good time. Plenty on the plate, unfortunately everything so over seasoned; so much salt, if you had that every day, would end up with a heart attack cauliflower overcooked. Beef roast was disappointing as it was covered in fat. Ordered desserts, took over 20 minutes to get to the table. Cheesecake & crumble. Crumble was warmed in the microwave , so would take seconds to heat, cheesecake just needed the be cut & served. I appreciate it was busy. Have been in the past , was much better. Shall eat at the Gun in future. .

Friendly staff, beautiful food. The view is reportedly good, although it was misty the day we visited, and we could see anything. Very comfortable Inn, would definitely go back.

We had Sunday roast the potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, portion size was good. We all had different puddings which were all delicious. Staff were attentive and pleasant. Atmosphere was good too, lots of well behaved dogs. Would highly recommend and will be going back soon

Lovely pub, great food and service

I had the lamb and it the best decision I'd made in a while, perfectly balanced dish I need to go back and enjoy again.

Seemed very expensive for what you got… 22-24£ for roast beef/ lamb… good gluten free options the corn starter was original and delicious,

We had a wonderful meal here. We purposely chose dishes with meat produced on the farm and they did not disappoint. The steak pie was delicious and the mash and veg accompaniments perfectly cooked too. Very conscientious service - had the table set up for the kids with high chair, spacious table etc for our arrival. Overall a very warm experience on a rainy day.

First and last dining experience here - NEVER AGAIN! I can't believe this pub are emailing customers asking for feedback, they certainly can't be reading it. What they need is a manager that has a clue about good hospitality. Unfortunately our dining experience as a birthday treat was a real let down on 20/10/24. We were seated on a very uncomfortable corner bench seat, definitely not enough room for two people that have two legs each. We thought the main dining room must have been closed, but upon leaving could see it was open and had spare tables! Those customers were far luckier than us. The corner was not dirty, but it was dingy, and felt very cramped when another table was occupied between us and the way out. The menu items that we tried were very disappointing. The snack of tempura sweetcorn was not at all what we expected (we expected some kind of fritter). It was three pieces of corn on the cob, each about two inches long that may have gone near a deep frier yesterday. Not at all crispy. Hard to cut into. And the dressing of possibly one crushed hazelnut and some kind of mayonnaise was very sad looking. We had bread and butter which was 2 slices of bread cut in half, not fresh bread rolls. No advice or choice was given by the waiting staff, as they were rushing to take our order. The booking terms, specifically the time limit on your table, is very unwelcoming. This is how I felt from the moment I opened the door to this place, unwelcome. I hoped the cheese course would make up for the experience but it continued to disappoint. I ordered the honey sponge cake that came with blue cheese. This cake was incredibly small. Somewhere smaller than a fairy cake but bigger than a thimble. The cheeses available were nice local cheeses. The blue cheese served with the cake was the same as the main cheese board. So after eating one slice of blue cheese, I couldn't taste the other cheeses. A very poorly put together combination, again the staff offered no advice and the menu is simply not clear enough for guests to know what they are going to get. The dining area we were seated in was very loud, with cutlery being poured into baskets at various points right by where we were sitting - this was so loud and totally unnecessary. The alcohol free bottled beer had a distinct taste of pipe cleaning fluid. I don't know if this was a cheap / bad batch but just one more thing that was bad about this meal. I had such a bad dining experience I would never come back. Even if I was offered a free meal or 100 free meals, I wouldn't waste my time. To any reading this review, there are other lovely pubs in this area, please go anywhere but here. The Sunday roast had nice components. The meat (two of us dining had pork and lamb) was very well cooked. I personally liked the cavalo nero cabbage.

The food was amazing, beautifully cooked roast pork, a beautiful dessert and a great selection of local drinks.

Really disappointed with the Sunday roast dinners.... The meat quality for both lamb and beef was very very poor and the portion sizes were surprisingly small - I had lamb and only got 3 thin and small slices that were fairly dry and lacked flavour. The beef was quite tough and extremely difficult to cut through but the portion size was slightly better. The roast potatoes were also poor - although they appeared crispy they were almost slightly rubbery in the sense of being very difficult to cut through and very very dry on the inside. We also waited a good 25 + mins for our deserts to arrive after they had been ordered but I will say they were great and no one had any complaints with the quality just the wait time. I personally have visited 5/6 times in the past 2 years (never for a Sunday lunch) and this is the first time I've walked away unimpressed and feeling really disappointed

Probably one of the best Sunday Roast’s I’ve had. Top notch!

