Only stayed one night wish we'd stayed longer , staff were lovely helpful and friendly, our room number 8 was perfect spotless and clean everything you needed. Fish pond outside our room in the courtyard which added to the charm. Booked evening meal which was excellent, pub was very homely with log fire atmosphere very friendly. Will definitely be back for longer next time . Dawn , Steve and Penny ( the staffie ) Rollins .

Good food, beer, both at a very reasonably price. The pub itself was excellent, however the room we stayed in was ok for our requirements but the bathroom, not good, mould growing, could do with, er strip it out and start again

I've just got back after spending 2 nights here with my partner. We stayed in room 3, which had 8 steps upto door, I have a disability so had to take my time, especially when coming back from walks, so I will ask for down stairs one if I stayed again. The room was warm clean & comfy especially the bed, the TV worked great, you have hot drink supplies toiletries towels, 3 pp. I struggled walking down the very steep hills into Matlock Town we did it 3times In the 48 hrs there, but we got the bus back up, it was £2 pp & once moving only on the bus 3-minutes. The only 2 things I think need to be looked at is, painting over the small mould areas in windows & including breakfast in the price, as for £70 a night in a basic room. It'd of been £40 if we had breakfast both days do instead went into town. Or at least make it half price for those staying in pub accommodation. We would definitely stay again if coming back that way, especially for Thursday night Games night as the locals & their 4 legged friends were very welcoming. 🥰 oh & the free chips were Yummy 😋

Friendly modest place. Good bar and breakfast and good views from the gardens over towards Riber Castle and sufficient parking. If you prefer a twin room then you'll get room 2 which is probably the least desirable room, so make your choice.

This is a nice pub with plenty of parking, it had a decent food menu with a good range of choice. The food is good and they give you big portions, although it might be best to go earlier in the evening as a few bits had sold out when I visited. The pub had a good atmosphere and shows live football too. It's also very dog friendly and the staff gave my dog some fuss and a treat.

This is not a Greene King pub as advertised on the board at the front of the hotel/website. The room we had been allocated was dark, had a leaking toilet, a blind that didn't close and no curtains. This wasn't the main problem though: we weren't told until after we'd checked in that the pub facilities weren't available because of a large private party, meaning we had to find alternative arrangements at the very last minute. The management were not helpful. Only giving it one star as I can't give it no stars!

Ham egg and chips were good. Mum had a breaded mushroom starter as a main but they were overdone. Main reason we went was for a sundae I had previously had there. To be told at 7.40pm the kitchen was shut and the chef had gone home. We had not been informed despite being in the middle of a meal. The bar lady “had a go” at making one, which didn’t go well, and then charged us. Am afraid the disappointment of this visit means we won’t go back and can’t recommend to anyone else

Visited for Sunday lunch. On arrival said we had a booking, member of staff said “I’ve got paperwork to deal with” and disappeared. Left to find our own table. Sat down and no one spoke to us for around 10 minutes or acknowledged we were there - a pet hate. Eventually got to order drinks and food. Limited food options available, server had to check several times what was available as they weren’t sure. When it arrived food was reasonable but clearly reheated. Had to collect own knives forks and napkins from other tables - another pet hate. Salt and pepper? Had to ask for it and it came in individual sachets? Used toilets - on way walked past the kitchen and saw a pile of Yorkshire puddings stacked up on a sink. Went to pay bill at bar - female working behind bar was busy having a laugh with the locals but eventually took my payment. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Went here for a meal on Sunday afternoon, food wasn’t great - Sunday lunch, chicken still pink on many plates, vegetables over cooked, stuffing was a solid block and was brought out after the meals were nearly eaten, Yorkshire’s were burnt. Service wasn’t great, young waitresses didn’t know what was in stock or not in the the bar. As we walked through to the back room the other rooms going off the corridor were disgusting and filthy.

The food is ok, just keep in mind you are paying 10 quid for a mixed grill so don't expect the finest quality of food! The staff are really friendly and welcoming. I booked this place as the web site read very well, we were hoping for a couple of days away from the Covid mayhem. We booked and anticipated two nights stay with full English breakfasts. On arrival at approximately 15.30 Sunday we promptly had our temperature taken and asked for the balance of our booking fee, I was told our room was in the converted stable block around the back. The room was small and basic but adequate, we later noticed the tiny shower room was a bit mouldy but felt it was not worth complaining about at that time. We also read on a piece of paper that the fire alarm system was faulty and may go off, not sure what we were supposed to do about resetting it if it did start flashing and screaming in the night. At about 7pm we visited the bar and enquired about food and were informed that the kitchen closed at 4pm on Sundays although the room welcoming document and Public House opening times stated 8pm. A bit disappointing but nothing could be done, I then asked what time the breakfast was available and was told there wasn't any because of the Covid situation, its only available at weekends. The coronavirus situation is affecting everyone in some form or another but none of these temporary inconveniences were mentioned to us upon arrival or the fact that the draymen would arrive at 7.30am and make just about as much noise as they could dropping and rolling barrels whilst whistling as they worked. The location is atop a very steep hill so a car is essential.

