We were looking for a good fish & chips. We found Ye Old Restaurant & chip shop, devices to give it a try and it was just what we were looking for. The fish was delicious, light crispy batter and the chips were fresh cut, cooked perfectly. We met another couple who travel one & a half hours by bus just to go there! That means something! We really recommend it! Busy take away & Great friendly service as well.

Best Fish and Chip shop in Gloucester for 84 years strong. Both Fish and chips cooked perfectly. Service is great and helpful, the decor and atmosphere is classic and comfortable.

They don't accept card payments. The food is amazing

Disgusting prices. 2x Small Fish and Chips, 1x buger and chips, 3 soft drinks. £53.00. The size of fish was indeed small, in fact very small. I have never been served a smaller piece of fish in any restauraunt in my life. The ordering, service etc was very challenged, in fact would hardly call it service. Payment was also very, very difficult. Attempted to pay by card but it proved that their machine was not capable of acceptingpayments. Matbe that cash is better ????? for them. !!!!!!!!!!!!! to administer ???!!!???!!! DO NOT, repeat , DO NOT go anywhere near the toilets . They are disgusting inappearance, cleanliness and smell horrific. My daughter tells me the Ladies was in identical condition. I appreciate only too well that prices have risen ( and portions have decreased) during recent months but this restaurant is a joke. They are taking the mickey( to be polite) Displeased Pensioner and Family.

First time sitting in the restaurant and I would come back again and recommend anyone to pop in and enjoy the food selection of drinks 100% wot pass this on to people for sure

Good fish and chips but far to much batter on the Fish and the mushy peas were soggy and only Luke warm.

Lunchtime meal .....made to feel very welcome....friendly guys in there....very dog friendly ..even giving our boy a sausage and a nice big bowl of water. Food was very very nice. .......lovely piece of haddock .....fish cake also lovely.....chips were amazing.... nice cold drinks on this very hot day .....10/10 for all our food.. Charming little restaurant Will be back. .......thanks for a lovely experience 😁

Didn’t get many chips with my fish

Fish great, chips could be better. Expensive. No signage for the toilets in the restaurant upstairs. Doesn't take £50 notes. When the bill was £36.00 for the two of us this just does not make any sense.

I said I’d leave a tip but just eat don’t seem to have that function. Sorry mate

I went for take away fish & chips. Our third time. I hardly ever carry cash but they have taken my card as payment twice before. On this occasion they refused my card! They didn’t want my custom! They said it was the managers decision to not allow card payments for takeaway transactions. Upstairs is allowed to use the card machine only! They have lost us now. We won’t be returning. We were getting to be quite regular visitors too!

I have read the reviews by others and the responses by management but as we were visiting my son and wanted to try local fish and chips we decided to try here. My recommendation is dont! I will be slated by management but I've been eating fish and chips for over 50 years and it is one of my favorites and this was by far the worst I have ever had. The fish was tasteless, it wasn't frozen it was just poor quality, had skin on and of the 5 portions ordered only one didn't have bones in it, yes fish comes with bones but a good fish and chip shop doesn't serve it this way. Very disappointed as I had hoped the other review were wrong, actually I think they were generous. We've been to 2 other fish and chip restaurants and take aways this week and the difference was night and day!

Excellent as a!ways. Only issue was we were sent curry sauce rather than the mushy peas we ordered but no problem.

Absolutely shocking customer service pig ignorant doesn’t start to cover it and I believe this was the owner. Good is bang average and prices are extortionate! £1.70 for a can absolute rip off. I will never set foot in this place again

Quality food and quick delivery

Best tasting fish we have had for a very long time and the batter was crunchy. Highly recommend this restaurant good value and excellent food.

Absolutely appalled by the low power service and low power food was not worth the £62.90 bill in any way I think that’s the most expensive vodka and Coke at £13.80 for a double I will add a photo below of just how shocking the bill was For two people two drinks and two meals absolutely specially this day and age did not live up to the hyper being the best chip shop. Don’t think it is by miles.

Food was good, but delivery took a long time. Driver delivered in about 7mins once he got the food. however it took over an hour for a driver to be selected/get to the restaurant.

There’s a busy takeaway on the ground floor so ascending the stairs took us to the atmospheric seating area. White washed walls with dark brown timber make for a cosy traditional space. But most importantly the food was very good, with the fish dishes plus chips very tasty and satisfying. With a cool refreshing beer. Staff were pleasant and helpful and very efficient.

Dear ye olde owner Your food is very goood and PERFECT!! The service was veeeeryyyy LOVELY and respectful!!! The batter was very fresh and the fish was very fresh. The chips was tasting like it was served in heaven!!! The place was very nostalgic and very cozy!!! I really suggest everyone to come to this fish and chip shop which got 2020 best top 10 which got 4th place!!!! Thanks for your perfect and great restaurant!!!

Lovely old building with great history. Waited a while for meal to be served as the policy is to serve the downstairs takeaway customers first. Why they have speakers blaring out 1960s hits in such a beautiful setting, I cant comprehend. We had to ask staff to turn the racket down twice. Even then it was annoying. However, on the plus side the meal was first class when it came. Great fish n' chips. Just sort out the noisy music.

decided it was time for a change. first time ordering from here, Read the reviews so thought we would give it a try and we were not disappointed. food was on time and still hot on arrival, and was absolutely lovely. so happy we changed. will definitely bring ordering form here again.

I would say the food is just as good as any other fish and chip shop, let's remember we're talking about fried potatoes here. I ordered a regular chips, sausage and curry sauce to take away and was charged over £10 for the privilege. I know prices have increased recently but am I wrong to consider this widely excessive. I just wish I had the nerve to laugh and walk out. And they tried to tell me they were 'cash only' until I said I would only pay by card....then a card machine appeared, as if by magic.

