Wilsons – A Culinary Experience Worth Every Moment Having recently relocated to the Bristol area, my friends generously gifted us a voucher for Wilsons, a Michelin-starred gem in Clifton. Our visit turned out to be an unforgettable experience—though it didn’t begin on the best note. After a drink at the Red Monkey next door, we arrived at Wilsons about seven minutes before our reservation, assuming we could wait at the bar if our table wasn’t ready. Instead, we were asked to wait outside in the cold, which was less than ideal and not the level of hospitality one might expect from a single-starred restaurant. It slightly dampened our initial impression, (was I annoyed – you bet ya). However, any disappointment quickly faded once we stepped inside and experienced what Wilsons truly has to offer. The first thing that struck me was the relaxed, almost homey atmosphere—it felt as though we had been invited into a friend’s kitchen. The menu was an absolute triumph: thoughtfully designed, beautifully presented, and bursting with creativity. Every detail was thoughtfully explained by the incredibly knowledgeable staff, whose passion for the cuisine saw them busting with pride as you meandered your way through this culinary garden of Eden. The food itself was nothing short of spectacular. Each plate was a masterpiece, both visually and in flavor, with exquisitely balanced tastes that lingered long after each bite. This was fine dining without the pretension—just incredibly talented people doing what they do best at the highest level. I honestly can’t recall the last time I enjoyed a dining experience this much—perhaps my first visit to The Hand and Flowers would come close. I considered detailing each dish here, but I believe that would take away from the adventure for those lucky enough to visit. Suffice it to say, we were so overjoyed with our experience that we immediately booked two tables of four later in the year to share this gem with friends. If you do one thing this year, get yourself a seat at Wilsons—you will not be disappointed. Is it cheap? No. But as with anything in life, the best experiences come at a price. You’re not just buying dinner; you’re investing in an unforgettable culinary journey. Go, enjoy, and be grateful you had the chance.

I’m not one for writing reviews but I was so impressed that I needed to do so for here. Had a stressful journey of over an hour to get here & immediately knew looking at the menu it was going to be worth it . We had the full lunch tasting menu & thought the flavours of every dish were awesome. It had been on my radar a while & so glad we finally visited & will make a return trip as the season changes .

I had my first time visit to Wilsons with my partner recently, it was a Thursday in February so the restaurant wasn't too busy and the atmosphere was quiet and relaxed. We enjoyed the full set menu and each course was absolutely delicious, the bread course was an absolute stand out as well as the delicious fresh sourdough and butter that we were expecting these were accompanied by all manner of tasty goodies. Everyone working there was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience even better. We left feeling satisfied and full.

Second division for me. Admittedly I may have encountered a fixed menu that didn't suit, but a great many other drawbacks made this an expensive mediocre event. My last Michelin star outing had been to Bruton's amazing Osip restaurant, so perhaps my expectations were set too high. Each dish was explained in what sounded like a shouting match against the cacophony of the restaurant's background noise. Even the youngsters amongst us struggled with the hardest seating in town and I didn't feel the waiting staff had their hearts truly in it. Yes, of course, the Christmas period may well have been taking it's inevitable toll. The soup starters, both mainstream and vegan, were superb but I prefer my highlights further down the menu. No recommendation from me I'm afraid but maybe booking well away from the holiday period can offer redemption.

Went for lunch with my 2 sisters. Had the larger tasting menu paired with the wine flight. Every course tasted heavenly and pairing was great. Philip the sommelier was at the top of his game 🤓, each pairing was explained in detail and so were the courses. I will definitely go back with a lot more friends. Oh, the sourdough bread & butter made in house was to die for 😋😋😋😋

Wow, Wilson's was truly fantastic! Absolutely loved everything about it - great atmosphere (casual which we like), passionate and professional staff, and delicious and interesting food. They only serve tasting menu's here (no choice) so if you are a fussy eater, don't go. But if you are a foodie, you should definitely go! We had the set lunch menu which was divine. Thank you Phil for fitting us in at the last minute - it was much appreciated and we will definitely return if we are ever back in Bristol.

