Ate a vegan tasting menu here and was absolutely blown away. Can’t recommend places highly enough that go the extra mile to accommodate people’s food requirements. The waiters talked us through everything as the table had mixed meals, which was a nice touch. The fact they are able to cater to a vegan diet with a custom menu was incredible, just have to let them know in advance of your booking. The food itself was incredible. The flavours packed into these dishes and the presentation were next level. Everything was done so well. A quality fine-dining vegan meal!

You could easily walk past Bulrush as you’re wandering around Cotham…but don’t! The tasting menu was absolutely stunning! It included: Carrot XO doughnut, trout & langoustine croustade, pork jowl & rhubarb Montgomery cheddar, onion marmalade, sourdough, savoury Danish Celeriac, goat’s curd, kumquat Orkney scallop, katsuobushi, blood orange BBQ Monkfish, yuzu kosho, Champagne & mussel sauce Jacob Hogget, Isle of Wight tomato & kombu, barbecued aubergine Blackcurrant leaf sorbet, meringue, redcurrant Rice pudding ice cream, almond, gooseberry Sea buckthorn Madeleine, strawberry & creme fraiche The wine flight complemented the delicious food brilliantly. A lovely atmosphere with very friendly staff. I can’t wait to try the winter menu!

Absolutely incredible experience having the tasting menu at Bulrush this evening! The non-alcoholic drinks pairings were incredible, especially the hibiscus shrub, the rosehip cordial and the feral beetroot wine with szechuan peppercorns! The highlights of the food for me were the consomme, everything in the snack course, especially the pickled carrot doughnut thing, the scallop dish, the savoury danish, and beef fat spread from the bread course, the insanely tasty lamb sausage and the rice pudding ice cream pudding course! My only very tiny negative is most dishes were ever so slightly too salty! I was also not a fan on the oyster emulsion... Lovely super attentive, friendly, knowledgeable staff. A really wonderful, fascinating and special experience! Sometimes I really didn't know what I was eating, in the best possible way! A total party in my mouth!

A really delightful experience. The food was excellent and staff very attentive and nice. The wine pairing was amazing, with some really unusual and different wines that paired brilliantly with the courses. The pea course and accompanying wine was definitely the star of the show. We enjoyed an exquisite meal at Bulrush, one of the best I’ve eaten in my life. Incredible attention to detail with a plethora of tastes, textures, colours & temperatures. So creative, with a clear focus on minimal waste & the use of local ingredients & providers. We had a delicious bottle of rose wine from the Cotswolds! When I go out for a meal I measure the ‘treat-value’ as something that I wouldn’t make at home. We had countless dishes that I wouldn’t ever begin to create at home! It is very clear why Bulrush continues to be recognised with a Michelin star. The service was perfect - an explanation every time a dish was brought out (chefs coming out of the super-calm open kitchen to talk at times) but I never felt as though our evening was disturbed in any way. All the staff are incredibly knowledgeable & were able to instantly answer any questions & they clearly ‘took the lead’ from us, chatting when we asked anything but otherwise giving us space. Nothing was too much trouble - we arrived soaking from the rain & were quickly brought cloths to help us dry off! I can’t recommend Bulrush highly enough. It was an incredibly special treat for a birthday. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much to everyone at Bulrush for an evening that I’ll always remember.

This was the first fine dining resteraunt my wife and I visited, back in 2021. The experience was totally out of this world and launched our food obsession to new heights. Therefore, it was only right that we came back to celebrate our wedding! There were personal touches scattered throughout the dinner, from both the kitchen and the warm, attentive front of house and it really was the perfect celebratory meal. In the last 3 years our memories of the food from 2021 have reached almost mythical status, with none of the subsequent incredible meals quite matching our memories of the Bulrush. We approached with palpable excitement and an edge of anticipation, unsure whether the food could possibly live up to the standard of our memories... Of course it could! It was out of this world. Complex, surprising, fun, beautiful and most of all just completely delicious. Wonderful wines served the perfect accompaniment and overall it was the best culinary experience we've had, even improving upon our first "mythical" visit. Go, go, go! Then go again, as we shall be.

Went for a wedding anniversary dinner. Food was ok. Scallop course was the best. Wine flight was underwhelming with some particularly vile Perry. Dessert wines with cheese were the best but the additional cheese course is overpriced. Felt like the staff knew little about the wines . General feeling of being hurried through and staff not really able/willing to discuss the food. Strange takehome snack of two tiny dry allegedly Bakewell tarts which didn’t taste of Bakewell.

