One of the longer established restaurants in the popular Wapping Wharf development, this has been here for a number of years and has a Michelin accolade proudly displayed outside for every year since 2018. There’s a minimal amount of seating inside and further under cover seating outside which we took advantage of as it was actually quite mild and dry for once. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, and we were certainly pleased with the wine she suggested, a Gavi from Piedmonte. We opted for the seven course tasting menu which you need to book in advance, and unusually is unwritten. I appreciate with tasting menus you don’t get a choice, but I’ve always had them printed before so you can actually see what you’re going to be getting but here it just turns up and is described to you as it’s served. That said, from looking at the a la carte menu when I got home, they were all listed there, so perhaps the chef just serves whatever he thinks he is going to have a surplus of on the night. Everything we had was really very good, with the highlights perhaps being the Smoked trout with golden beetroot, buttermilk and horseradish or the Hake with crushed Cornish new potatoes, dill butter, preserved lemon and gem lettuce. That said, it was difficult to choose between them, they were all of a very high standard. They don’t really seem to do bold and punchy flavours here, it’s more about using top quality ingredients and letting them speak for themselves, but there was certainly nothing that disappointed. Trying to pay was an absolute nightmare, it seems that they don’t have wi-fi at the restaurant and instead try to hop on to somebody else’s network downstairs. There were continual connection problems, and it must have taken us 15 – 20 minutes for it to eventually go through. Quite often we’ll be in a rush to leave the restaurant to catch a bus, although fortunately that wasn’t the case this time. They really do need to sort this out though, it must be just as frustrating for the waitress as the customers. Overall though, despite that hiccup, a very enjoyable meal and highly recommended.

Location was nice, good space between tables, heater and blankets for the outside. Service was impeccable in everything. Food was good, some dishes really good, I do like some “stronger” tastes but is a personal thing. I done the 5 courses unwritten degustation menu. Really enjoyed the first course (the tomatoes were amazing with the onglet), and last the lamb with beans. I give 4 stars instead of 5 because I think generally the portions were a bit small, in couple of occasions (marmalade with the cheese or the orange in the dessert) the portion was really tiny.

We had the 7 course tasting menu, just sublime and good value at £55. Every course was explained in detail when served. Excellent food, attentive knowledgeable staff.

Box-e is one of the best restaurants in Bristol. It has been our favorite restaurant for a few years now and it never dissapoints! High quality local produce always cooked to perfection, lovely staff and a great atmosphere. Value for money is on point too, would recommend to everybody!

Being rated highly on TripA meant we ended up at this restaurant. Yes it’s based in a container, but this gives it in reality a real buzz. Then……the chef and his food- asparagus starters, hake ( wonderful), and the desserts, rice pudding, panacotta with black treacle and caramelised banana all exceptional. Wonderful evening aided by friendly, capable staff, Chris and Stephanie.

Forgot to review from couple months ago! I think you need a 4.5 rating here - the food is good quality and cooked well , had a couple of the tasting menu items a little lacklustre! However the fish courses were amazing. The servers were very attentive and recommended some lovely wines! We sat in the outside area and were very impressed with the surroundings. And lay out of the terrace area! Would return!!

Highly recommend this to everyone. We went for the 7 course taster and wine flight options. All courses were delicious and enjoyable. Quality food, that left you wanting more. Such skill in cooking and sublime presentation. Glad we did this for a 50th Birthday celebration but not waiting that long to go back. Just truly something to be experienced!

We had a phenomenal meal at Box-E yesterday. We were celebrating my birthday so chose the tasting menu and wine flight. All courses were absolutely delicious, but particular standouts for me were the hake and the chocolate mousse. The service was exceptional - among best we've ever had!

Amazing food really enjoyed the whole experience if you find yourself in Bristol it’s definitely hugely recommended.

