The coffee is about as bad as it can get. I am a qualified trained Barista with my own Espresso machine. My Latte tasted like a weak milk drink no taste of coffee, my wife drinks a black Americano which when I tasted it reminded me of a cheap instant coffee. There are two possible issues poorly trained staff or cheap coffee or maybe both. At home I only use Exhale organic coffee I will not settle for anything less

We came here for some lunch as usually the nice garden centres have lovely food. The garden centre and all the shops are great. However the food area is now very tired looking. The milk had gone off that we were served in our coffee. My jacket potato was so brown inside. Like when they are a day old and then reheated. I was offered a sandwich alternative. It was just dry and tasteless. So we basically completely wasted our money. No offer of refunding.

Had all day breakfast. Over priced but parked my judgement on this and hoped it would be worth it!!! Should have listened to my gut. Beans disgusting and cold, sausage and bacon not properly cooked, 2 slices of bread bone dry, tomato raw. Ate the eggs and chips. I suggest the catering staff visit the Redbeck to see what a breakfast should be like or better still re take their catering qualifications if in fact they have any. Don't know how they have the nerve to charge that and then produce poorly cooked, barely warm food.

Ordered 3 large Americanos. Although hot, two were clearly lacking a 'shot or two of coffee'. This was not the first time, and frustrated I complained. Rather than apologise, the lady said 'we had the machine serviced yesterday'. she then walked off saying, I'll get you two more'. She returned with 2 cups that looked no different along with 4 slices of bread which I doubt had seen the inside of the toaster. I'll never return but others may choose otherwise. I gave a 1 star rating as the garden centre is good. BGC - Please take note. Take a look at Langlands and taste the coffee.

Met up with 4 other family members around 12.15. It was pretty busy with a mixture of adults and children. Three of us had the carvery along with a burger and the gammon. A great selection of the carvery, Turkey, Beef and ham, including Yorkie puds and stuffing. A great selection of veggies, all very well cooked and tasty. I was informed the burger, gammon and accompanied chips were excellent. Followed by coffee and teas. We all thought the food was exceedingly good and very reasonably priced. We also had a relaxed look around the well stocked garden centre. This will definitely be our regular meeting place.

Hi there all Just another quick review about this restaurant, once again had a absolutely marvellous time ,and the atmosphere was excellent. Staff where not only helpful and polite, but very aware of the service that we needed (as we had a dog more about that soon ). Nothing was too much trouble !! and when we asked if one of the meals could be put in a dogs dish , it came out in the same layout as an adult plate, they asked if she was ok with every thing and where told yes as i had checked with my vet. Although it has been a while since my last review about this restaurant i am glad to say that the standards and service has not diminished and the management are still very customer friendly and can be approached about any matter that arises. WE WILL BE BACK IN 2023 so keep up the good no excellent work, thanks again for a lovely time Graham & Diane + Tia

I returned to this cafe today for the first time since it was taken over. Well, what a surprise! It certainly needed someone to re-vamp it and the new owners have done this garden centre cafe proud. The carvery looked amazing and though I only had a quick snack on this visit, I will certainly be back in the not too distant future to sample the wonderful food on display today. May I make a teeny weeny suggestion from a customer's point of view? I headed for the till area after passing the cool drinks cabinet looking for cake and couldn't see any on display near the till. I realised on my way out that it is situated right at the entrance and I had bypassed it. As a retired merchandiser (sorry I know I'm being picky!) maybe position the cooler on the way in then cakes next to the scones which are next to the order point...? I won't miss them next time, that's for sure!