We have visited the Sussex Ox on many occasions over the past 5-6 years in all weathers and the food has always been fantastic with friendly service and a great atmosphere but I was a little disappointed on this occasion. The crispy fried potatoes arrived in the shape of a square hash brown (?) the fries looked pale and nothing special. The fried onions were mushy and hidden in the burgers cheese sauce and should have been on the side. We had our bread and olives brought to the table and was asked straight away if we were ready to order the rest of our dishes! As we eventually finished and were ready to order I noticed the restaurant had emptied out completely. We spent most of the evening in a completely empty restaurant with no background music. The atmosphere I feel could have been better for sure. I mentioned earlier in the evening that we were celebrating a birthday yet no effort was made and no interest shown. The vibe that used to be in there has gone. I think I will wait for the summer to return before I visit again because the food can be good and the garden atmosphere is the best on a lovely sunny day but for me the indoor restaurant has lost its charm. Also adding a 10% service charge is just cheeky. Sorry chaps💔

Visited for my wife's birthday. £24 for a roast is expensive, so I was expecting good things. Unfortunately, this was not to be. The food was ok but the portion size wasn't very big. Considering roasts have a huge markup, I thought I was in for a decent meal. Service was quite slow, and we were hurried out as the table was "re-booked for 3pm and the other customers were waiting". On top of that, there was a "discretionary 10% service charge". Not very discretionary when it's stuck on the bottom of the bill! Do waiters and waitresses not get paid anymore? Do they rely on "service charges"? With the price of the menu as it was, I'd say the service charge was already factored in to the prices. I went home and made some dinner.

I think it is appalling. £25 for a Sunday roast with 3 thin slices of meat, mainly fat, 1 carrot, a small spoon of cauliflower cheese, 3 half potatoes over cooked and a huge Yorkshire pudding to try and make the plate look impressive. It's disgusting! At that price I expect a chunk of meat. Sunday roasts are overrated!! It's a marketing rip-off. Less food and more profit. And the cheese platter? 3 super thin slices of tasteless cheese! In a countryside pub!! When you see what you get abroad, like Spain, Germany, Italy, France... Why do we get ripped off in Britain?! Why do we accept that! Service was nondescript.

This country pub had been on our list for ages and so as it was my birthday weekend we booked for Sunday lunch. We'd checked the menu before booking so we knew the roast was pricey at £24 for the roast beef. We usually pay between £16 and £20 elsewhere. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was disappointing. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef but I found it very fatty and chewy. There were fewer vegetables than expected, half a carrot, 3 very small, very hard roast potatoes and a pile of kale. The Yorkshire pud was large but mainly soggy. The gravy was delicious. Also elements of the dish were less warm than others. The pub is lovely and had a good drinks menu but we were seated in the bar area and had to listen to staff discussing their rotas at length. Perhaps if we'd been in the main restaurant area or outside we'd have had a better experience. Maybe consider your portion sizes especially the veg. We didn't stay for desert.

Beautiful location and building with extensive gardens and outdoor seating. Staff were attentive and courteous. We had a drink and sandwiches which came with fries and some greenery. My only gripe would be the pricing which was dear. £5.50 for a small, non-alcoholic ginger beer and £6.90 for a pint of local ale seems exorbitant to me?

A mixed experience unfortunately food was excellent but small proportions considering the price, staff excellent, both wet and food was very expensive which we accepted, so no complaint but was shocked at the 10% service charge I didn't realise it was optional as they used an abbreviation for optional, we always tip but certainly didn't think it was worth £9.90, it's a shame as it took the shine of our visit

Sunday Lunch was cold and was badly prepared. It was one of the worst Sunday Lunches I have had this decade! Very surprising considering the standard of the pub and the excellent service received . Very disappointed and won't be going again.

Have to say that this is a strong but average place to eat. Could not rate it higher but have to say it was adequate. Menue had a good range to choose from at realistic pricing. Good range of beers & wines. Location is ideal for a drive out. Just got the feeling this place could be so much better food wise.

