If I could give a zero l would, it was absolutely disgusting, when we got home we threw it all away. The chips were undercooked, my son ordered sausage chips and peas, and when opened the peas were just tipped all over the chips not in a carton as at the side as illustrated on their site, and it was just one horrible disgusting mess. If I had an option to give 0 stars, I would have surely given that. This is the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Absolutely tasteless with 0 salt, drenched in oil, batter uncooked. Their menu says fish and chips, cod £8.20, so obviously as a customer I would think its fish and chips. The lady(quite cold and rude) charged me £11.20 saying chips is £3 extra. Even mushy peas is charged extra. If you are hungry dont make the mistake of coming here, go to any random cafe or remain hungry. That’s better!

had 2 Senior Citizens lunch's good service , nice food only thing was batter usually light and crispy, for some reason today heavy and hard hopefully an off day ... still delightful

This establishment has a prime spot in this charming Peak District tourist trap and this possibly is the reason why the food is not cooked to the standards, care and tradition that such a place richly deserves. At least not on this occasion. Chips were stodgy and undercooked and unfortunately I had to leave half of them uneaten. Friendly service of course but the food left a lot to be desired and I won't be returning for seconds here anytime soon. The issue I have in Bakewell is that the 'other' chippy round the corner (Riverside) is worse.

Was a ok little fish shop, only issuse was chips were a bit under cooked but I presumed it was because it was busy and they were just trying to get the queue down quickly they weren't bad just needed a little longer.

The fish and chips themselves could have tasted ok and was a good size portion Unfortunately you had to find it under the thick layer of grease on the food, and in the bottom of the tray so half of it was thrown away. Wouldn't go again

So disappointed. We have used the take away service here many times over the years and this is the only time it was a total letdown. To be honest the wait was ridiculously long and it wasn't really busy. The staff got the orders wrong for the people in front which delayed things even more. But we were ok waiting as the food is delicious... well not this time! The chips were greasy, and I mean REALLY greasy and lots were green. The fish batter was dense, tasteless and not at all bubbly. (Cooking oil too cold?) The fish was so small and thin it was very poor value overall. Such a shame as I don't feel like risking a return visit.

Really delicious fish & chips, I just read some other reviews before posting and maybe the restaurant has inconsistency, but for our (4 of us) fish and chips, all the fish was cooked perfectly and very tasty, also the batter was thin and crispy so not overbearing like some other batters. The chips were also great, in the restaurant at least they don't have any seasoning on by default, however there is seasoning on the table so people can choose how much they want on their chips, I quite liked this approach! Also, they had HOMEMADE tartare sauce that was absolutely delicious and they gave us a very generous portion! In the restaurant the chairs were slightly tight but the food was so good that it made up for it!

We normally visit once a month and in the past have enjoyed our fish & chips, but our party of eight was very disappointed with our food on a recent visit. The chips were dreadful, with an odd colour and far from fresh. The fish was just about ok. This after waiting a long time to be served. Apparently the usual manager Mihi was on holiday and we hope he realises that standards slipped during his absence. When we complained the waiter said there was nothing he could do! They can and must do better.

The restaurant is upstairs, it is very clean and staff are sociable. Worth a visit

Probably one of the worst fish and chips I've ever had, fish is not fresh, greasy and dried. My fired Mars bar tasted better than the main course!

I'm afraid the food was very disappointing, chips were undercooked, the fish I suspect was frozen and dry, the batter was like fatty glue, thoroughly unpleasant experience in the mouth, we ended up throwing it in the bin I'm afraid, felt like a waste of food and money, would not recommend.

Good price and portions! Fish was expensive (about £8) so went for sausage which was about £2.50 for a large. Large chips aswell about £3 and good portion. Salt and vinegar on the side so can add yourself which is great bc I usually have to ask for extra! Very quick service

Went here as had a pie on the menu. Service was slow and the pie and chips were average. Not great and had better from local back home. Fish was alright and cheaper than Riverside Traditional Fish And Chips around the corner (whose chips were better).

After the service without a smile and being asked for over £10 for a portion of fish and chips we hoped they would taste nice. We were wrong! Odd tasting greasy batter, dry fish and soggy chips like slugs. Absolutely no flavour (apart from the odd tasting fish), not even of salt and vinegar which must be rationed. Don't bother especially at that price

I was so excited to get a chippy portion of chips and these were not good. They left a starchy unpleasant texture in my mouth. Generally so below average. No squishy or really crispy chips. Also a bit disappointing they don't allow take away customers to use the toilet unless you eat in the restaurant.

