Visiting Gloucester we called in yesterday morning when the cafe wasn’t open just to take some photos outside but the owner came out and was so friendly and let me take photos inside and took the time to give us the fascinating history of the cafe and area. Hospitality was so good we will be back to try the food and listen to music!

A very interesting place. Like everything in England, it has its own mysterious history shrouded in mystery. Very tasty food, great variety of cider, huge portions. The interior is incomparable, the staff is attentive but not intrusive

Our meal at Cafe Rene was fantastic: ciders (berries and cherries), Guinness, and the delicious Steak & Ale Pie! The atmosphere is cozy and the team is super welcoming. Definitely visit Cafe Rene and order the Steak & Ale Pie! (Cool detail: the ceiling is all bottles)

Lovely friendly atmosphere, and on the night I was there had the mix if reggae at the main bar and rock in the cellar bar . Good prices and lovely staff, even the security are lovely

Best pub/restaurant in Gloucester

We came here today for the first time for my partners 25th birthday and WOW it did not disappoint. The food was incredible and was more than what we expected. Nice little seating area with a really cool ceiling. Staff are lovely and helpful and also very welcoming. We will definitely be coming again as we were extremely impressed.

Food (fish and chips} pleasant and inexpensive. Seats not very clean-spills not cleaned up at the start of lunch session. and a little scruffy They need to review table cleanliness. When i asked for more tartar sauce I was told I would have to pay extra for it which I have never experienced at any restaurant before. Service otherwise good

The music is good here. Certain staff members can occasionally be snooty. I haven't tried the food. Price for a soft drink is good.

Brilliant cafe in a good location has live music most weekends. Good location for a beer and snacks with good outdoor seating Drinks and food are fairly priced and well worth a visit We went here to listen to some old music band dogs are allowed on the premise

Our 1st time visiting and we came back 3 times. The food is outstanding and the entertainment was fantastic. Very friendly and would highly recommend.

I loved this bar down a side street. We had a cask ale on our way into town. It's popular and full of character inside but we managed to grab a table outside.

Lovely pub down a passage with picnic tables outside. There were 3 cask ales, all Green King (not the generally dull standard IPA,) -- they were ok, but we did find them a little dull, and a little warm. But - well worth going, lovely place.

Absolutely loved this place. Atmosphere and ambience was superb. A real gem of a place and the food was even better. Lamb curry was lovely and spicy. Really worked for me. Budvar was great too; went very well with the hot curry.

Why at big day at renegade festival why are not more toliets open and available bet its to do with bit more cash less in profits department Well tonight had good meal with sarah Harleyquinn both had good meals ......however i believe it may be haunted my glass of lovely dark beer without prompt flew off table both me and partner amazed this wierd event happend ............but bet i get charged All round gud As long as you don't go for a meal Honestly the chef s are not fit to work in a back alley crack den . After trying to find a place to eat regularly, with my partner 5 times tried to give fair trial . And on all 5 occasions Ryan and Nathan the slop jockeys as chefs a insult FAILED to serve two sirloin steak meals correct .when asking for a rare stake for me ,and medium to well done . For the medium to well done had to be sent back every time and on one occasion three times and still FAILED. Honest opinion they need sacking as now from spending £average 135.00.so £6348.00 loss over year Will not eat here again! Advise you don't Even staff complain how lack there attitude is . Management failed to call next day to offer compensation Drinks n social good along live music 🎶 Sadly tried again to eat two steaks orderd . This steak was supposed to be med to well Done Retrain your staff in kitchen . Eating out is a luxury so seems only fair you staff are trained to serve as requested. Paid full price to not Be accused of seeking cheap Bill !!!

Only comment was a member of staff needed more people skills and not seeming as if shes gonna throw ur drink or food over u she needs better skill and not seem offish 2 customers and more friendly other wise meals drinks service and food was well presented hot but think it needs a little more variety in the menuxx

Friendly staff; big portions and lovely food (you do get a full sandwich!). Coffee is nice but could be hotter. Don't know why it's not busier, but definitely worth the visit! Gluten free and vegetarian options are available.

Great little venue hidden away from the city. Considering it was a Tuesday evening the restaurant was almost fully booked. We were served our mains and drinks as expected but then we were never offered any more drinks or desserts which is a shame as it was almost too late when we realised as we would have jumped at the chance of desserts.