We made a special trip to the Carr Gate garden centre restaurant because it has been taken over by the British Garden Centre Group. When it was a Wyevale garden centre we stopped visiting as the restaurant was rubbish; the service and food selection was poor, often meals advertised were unavailable. Youngsters seemed to be employed to serve which left a lot to be desired since they had no customer service skills or commonsense. Learning British Garden Centres were the new owners, and using their garden centres regularly at Woodthorpe, Chapel and East Durham where the staff there are helpful and friendly, the choice/availability of food is excellent and the service is second to none, we thought the restaurant at Carr Gate would now be the same. Unfortunately this was not the case. On Sunday lunchtime at 12.15, from the five options on the specials board only two were still available. The self-service cutlery was filthy and we had to search through to find clean items. Whilst waiting for our food we noticed another lady asking for clean cutlery to be brought out and a gentleman had to ask for two clean glasses as the ones out were dirty. When my food arrived the salad with it was disgusting. All of the leaves were shrivelled and seemingly past the use-by date. Needless to say I left all of them on the plate. It seems young girls are still employed, maybe just at the weekends, I couldn’t say otherwise, but I think sitting cross-legged on the floor at the tables beside us spraying the table bases with cleaner is inappropriate when paying customers are eating. On a couple of occasions we watched her leave the base of table cleaning, go into the kitchen and come straight back out with plates of food in her hands for customers. The time it took her to come out with the food I doubt she had time to wash her hands and then she went straight back to the cleaning. One girl was sweeping the floor with a brush and then used it to sweep the seats. No one seemed to be keeping an eye on what they were doing, obviously tables need clearing and wiping but surely the floor and table bases should be cleaned at closing time. Chatting to other customers they were also very disappointed. One lady having gammon was told there was no pineapple but she could have another egg. Someone else had to wait 15 minutes for their food to arrive after her friends’ food had been served. Hopefully things will improve to the standard of the other British Garden Centres. Staff here could learn so much from the staff at Woodthorpe, Chapel or East Durham as to how to run a successful restaurant. Unless there is a big improvement I think there will be a lot of customers not returning to the restaurant, as we certainly will not. On a plus note, the garden centre was fine with plenty of healthy plants to choose from.

It is now part of the British Garden Centre Group of garden centres. We hadn’t visited for quite some time and won’t be rushing back any time soon either. Ate lunch in the cafe, ham and cheese panini and prawn sandwich. Nothing to shout about. Expected lovely thick cut bread when it was advertised as ‘farmhouse bread’ but just got the packet stuff which was a bit dry. Service was lacking warmth and friendliness. The plants appeared well looked after but are far more expensive than another local garden centre in Wakefield and there was nothing out of the ordinary. My husband commented that it’s the first time I have ever left a garden centre without buying a plant.

Visited in March 2018 and submitted 5 star review. We returned a couple of days ago (June 2019) and the quality of service and product had become unrecognisably poor!No welcoming smile from the waitress taking our order - Tea, Latte and Toasted Teacake. There were a very few other people at tables - certainly not a busy time!Little engagement during or at the end of the process of ordering, collecting and paying. Then the wait for the Toasted Teacake!OK, in the great scheme of things, it's only a VERY small refreshment order but in a very competitive refreshments' environment it's vital that - at the very least - the most modest customer expectations are met i.e welcoming smile, fair prices, prompt service, quality product. The prices are fair. The teacake was served by a different but similarly unsmiling waitress a good 15 mins after order. It was warm, but it must have had but a fleeting visit to the toaster. Warm, yes, but most certainly not toasted or brown!I politely asked the waitress to return it so that it could be toasted for a littrle longer.Several minutes passed and by now I had almost finished my pot of tea.It was returned, but no apology or wish for me to enjoy. It was now more recognisable as a Toasted Teacake and 2 butters were sufficient. However, sadly, the 'moment had passed and it wasn't as enjoyable as it should have been.If the staff have such difficulty meeting the most modest of customer expectations for such a simple food order, it doesn't bode well for some of the more demanding menu items. So, what's happened to quality assurance in a little over a year since our previous - exemplary - visit? If you find this review helpful, please indicate. Thanks

