Spent the weekend in Brassington and popped in every day to The Gate. Absolutely fantastic place; great cask ale at £4 a pint, brilliant atmosphere and the locals were really welcoming. Couldn't be more dog friendly- staff brought round lamb and pork for the dogs in the pub on Sunday. Ate in the pub on Saturday- food was brilliant. Would absolutely recommend.

We had a week in the Peak District and came here for dinner one night. A lovely old pub with real fires. Only about 5 or 6 tables for eating as it’s very small, so booking advised. Decent menu and the food was very good, so would recommend it.

Need a cosy, comfy and welcoming pub with a roaring coal fires and a warm welcome? Our group of seven were seeking classic pub food and interesting vegan options - and we found it! We were staying in the village and came here for a birthday dinner. Excellent food in sizeable portions. Especially notable were pumpkin soup, hearty and full of flavour, and chunky chips to go with well timed steaks. Our nephew also commended highly the steak and ale pie. A cosy setting. In many ways a traditional pub - you won't find a wine list but the wine they offered was fine

We were lucky enough to stay next door to the Gate, visiting for the second time. It's a lovely little pub, good food, open fire and friendly people. Staying in another local village this inn was recommended to us so we took a chance at lunchtime and were not disappointed. A delightful characterful old pub with a beautiful garden and views. The weather was kind so we sat outside with the dog (who was welcome inside too). A short blackboard menu of home cooked meals was good to see. The trout was delicious as was the chicken and mushrooms with tarragon sauce. Charming service and a really relaxing lunch. Highly recommended by us!

We were a group of 8 women celebrating a friends birthday and staying in Bradbourne for the weekend. We had booked a table in advanced and walked over to Brassington across the fields on the public footpaths. We were therefore ready to do justice to a Sunday roast lunch on arrival. Ye Olde Gate Inne did not disappoint in fact it surpassed our expectations. The quality and quantity of food was exceptional with service prompt and attentive. In fact the main course was so filling none of us could manage a dessert which for us is unheard of! Top marks to Ye Olde Gate Inne. If we are in the area again we will certainly return. Thank you.

Just had the best Sunday Roast !!! Charming Olde Worlde pub and after a warm welcome were seated next to a glorious fire with finely polished brasses. We all ordered a Sunday Roast with lamb, beef and turkey on offer. Heaps of freshly cooked veg including creamed leeks and carrots/ swede etc. The hugest yorkshires and the portions had us all beat. Gutted I couldn't manage one of the tempting desserts. This pub is a little gem in a lovely village with fabulous hosts and the food is divine. We will be back !!! !

We were visiting a few churches in the area with a group of 10 friends and we had booked into The Gate for lunch. What a warm welcome we received. The fire was burning brightly in the grate, the brasses were gleaming and the tables were all invitingly laid out ready for our meal. The menu had lots of choice but most of us were enticed by the pie menu, steak & Stilton being the most popular with game pie and chicken & leek also chosen. The servings were so generous that only a few of us had room for afters but these also looked delicious . A good selection of real ales too. Excellent service and ambiance. Staying in Brassington for a week so we've popped in here a few of times. Initially on our first day here, we came in for drinks and to get the lie of the land. Guinness was lovely and it was nice chatting to the landlady. We were initially the only ones in, but then a few locals appeared, and they were friendly too. We booked in for Sunday lunch the next day, which was very nice - huge portions - the beef was excellent, as were the mash, roasted veg and the creamed leeks. The boiled veg was a little underdone to my taste, and the roast potatoes were unusual-looking, in that they were a bit smooth/hard on the outside, but tasted fine once you ate them! Starters were OK, but basic cafe fayre (rather than restaurant/gourmet) and at ~£7 each, a bit expensive for what they were. Can't fault the service though, either at lunch or when we visited again for drinks a couple of days later, when we sat in the pub garden during one of the recent hot days. This is a very characterful pub, with an interesting history, and a nice place to sit and while away a few hours with a decent pint.

How this pub has a 4.5 star rating takes a bit of believing. It is closed more than open and when it is open the meals leave a lot to be desired a very limited menu which I would suggest comes from Chef Mike's collection. This being complimented by very limited drinks options all in all a very disappointing evening outing.

Booked as the inn was highly recommended. The owner was really friendly and welcoming and the pub is certainly very cosy. Unfortunately the food was average. The starters were the best part- loved the pate and the fish, but really didn’t enjoy the Roast…and I eat a lot of roasts! In terms of desserts the Terry’s chocolate tort was a hit with the kids and the lemon cheesecake also went down well.Sadly probably wouldn’t be high on my return list for the food but I’d def go in for a drink. Is very dog friendly too so that’s definitely a plus!

If there was a problem where we had parked would of been quite happy to move the car , all he had to do was ask ? We planned a night out at Ye Old Gate Inn at Brassington a few weeks ago with 2 other couples and were really looking forward to it. There were lots of cars parked on the street when we arrived so we pulled up outside the door to let everyone out. As we did, a man (possibly the landlord) came running out shouting that we couldn’t park there as it was completely blocking the entrance, not quite the gregarious welcome we had been expecting! People sat outside looked on in disbelief and when we tried to explain we weren’t blocking the car park at all he just stormed back inside muttering to himself. He was obviously having a bad day, drunk or possibly both? After the terrible 16 months hospitality has had, you would expect business owners to be a bit more friendly if they expect customers to come back in to their establishments and get them back to turning a profit. I must say that everywhere else we have been since businesses have been allowed to open up have been excellent and tried their best to be accommodating. This man should take a good long look at himself and his approach to running a hospitality business or prepare to close again, permanently this time. 0 STARS…!

I had a terrible experience at this pub. It was my first day out after 2 weeks of self isolation and I left home early in tears. We came to watch the Euros final. I am a vegan and was told twice that there was no vegan food available, but they would later check when the chef arrived. I was later offered a cheese and coleslaw sandwich, which I could not eat. After buying some crisps from the bar and still being hungry, I asked my sister who was on her way to bring me a snack. I was eating a nutella sandwich in the outdoor seating area when the landlady came over to shout at me in a completely uncalled for and unreasonable way. She was clearly drinking, and seemed to wish to publicly humiliate me in front of all of her friends in pub. the way she spoke to me was unprofessional at best, and offensive and discriminatory at worse. 1. You need to communicate better with your floor staff so they know what they can offer customers. This shows a deep disregard of dietary and allergic requirements of your clients. 2. Even if a person is consuming their own food on premises (prior to wanting to purchase food!) you can ask them to eat elsewhere, or stop, or offer them something they can eat! Shouting and humiliating is not the way to run a 'restaurant' We will never be coming back. You should be ashamed of yourself for how you acted.