Food was great, but a bitter taste left - having eaten at quite a few starred resultants now, I kind of know what to expect. When we arrived, nothing was explained to us, we were handed, what appeared at first inspection to be a drinks menu, only to then be asked what we’d like to eat. We asked whether there was a tasting menu, to which the chap replied “yes of course, how many courses?” We opted for the larger option, with wine pairing. We were a party of two and over the next couple of hours food and wine came out, all tasty and well thought out. Once we’d requested the bill, we were shocked to see the price - almost £500!! Well, little did we know, the menu is ++ (plus service, plus VAT), which throws the recent publicity of “Bristol cheapest Michelin” into question! The food was great, but was it worth someone’s monthly rent? Not at all. Service was off, food was on par with Wilson’s, but charging plus vat left a sour taste in our mouths and generally ruined the experience.

This was such a disappointing experience. The food was amazing, the dishes were perfectly cooked, creative and with amazing flavours. The service however was awful. It started well with the first three courses coming out quickly but then everything slowed down. We would have our dirty plates in front of us for 10-15 minutes after we had finished eating despite staff walking past us and seeing them. When our plates were finally cleared it would then be another 10-15 minutes before the next course arrived. This is not what you want on a 10 course taster. The experience was so slow we were there for 4 hours and actually decided to skip the cheese course and coffees just so we could get out sooner. Not the standard I would expect from a Michelin star restaurant.

Incredible 9 course menu, exemplary service and a warm authenticity that made the evening truly special. Service: Knowledgeable and friendly team, from the wine to each individual dish. We loved that it seemed each team member wanted us to learn about the dish and its ingredients rather than just state what it was. No sense of pretentiousness, but rather a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. Food: Each course was inviting, delicate and well- balanced. The monkfish, champagne sauce and Jerusalem Artichoke dish, the canapés/small bites (croustade, smoked lamb, XO doughnut) and sea buckthorn Madeline were favourites. An exemplary dining experience. Bulrush is the real deal when it comes to culinary excellence. Much to Bulrush's benefit, the ambiance is notably more laid-back compared to its counterparts; contributing to a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Upon arrival, the staff greeted us warmly and guided us to our table with attentive care. We opted for the five course taster menu that encompassed a seamless mosaic of world cuisines. The blend of Asian, French and Scandinavian flavours culminates in a diverse and aromatic palette.Throughout the meal, the chefs continually surprised with their inventive twists on familiar ingredients. For drinks, the sommelier offered erudite and unbiased advice on a bottle for the table. We decided on the Cotswold Sparkling wine - a fantastic pairing for the meal. Bulrush offered great value and a Bristol dining experience unlike any other, I highly recommend to residents and visitors alike.

My grandma has lived next door to the Bulrush since it opened (and for about 10 years before that) and has never been as she's not one to spend much money on herself. She had both her birthday and retirement the other day and I plotted to give her the ultimate surprise right on her doorstep. I informed the restaurant when booking that she was both their neighbour and celebrating a big milestone and they went above and beyond to make the night special. They gave us an extra appetiser, a free drink and 2 extra petit fours to take away, beautifully wrapped in a little box. I was blown away by the care and kindness of the staff- thank you for making this such a special night for my beloved Nannie. The food was exceptional. Every dish was a sensory experience and expertly balanced. My grandma has never had a Michelin experience and this certainly lived up to her expectations. The service is second to none- the staff are real experts who truly care about the food they serve and will even explain where its sourced. I was incredibly impressed by the amount of foraged ingredients used in our dishes. The atmosphere is so cosy and I couldn't fault a single part of the evening. Again, I can't thank the amazing staff and chef enough for making this night such a perfect, unforgettable surprise ❤️

The service was ok - the waiter forgot a lot of things, plates, glasses, filling our glasses. The food started well but nothing memorable. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, the toilets were shabby. Desserts were not sweet at all. Leaving you wanting that sugar hit at the end of a meal. We also had to wait downstairs with other guests to pay and then wait again for someone to go and find our coats, in the way of other customers eating. Just a bit unorganised.

Really excellent experience on Saturday night. The food was outstanding and great value for a 9 course menu. The pace of food was perfect, not slow at all, but just right. The restaurant decor is pretty basic, and not luxury, but the food speaks for itself. My only (Small) critique would be that we arrived, with no explanation of the menu, and were served with our first course without the opportunity to order wine or a drink, so the initial impression was a little rushed. However the service was good after that. Attentive and focused. Allow 3 hours…but it’ll fly by. Highly recommend.

Outstanding food and service, great value. We went for my wife’s birthday. Great range of dishes: modern, inventive and intricate, high quality ingredients. We did the wine pairing which we felt complemented the food well and added an element. We were well looked after by all the staff but particularly sommelier Alan. Standout dish for us was the stone bass with champagne and mussel sauce, Orkney scallop and fallow deer also wonderful. We will be going back.