Visited the restaurant and found the staff friendly & efficient . Food was cooked well and served hot and a generous amount . Great value for money . Would recommend

We waited half an hour to be given dodgy tasting fish and crunchy raw chips. Avoid at all costs. The good reviews I suspect were from when the management was different. This place is currently inedible.

Came for lunch & honestly one of the worst fish & chips I’ve eaten. Had an extended wait for ‘freshly cooked cod’ the fish was tasteless like it was had been frozen frozen, defrosted then cooked, batter was thick & soggy with no taste & chips were swimming in grease. I thought with the shop having been there since 1973 it would be good but unfortunately not. Go at your own peril but I would recommend trying elsewhere

This restaurant serves quality fish and chips that equals the east coast, and that says something. we have so many wonderful fish shops on our east coast. This place is well worth the visit with very tasty fish.

Waited on entrance but there was no one to greet us. Went upstairs and ask a waiter and he completely ignored us and turned away.

Very nice fish and chips. Bit cramped when eating upstairs in the restaurant but service was good and a quality bit of fish. Had the lite bites portion and they were a little stingy with the chips. Stick a few more on there and treat your customers - it’s lite bites not tight bites.

On a damp day in between Christmas and new year we headed over to Bakewell. We walked past and the smell drew us in. We sat upstairs. We were greeted by a friendly man who seated us. The restaurant is so clean and tidy and organised. We ordered 2 small fish and chips it was just enough. Very nice chips not greasy the fish was beautiful crispy batter just the right size. Mushy peas lovely. Cannot fault it. Not expensive great food. Great service very clean.

Came here with quite a large group and got lucky to be seated immediately, can imagine there would be quite a wait on weekends or in tourist season. Staff were exceedingly patient and helpful. Food was very good as well, both the fish and the fishcakes went down well, which left us with a really great experience overall.

i was overcharged at this place. the fish and chips were not very nice either. the mushy peas were poured over the fish and chips instead of being served separately in a pot. i don’t recommend it.

I've been coming to Bakewell for nearly 40 years now, and use this chippy regularly, we called on Monday last week to the restaurant side to wait over 20 min, we decided to take away, the chap behind the counter was very pleasant, but the food was over £20, for fish and chips twice, painfully dear, and I would not even score the food 1 out of 10 it was disgusting, I was going to take it back but my wife didn't want the fuss, I WONT BE GOING AGAIN absolutely disgusting

I hate to leave a bad review, but today's disappointing experience has left a decidedly "bad taste". We chose to eat in the restaurant above the Takeaway, but were immediately met by the stink of fish. We should have turned back and left at that point. We commented to the 2 waiting staff who apparently couldn't smell it ..... obviously nose blind. Our orders came, and visually looked great. Turned out that the fish was simply OK, but the chips were dreadful, tasteless and many were under cooked. Best bit !! the bread and mushy peas and the smart toilets. The server did ask if all was OK when we paid. We told them how poor it was, but that's as far as it went, no apology, or sorry I'll tell/get the manager .... nothing. Not impressed.

Popped in for a bit of lunch as both my partner and I fancied fish and chips. We got a large fish and chips to share (as it was only lunch) and it was a good portion size for us both. The chips are exceptionally good, golden and crispy on the outside and fluffy as a feather on the inside.

Jeremy Clarkson was one day telling us about best fish and chips. In his opinion. Yet he clearly never heard of this place. I'll say it... This is the best chippy outside my jurisdiction in NM. Nothing can come even remotely close to my local chippy's. Ever. That's the law and order and it's got to be like that. Why? Well for what I paid here I would have more in my place. More in volume, flavour... Just more. Or if I choose I could have pizza and still some change for a pint and what else. And it's not like fish was best sort either. If you look closely and think about it... They probably fishing them from river just stone throw from the place. * What i didn't like? Size. I had small things in my life. This was smaller that most of them. And peas where... Erm... Do people in Bakewell know what salt is? Don't be afraid to use it really. Does change a lot. So no salt in peas. Chips where good. Well what little I had for price or... Well X large in my place. Or many others I had f&ch and peas. And I don't know why it's not served next to chips. Peas I mean. Not on top of chips with fish on it. That's makes it really difficult to put salt and vinegar. Yes it's not quality it's quantity. More we serve more we earn. But you can get both, and still be winner. Yeah but no. I don't want that one, quoting Andy from Little Britain. I'll skip it. As for that price I'm sure you can better. * it's a joke.

