White Lion in Derbyshire Dales

Booked for 2 after a long day of hiking. The pub was fairly busy but food still didn’t take too long. We both had the beef pie which we both agreed was the best beef pie we had ever had! The quality and quantity of the beef was brilliant, the chips were clearly made from fresh potatoes which were great, and the gravy to go with it had a beautiful taste too! The only thing I would say is that there could have been slightly more veg but that may just be because I was starving! The rich sticky toffee pudding afterwards was the icing on the cake! All in all, an amazing meal and will certainly be back again.

Booked in for Christmas day lunch. Jen was quick at responding to emails when booking and answered all my questions about gluten-free options. On arrival, the atmosphere was lovely and Chistmassy, and we were directed to our table after ordering drinks at the bar. Starters were lovely, plenty of flavour, main courses were a bit delayed coming out but they were tasty and the waiter apologised for the wait. Pudding was good too, cant beat a christmas pud!. My only complaint would be that the 'gluten free' options for the main just involved things being taken off and a very watery gravy replacing the usual one. So two of us paid the same price for a gluten-free main that was missing the stuffing, pigs in blankets, and a Yorkshire pudding. Wouldn't mind if there had been more veg, roasties, or additional slices of turkey as a replacement, but I felt a bit robbed when the normal main looked so good. Overall though the food was good and we had a nice time, the staff were friendly and it had a nice country pub feel

We passed this pub during a walk in the summer so decided to try it . It's a fair drive from sheffield especially on a wet and windy night in winter but we'll well worth it. Upon entering We was taken to our table next to a lovely open fire nice and cosy. We ordered 2 mains (brisket and steak and kidney pie) which was absolutely beautiful and so deliciously tasty. Sticky toffee pudding to follow, I don't usually have dessert but our main was so nice I couldn't really refuse, again so nice. Little village pubs sometimes tend to be pricey , but this pub we think was very reasonable in price what we had especially for how nice the food was and pleasant surroundings. We will definitely pop back over in the new year and I really do recommend give it a try you won't be disappointed.

The Turkey Sunday roasts were literally to die for ! We had pudding too! It was devine. Such lovely staff, so welcoming and food was extremely memorable. Doggy friendly!!

Away for my mother's 80th in Bakewell, we wanted a dog friendly pub for lunch and saw a review on Instagram about the White Lion pub, rang before our arrival as 16 people in our party, they were really friendly, took our booking, lots of communication before hand. When we arrived they were very accommodating, food was fantastic and despite the amount of our party was on time and all served together. Great pub can't recommend it enough

We visited this pub for lunch and found it to be very welcoming and homely. My wife had the soup of the day and I had the beef and red wine pie. The food was excellent, as was the service we received. I would highly recommend this pub.

We had a great meal at the White Lion; both the steak pie and chicken kiev were excellent and the landlord couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Definitely added to our favourite places to eat in the area.

Fantastic place to eat. The food is fabulous... don't be fooled by thinking the menu is standard pub grub. The chicken Kiev is homemade...a rare thing these days and the meat pie is the very best.

Disappointed Sunday dinner today and it’s usually so good. It looked amazing. The roast pork was tough, the beef good. My roast potatoes were hard to cut up, they were too overdone. The vegetables were odd too, no red cabbage but over cooked ordinary cabbage, two sugar snap peas, one carrot and one bit of swede . There was one floret of cauliflower cheese and mine was stone cold. Everything else was lukewarm and topped with dressed rocket. I would have commented but wasn’t asked how the meal was. Hopefully it was just a one off as it’s a lovely pub and the staff have been great in the past.

We really enjoyed our visit. We found a scrabble board to entertain the kids whilst we were waiting for our food. But it didn’t take long at all. They had a good variety of food but not an overly long menu. The food was great. There were fires burning the staff were friendly and relaxed would definitely recommend

Superb child and dog friendly pub with great food and exceptional service. The QR code for the rocket on the kids' activity sheet is inspired and kept my grandsons entranced while adults enjoyed their meal. Btw the home made pie is incredible.

Visited for the first time today for Sunday lunch. There’s a lot of competition in the area but I’d say that was the best sunday roast I’ve had in a while. Their gravy is delicious and the meats were perfectly cooked. Our daughter had a pizza which was homemade and very tasty. A friendly, welcoming pub. We’ll definitely be returning.

Been twice to eat, fantastic food and great service both times.

We arrived a bit earlier than our booking and asked nicely if we could be seated, not expecting much. Jen was super friendly and quite happy to arrange this. Not suggesting you will have the same experience but was nice to find a landlady who wasn't irritated we arrived early. We both ate the Sunday roast special and crumble desert. The food was fabulous, generous portions, hot, and very tasty thank you. Will definitely come again to such a welcoming and friendly pub.

Booked for Sunday lunch and had both had a roast (pork & chicken). Very nice food, plenty of vegetables, nice stuffing. Plenty of other mains too. Followed up with crumble and one of the best sticky toffee puddings I’ve ever had. Nice friendly staff and good service.