2nd visit to Wilsons and found it just as good as 1st. Food and cooking quality was excellent with nice atmosphere and ambience, with service being very professional and attentive. Wife and 1 had 7 course menu at £73 each and was interesting and varied and for the quality very good value. Wine list again was varied and for me as non drinker the homemade soft drinks were as good as I have tasted anywhere. For anyone who enjoys fine dining this is as good as anywhere we have found in the Avon/Somerset area. Ps They also run bread shop about 50 yards away.Try their Foccacia. It is so good you would believe you were in Italy.

I regret to say the quality of the food was very mixed. Some delicious, some really not good. Tried to engage in some constructive criticism with the restaurant but they weren't interested, seemingly blaming our dietary requirements (which are nothing radical or unusual in 2024.)

Absolutely amazing food , reasonably priced for a tasting menu of this quality. A long way from home but I will make the effort to return .The staff were knowledgeable helpful and the right level of attentive. As we were unsure of which wine we wanted ,the waitress listened to us and then bought samples for us to try before we invested. The chefs all worked amazingly hard and were very accommodating in regards to our curiosity about their tiny kitchen ,letting us peer in and generally get in their way with much good humour . An all together magical experience which I highly recommend .

Wilson's is my favourite restaurant in Bristol. We visited to celebrate our civil partnership because Wilson's was part of our story of how I met my partner 6 years ago. I love how different Wilson's colleagues explain each dish and I learn more about new ingredients ( for me) that rarely are on the supermarket shelves, especially those grown on the Wilson's farm. Enthusiastic, passionate care for how food is grown, used and cooked is one of the reasons why I love eating here. Along with the delicious surprises in every dish. Thank you Wilson's. As always a memorable meal hugely enjoyed.

1st visit to Wilsons. Having retired 4 yrs ago wife and I do Fine Dining as a Hobby and we have been lucky to go to most top places in the area. Wilsons was certainly one of the best we have been to. Everything was excellent from quality, service ,price, ambience. With a 6 course offer for £73 pp or a 3 course offer at £35 all options were covered. Certainly on a par with other Michelin star places such as Osip,Olive Tree etc. Cannot speak highly enough of whole experience and if you like Fine Dining this is 1 place you must go to.

We were given a meal as a Xmas present so we’re looking forward to a different eating experience. We ate on a Thursday lunch time so there was no choice of menu. 5 or 7 coarse tasting menu only - no alternatives! Oyster ice cream and rhubarb to start followed by bread and butter? All drinks expensive. Meal and service efficient but only one member of staff interested in engaging with customers. Wine at £13 for large glass full of sediments. Just feel that from our experience there a lot better places in Bristol to eat at this cost

Couldn’t fault a thing. Delicious locally grown food, mostly by the proprietors. Very tasty small bites but left feeling comfortably satisfied. The wine pairing included interesting wines we wouldn’t have otherwise tried. E.g. Orange wine and Saki. All very palatable and enjoyable. Service was perfect balance of informal but knowledgeable.

My husband and I visited Wilson's last year for dinner to mark a special occasion. Some of the dishes were delicious, but others were underwhelming (i.e. a bundle of herbs and lettuce as a starter). The portion sizes were very small and we both ended up leaving hungry and bought some food on the way home. Perhaps it would be fine for a lunch, but wasn't filling enough for dinner and we left disappointed. We don't have huge appetites either.