The previous Wyevale Garden Centre now belongs to the British Garden Centre Group and what a difference that has made. The entire place has been re-organized and looks much neater, spacious and cleaner. The staff are much more amenable and visible and it is a far more welcoming place. Yesterday I went to Carr Gate Garden Centre with my family. We go to this café restaurant quite regularly and usually the food and service is to the highest standard. However, yesterday the restaurant was very quiet but we still waited 30 minutes for our food. When it arrived the waitress brought the food but no plates, no cream and only half of the order, and she made 4 more trips bringing individual items each time. My son ordered the ham hock and cheese sandwich on brown bread - what he received was a branston pickle sandwich with a small piece of cheese and ham in it and it was in white bread - for £6.50 this was disgraceful. The rest of us ordered afternoon tea for 3 - the sandwiches had no butter on them, very little filling and 2 quarters didn't even have bread on one side! the scones were really dry. I rarely complain but felt that this whole meal fell well short of the quality I have come to expect from Wyevale. I asked to speak to the café manager - he came out of the kitchen with a tray of cups and started setting them out on the counter - he never looked at me and kept doing tasks all of the time I was trying to speak to him. He appeared totally disinterested. He said he would investigate my complaint and said he was sorry but still avoided eye contact all of time. I assumed he meant he would investigate the issue immediately and would come and tell me what he had found out and to recompense me in someway. we waited 20 minutes but the manager never left the kitchen nor did he make any attempt to contact me to get my contact details. We left feeling very disatified and frankly insulted. This is the worst experience of customer service I have witnessed in years and it feels worse because it came from a so-called manager

We paid £15.60 for two of the above plus pot of tea for two. The coronation chicken was literally running out of two slices of brown bread, with no substance to it at all. We were served with a few crisps and a dessert spoonful of Cole slaw. Although the cup of tea was quite nice, compared to other places I feel it was a very poor affair. The waitresses were not very professional either. We have had far better value meals at other garden centres.

Four of us, including 99 year old mother called for late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Place was quiet - ordered soup and sandwich, panini and a risotto (nothing complicated). After waiting best part of an hour for the food to be delivered the soup and risotto were lukewarm. Asked the waitress to get kitchen to warm up the soup, only for it to return a couple of minutes later exactly the same. Apart from the lukewarm dishes the food was ok, although mother’s sandwich was buttered on one side only. None of this was rocket science so why the long delay?

We decided to visit the Wyevale Garden Centre to take a look at their Christmas goods. We purchased a few things after spending some time looking around and spent just over £100. We decided to have lunch in the Cafe. I ordered the roast Beef dinner and my partner ordered a vegetarian option. There was quite a wait in the queue and an even longer wait for the food to arrive. Both meals were very poor quality, in particular the roast beef dinner was disgustingly poor. The meat was wafer thin, tough, curling at the edges and dry. The vegetables were from frozen, even the roast potatoes. These were dried out and hollow in the middle, a sure sign of frozen or reheated. The parsnips were as bad. If I hadn't paid up front I would have demanded a reduction in the bill or even walked out without paying. NO NO NO, we will NEVER eat here again.

Went for lunch and wander around the garden centre. In the restaurant there was no choice of cold food at the fridge. I was shocked by how expensive the cakes were. Couldn't see a snack menu so felt we were left with the expensive hot food menu and handmade sandwiches showing on the boards behind the counter. A can of pop was nearly £2. I had a hungry baby that needed tending to so my wife made her choice and went to find a table. I then had to call her back as there was no hot food available. There were no signs saying this. Staff seemed more interested in serving the customers behind us so my wife felt pressured into just having a slice of dry cake whilst I opted for an expensive sandwich. At the till point I then spied a snacks menu which the staff member didn't think to mention to me but it was too late. She didn't even mention chips which we later saw being served to other customers. Very poor service. Annoyed that they didn't put a sign up earlier stating there was no hot meals or put up/hand out snack menu choices. A sandwich was about £6, nothing special in the slightest. Would not recommend it.