We went to Bristol to visit this lovely restaurant for lunch in middle of March. The chef overheard us saying it was my birthday and improvised with a candle in my dessert, (a very nice thing to do). We had the golden beetroot with smoked trout for starters, a very nice dish. I always go for fish for my main dish and so we choose the Hake with crushed Jersey Royals, monk's beard and preserved lemons which was perfectly cooked and very well thought out flavour combinations. We rounded off the meal with chilled cinnamon rice pudding, Griottines cherries and crumble and my partner had the vanilla pannacotta, Yorkshire forced rhubarb and stem ginger. We've been here before and and will come back again for the amazing food and service. Truly a gem of a restaurant.

Ubicazione singolare, in un paio di container navali ora adibiti - assieme ad altri esercizi - a ristorazione lungo il Whapping Wharf, la zona turistico/industriale dei vecchi cantieri. Si puo' cenare in terrazza, ma anche all'interno del locale dove si ritaglia un piccolo spazio. La nostra scelta: Zuppa di porri e patate con capesante di Brixham e tartufo nero: una delizia. Nasello, patate Jersey Royals, barba dei frati, limone e basilico: eccezionale qualita' degli ingredienti. Pannacotta alla vaniglia, rabarbaro dello Yorkshire, biscotti sbriciolati al ginger, eccellente dessert per chiudere la cena. Fra le possibilita' a calice, abbiamo scelto un ottimo Riesling della Mosella. Tuttomulto bene, da applausi anche per il rapporto prezzo qualita' .

Box-E ticked all the boxes for creativity, flavour, freshness, ingredients and friendliness. A restaurant that properly caters for Gluten Free customers without compromise. Highly recommended

We visited Box E on a cold March evening. We were totally aware that the restaurant is in an old shipping container - a couple a gusts of cold air blew in but that was to be expected and it didn’t affect our experience whatsoever. We opted for the tasting menu with the wine pairing. We enjoyed every single course - each dish was full of flavour. The wines were perfectly paired. The staff were very nice and we will definitely return. It’s a quirky place but that’s the whole point!

Amazing food and service. It was incredibly rainy and cold on the day we visited but the staff ensured that we had heaters and a patio heater to ensure we were comfortable. Food was incredible and would definitely return!!!!! The wine selection was exceptional and we had a lovely meal.

This was a wonderful meal and experience. We had booked a table in the outside undercover area. Prior to our visit I was concerned about being cold, however it was toasty and warm due to the heaters..and really a lovely experience to be on the balcony area. The service was second to none…perfect timing and just the right amount of attention. Our food was delicious. We ordered a 3 course a la carte selection; each of the dishes were well balanced, FULL of flavour, and beautifully presented. I can thoroughly recommend the Charred hispi cabbage, smoked trout, lemon butter… flavour bomb!! The hake and lamb dishes were delicious, and although I had the chocolate mousse with passion fruit (which was chocolate heaven), my partner had the Chilled cinnamon rice pudding, Griottines cherries, crumble… this was out of this world! We drank a bottle of Riesling Devon-Schiefer 2021 by Meulenhof, Mosel .. this was. A great recommendation by Tessa. Great food, superb prices, lovely atmosphere… can’t wait to go back and try the tasting menu. Highly recommended

It's a nice restaurant, however we had the tasting menu and we were very underwhelmed. Started off really well with lovely velevety soup but unfortunately downhill with no dishes that really stood out or flavours that really wow'd us. One of the courses was a single piece of cheese, which when you go to these places, you'd expect a bit more if its a tasting menu.

“Underwhelming and disappointing” My thoughts are exactly the same as a recent review entitled the same. Although we didn’t have the vegetarian tasting menu, but both had the meat/fish version with the wine pairing. The staff really need to “warm up” a little and be less robotic and more chatty & interactive. We were so excited to dine at Box E as a belated Christmas gift, however sadly we won’t be returning…it was a very “average” meal.

Excellent service, and tasting menu was great. Pace was good, drinks were nice, brilliant atmosphere and music was perfect.