Firstly, I will say that the fish and chips were good. However the portions were minute. Ordered a large fish and chips, but the fish was tiny. Was told it was large, not many chips either. When I left, the takeaway counter didn't have anything as small as the portion I was served. Also wanted another £1 for a small sachet of tarteare sauce.

The olde fish and chip shop in Gloucester in fact the best ever. The staff are very friendly. If I am in town and fancy fish and chops I would not go anywhere else. Whether You dine in or take away the experience is great

The BEST fish and chip shop in gloucester so close to town which is so handy for people to pop in and have a snack or a full course meal. Reasonable prices. Staff go above and Beyond. Rebecca one of the staff who works there is lovely. Always smiling and giving people the best customer service. Have a lovely restaurant upstairs where you can sit in and have food if you don’t want to takeaway.

I agree with a number of the reviews about the lack of quality of the food here based on our experience of a takeaway this evening.. chips were quite greasy and soggy and fish was also disappointing and most likely re-fried/ re heated as others have said. Battered sausages were better as cooked fresh to order. Sadlyi I wouldn't visit again or recommend

Food was piping hot, and the fish and sausages were well cooked but the chips were unfortunately not up to the usual very high standard. I'm sure this time it was just a minor aberration.

Have been coming here for a number of years and have never been let down by the quality of food on offer. The staff have always been friendly and the service is excellent.

If I could give this plaice a zero I would. The thinnest chips I've ever had the misfortune of trying. The batter on the fish was rock hard like it had been refried from lunch time. The fish was dry inside DEFINITELY NOT FRESHLY COOKED. When I rang to complain was called a liar. Shocking customer service. Try mermaid fish shop on kingsholm road it is cheaper and by far a better chippy. Another lie can you not tell the truth you personally have not been in that business for 85 years you bought the business and are riding on the tail of previous owners who adhered to a higher standard and were not greedy. You or your staff were rude and to say I was lying and expecting me to bring the food back in the rain to prove it with a young child is terrible I didn't want a refund or to swap I was informing you about what you already knew you refried the fish because you didn't want to waste or lose profit. The only place it was fit for was the bin . I would never step foot in such a disrespectful business again.

Me and my frend who i have been friends with for over 50 years came in for a late lunch on March 5th we were bth very plesased with the food and service i had the steak and kidney pie chips and mushy peas my friend had the fish and chips with mushy peas

The fish and chips did not live up to the hype. The batter was incredibly greasy and the chips were not that great. I dug the fish out of the batter and it was pretty much tasteless. Very disappointing. A waste of money.

Great chips best in Gloucester

We were drawn in by the banner outside claiming Best Fish and Chop Shop of 2020 but it’s clearly gone down hill a lot since then! We sat inside and the service was really slow, and unwelcoming. The food was awful, tasteless, greasy and very expensive. Chips tasted like they had been reheated, fish very greasy and the sausage looked uncooked - very pale. Apparently the ownership has changed since 2020 and if that’s true it’s rather misleading to maintain the claim.

Amazing ordered 2 cod, chips, peas and curry sauce. Came within 30 mins all hot and was delicious. They even included an extra fish with a note saying “extra fish included as not normal size fish as normal.” Which was amazing so had plenty and big portions. Highly recommend!

Very disappointed with the small fish and chips. The service was OK. Food was cold. The price was expensive in the restaurant. Had to pay extra for tartar sauce. I when here regular as a child. The food was great then. Piping hot. Don't think I will go back again.

I have been here before and had good fish and chips as a takeaway, as it was pouring with rain we decided to eat inside in the restaurant. The service was fair and the fish and chips good though quite small portions. The dink however was extortionate, £4.80 for a can of John Smiths bitter is ridiculous. All in all always good fish and chips but fish, chips, curry sauce with a can of beer at over £23 is just too expensive I will visit again but only as a takeaway.

Best fish & chips in Gloucester!

Not bad, but not excellent either. I had fish and chips, although the chips were a little to thin for my liking, were more like large fries. The fish was ok, nothing special and certainly not worthy of being considered the best in Gloucester - Other disappointing elements was the "robotic" service and CASH ONLY option 🤔

Got into the restaurant bit, sat down and noticed how overpriced everything was. Coffee was nearly £4 and it tasted burnt and watered down. Ordered the faggots and they tasted horrendous, like they were microwaved and then left out. I couldn't even force myself to eat it. 2 people costed nearly £50.

A large chip costing over £4 barely enough to feed 2 they weren't crispy, they were floppy and stale tasting like they had rather been hanging around or reheated from lunch time, such a disappointment as used to come out of my way to get nice chips from here didn't find it particularly friendly service either.

This fish and chip shop is certainly old fashioned not accepting card. We’ve been here for take away a few times and every time they have accepted card! But always say the prefer cash but now only accept cash!! Seems dodgey to me. These days not many people carry cash around!! Definitely won’t be returning.

its my first visit to England, London & Gloucester. Its the best fish & chips I have tried so far. I have eaten less than 8 different fish & chips within London, this is the best within my limited experience. highly recommend fish roe. my wife prefers the cod. both are great.

We had two haddock fish suppers. The service was great and very good value for money. Would definitely visit again if ever in the area.

I went with no cash, only card. last month no problems took my payment on card machine. went there last night to be told they haven't taken card payments since covid. well I can show my bank statement with card payment made. I left and went to Mermaids up the road. what a lovely chip shop,takes card payments. won't go back to ye olde chippy. Mermaids for me now. easier parking too.