I honestly can't believe some of the reviews on here. We are regular visitors to carr gate and have taken part in loads of the little digger experiences which are great value. We went to the cafe after the bird bakery in February half term and we're very impressed. One of our party has a dairy intolerance and when we explained this as we ordered afternoon tea the girl politely asked if we would mind waiting a little bit for our food as the manager was going to go out and buy some cakes for her so she could have a wide selection. Staff are always friendly and often carry my drinks through as I have a baby in a pram. As for the comments on soft play we've never had a problem with the toys being dirty however some of the customers there have no manners or basic etiquette when it comes to eating out or following rules, which may I add are clearly visible. Whilst staff can clear the tables they can not be held responsible for the way some people act and when they have tried to combat this with no eating rules in the soft play seating area etc the soft play mafia have caused an uproar so they can't win!

We had not visited the cafe for a few months and having read one or two of the latter reviews were worried that it may have gone down hill. We went today for afternoon tea with friends. Given that it was mid afternoon and half term the place was reasonably busy. We found no evidence of complaints made about dirty floors. Empty tables were clear and clean. The food was good value and really good quality. The scones are particularly praiseworthy. We came into contact with three members of staff all of whom were extremely pleasant and very attentive couldn't have been more helpfull. Don't be put off go give the afternoon tea a go and make your own mind up. Am sure you will go back. We will

Pleasant enough and clean but very expensive for a mediocre self service cafe. Nothing special at all. Wasn't a good choice of food

Our first visit here. Paid the £2:00 fee and went in. First impressions were not good, the whole place looked dirty and unkept. Trodden in food on the floors, tables needing to be cleared. The play equipment looked tired and in need of a deep clean. Bought 2 cups of teas and a fruit scone in the cafe quite pricey for what it was. Dissapointing for us but our grand-daughter enjoyed the experience.

Great place to visit with the little ones there is a grotto and chance to visit santa too. The garden centre is lovely and full of beautiful things to look at and buy and there is tropical fish area for the kids to look at too. The restaurant is reasonable with the added bonus of a soft play area too.

We came in to meet friends and family and it was absolutely disgusting!!!!! The floor doesn't look like it's been swept up in days, the food we had was poor! And very expensive now every time we have been in it's been very busy and the garden centre manager- (someone told me who he was) was sat down doing nothing to help, he looked like he was just laughing at them, the poor girls were run ragged , but I have been in with my husband a few times and every time we have been in that's all he seems to do! That's why the whole garden centre is a mess, everyone just sits on the backside, we won't be going again, the place is a joke!!!!!

Visited today with family. Found the whole place to be so expensive I'm not sure how they stay open. A very small coffee for £2.55 is bad, and 330ml of coke (can size £2, and made to look posh by putting in bottles) is disgusting. Also £3 for a ginger bread is not on. Sort your prices out. We won't be coming again. Left a bad taste.

A visit today with two young babies. The ball pool is basic but that's fair enough. Small is fine but it was dirty and unkempt. The tables have a hole in the middle for umbrellas which had ground in dirt all the way round. There was rubbish in the ball pool. The tables weren't cleaned, obviously, with dirty plates and cups just left. The food was ok but expensive. Would We go again no I doubt it

I visited the restaurant at Carr Gate (Now under new ownership of Wyevale) about 3 months ago and although I wanted lunch, there wasn't any hot food available (12.00 noon) I re-visited yesterday only to find the situation is pretty much the same. Obviously short staffed, tables not cleared, no trays available at the entrance to put your food on but it didn't really matter because there wasn't actually any fresh food to be had only 2 pieces of dry looking cake and pre-packed biscuits. The poor girl on the till was doing her best and apologising for the wait. A young man came twice whilst we were queueing to ask if she was OK and then just helped himself to a cuppa out of one of the machines behind the counter and left her to it when really he should have rolled his sleeves up and got some tables cleared. 4 ladies next to me walked out because they were fed up of waiting. Whilst the garden centre has improved under the new ownership, the cafe has declined rapidly. With all the new competition opening around, all of which have fantastic coffee shops, the management really need to take a long, hard look at what's happening.