Superb from beginning to end. Nothing fussy - everything on the plate for a reason. The oyster, trout and Guinea fowl (especially the cabbage-clad bonbon) were the highlights but no weak points at all. Did think that maybe a bit more cake on the final dessert and a bit less parsnip cream (and I love parsnip) might have balanced better but it took till the last course to realise I hadn’t found a flaw anywhere. Great variety of wines in the pairing. Informal friendly service works best in this sort of place - mainly that worked, and I’m not going to criticise those who weren’t entirely laid back. Have already recommended to a few people and would come back in a heartbeat

Ate on a Friday eve at 20.30, arrived at 8.20 but previous table occupants had not finished, restsurant is very small and nowhere to wait so were pointed in the direction of the next door pub. Table was ready on our return and we were given a glass of wine, food was served quickley and efficiently with an explanation of what it was. We had informed them of a fish allergy at the time of booking a day before our reservation. However, we were given a fish based accompaniment, when this was pointed out it was removed from the table by an embarrassed waiter, the restaurant is small and was noisy so a sigh of relief was ensued. Staff were pleasant but Its a place we will not be revisiting.. was it value for money, sadly not in my opinion £13 for a glass of wine is a little excessive

Formal/informal. It’s an informal setting but there is a feeling of occasion when you arrive. Loved the welcome. The bread and butter is to die for. I knew everything else would be of a standard once I started there. I really enjoyed the wine pairing. Love the farm to table aspect knowing the food was freshly picked and grown with love. Everything I ate felt special. Definitely a strong recommendation. And then the final bit of good news. The bill. Loved that part.

We went here on last Friday for my birthday meal, it was a lovely birthday treat from my cousin. We heard a lot about this place and finally managed to come and eat here. We sat down and in around 10 minutes we already got the first course... but nobody has asked us for any drinks, so we got the drinks after the second course but only because we asked if we could order some drinks. The food is amazing, a lot of flavours and many surprises. The dishes were small but enough for us. My favourite was the trout dish, unfortunately I had 2 big bones in the trout. I told the waiter and the only thing he did was saying "oh sorry" and that' it..... I do hope they understand how dangerous it can be. So for everybody else: be careful with the trout dish. The young lady who was working that evening was very friendly and knows a lot about the menu. Unfortunately I won't be giving the 5th star because of the service we received, I really do expect a bit more for a Michelin Green restaurant. I would definitely come back but won't rush for it.

I make absolutely no apologies for being repetitive in my reviews of this absolutely outstanding restaurant. The tasting menu with accompanying wine flight represents outstanding value - and is my definite “go to” in all sorts of situations ( birthdays, get togethers - almost any excuse I can think of really) The only changes from my previous visit ( in May) was replacing the Scallop and Turbot dishes with Chalk Stream Trout and Red Mullet dishes. Naturally the same impeccable standards were maintained - I happen to like Trout and Red Mullet VERY much…maybe, just maybe, slightly more than Scallop and Turbot? I certainly wouldn’t like to live “on the difference” - it is a very close call. I simply cannot recommend this restaurant too highly - if you like good food you will almost invariably have been here. If you haven’t - what on Earth are you waiting for???

Another visit, and I could repeat what I wrote in my previous review in March: the kitchen here is absolutely brilliant for the savoury dishes. The inventiveness, balance, perfect execution and quality of produce are top level, from the carrots with fermented green tomatoes, to the Orkney scallops with Kobu turnip and preserved truffle cream, to the BBQ pollock with celeriac , onion and vin jaune (a stunningly elegant dish), to the fallow deer with beetroots in two ways (smoked and pureed I think) and quince. Not to forget the wonderful bread and butter. Unfortunately, the only relatively weak point in my opinion remains the sweet part, which is a set of certainly not bad, but rather uninspiring "creamy things in a bowl". They try to make them interesting with interesting ingredients but, sorry, a seaweed flan remains a seaweed creamy thing in a bowl that does not render justice to the art of patisserie, at least not at the same level as the previous dishes. The wine list is interesting, service is super, prices have increased like everything else but remain reasonable for the quality and the city.

They have a farm which they grow most of their veg etc, and you can tell by the quality of the ingredients. Don’t forget to try there in house cordial drinks, makes for a different drink instead of usual soft drinks options, or alcohol if driving. They also have a bread shop a couple of doors down where you can purchase the most tasteful sourdough bread you will ever found.