Wanted this to be amazing! The setting and the location is so good, everything lined up to be amazing! Unfortunately the Sunday lunch with friends wasn't great. Firstly I have nothing against higher price Sunday lunch, but you need to get what you pay for, so having one carrot and a tiny pile of wilted greens for the veg is pretty poor. Across the four of us we had 2 beef, 1 lamb and 1 chicken Roasts. Wait time for food was around an hour.. The chicken roast was so dry my friend had to ask for more gravy to make it edible. The lamb was, unfortunately, 80% fat and gristle with very little meat to account for the price. Beef was tasty. Very tasty. Main issue is I asked for mine to be as pink as possible and Unfortunately no effort was made for that to be the case. No problems with drinks and the staff apart from the very slow service for food with no update. I hope this improves cause being as good as you guys are this is an easy fix

Service was excellent as usual but food was so disappointing. Much smaller portions than usual, so seemed expensive for what we hot. Lamb rump was fatty and VERY salty. We have been there numerous times and always enjoyed it. Best bit of the evening was the sunset over the Downs.

One of the best pubs in Sussex. The food is always great (particularly their steaks and Sunday roasts). Good selection of drinks; whether you're into wine, ale or beer. Best of all, the staff are brilliant (so helpful and accommodating). And the views are also wonderful.

Great service and lots of vegan options. Food was good, service was nice. Garden was lovely to sit in. It seems the vegan roast doesn't have any subs to make up for the lack of Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese. If it did, I'd give 5*.

This pub is in a lovely setting and we have visited many times over the years. But what puts me off is the unwelcoming atmosphere from who I would describe as the landlady. This has happened before but we thought we would give it another try. After walking in the main door (because you can’t just walk into the garden anymore) we were met with a look that was what are you doing in the pub! The usual you have to wait at least 45 minutes for food etc etc. The unwelcoming atmosphere is a major put off, so disappointing and it’s not a one off!

Ordered mushroom burger and beef sausage with smoked tomatoes, both very poorly presented and lacked in flavour, very disappointing.

Visited Sussex with friends and found this gem on Google. The food was brilliant with a good selection of classy pub food. If we are ever back down that way will definitely be on the list.

Lovely pub and surroundings and friendly and efficient staff. The food is expensive which we don't mind if we feel that we are getting good value but the quality of the food didn't match the price we paid. Presentation and quality of ingredients is very much leaning towards "pub grub". The starters were ok but the dry ribs and salad with a few potatoes is not what my husband and I expected for the price for a main course. A few stingy bits of meat didn't justify the price. Desserts were ok. All in all the food and menu choices just didn't match the lovely countryside spot we were in!

Excellent find. Definitely coming back here again. We came down from London for a few days and found this pub for lunch on Google maps. We had the set menu lunch 2 courses for £20 each. Really tasty. Atmosphere was a bit quiet but that was fine by us and it was a Monday lunchtime.

Went to the Ox for lunch as it was Mum's 80th the day before. It was a lovely day so sitting outside on the terrace looking out on the downs with a cold drink & some fantastic food was right on the money. As always the food, service and drinks were first class. We will be back soon!

Amazing atmosphere in the middle of beautiful country side of East Sussex. Fantastic food. All from local sources of meat and plants. Good selection of wines. Friendly and helpful staff. I’m very impressed. Really recommend this place for dinner.

Lovely spot, great service, but the food was a bit disappointing. Courgette flower tempura starter was just a soggy mess, but tasty. Beef sunday lunch was nice, but came with a flabby Yorkshire pudding, which they replaced when i asked.

Sunday lunch booked. Table on terrace which was lovely. My fish and chips £20 was awful thinnest piece of dry, stale fish ever covered in mountains of batter, chips good.made a complaint and £20 taken off bill, thank you. My sons roast beef was less than average, flat Yorkshire pudding and lack of fresh veg, very dull and certainly not worth the money. His pudding came with strawberries and meringues, maybe two small strawberries cut up and five miniscule bits of meringue that looked as though they came out of a packet. Service was very slow and the nice waitress apologised. Such a shame as a lovely position on the downs. Never again and will not recommend.

I found this wonderful pub when I travelled to the area. I ordered the burger and the polenta cake. The meat was delicious and was perfectly cooked. Chips were so tasty and I could have ordered more. The service was amazing and staff very attentive and polite. The food made me think maybe I should definitely relocate!

We had a pleasant dinner here. Traditional British cuisine. The food was very tasty and well prepared. We booked a table for 20h30 and were rushed to do the order as apparently the kitchen was about to close. The pub has a patio with a nice view. Recommended.