Have visited the garden center many times and the cafe never fails to be disappointing. The coffee is the worst ever and so strong it's undrinkable. I drink a lot of coffee and even if I don't particularly like it I will finish it, but not this one. Beyond awful. The cafe is 90% of the time empty now (what should the management get from that??) Every garden centre around is busy these days and their cafes are a massive source of income for lunch, cream teas, Sunday dinners etc but not this one. Management really need to look at why it's always empty and taste your own coffee to get a great example of why! If it wasn't for Maidenhead aquatics wouldn't bother going in here again.

Really nice hot chocolate with whipped cream and Marshmellows which we paid extra for instead of tea and coffee but the sandwiches were very limited and tasted pretty bland to be honest. The mini cakes, scones and macaroons were just ok really. Not bad for £10 I suppose.

Myself and my mum went for afternoon tea on Saturday afternoon. It wasn't busy at all. I had a Groupon voucher. The sandwiches were okay rather small and we're cut in thirds. Think quarters would be better . The scones were okay. But weren't home made they were rather tasteless. Macaroons where so so they could of done with cream in not jam and the small cars were bought/packet not home made.

Had a coffee here whilst visiting the garden centre. We arrived st 11.40, I noticed that breakfast service stood at 11.30, lunch began at 12.00. People were giving orders that were made up after 12. Tasty looking large portions of jacket potatoes. Coffee was OK service a bit slow. Nice clean cafe with a Loo and an outside play area for the kids.

Went today with 2 friends, a grandma and 2 small children arrived at 2pm - strange rules that you can have hot drinks in soft play but not hot food ? Surely hot drinks are more dangerous than food ?? We ordered coffees and I said to the girl that I'll be back to order food - not one mention that it finishes at 3pm - so the children played and we then had to pack up and move into the other seating area - we went to order at 3:02pm to be told that they weren't doing any more hot food ?? We asked where it said that on the menus ? Nowhere - had a bit of a stand off and explained wasn't told earlier when ordered coffees ? Just blank faces - we were then told that we could only order 'afternoon tea' £16 for 2 people - what a rip off !! 6 small sandwiches and a scone and some very small fancy things - we ate it but we were thoroughly disappointed in the customer service - we won't visit again / so anyone reading this - beware as they stop serving food at 3pm not 3:02pm !! But it doesn't state this anywhere !! Be prepared to be ripped off and leave with a sour taste in your mouth :(

I visited with two toddlers plus friends who were travelling up the m1. Perfect place to meet as the children could all play safely while we caught up. The children's menu didn't seem to be displayed anywhere so it took us a while to order, but it was good when it came. A great place to meet up with traveling friends

Defiantly recommend to anyone, I read some negative comments this morning before I set off, and I nearly cancelled, so glad I didn't, thank you Carr gate garden centre. Will defiantly do it again.

We had a Living Social voucher for afternoon the for two here. We looked on the website before we went and discovered that there is no need to book a table. There is plenty of parking, although the car park can be tricky to navigate due to pallets of goods scattered around. There is parking for blue badge holders but again it was tricky to get parked. What looks like the entrance at the from is not an entrance and one is directed to walk through the outside plant area to find the door. Once inside it is warm and inviting. We showed our voucher and ordered our tea - we both opted for herbal infusions and these were in individual teapots. I scouted around for a table - there was plenty available but most had either dirty crockery on them or the tables themselves were a little dirty.I did find a clean table and we sat down to wait for our food, it arrives a short while later and to their credit it looked exactly as the photo does on the website. There were two sorts of sandwiches - with the crusts trimmed off, egg may and cress and ham and tomato. All the sandwiches tasted good and we moved on to the scone - which was warm, you are supplied with a little jar of jam, some butter and a pot of clotted cream. The scone tasted freehand was full of fruit, the top plate on the three-tier cake stand had eight little cakes on it and all were very tasty. Finally there are some toilets and they were clean and smelled fresh, although the toilet cleaning log sheet on the wall had not been filled in at all for today (25/02/2016) All in all a pleasurable afternoon tea - recommended!