This was supposed to be a birthday treat & I was so looking forward to it after we hadn't been able to get a table the last time we came to Bristol. However we were very disappointed. To be fair, the food was all OK. Nothing was bad as such or we'd have sent it back. But none of it was very special or stood out at all either. It had to be the blandest tasting menu I've ever had. It also didn't help that several of the courses were quite textureless too so it all just seemed a bit dull. The food looked OK on the plate but again nothing with that wow factor. I also have to say that as a vegetarian, mine was particularly disappointing. In this day & age there's no excuse for serving bland & boring vegetarian food. A lot of my dishes were just variations of a piece of vegetable on a plate. Very little thought as to balanced meals & adding some protein for sustenance. There was also an overuse of a lot of sour elements across several of the courses (a bit of overuse of balsamic drizzle didn't help) which just left us with indegestion & overpowered any other flavours. The first soup course actually would have been quite nice if it had texture added, eg some crispy cauliflower, fried onions or even a piece of bread as the flavour was good but it had just been pureed to high hell. There was a roasted squash course with some toasted pumpkin seeds which was actually quite pleasant. But the rest just blurred into one. My husband also said the meat dishes were nothing stand out either & the quality of the cuts was a bit tough in places. Added to this the service just felt wooden with no sense of a personal touch. My husband had actually mentioned that it was my birthday when booking but there was no acknowledgement of that. After each course we were asked how the food was & my luke warm reaction to it all (along the lines of 'it was ok') must have been obvious but they carried on the same each time regardless. I don't think it would have mattered what I said. There was no warmth or attempt to engage us & it felt like they were back & forth just saying the exact same thing to every customer. When one customer asked to keep the door open they just did so too without checking with the poor people sat next to & opposite the door who had been looking uncomfortable each time it open & closed all night as it was freezing outside. We were lucky to have a cozy spot in the corner but still got the occasional gust & our ears popping each time someone moved through the door. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to add a bit of ventilation to the container to reduce some of these issues. Towards the end I also ordered a coffee to try & perk myself up a bit from my state of underwhelm. Even that was dull as dishwater; I might as well have had instant decaff. The price I have to say was very reasonable for a tasting menu, but it's a shame they seemed to skimp on quality, variation & ingredients to make up for this. It still felt like a lot of money for such an underwhelming experience & even if it was half the price we wouldn't be tempted to go back. I've no idea why our experience seems to have been so different to a lot of other reviewers. We eat out a lot & are well travelled so maybe our bar is just too high,i don't know. However we've had some really amazing experiences & meals in other parts of Bristol (often for a fraction of the price) so not sure that's the full story here...

Great spot for dinner! we had the taster menu with wine flight. Immaculately presented and perfectly portioned, we enjoyed every course. If I was pushed to pick a favorite it was the smoked trout which was smokey and sweet. Everything was cooked to impeccably and matched perfectly with the wine. The whole experience was great value for money, I have paid a lot more for a lot less. Very casual spot, you definitely don't feel like you need to dress up. will be back.

What a great restaurant. Although it is very small and quirky, the experience was terrific. The staff were great, the food was well cooked and there was plenty of choice of wine by the glass. I'd go again if I was back in Bristol

Every dish was carefully prepared, with balanced flavours and textures, from a velvety celeriac soup with a scallop sliver and curry aroma to start, to a delightfully wobbly and almost creamy (as it should be) pannacotta to end, through a beetroot and spelt risotto, a smoked trout with hispi cabbage, a duck with lentils and a cod with butter beans. Nothing stood out however, with dishes lacking a bit of oomph and personality and flavours tending to muted If in terms of food this was a solid 4 out of 5, what rather destroyed the day for us was the room: with below zero outside, a metal box with no proper heating, gusts of icy air continuously coming in from the opening of the door (for the outside service), a poorly functioning dimplex just spreading the cold air against us, was no fun. In fact, we realised we would have better off on the terrace, with the heating lamps beside diners, than at our table inside right in front of the door. We were unlucky, as I guess that on most other days of the year it's tolerable, but I'm reporting our experience. Prices are fair, service was friendly but not very caring. They could clearly see we were cold, yet they kept leaving the door open.