Looked a good sized fish but unfortunately was 80% batter. When I eventually located a small piece of fish it was bone dry. Would not recommend.

Me and my partner were spoilt for choice when we wanted fish and chips. A friend recommended this place and we were glad we chose them. Fish & chips and jumbo sausage & chips absolutely lovely. Great service. 10/10

We were starving after walking the monsal trail and decided we wanted some fish and chips whilst in Bakewell. I had done a bit of research a few days before and this seemed to be the best place for fish and chips. the establishment itself was clean and well presented, with the seating for sit in fish and chips being provided upstairs above the takeaway operation onj the ground floor. the big downside i would call all is that seating was somewhat tight, as such for a group of big lads like ourselves, we were a little on top of each other Vs. if a more spread out table was provided. The servers were young but friendly and professional and efficiently took out order. I had lemon sole and chips (excellent to see something a little different from the usual Cod and Haddock offerings in most places), my two friends had cod and chips and one of my friends ordered some extra curry sauce. the turn around time on this food was under 15 minuets and when the food arrived it was fresh and well presented. there was a slight mix up with the curry sauce coming out with my lemon sole rather than my friends cod as ordered, but it was in a separate dipping bowl so this was easily swapped over. The quality of the food was great, the fish was well fried with a crisp, clean batter. overall the firmness was a little more solid than a take away chip shop, but this was in a good way and not a negative. This chips were quite pale, me and my friend agreed they were a little anaemic, however this was not born out in the taste, which was excellent and overall these were excellent chips! Price wise my sole and chips was 15.99, but to have this quality of food in a sit down environment was good value for money. On the whole, recommended and I will aim to return - always a good sign!

Currently staying in Bakewell in our caravan so had a walk down to this chip shop with family. my partner and a few others wanted curry sauce on the chips but just as the lad was about to put it on the lager bigger guy said no that needs to be saved for tomorrow! they closed at 8 and this was 6pm… why no curry sauce at this time & why does it need to be saved for tomorrow? Portions were tiny for £2.50 for plain chips. won’t be back,will try the other one around the corner. if your the manager reading this you need to sort it out & ask staff why they can’t serve curry sauce past 6pm

I can safely say that I have never had such bad chips in my entire life as the trash that they sold me today. They were hard and had to be chewed! They went straight in the bin!! Disgusting!

I had traditional cod & chips and was impressed by the freshness and flavour of the fish. There was no queue. We took advantage of the seating inside the shop. A welcome break on a long journey. Parking and toilets are available nearby, but you have to pay for both.

I had small fish & chips takeaway , the fish was without doubt the worst piece of fish I had ever been served. It was totally grey and slimy and extremely smelly! Having walked to the river to eat , the whole lot went straight into a nearby bin . Disgusting !

Had takeaway haddock and chips. Cost £10.40. Fish was soggy and tasteless, I suspect frozen and probably not haddock based upon the size of the flakes. Chips were better than the fish, but the whole thing was very greasy. Not good value for money at all unfortunately

First time here ....so impressed. Airy room...excellent..very polite staff couldn't have been any more attentive. Superb pensioners meal deal...just right size ,everything tasted and was cooked to perfection. So impressed with high hygiene standard to, thorough spray and tables wiped after . Would highly recommend. We will return.

I was really looking forward to having some gluten free fish/chips. I was quite disappointed, when I asked the gentleman behind the counter. Do you service gluten free chip/fish, to be told they ONlY do chips GF no fish. Which I found very strange dispite the review saying others have had GF chips/fish ??? I was hungry so took the chips, in the end and they were very nice, just a shame about the curry sauce and fish part. Never mind. Over all 3 stars I feel is fair, plus price wasn't bad either and the wait wasn't long either.

Always call here for our lunch when we visited Bakewell on Market Day. Unfortunately our order came slightly wrong when we visited this time but we'll still use this place again.

Visited Bakewell today and had lunch at this restaurant. I have to be honest did not enjoy the food at all. Tasteless and over priced to say the least . The environment and staff were pleasant but that's about it .

Horrible place staff when asked do you do gluten. Free walked away while talking to me so why advertise when they said no wouldn't reccomend

The fish was too oily and being a fan of battered fish and wasn’t too pleased with the taste.