Fortunately for me this was a Groupon offer of 2 afternoon teas for £10. If I had paid the full price I would have been exceedingly annoyed. The sandwiches were in massive dry bread rolls, which tasted more like a sweet teacake than bread, with no butter and "plastic "ham and tasteless tomato filling. The scones were OK but less than fresh and at least they had been warmed up a little. The lemon cake was very "industrielle", and the macaroons were chewy and glutinous with a blob of cheap jam in the middle. There is no atmosphere at all and it doesn't encourage one to linger over a pot of tea. Don't bother - there are plenty of other establishments in the area that serve a first class tea.

So we had an hour to kill so we decided to pop down as check out the updated cafe and soft play here. Why oh why did I bother! Yet again I am faced with surly management that quite honestly should not be in the service industry. Which is a constant theme with this particular garden centre.

We were taking gran for afternoon tea, a treat for her 93rd birthday. Rang the day before to book for 3 people for 4pm and we're told no need to book. We duly arrived at the garden centre at about 3-15 and took our time with the old lady, looking round, and arrived at the coffee shop, sat gran down at a table and went to order our 3 afternoon teas. The lady taking our order was helpful & started to prepare the pots of tea. At this point, her colleague arrived and said we couldn't have afternoon tea because it "finished" at 4pm. I looked at my watch, it was 4-03!! and we must have been standing there a good few minutes. Our original server looked aghast and went behind the counter to see if anything could be done, returning to tell us the chef had gone. Apparently a chef is needed to produce a few sandwiches and a slice of cake. And why weren't we told about the 4pm deadline when we rang to book? So we had one very disappointed elderly lady and two quite gob-smacked other people. We asked to see a manager, but there wasn't one available. To be fair, one of the ladies did, at this point, offer to try and get something together for us, but the moment had gone, gran was on her way out and we declined.

I had visited here a couple of years ago when they use to serve both hot & cold meals and thought it was OK> When I saw a groupon offer for afternoon tea I thought it was worth buying - we were not expecting the Ritz but what we were served was disgusting. OK we only paid £9 for two but still expected something edible. On presenting my voucher I was told'we have no scones sorry' I said I had paid for afternoon tea and expected scones - I was told we would be served gateau instead. We were served our tea on a tiered stand. The sandwiches were 'door stops' and were plain sliced cheese on brown and ham and tomato on white. What happened to the egg mayonaise on the menu - didn't have any. The bread was stale and tasted horrible so we left most of it. The carrot cake was pleasant enough but shop bought and by this time we were not feeling too good so took the mince pie and brownie home. The girl behin the counter said the bread was new in that day - it may have been but must have been delivered stale. It was disgusting. We will not visit there again and urge anybody else not too. The girl who had obviously prepared our food came out - probably to visit the toilet and in all honesty did not give me any confidence in the cafes hygiene. What happened to the hot food - it's gone apart from jacket potatoes. Will not visit again. Thank-goodness we only wasted £9.

Shockingly poor service today. Abrupt server who was more interested in having a laugh than speaking to her customers. Long wait on drive thru due to lack of interest. Topped of by a cappuccino that certainly wasn’t a cappuccino, tasted foul! Need some major training and better Managing!

Large group, pre ordered meals in the Xmas period. You would think the chef would make an effort to impress. Starters ok. Mains took 10 minutes to serve 3/4 different choices. Cold plates. Cold food. Vegetables arrived about 3 days after the plated meals. Gravy never materialised. Probably still on the hob. Hot roast potatoes and chips rocked up just after everyone had finished. Serving staff tried their best but kitchen clearly a disorganised shambles. Puddings ok but not that difficult. No check on whether meals were ok. Complacent attitude. Nah!

I usually call in on my commute from Manchester to Nottingham. A great location, ample parking. It can be busy around the car park due to a large business park, fuel station and hot food takeaway's in the vicinity, so have your wits about you in the car park. A huge Starbucks, ample seating, standard Starbucks choices. In general the place is usually always clean with plenty of staff. My last experience wasn't as good, the usual Starbucks standards had rasied it head. Staff milling around chatting and not actioning the rather large line of in shop customers or clearing the dirty tables and cups. In general this is one of the more pleasant Starbucks, let hope my last visit was a blip.