Absolutely brilliant meal, technically accomplished with no dip in quality all the way through the tasting courses. It came with a better wine pairing than I’ve had at certain 2 star Michelin restaurants. My preference to not have a sweet wine was met easily. Would return in a heartbeat. It was cold out on the balcony, but the food arrived hot, the heaters were on full blast and the wine certainly helped. The staff are friendly and relaxed.

The BOX-E restaurant in Bristol far exceeded my expectations! From the moment I walked in I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff was attentive, friendly and made me feel comfortable throughout the meal. The highlight was of course the food. Each dish was a work of art in itself, both in taste and presentation. The ingredients were fresh and of the highest quality, and the combination of flavors was to die for. It's obvious that the chef and his team have great passion for what they do. This restaurant is an absolute must for anyone visiting Bristol. I can't wait to come back!

As far as food goes this is one of the best experiences I've ever had. The food was incredible. The service was heartfelt and passionate which really added to the experience. I cannot recommend BOX-E highly enough. We are real foodies and this blew me away. Thank you BOX-E.

I wondered how a 'posh' dinner (e.g. not inexpensive tasting menu selection with wine flight) was going to work based out of a 2nd storey shipping container. The industrial location didn't detract from the mood (friendly and genuine serving staff, lively and bubbly mix of customers) or the presentation of the dishes. The menu was considerately matched with the wine, including novel variants of typical grapes and some refreshing and remarkable picks (although I thought the addition of a perry to a wine flight was a marmite decision). Stand outs from the food, the cauliflower soup, sounds banal, tasted like a rich dream. Cabbage and trout, unctuous and salty. Would return very happily.

One of the best meals I have ever had. We went for the select menu and it was all a surprise which was amazing. I'm vegan and my partner isn't, there is rarely a place we can both enjoy a meal to this level together and both enjoy it so much. The chef can do any allergy or diet choice so recommend everyone to go for a special occasion

I had an exceptional dining experience at Box E. The food was truly outstanding, complemented perfectly by a superb selection of wines. The service was top-notch, adding to the overall enjoyment of the evening. What truly impressed me was the skill of the chef, who single-handedly created a culinary masterpiece. Highly recommended!

So off we toddled down to Bristol for the weekend. Managed to get a reservation here for the Saturday night. Went for the unwritten taster menu. Great value and great product. I could wax lyrical about every dish that came before us perfectly plated and so pleasing to the eye. Highlights the smoked trout, duck and the pano cotta. But every dish was stunning. The service was equally great. Unfussy, friendly and knowledgeable. If I were to be really really picky, we are simple folk and do like to ruin our selves with coffee and an amaretto or such after dinner. Coffee was great but lacked choice on things to go with. However in no way did that detract from the spectacular food and service that we were privileged to enjoy.

We had an impressive dinner. We opted for the chef's tasting menu, as we wanted some surprises. They served us some incredible dishes where each course wasn't isolated, the flavors had a delightful connection. We really enjoyed it and can't wait for the Fall season menu.

Went for post-graduation dinner with family. Lovely food and service, good wines and reasonably priced. Only slight challenge on evening we were there was concert over the water, but this is not a regular occurence

Having waited a long time to try box E, my partner treated me to the Tasting Menu and Wine Pairings as a birthday surprise. The meal was exceptional with well presented and flavourful dishes. The wine pairings were excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. An all round fantastic experience!

Our meal was faultless! We enjoyed every course of the tasting menu. We could not decide which was our favourite. The waiter bought us an extra pudding as the chefs panna cotta is out of this world. Good value. Great friendly service.