Lovely location, great food and service was good too

My wonderful girlfriend introduced me to this place and if I could I would eat here every day. Powerful land here, ancient land. Great food, locally sourced. You have to book in advance on weekends and it is easy to get turned away if you come on impulse - it has happened to me multiple times. I wish I was best friends with the chef. I don't begrudge them that I've twice driven forty minutes to be told there's no table. I still love it and will continue to love it. yum and friendly staff. And just round the corner from The Long Man of Wilmington.

Disappointing compared with previous visit. The menu has been reduced a lot and some portions were quite small. Don't care for food being served on boards. Style over substance. Some dishes were good but it was very mixed, whereas the food was excellent, with good portions, when we visited in the summer of 2022. The bread was very dry and butter topped with salt wasn't great. We do appreciate that costs are much higher than 2 years ago and we're used to making allowances for that. I think the fact there were fewer customers despite it being a Friday night, is a bit of a reflection on the quality. The weather probably didn't help but even so it was disappointing overall.

Down narrow winding country lane cross your fingers nothing coming other way , But definitely worth the experience a nice old building with good parking, staff were friendly the food was good maybe a bit on the expensive side but I understand all locally sourced so perhaps the reason

Myself and my husband were very much looking forward to a Sunday Roast at The Sussex Ox. We arrived at 12.45pm, our table was booked for 1.00pm. We were seated immediately and offered drinks. We placed our food order and weren't served our meals until nearly 1.40pm. The meals themselves where very tasty, but meagre portions and the roast potatoes were more like scraps than potatoes, four tiny little pieces. The waiting staff were inattentive, though there were many on duty. It was very obvious that some of them definitely didn't want to be there. We were not asked if we would like to order more drinks. Desserts were ok. The ice cream was lovely, but you can't really go wrong with that. The apple crumble cake was very disappointing. We had to call members of the waiting staff over at least 3 times to ask for drinks, the bill and to actually pay the bill. We left disappointed and hungry. In fact, we stopped off at The Star in Alfriston for a cream tea. Much better service and value for money. Would never go back.

Five of us booked in and had a meal tonight, initially impressed with the place, menu very limited and pretty boring. No fish, only one veggie choice ( a cauliflower thing that was dry, uninteresting and pretty awful). Asked for a gravy or similar, No offered a small pot of mayo. Three had shepherds pie that in fact was steak and mash pie and was small but good. Just a small bowl of a dark cabbage. Why no fresh veg from local English fields ? Pudding was small & stodgy with small scoop ice cream. Bill with beer was £202.42 They added a service charge which I totally disagree with. We thought we’d discovered a gem but sadly none of us want to go again,

Awful and embarrassing! We visited the Sussex Ox a few days ago with some friends having been several times before. We ordered drinks and gave our food order. After 40 minutes no sign of any food, no explanation, no apology, no enquiry, even though both staff members were passing our table every few minutes. When we enquired about the food they said they would check. After another 10 minutes they can back and said there had been a mistake and that our order was being dealt with. Again no apology and want to recognise there was a problem, in fact the reaction from the staff was very care free and rude. One member of staff who took our order didn't even engage and made excuses why she could not speak with us. After another 20 minutes no food had arrived and as we had been there for 90 minutes already decided we had no choice but to leave. I can honestly say i have never been treated in such a way by anyone in the 'hospitality industry' what is any business with customers so you need to look after them and care how you treat them. We will not be returning and i hope this post warns other customers to stay away.

Great atmosphere and gardens, we came lunchtime, not busy. Asked for some cheesy chips to go with our drink, we were told as there was none grated we could not have any !!! This would have taken no longer than a minute to cut some off and grate it . Sound like they will cater for dinners but not snack ! Also the place only had a few customers, don't know what the problem was. No fork offered with our plain chips, and no serviettes to use .

Having emailed feedback to the Sussex Ox directly twice now and having had no response you can read my thoughts as they’re not bothered seemingly. We dined in the evening to celebrate Father’s Day. We were all rather disappointed with the quality and presentation of the food. Notably, we had the strong impression that it had been prepared and cooked for lunch service and kept warm all day. The roast potatoes were overly hard on their outers, the roast chicken was dry, the Yorkshire puddings could have filled potholes and the gravy was extremely salty and beefy which didn’t go well over the chicken and the cauliflower had lost much of its texture and taste. With the pudding, the rhubarb in the pane cotta was wooden in taste. From the menu two of four starter choices were unavailable which was a shame. Service was polite and professional, no complaints there at all, although notably at no point were we asked whether we enjoyed the food. Perhaps if we’d been able to get a table at lunchtime the experience would have been quite different but kept warm and reheated food is not acceptable especially when paying a good chunk of money but we left the pub with a disappointing Father’s Day experience.