Camping nearby and visited here for dinner. Food was amazing, maybe the best steak pie I have ever had and lots of other great options on the menu. A great find.

After looking for somewhere different to meet for lunch myself and friends visited this lovely pub. A warm welcome and good service was provided. I ordered Fish and chips with a salad which they happily accommodated. The batter was thin and crispy the fish white and thick. Lovely chunky chips and fresh salad with a tasty dressing. It was the best fish I've had in a long time, good quality and cooked perfectly. I had a decaffeinated cappuccino after which was lovely hot and creamy. The accessible toilet was large and clean with a higher seat if you need it. Accessibility wise the front steps have no ramp so I'm not sure if they have a different entrance with more level access. The car park is up a hill behind the pub with some parking out front which can be very busy. I was not in my chair for this visit. For me it was slightly difficult to access but once inside easy to get around and Very much worth the effort. 5 stars for the food and service.

Two espresso martinis (very good) and a really excellent Aperol Spritz while sitting outside in the sunshine with lovely village surroundings. Very friendly husband and wife behind the bar.

What can I say? This was absolutely the best meal that I have had during my two week holiday. The fish pie was absolutely amazing. The chips were proper home made chips. The missus had rhw steak pie which was also awesome. I cannot recommend the food here more. Well worth a visit ! Plus it is dog friendly throughout.

Lovely food in this lovely little pub, atmosphere not as good as the Crispin but food just as good!

We were a bit nervous when we entered the pub as it was completely empty - maybe not that surprising on a random thursday at 5:30pm, but this ended up being perfect for us and our little baby. The staff were so friendly and made us feel welcome, and the food came out so quickly. It was all delicious - we had the beef pie, steak and sticky toffee pudding for dessert and I would thoroughly recommend these dishes. The village the pub is located in is very pretty and only a few minutes walk from our holiday cottage. If you are staying in the area I would definitely say to try this pub.

Lovely pub with a great atmosphere and delicious food. We visited after a day in the area with friends - we had pre-booked a table 24 hours earlier via the website which was easy to use. The food was delicious! - Most of us opted for the beef and red wine pie or the fish and chips, and a few of us had desserts - my husband's eyes lit up when he saw the sticky toffee pudding! We'd definitely visit again if we were in the area.

Came for a Sunday roast after a walk along the trail. Delicious pate starter and even more so beef and pork dinner. Top marks for the cooks and staff Was eerily quiet when we walked in even though it was pretty full.

What an absolute gem of a pub the food was stupendous ☺️💯 my husband had the steak pie it was mahoosive and absolutely delicious accompanied by a tasty pastry to. Enormous chunky proper home cooked chips and veg. Wowwww!!! I opted for a burger which was equally mahoosive with slithers of gurkin tomato and cheese accompanied by homemade coleslaw and chips. Perfik Chocolate Nemesis for dessert oh my days wowsers 😲😲♥️♥️ Amazing chef and staff.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED a visit 👌 💯💯💯💯 Well done guys!!!!

Lovely pub and lovely owners! We rented the function room to have our wedding dinner there and it was perfect. Communication with the landlady was very easy and all of our needs were accommodated. She suggested a person who can do flower arrangements and they were fantastic, the selection of additions to rent to make our wedding special was also great and it all created a lovely place for us to celebrate. The food was amazing!! We will be coming back for food definitely :) if you think about renting a function room for any celebration White Lion is a perfect place :) Thank you for making our day special. Evie and Rich

Popped in for a sandwich lunch. Food good. Very popular, it opened at 12 and when we arrived at 12.15, it was already filling up.

We went to Burns night at the white lion.The food was awesome as was the compare and the piper who piped in the beautiful haggis.IWould highly recommend this lovely village pub.We were warmly welcomed .We enjoyed the whole Burns night experience,The hosts were busy but we felt very included in the Burns night celebrations.

4 of us spent Christmas Day here. Lovely atmosphere and decor. The food was outstanding and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were very busy and did an amazing job. We were in the restaurant alot longer than we anticipated but overall excellent food and we all had a fabulous time. 👌 🎄

This was the first time I had visited The White Lion & what a great find it was. We had Sunday lunch & the food was great. The roast beef was so tender & the vegetables were plentiful. The service was great & the staff were very welcoming & friendly. Would definitely visit again.

We were staying nearby with a group of 12 friends for a 50th birthday celebration and were looking for somewhere close by to have Sunday lunch. What a fantastic choice! The pub is lovely, and the staff very welcoming. We all opted to have the Sunday lunch, and we were not disappointed! It was delicious 😋 We will definitely be back, and we would highly recommend!

We've literally just returned to our holiday cottage after having Sunday lunch. I have to say, this was one of the best pub lunches I've ever had. The roast beef was so tender and the veg was perfect. The gravy was extremely tasty, not just gravy granules, proper gravy! I also managed a chocolate mousse, which tasted home made as well. Service was great. Looked as if the couple who, I presume, own the pub, really care about their customers and work very hard. Chef was excellent. Cannot praise highly enough. Thoroughly recommend.