Box-E has never dissapointed in the 3-4 times I've been for dinner here. We had the 7 course tasting menu for dinner on Saturday. With the weather being so glorious we sat outside and had a lovely relaxed atmosphere with the buzz of Whapping Wharf around us. The menu did not disappoint, from first course to the last it only got better with each dish. and at £55 per head I think this is the best value for money tasting menu in Bristol The service is always superb, the waiting staff were friendly, attentive and open for questions. The only downside of sitting outside is not being able to see the chef in action, which was a highlight when we went a few years ago (but obviously this isn't exactly a hardship!) If we could give 6 stars we would!

What an amazing restaurant. Very tiny inside but more seating on the terrace..but still a great vibe. We were 4 adults for 3 course dinner. The food was superb, really fresh and tasty. Its a great night out there. I would warmly recommend it.

We went as a group for the tasting menu. Half of us returned home hungry. The tasting menu itself wasn't that amazing either - we've had much better tasting menus in Bristol. We did the wine pairing which was okay.

Despite a plethora of spectacular restaurants to choose from at Wapping Wharf, selecting Box-E for this year’s birthday lunch was an easy decision to make having read and heard so many tremendous reviews. Consequently, to say I had high expectations is an understatement. Nevertheless, not only did Box-E meet these but blew all my expectations out the water. I had one of the best meals I have ever had. Let’s begin with the space. Set in the delightful cargo units at Wapping Wharf, the restaurant includes a cosy indoor section that isn’t too noisy at all and a picturesque outdoor seating area which, with the aid from heaters, keeps one warm even on a cold crisp day. We selected the outdoor section and were very pleased as it was extremely quiet and felt private despite its public setting. Next the menu. You know with a compact menu like this there is no where to hide, but each dish is special with a lot of care and consideration going into every plate. As each dish is so varied and unique you can guarantee that you will find something on the menu to tantalise your imagination. So no matter if you’re vegetarian, pescatarian or have no dietary requirements you will be able to enjoy something from this most remarkable of menus featuring seasonal delights of magical excellence. But what about the service, well it’s second to none. Tess makes each and every guest feel very special, with a friendly welcome and a wonderfully warm personality. Tess just made everyone feel so relaxed and joyful throughout the meal, the perfect balance between attentive without ever being bothersome. To put the cherry on top of the cake, when my dessert came they even wrote happy birthday on the plate in chocolate, what more can you ask for. Now for the most important aspect of all, the food. What more can I say than fabulous! Everything was cooked to pure and utter perfection, seasoned beautifully to ensure the wonderful flavours of the dish were flawlessly heightened. Furthermore, each plate had the most faultless combination of textures making every mouthful a pure delight. Living with a top class cook that delivers delicious food daily means I am always critical of restaurant meals as they often don’t reach the standards I am use to at home. Which makes me sound very stuck up, however I hope you can appreciate thats it’s difficult not to compare. But Box-E I can safely say managed to surpass my high standards test with flying colours.

I had a lovely time dining at BOX-E… The place is a bit difficult to find by Google Maps, but I eventually found it by going around the back and up the stairs of the very last shipping container. The servers were very friendly and welcoming and provided me with a great drink recommendation. I did the tasting menu (7 courses), which was an astounding value at only £50. The standout dish was the smoked trout and my least favorite dish was the cheese/cracker plate (as you can see from the images, presentation was a bit sloppy). The environment was cozy and quaint, though the majority of seating was outside (more suitable for warmer weather). Overall, I had a fine experience at BOX-E and I’d recommend it to anyone in Bristol looking for a unique and affordable tasting menu experience.

Came here since it was recommended by Michelin and it did not disappoint. Flavors and taste blended so well together on every dish. I absolutely fell in love with the rice pudding dessert at the end!

My wife and I had an excellent meal. We chose the pairing menu whereby we had superb food with a selected wine. Not just served but the full repertoire of where it came from and how it was produced. Another highly recommended restaurant worthy of a second visit.

One of the best dining experiences in Bristol - everything was perfect. A fantastic selection of wine, superb and unique dishes and even a whole vegan menu. The highlight was the duck main course, and the mushroom starter. But the menu is constantly changing with the seasons! Highly recommend but definitely book early!
