Wirral Plaice in Mendip

I normally have fish and chips rarely. In the space of 4 days I have been here twice! Absolutely good value and the food is 1st class!

Called in today on are way back home, Amesbury. Great fish and chips, the staff are always happy.

I live roughly 7 miles from the Wirral Plaice. When I first moved to my part of Somerset I spent quite some time seeking out a decent chippy only to be disappointed time & again, until......I found these guys. Been frequenting here now for almost 5 years & they never fail to impress. The women (& dad!) behind serving are all grand. They serve me by name & always check in on me & my dog (Barbra Streisand). Take my advice & don't bother with any other chippy for a good 10 mile radius. Perfectly cooked fish & proper "chippy" chips.....every time!

Great place for take-away traditional fish & chips.

Chose this chippy to grab some fast food to share with friends who were staying at the Travelodge next door. There was quite a queue, but it was fish friday. The staff were friendly, professional and very organised. Even though we ordered a few odd items (Haddock/pea fritters etc) it was all cooked swiftly and wrapped with care. I don't eat fish and I don't like chips - but my friends do. There was a few things on the menu for me - pea fritters and onion rings. I would have LOVED to see sweet potato fries or battered halloumi, but the menu was extensive and I really enjoyed what I had. The 'boys' had fish. The portions were very generous and the cost surprisingly reasonable. Definitely on the 'we will be back list' - keep up the great work. And thank you!

Never had a bad meal from here. Staff are always friendly and portions are generous. It’s not our closest chippy but happy to travel for the quality.

Really good perfectly cooked chips, regular perfect size. In addition, friendly and efficient service even when busy. Plenty of stock in the hot counter and always busy with locals both of which is the only review you need. Parking right outside and they take cards with no minimum purchase. I didnt have anything else at that time but it all looked delicious.

Returning to the area for a holiday we returned to Wirral Plaice as we remembered how good it was the year before. I'm pleased to say they have stayed as good as ever. Two large cod and chips cooked to perfection. Crispy batter on the cod was perfect. Thank you so much for keeping up your standards, and if we don't get back to you this year we will return in 2024.

Fantastic fish and chips and lovely people serving. Very good peas and picckled eggs. The pea fritters are good too.

Really good fish and chip shop. Had 7 meals, including fish, sausage, pies and pastys. All very tasty. Extremely reasonable in price, the 7 meals cost us £45. Very quick service even though it was cooked to order. Would definitely go again and recommend to others in the area.

Stayed at Travelodge. Popped down for last minute supper @8pm. Still lots to choose from in the tray beings 8.15pm close. Wasn't disappointed had fish and chips it was beautiful, really enjoyed the meal. Staff were very friendly too. Thank you all the way from South Wales.

Today 14th Dec Had the large haddock For lunch Not good. Very dry Not worth the money Had to throw most of it in the bin Will not visit again Chips were good

My partner and I were staying in the Travelodge next door, so having this shop so close was already a great bonus. It was already packed when we arrived, but the queue was quickly dealt with, and our 'out of the ordinary' choices from the extensive menu were taken promptly and efficiently. Everything we wanted had to be prepared from fresh, but this only took a few minutes, and the service was pleasant and friendly throughout. The prices were less than we paid at home, and we were astounded at the size of the fish portions that other customers had ordered! Our meal was superb, and we heartily recommend this shop to everyone - thank you!

If only they have tables and chairs for us to dine in, that would be awesome

Fish was really dry 😕 also greasy batter, only walked 30 yards back to travelodge, less than 2 miutes, batter peeled off fish. Lady who served was really friendly though

Was staying in the Travelodge next door and we decided fish and chips were on the menu. Cod and chips, mushy peas and a sausage for the dogs . Piping hot , big fat chips, fluffy soft in the middle and the cod was delicious. Nothing less than excellent.

Ordered a large Cod and saw there were 3 already cooked. The woman cooked another piece for me which I thought was weird. When I got back it was stringy, slimey, tough and THIN. I was really looking forward to a piece of Cod and I ended up throwing a lot of it away. I have to ask - Why would you sell such a rubbish piece of fish to somebody?! I felt totally ripped off. I spent £10 on a pile of chips, peas and a piece of fish that wasn't worth eating. I hope you care enough about your business to take this on bourd Wirral plaice ☹👎

Chips not cooked properly, curry sauce seemed liked one that was left out for a while it was just a big cold blob with film over the top. And by the time I got home and opened it they had forgotten the battered sausage which I paid for. The staff are very friendly but that’s the only good thing about it.

we had a take away cod and chips, we stayed in the travelodge around the corner. this is really the best fish and chips i ever had. Everything was perfect. the the right amount of fat, the batter around the fish amazing, the potatoes not too over-cooked, not too soft, just perfect, the amount of salt and vinegar they put on it. It was just amazing!!! And friendly service too.

We checked out the website before going out. Opening hours state open till 8.30, Sold out of everything , even chips 7.20. VERY disappointed.

I love fish and chips, however the batter doesn't like me! However I find the batter here seems OK in moderation, the fish is large and tasty, the chips are like what I used to be served as a child. This chippy is the best around and the people running it are always kind and helpful. I love this chippy 10 out of 10 Cheers my dears Oo'ar.