Fantastic find. First time in Gloucester and we stopped in a couple pubs along the way... simply typing 'pub' in Google didn't reveal Café René but after typing 'pub lunch' into the search bar (because of a real craving for a fish finger sandwich) we found this place. Gorgeous interior, with a brick well in the middle of the entrance(!), and really friendly staff. This pub seems to offer it all. The food was ace, fantastic thick cut sandwich with a dressed salad and the model thick cut triple cooked chips... Plus, they host live music. They told us about a festival happening tomorrow and DJs right into the night, then a jam session on Sunday. Happy days!

Good music and a lively atmosphere. The decorations are very cool and interesting. Very drunk people that can make you feel a bit uncomfortable at times but that's probably not a permanent feature. One man got a taxi for his dog at 1am.

Interesting, eclectic place! Quiet when we got there so maybe we didn't get the best of the atmosphere. Ok range of drinks. Didn't have any food.

Had a wonderful time for my birthday. Cant fault the food. Squash wellington was very tasty.

Went for Sunday dinner and although all tables were booked the staff found us a table with no issues in the main bar. The food was delicious and plentiful and I would highly recommend Cafe Rene. The staff are always friendly and polite. A very niche bar for Gloucester but one that will stand the test of time.

Popped in this afternoon, the staff moved tables and chairs for us to sit down 👍 I really can't remember such great service anywhere. I didn't eat but have seen the menu and I will definitely be back. What a wonderful place!

Only popped in for a drink. They manage to sync their restaurant service with the pub drinking environment. Warm and welcoming.

We found this unusual restaurant/bar hidden away in the centre of Gloucester and as it was a Monday evening there were not many customers but we had a lovely evening here. The food was very good and plentiful and the service could not be faulted. Unfortunately we had so much for our main course that there was no room for dessert!! Beware if you want a quiet evening make sure there is no live music or alternately if you want to let your hair down check out the live bands on offer. Either way give Café Rene a try you won’t be disappointed.

Really nice. Spacious, interesting decor, great location, really nice helpful staff, quality for ya money, totally worth a visit. Park in Eastgate shopping centre for easy access to Gloucester City Centre. Wheel chair friendly.

Very impressed with the food this afternoon (2pm) . Everything was so tasty! You could taste each individual vegetable. Sad they don't do cocktails..... but the Gin was good haha. Nice quirky little place. Warm and cozy with good music. Update.... we went again on a Sunday and i had a FANTASTIC vegetarian roast . My partner just had to have steak again as it was so good.

Typically go here for the Dance Conspiracy nights. Decent crowd, good music and friendly promoter. Excellent night out.

Wrote a review a few weeks ago and saying how nice it was, But after being really let down on Thursday night, My steak which was supposed to be M/W done came out rare, It then took ages to get 2nd time, My partner finished his meal, When I got my steak again chips over cooked and steak was really chewy, Couldn't eat the meal, Not happy.. So friends booked in for a meal here and we got invited and again was awful, A free pudding was offered as not been able to eat meal a chocolate brownie was chosen, Well it was burnt and very bland, A member of staff tried it and also said it wasn't good so we left very disappointed, When owner was informed he said nothing just walked away and have now decided will only use for drinking from now on as the food is no good.. So having come back because family and friends book here each time its still been bad. Tonight 14/7/22 we decided to try again but this was the worst the steak was awful, even the staff said they keep getting complaints from others about the food, Apparently Ryan and Nathan don't like being chefs and seriously don't want to be there said the staff, I feel so disappointed as wanted to be perfect instead I had to buy a sandwich from tesco next door, I will never recommend this place, Only things good about it are the selection of drinks and the two lovely staff Kat and Angelo, Very upset with tonight.. They said they would get bar manager to ring me today 15/7/22 and he didn't so even more disappointed.. Thought not been for a while and try again but it was still just as bad on 19/11/22 portions are smaller and put prices up, so thought won't have steak again as they can't get it right so had chicken, Leek, Ham pie well the puff pastry just evaporated I had 4 tiny bits of chicken 1 cube of ham and a small bit of Leek oh and 8 chips, my partner fish and chips he said weren't that good. Its a shame as used to be an amazing place to eat.. We don't eat here still but do like to go for drink here. Staff are always welcoming and friendly and now they have opened the bar out its so much bigger and easier to get to the bar.. Talking to one of the staff last night 02/02/2023 they welcoming any new suggestions. Did notice that they have a specials board in the restaurant which did look nice. We carry on going there as nice atmosphere and do good live music. Hopefully one day we will go back to having food. Still recommend just for pleasant warm pub.. So went in last night 14/02/2023 and booked in the restaurant having had bad meals before was a bit weary of eating, but booked in as partners parents like it there.. Service was really good and when we all received our meals they were hot and really lovely.. 2 had ham eggs and chips and both were satisfied, 1 had fish and chips and again was happy. I had fish pie and it was really nice to get a fish pie in there that actually had fish in it and was hot and the mash potatoe on top was really nice and cooked properly.. So I definitely have to say absolutely lovely food so will go again and have a meal.. Having had a nice meal last week decided we would go back this week so last night 23/02/2023 we discovered that they don't know the meaning of consistency the mash on top fish pie was anaemic and the veg was not cooked so raw it squeaked in my mouth, Gammon was pink and tough, the steak that was ordered M/W was M/R but more rare than medium.. Safe to say we have called time on eating there which is a shame as used to be so good for food.. So have been back couple of times after saying wouldn't be each time has been improvement have been told that the chef who taken over wanted to make improvements and have to say the consistency has been brilliant.. Went again today 08/05/2023 I had chicken, Leek and bacon pie and my partner had Steak and ale pie both cooked lovely and both really hot, chips really nice and veg.. Due to consistency will go again.. Really good and well done to the chef.. Went tonight 22/06/2023 both had pies I had chicken, leek and bacon and my partner had steak both really enjoyed. Service was lovely.