Stopped off after seeing the sign on the A27. So glad we did. Warm welcome and great food! Definitely worth the short diversion!

Having heard great things about The Sussex Ox, we gave it a try on our recent visit to the area. It wasn't bad but certainly not as good as its reputation indicates. Starters were nice, but of the Mains: a) The Chips in my wife's Fish and Chips were significantly over cooked. b) The Ox Liver Dish would have been better if the Mash Potato was Hot rather than luke warm A place like Sussex Ox should be applying better standards than this in my opinion.

Really delicious food - had the crispy lamb starter, chips and spanakopita, all were delicious. Nice local ales, quick service, beautiful location and scenery.

Came for a lunch time gathering, table booked and allocated outside but with the inclement weather we opted to go indoors and forego the stunning view of the downs. Our host found us a little corner spot, there was some fussing over the seating but we finally settled in. Waitress popped over shortly thereafter and drinks ordered...local Long Man brews on tap or Harvey's...went for the obvious choice of Long Man. Menu has an interesting selection of pub classics but given the Gastro pub twist. Dishes between £18-£25 pound or there abouts. Ordered the Lambs Liver, most of the rest of the party went with the trout, fish and chips or burgers. Food arrived after a while, and oh dear...whilst it tasted great, it wasn't what I'd term 'hot'. The trout and samphire looked amazing and no complaints there, although it was recommended by the waitress to order a side of potatoes which everyone did. Burger was just a burger. Again, not hot. My feelings on this place was that whilst accommodated, I didn't feel welcomed, whilst the food was great, plate warmers might help if spending a long time 'plating up'...or was this just an off day? (Edit: looks like on other reviews, the temperature is a thing. Also, just noticed the random chip that was free with my meal on top in the photo)

It was hard to disifer some of the descriptions of the dishes. The cooking was good but we were expecting "crispy lamb" to be more like burnt ends than a rissole texture. Very nice pub with a beautiful fragrent garden. The trout was very nice too. Service friendly and efficient.

We cycled over, had a great meal in the garden. Staff were friendly and terrace was a nice place to sit and eat.

Lovely country pub set in beautiful countryside. I was a little disappointed with the menu by the relatively narrow choice of mains but the Ox burger I had was top class. I had the apple cake dessert which was a bit underwhelming. To my mind it was rather insubstantial and bland. What's wrong with a decent apple pie and custard?

An idyllic country pub. On a beautiful day in May we sat outside and admired the views, whilst being served excellent food by enthusiastic staff. Definitely returning in future.

Lovely welcoming pub. Sadly we had a very poor Sunday lunch. We had chose and it was chewy and tasteless. Vegetables weren’t great either. Will try again on a weekday. Sunday service seems very hard to sustain at good quality.

Great little gem tucked away overlooking the downs

Popped in for a vastly overcharged pint on cycle ride. Can see why was the only customer. Suspect they charge the 'we got away with it in covid so let's carry on' service charge on even drinks. Nice garden and views though

Lovely Sunday Roast, great service, definitely try the smoked tomatoes and house made ricotta for a starter if it’s on the menu- you won’t be disappointed!

Roast Potatoes tasted like frozen ones , Food not very hot . Doubly the price of other pubs which serve better food . Tiny amount of substandard veg and the top of the pork belly was not crispy . Feeling extremely ripped off , refused to stay for more drinks or desssert and the service charge is ridiculous

The standard has really dropped. We have visited the Sussex Ox alot over the years and was once our preferred pub to eat at. But on our recent visit our burgers were so overcooked you could hardly cut though them and we were both ill after eating them. It felt like they were yesterdays burgers that had been reheated. I don't think we will be returning to eat again which is such a shame as it's a stunning setting.

Burnt burger, so hard I could hardly cut it. Waited so long for a replacement that my partner had finished his fish and chips. The manager couldn't stop grinning which was trying given the standards of the kitchen. The second burger looked OK but this time the chips were barely cooked and I'd lost my appetite. He comped the bill but didn't seem to get how badly sending out a cremated burger reflected on the pub. We won't eat there again. Pity as its a nice place with a lovely garden.