We went here Friday eve, they have a happy hour 5-7 on Fridays. We bought a bottle of wine , you buy two glasses get the third one completing the bottle FOC so worked out approx £15.00 I had bought the same one for £23.00 the night before in another local pub so a good saving.There was also a few other drinks on the offer ie beer for £3.20 a pint . The food was made to order / home made. Good to see a varied menu and not microwaved standard pub food. My partner had the tandoori chicken which was really nice. I’ve recently been diagnosed with a lactose intolerance so eating out has become difficult. I am not vegan and don’t want to be vegan or vegetarian but it’s usually safer to choose vegan. I found it most refreshing to learn that I could have a pizza with vegan cheese as these are made to order. I opted for tandoori chicken pizza with vegan cheese it was honestly one of the best pizzas I’ve ever tasted. Loved that the base was thin and crispy and not a stodgy base and also their take on it adding mango chutney and mint Riata made it quite unique. Service was good. Nice open fire and atmosphere, would recommend.

Found this place by chance whilst staying locally. Good choice of food, staff friendly & welcoming. The signature beef & red wine pie was absolutely delicious,,,, I can safely say it was the nicest pie I have ever had …. Tender beef, lovely suet pastry & generous portion ! The vegetables served alongside were a great selection, cooked to perfection , & very tasty.

Great pub, service and outstanding food.

We had our big family reunion here and it was excellent. Having been in the catering industry myself, I know the effort it takes, and not many places can achieve top standards. But this place has it all. We had quite a complicated menu, but all needs were catered for, while the preferred, and excellent, email communications leading up to the event were instrumental in arranging this. A good team, front of house happy and energetic, whilst the workings in the back delivered tasty home cooking. I'm a real ale fan, and couldn't rave about Robinsons beers, but the drinks on offer were kept well, and enjoyable. I felt we were not just catered for, but our custom meant alot.

A regular venue for superb food. Visit often and usually on a Saturday or Sunday lunchtime. The menu is varied and the food is always excellently presented. The team is friendly and professional. Consistent excellent experiences here are assured

After a 4.5hr drive to Great Longstone we needed food and obviously as it's a small village there weren't many options. I'd read up on the area and found the White Lion which was maybe 5 mins walk from where we were staying so headed there. We were lucky though, not sure when things changed but it didn't used to be open on a Tuesday, now it is and offered a 'Chippy' day, fish, chips, peas, tartar sauce plus drink for two. The drink selection wasn't ideal, but otherwise the food was great. We had to wait a bit but we arrived just after a number of bookings so was to be expected. We also indulged in dessert, an apple crumble and a sticky toffee pudding, both looked and tasted great. We popped home to freshen up and came back for a nightcap, good cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, worth a visit.

What a great pub, we booked for Sunday lunch after a long dog walk along the Monsal Trail. You can park near the pub, head to the trail which is about 10 minute walk along local footpaths and head out either way for as long as you want. We choose a 10km walk (out and back route) towards Millers Dale. Our reason for choosing the pub was the offer of Sunday roast that included a good vegetarian option. We were not disappointed. The Veggie option was superb- all the trimmings of a Sunday Roast but with a nice roast veggie slice. The rest of us choosing the more traditional lunch were treated to a wonderful joint and with plenty of gravy for the Yorkshire :-) It is also super dog friendly, providing our young pup not only a couple of biscuits but also a blanket to lie on and snooze whilst we ate. Thanks to the team for the service and quality of the food - excellent.

Last time we visited the Peak District we ate here and waxed lyrical about their beef shin pie. We visited twice. On this recent visit we came back again for Sunday lunch and weren't disappointed. Gorgeous food, full Sunday lunch with all the trimming. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly locals who chatted with us, easy atmosphere and comfy. Great place to be on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We'll be back again.

Nicely decorated pub with a modern fresh look, sadly they were awaiting a beer delivery on our visit so the choice was a little limited, but good nonetheless. There are a selection of board games, so perfect for a rainy day.

The calamari ciabatta is truly sensational, I need to know where the chef gets their tomatoes from and how they cook them.

Happy Hour!!! The only one happy is the landlady. Advertisement says happy hour each Friday 5-7pm. Arrived at 6:30 and was duly charged full price for both drinks. What a rip off. Suggest you find somewhere else to drink.

Came here tonight for dinner after a fairly disastrous visit to the Crispin the night before. We had a lovely meal - the menu contains some classics, and some more inventive stuff as well. Between us we had a beef brisket pizza and a stir...

We booked for Sunday lunch at the White Lion as there were so many good reviews. We were not disappointed the roast beef we had was cracking, loads of veg, tender meat,Yorkshire pudding the works in fact. The staff were all really nice and the price was reasonable too. Would have given 5 stars for everything, atmosphere was spoilt a bit by a yapping dog - which was irritating. Not the pubs fault but if having dogs in pubs they should be well behaved.

300 motorcyclists stopped there at the end of this years Distinguished Gentlemens Ride. The staff were very friendly and took really good care of us. Recommended.