Dismal. Celebrated my birthday here as a small group. We were seated upstairs in a loft space which has only a handful of tables. The space seemed like a complete afterthought, it had no more character than my dentists waiting room. It was also freezing cold, the radiators were cold to the touch and a single fan heater was present which made no difference to the temperature. We all felt it was very cold and wished we hadn’t handed in our jackets on arrival. The food was okay but the service was painfully slow. We were sat for 3hr 30mins in all over the 9 courses. There was some lengthy periods between courses which started to grate on us all. Over the course of the meal we were served chipped lates and dirty cutlery. By the time we got to the desert courses we all lost interest and were keen to get out of there. We went there for an experience but left having had a particularly bad one. The disappointment was unanimous and we all left feeling shot changed. 4 persons circa £500 spend.

We arrived with high hopes - a Michelin star - and expecting a worthy successor to Bistro 21 and Juniper. Pleasantly surprised that we were not alone at a lunchtime, it was comfortably busy. It is a big risk when you are offering just a set lunch, with no choices, it needs to suit everybody and at the same time to surprise and delight them too. Personally we dislike the nose to toe philosophy, even if it is not fully implemented and the idea of grating the left over cheese rinds into a sauce discouraged my wife, and that was before she tried to eat their venison platter. I have 30 years experience in food and we have eaten in many of the best restaurants in the country - we lament Gavroche's passing this month. I have to say, none of the courses were memorable or appetising and some, the venison and the pudding were difficult to eat. The consomme was off putting.Everybody else in the restaurant seemed to be happy with their meals so perhaps we are the odd ones out - the madeleines at the end of the meal were great.

Visiting Bristol we’d thought we’d make a special evening of it. Unfortunately, we came away slightly underwhelmed. Firstly, the wine we ordered was out of stock. The upstairs attic room was cold so much so most of the the other guests were putting their coats on. The room was supplied with the smallest of fan heaters that took the chill off, but for this level or restaurant it’s a school boy error. Emphasis was definitely on presentation. On the whole pleasant flavours and interesting ingredients. Some courses lacked cohesion of flavour and was either over or under seasoned. Extra special course of tuna was a disappointment and the wagu fat ruined the taste and texture of the tuna. Nice selection of English sourced wines and spirits which is great to see. Reasonable value for money but the £45 service charge was a bit hard to swallow when we had to pour our own wine and water and were never asked if we wanted a second bottle. Nice, but better out there and wouldn’t return.

Thank you Bulrush for a fabulous experience. We all enjoyed the creative flavour combinations and imaginative presentation of the 9 course tasting menu. 2 of us had the standard menu, and 2 pescatarian. I'd perhaps just comment that the pescatarian one had a greater emphasis on cheesy, creamy things than I'd ideally go for, though that's just personal taste. The service was relaxed and unfussy, yet professional. Unlike some previous reviewers we were very very happy to spend several hours enjoying all those courses, and would have been disappointed if it had been any less time. We treated ourselves to the wine pairings which were varied and all interesting and good quality. A memorable treat of an evening.

Feeling a tad violated after my experience. The restaurant poses as high end cuisine but they completely forgot to taste their dishes. Granted, if you like vinegar, fermented yeast or marmite you may like it, but I don’t so had difficulty keeping the food down. True, the experience was one of a kind, but a kind I would never want to repeat. There was not a single dish from ones I tried that I wanted a second bite of or would ever want to taste again. Fusion of horrible and disgusting. Staff was lovely though. We were lucky to have escaped half way through to Bravas where food actually tasted nice. Cannot recommend and will not recommend, the only star is for great service.

Fabulous food, beautifully presented. We enjoyed the nine course tasting menu and shared a wine flight (half a glass each - highly recommended whenever you’re having a tasting menu). The presentation of each dish and every glass of wine was passionate and knowledgeable, the flavours were great and sometimes really exciting. The restaurant took the trouble to mark the wedding anniversary we were celebrating in a very sweet way which was lovely. As many reviewers have mentioned the pace of the service was very slow with long waits between dishes. This meant we were there for three and a half hours. Much as I enjoy savouring a meal this was far too long. Overall we enjoyed our experience. The quality of the food (which would clearly take a huge amount of time, effort and skill to produce) justified the price tag.