Absolutely disgusting the chips were undercooked and soggy with loads of black eyes and the fish the batter was mushy and full of fat the fish was small and slightly cold. I started to eat it and it was disgusting making me feel sick with all the fat dripping off everything, when I returned it I was given a refund but they argued and said they don’t remove chips with black eyes the customers do that, I mentioned about the batter being full of fat and soggy they said it was the batter, Seriously I drove 55 miles to have what used to be nice fish and chips but the quality is not worth the 1star I have to give. Then the price almost £11 for those disgusting fish and chips. I’m going to have a Burger King on my way home

We sat in the resturant to eat. The person serving was like an Italian Basil Faulty that said the fish and chips are the best anywhere, maybe a bit happier service would help.

Their website states that they are open until 8pm on a Wednesday. The were closed at 7.30pm, so clearly don’t need my business. I rang to explain that I’d order (at 7.30pm) and collect at 7.50pm, to which I was told “ No, we’re closed” with no apology!

Food was delicious fish was Bob on and the chips were nice and tasty really good value and you won't be disappointed

Visited during a weekend away for lunch. The modern exterior/ interior and lengthy queue pulled us in- we thought it must be good! As soon as we walked- it stunk of fish- I know it’s a fish and chip shop but something seemed off with such a stench! We found the staff quite robotic, very polite though - but this made the place lack a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Food came quickly- scampi was nice but the chips were bland and undercooked- £13 each for this was very disappointing! Couldn’t wait to pay and go!

The man behind the counter serving, kept pulling up his trousers, and when dishing up the chips kept touching them with his fingers. Not very hygienic, Peas were luke warm and fish greasy. Won’t be returning.

The best in Bakewell! This fish and chip shop is the go to for me. The staff are friendly and usually serve with a smile! The chips are reasonably priced and are well portioned. Definitely recommend if you are going to Bakewell anytime soon!

The experience in the fish and chip resturant was really poor this time round. Having been here previousl. The resturant wasn't busy however the server seem to think it was a necessity to remind every customer he served that he was a lone server and rushed of his feet ? On ordering food the food arrived to the table without cutlery to eat it with or any napkins. Again the server found the need to remind me that again he was serving on his own. There was a customer who ordered pork sausage and chips and mushy peas. It arrived to the customers table minus the peas ???. The customer asked where the peas were. Again the server thought it was a necessity to remind this customer he was a lone server but of ofcourse he would get them 10 mins in the customer stilled hadn't received the peas. When she asked him again about the peas he replied oh I'll take that pea off for you ? The food was medeoka chips were just about cooked and the fish was really greasy. Feels like there's been a change of management but not for the better.

We visited here on the 31/10/22 we purchased the pensioners fish & chip lunch the food arrived it was average the portion size was very poor there was around 12 chips and a very small piece of fish the batter was like Yorkshire pudding the peas were in a tiny ramekin, it was quite expensive the portion size is I would say a child’s portion, it was on a tiny plate the service was utter chaos we would not choose to dine here again sorry.

The man serving the food had what I would describe as a very wet mouth ,.. unfortunately it completely put me off my food as I was aware some spittle was probably in my food Appearance is important,and please don't wipe your face and touch my food .it's not a great look .

I was surprised really with this having read the reviews, personally I found them tasteless, the fish thinner than a wafer and the mushy peas more mush than peas! The ducks near the river seems to like them though.

Waited at bottom of stairs for a table for a significant time to say it was almost empty. The waiter that greeted us was very polite and showed us to our table unfortunately that's the only good point today. The waitress we had was very blunt and hovered over us til we chose instead of asking if we were ready. I said I hadn't chosen yet and she just pointed to something on the menu and said 'here have this' The plates weren't exactly slammed down but they could have been placed with more etiquette. I did have a fish shaped plate which was nice and quirky but it spun every time I touched my food. The atmosphere was a awkward in a word, near silent and the waitress hovering around when the restaurant is narrow made her look out of place. Yhe batter on the fish was extremely greasy so we didn't eat any of that. The waiter did ask if everything was OK, he was polite and had a patient tone, we said yes as he wasn't the issue. The waitress didn't ask but promptly brought out bill over as soon as we were finished. Really disappointed because we go to this fish shop every time we are in Bakewell but have always had take away and it's always been very tasty, fresh and good value for money, always been a 5* before today. I would return, but never to the restaurant.
