Nice old pub with good choice of home cooked food. The lady who was running the pub, serving the food and pouring drinks all by herself, still had time to chat to us and was delightful. I really liked this place and its cuisine. We had lunch as a family on the small terrace. It was very nice. Our English neighbors were very friendly and the fish and ship was great. The hamburger was pretty average on the other hand. What really disappointed me was when I noticed on my account statement that they had defrauded me. I made a payment of £13.50. So far, so good. That’s a flow. And a few lines further I see "Cancellation Have The Old Bell £13.50". That's 2 debits and no credit of course. It's a shame.

Lovely atmosphere, very clean and welcoming, professional and efficient staff - all good so far! Sadly the meal was not great. Fish and chips over cooked and dry, the whitebait over-cooked and dry, double up house burger over-cooked and dry- my son declared it a chore to eat and all of us would have left more uneaten had we not been so very hungry. Little point in complaining - the pub was full, it was main dinner service time and if they were pressed to get food out anyway, a re-order would not likely be an improvement. A shame really as it promised so much.

On our visit to Rye for a short weekend break we had a very short walk from our accommodation at the Mermaid Inn to visit Ye Olde Bell Inn for a Saturday evening dinner on our second day in the town. Live music sounds were escaping from the small Inn so we went in to find there was a live entertainer in full flow, but not just any live entertainer, Elvis was in the building! We took a table with our drinks and sat to be entertained. The tribute act was Andy T King a well known UK Elvis impersonator, who put on a great performance to the many people sitting and standing in the bar. The show was so good we stayed all evening and forgot all about dinner!

Towards the end of our 2nd/3rd drink we were asked to move table as there was a reservation on our table (no sign had been put down and we'd been there a while). Firstly, it turned out the reservation was in nearly an hours' time. Surely we could've been left to finish up then move/leave? Secondly, by the time we'd been to the toilet before heading out (about 2 mins after being asked to move), the table had been offered to a group who had just come in (who the reservation was not for). So what was the point? Not the best, really, is it. Shame as food was nice and we had otherwise been well served. But this is basic stuff

The food and drink are decent enough and there is an authentic feel to the place. Unfortunately the food we wanted was unavailable so we decided on second option. They lose a star because of the abandonment of service. Asked by waiter if he could get us any sauces and we asked for ketchup and mayo. Sat waiting until our food went cold before deciding to proceed without as we could only assume waiter had quit his job and gone home. Eventually barmaid asked if food was ok so we explained no ketchup or mayo and no more waiter so off she went. Just in time for final mouthfuls ketchup arrives but no mayo. Oh well.

At Battle Bonfire last night and I have never experienced such bad service. The waiters were so busy talking to people they knew they didn’t even realise half the pint was spilling over and then continued to serve every person they personally knew the second they arrived at the bar which meant those who didn’t know the bartenders had a 30 minute wait. They didn’t even shake the juices so the juice was transparent.

This was our first return since Covid to the restaurant at the Brickwall Hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary and I am happy to say that it has not lost any of its former excellence. The service was friendly and attentive, there was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was well presented, cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. My wife's Gluten Free diet did not cause any problem as every care was taken to make sure that her food was right for her. The portion sizes were ample and very good value for money. I can certainly recommend.