The battered sausage I got must have been from the day before and recooked. I could hardly cut it never mind eat it. I won't be going back there again!

Some of the worst fish and chips ever. Fish had some nasty dense texture and didn’t taste like cod at all. Batter so greasy it peeled off when fish unwrapped. Chips absolutely swimming in grease- Soggy and hard. Product was not freshly cooked as the hotel counter was full of pre cooked food- total waste of £27.00 It’s a shame as two years ago when we last Are from here it was wonderful- what’s happened?

Popped in here tonight, as we are staying at the travel lodge, next door. Clad we did, the food is great, the staff are very helpful, Fantastic burger meal, One of the best chippy I've been too, we will be back again one day. Thank you for 4 great meals.

I had a large cod and chips. It was lovely. Great batter which is always important. Friendly staff. They take card payments. I would definitely be a regular but I live in Wales. Next time I'm in the Glastonbury area, I'll be paying a visit.

One of the finest Fish and Chip Shops in the country. There are some that come close but I am prepared to travel the 5 miles to sample their wares.

Food was overcooked. Unfortunately after having it both my wife and I felt ill. That is enough for us to not go back.

Just had a portion of chips. Other half said just get one between us and boy.....was he right! Massive portion of really tasty, and not at all greasy, chips for £2.10. Was quite busy so must be popular. We will call in again when in the area.

The wife and l had fish and chips and onion rings she said good but I had lovely little time in the TOILET for about an hour so no I couldn't say I was impressed

We stumbled across this brilliant little chippy on Fri 6th Dec,it was very busy which is a re-assuring sign, the food was delicious, well priced, the ladies serving were quick, polite and friendly, I must add that the Large Fish was indeed very large (unlike a lot of other "over-exaggerated" chippies), and it tasted like the fish you get from the coast; fresh and very tasty, not bland and flakey. Deffo worth a visit, if staying in Glasto.

Still the best, most friendly plaice in the area. Just love it!

I am ashamed to say that I have lived in Glastonbury for many years and never been to Wirral Plaice. However, that changed yesterday when I called in for fish and chips to feed three of us. Cod was succulant with lovely batter. Not too thick. Huge amount of chips (enough left over for a chip butty). Staff were welcoming and friendly. Will definately be returning.

Very good fish and chips, you get a large potion with value for money, staff are very polite and helpful and would recommend you try them out.

Called in last night, for 2 haddock, one chips & 2 x (small) curry sauces. Prices are about normal (over £16) - but sadly, this was not up to your usual standard. The chips - well every other one was raw! Unedible. Thank goodness we had decided to share a portion,. The haddock, although cooked to order, was crispy on each end, but soggy in the middle, and the fish was really chewy & tough, not flaking away like it usually does. We stay at one of the nearby touring sites a few times a year, & have always used this fish & chip shop, but last night most of it ended in the nearby bin, such a waste. Because we have had good food in the past, I have rated it average - but this was really poor.

A Yorkshire woman, weaned on Harry Ramsdan's in 1940's - the team at Wirral Plaice come close to the best fish and chips fryers I have ever tasted - and lovely friendly service thrown in for no extra charge! Highly recommended

When I ask for fish. And ask if it was cook in batter as good as Whitby scabough Bridlington the answer was even better No it wasn't it was not cook photo to prove it

Called in for lunch on Tuesday 14th May 2019. Premises don't look much from the outside as it is on the edge of an industrial/retail area however it makes up for it with excellent fish and chips served by friendly staff. Never mind the looks, taste the quality!

Popped in for our Friday night treat large cod and chips when they say large they mean large it was a shark!!! And a chicken wrap all lovely and fresh and hot Great food lovely staff.. oh and don’t let the queue put you off they bust that like a boss!!!

We order by phone, then pop down and collect. Everything is fresh and crispy, not too greasy, the large fish are really big. Reccomend pea fritters.

A great little fish and chip shop. The pieces of fish you get are massive (a normal cod is enough for me and I have quite an appetite) and the batter is nice and crispy; the same goes for the sausages. The chips are nice and not too greasy like many other places. The prices are normal for a fish and chip shop and the quality certainly makes it worth the money here.

I wish the parking was better and smaller appetites were catered for but its easily the best and most accessible chip shop in Glastonbury.

I wouldn't havent minded the fact that cod was sold undercooked and tastes bitty almost of sand. But when and my son came back to respond they would rather start an argument then give us a small refund back. One of the worst experiences I've had in a chip shop. 0/5 P.s they checked the fish with a thermometer and they mention it was 3° below as well as it not even eating in that area so the core temperature should been higher which even she the owner mentioned.

Traveled to Wirral plaice for dinner last night it was yet again amazing we travel from outside frome to go there for our dinner most weeks and never fails us.. generous portions fish is always succulent crispy batter chips are amazing the hill meal was delicious !!

Saturday night fish and chips in Glastonbury, we were recommended this plaice during a heated debate on Facebook about the best fish and chips in town! We've been to Knights every time so far, so wanted to compare.

This is our favourite chippy. Recommend the massive haddock and delicious pea fritters. Ring ahead to order, then go and collect.

An excellent traditional fish and chip shop with a greater variety of fish than most. Well served with great banter. A take away that makes giving up treats impossible.