Gloucesters hidden jem. Really nice food and a great selection of Ales and Rum. What more do you need. The burgers are great. Probably the best in the Shire. The Caribbean Curry is dam fine as well.

Best bar restaurant in Gloucester. Always welcoming and friendly, great selection of beverages. Food is always top class.

A lively bar, we did book a table in the restaurant but as it was not busy choose to eat in the bar area. You had to order the food and drinks at the bar and pay immediately but that was not an issue for us. The service was quick and the food really tasty, great portion size and very good value for money. It was not fancy food but it was the best meal we had during our stay in Gloucester. I get the impression the place gets really busy later in the evening as the band did not turn up until 9pm as we were leaving. If we visit Gloucester again will certainly visit here again and have a meal.

Had a great night after the Rugby game chilling & drinking hard till 3pm

Xmas meal with friends. Turned up 5 mins early and was told to get off table as we are early. So had to sit somewhere else for 5 mins whilst they made the table. Then when I asked if they had a specific drink at the bar the barman sighed and said no, so I asked if they had chambord to put into Prosecco but instead of telling me what they did have he said “we have what you can see” all annoyed like I was asking him to do something outside of his job. Wasn’t happy with the answer that I gave which was well I can’t see everything, that’s why I’m asking? So he then actively tried to not serve me from that point onwards and it took me over 20 mins each time to get a drinks, just always serving the person next to me, although he’d seen me standing there the whole time. The waitress wouldn’t ever say please or thank you and just held her hand out without saying a word to my wife, wanting my wife to hand her the plate from the table, which my wife didn’t, if she has asked she would have happily. It just felt like we were a burden the whole night and were stopping them from doing their job, whereas we didn’t actually ask for anything, this was all off their own back. Strange atmosphere, and strange attitude from the staff. Very unlikely I’d go back, although the food itself was very good.

We called in here just by chance on our way back from an event. Four of us had drinks around 10 pm. The atmosphere was amazing. Had a good sing along 😁

I enjoyed this old pub with lots of atmosphere & enjoyed seeing customers dressing up in their Christmas jumpers & hats. Food hot & all served at the save time. Only downside its freezing in there most people left their hats & coats on.

Delicious home made food at great prices my second visit to Gloucester and came here for food the first time it was so good I came back again! Both times went for the chefs special and was mightily impressed on both occasions! If I visit Gloucester again this will be where I’m going for food once again! Absolutely champion! Fabulous restaurant, we had booked to avoid disappointment. Food fabulous, a chap who said it was his first day looked after us, and did so very well. 10 out of 10 and thank you.

Food was lovely, think the service was a bit poor considering it was a quite night think they just got a bit too relaxed and forgetful.

Went in for lunch.. seated immediately by a lovely girl .. ordered a cod and chips and a pie and chips .. both on the table in 15 to 20 minutes and both lovely.. only issue would be that the coffee was only instant and not great.

Love cafe Rene but usually come here for some live music in the alternative region. A little shame when it's r and b etc but no Biggie good pub and good atmosphere any how. I always enjoy Rene, the clientele is friendly.

Had a lovely meal and drinks here with my partner, unfortunately as we were leaving was followed out and asked if we had paid, went to the bar to show staff that it had been paid and taken out of my account (paid by card) was given no apology was just told he would take my word for it, disappointing service given that we had just spent nearly £40 for a meal and drinks, will not be returning.