The staff was very welcoming and we want to say a thank-you to Liam and the young women who served us our food, both had very good people skills. The land lady Kerry was very nice too. We stayed in room 5 which was outside in a little cottage type out building and was at the top. The room was lovely and clean, the toilet was clean and the bed was very comfy. We had dinner at the pub and it was lovely, the salmon my other half had was perfectly cooked and the gammon which I had was very nicely done as well. The price overall was excellent. I would recommend staying here, and hopefully we can stay again soon.

Stopped for lunch after a lovely walk at Lumsdale Waterfalls. Pleasant enough inside. Clean. Staff were friendly. I ordered a Riber Burger, husband the special 'ham, egg & chips' which looked great. The burger, bacon and onion rings were cremated. I was so hungry, tried to eat my way through it, but became too much of a challenge. Mentioned to one of the bar staff. This is my saddest review I have ever undertaken. Firstly it is a disappointing indictment of society today that this establishment has adopted a policy of no “tab” facility and ensure you either have cash or card to pay at every purchase, which, whilst understandable is nevertheless still annoying. The place is a bulk standard chain of pubs offering all the standard pub classics and a few specials. Pricing on the menu is clearly low cost but coupled with that you do expect a lev el of food you can eat. I chose a steak, prawn and chicken surf and turf. It was a few scampi with the thinnest rump steak which was cremated ( I had requested medium rare) with a scraggy slice of a dry old chicken. I should have complained but had lost the will to live, and just wanted to get out of there. We skipped desert and went to McDonalds for a McFlurry as we felt we couldn’t take the risk at the pub. The staff were functional and we didn’t feel welcome and they obviously viewed this level of service as just a job.

called in here while waiting for the bus into Matlock cenre, however on discussion with the lady behind the bar we were advised it would probably be cheaper to get a taxi between the 5 of us and gave us a number, For this reason i upgraded my score! Very friendly and helpful staff. the pub itself is a Greene King which usually fills me with dread due to the poor real ale selection (ie what the brewery say you can have) and cider, Old Speckled Hen was chosen and was well-kept (a plus point). the cider was Strongbow and Strongbow Dark Fruits, not very imaginative but again nicely kept (you'd be surprised how many places can get it wrong!). the menu looked quite nice, and good prices too - small selection which I would guess would be well-cooked, certainly smelt good. Would drop in again if we were in the area, due to the well-kept beer.

Called here when staying in Matlock for the weekend. I had chilli and rice It was well priced and nicely presented. The chilli had good flavour and I would order again again. My friends also enjoyed both of their meals - burger and gammon. Would visit again nice friendly pub with a good atmosphere.

Had a lovely meal for my grandsons birthday. Everyone was friendly. Happily recommend to my friends. Waiters brought out a birthday cake for my grandson and also put up Happy Birthday banners. My grandson was thrilled.

Well we have been here before and the last time we came one of my friends kids had a accident and knocked a plate of rice of the table which they offered to clean up and told to leave it very rudely and they proceeded to put a bag on the floor which was embarrassing. So we thought we would give it another go on 5th November and as soon as we walked through the door the so called landlady got some black bags out and went to put them around the table also she had terrible attitude. Also I bet they wouldn't do this to a disabled person.. dare to say we will not be coming back here again.

Visited as a couple for tea at 6.30 pm on a Thursday evening, the pub was pretty full with a lot of people having a meal.Ordered a rump steak which came with chips/salad and onion rings plus a burger topped with bacon and a fried egg plus chips/salad and onion rings, the meal was very nice and the service was quick in a relaxing environment and the staff were absolutely fine. The cost of the meal was around £17 plus just over £5 for a pint and half of lager, would go back again for another meal at this pub.

We stayed nearby and walked in mainly due to its proximity and it ended up being such a lovely experience. They had pheasant casserole on as a special and it was so delicious! One of the best meals I had out in a while. The service by the young guy at the bar was great too. Highly recommend for some delicious homely food.

Disappointed Sunday dinner today and it’s usually so good. It looked amazing. The roast pork was tough, the beef good. My roast potatoes were hard to cut up, they were too overdone. The vegetables were odd too, no red cabbage but over cooked ordinary cabbage, two sugar snap peas, one carrot and one bit of swede . There was one floret of cauliflower cheese and mine was stone cold. Everything else was lukewarm and topped with dressed rocket. I would have commented but wasn’t asked how the meal was. Hopefully it was just a one off as it’s a lovely pub and the staff have been great in the past.