Food excellent as expected from a Michelin star but I did feel that 3 sweet deserts was a little much. The service however not good; I have read numerous reviews posted in the last 6 months and the recurring theme is v v slow service. We were having the tasting menu, arrived at 1830 and only managed to leave at 2230 when I got up, found a waiter and said we needed to leave soon. So like perhaps you do in a busy restaurant elsewhere I asked for the bill to be brought out with the last course. The waiting staff were v polite and explained all the courses well but we were often waiting 20-30 minutes between courses. When you are trying to enjoy a 9 course taster menu you can now understand why the whole experience was way too long. It could have been that we were upstairs in a room where the waiting staff dropped the food off and then disappeared for 10 -15 minutes. Towards the end of the meal I could see other diners becoming restless and looking around for staff. 4 hours sitting on a small wooden chair for 1 meal too long. V good food but service letting this place down. Not too sure it warrants a star; we won’t be coming back here again.

Firstly, I want to mention that the food was absolutely outstanding and arguably up there with the best I've had. Excellent menu choice and each complimented the other really well. My partner (who I took for her birthday) said it was "the best food she's ever had." Unfortunately (and I'm not sure we just caught them on an off night) but the service was really poor. Multiple servers who were very transactional, and built little rapport. I mentioned clearly on the booking (which I've had since May) that is was for a birthday, and not a single acknowledgment of it, not even a "celebrating any occasion?". Other tables that arrived later than us were being served food and drink before us, it took at least 30 minutes for our bottle of wine to arrive after ordering. At one point midway through the evening I asked for a refill of our tap water for the table, to which they took the bottle but the server never returned. We were there from 7pm and left at 11pm, giving you an idea on the timings for an 8 course taster menu. I asked for the service charge to be removed at the end, and the server very politely did so, but never asked us if there were any issues with the dinner at all (which I thought would have been a perfect opportunity to do so!). Overall, the food is outstanding and I can see why Bulrush is rated highly, but unfortunately for us, the service really let it down.

Ate here solo on a wet Saturday lunchtime in July, lovely long room with an open kitchen at the end, there is an upstairs but I didn’t have a look. Room is sparse, quite contemporary in feel and is simply but stylishly furnished with wood and white prominent. Very elegant. Menu was a tasting format with a six or nine course at £65 or £90, I went for the 9. Food was overall excellent, lots of interesting and unusual flavour combinations, mostly worked really well with the occasional hiccup, thought the standout dishes were a stunning plaice and langoustine combination and a chawanmushi with asparagus , oyster and seaweed. The last dessert of blueberry, spruce and elderflower for me didn’t work but was like everything else interesting and a bit off piste but in a good way. Bread was excellent and came with a variety of butters and a wagyu fat, personally would have liked just a plain great quality butter. Overall Bulrush is an excellent neighbourhood restaurant serving modern well constructed and interesting food, there is an occasional tendency to over elaborate and complicate but the level of detail and labour in the dishes is admirable. Service from a young team was great.

After spending the last 12 months eating in as many places as possible I'll say I was very much looking forward to this one. I'll be honest I was slightly disappointed from expectations which is why it's a 4. We were sat next to a drafty door in the middle of winter when there were plenty of other tables available, I did ask to move which we did to a wobbly table (I used a napkin to sort) but in a place like that I'd expect there to be that level of attention from the staff to be covered. Taster menu looked great. I didn't feel any passion from the staff when delivering the wine or the food (more so the wine, on some courses it was just poured, told what type it is and went with no real explination of where it is from, how its made and why it was chosen for the dish ) that in my opinion goes a long way. The courses were really good and had some great flavours, I personally found this particular menu on my first visit to be too rich throughout and wasn't greatly balanced but the second visit it was great tasting throughout. The skill that is there I cannot fault and I enjoyed the food for sure. It's a 4 because it didn't live up to the price, reputation neither my expectation. I would go back if I was invited but I don't feel any desire to choose to go back if I'm honest.

Visited for the first time to celebrate a birthday, and was not disappointed whatsoever. The restaurant is on a quiet street with an unassuming exterior, but is smartly decorated inside. Staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable and talked us through each course (and accompany wine pairing, that we gladly paid a little extra for). The food itself was sensational. We both went for the 9 course taster menu. Full of amazing flavours and presented impeccably. This will be a memorable experience for us, and we would highly recommend to others.

Great restaurant in a nice place in Bristol. Not many seats in the restaurant which makes the place feel very local and cozy. The 6 course menu and wine pairing was exceptional and at a good price.

At first glance, Bulrush might give off the impression of being a peaceful dining spot, with delicately infused, subtle flavors. However, this could not be further from the truth! The dishes here are as subtle as the blaring test nuclear warning alert that echoed across our phones at 3 pm. Brace yourself for a flavor explosion! The Japanese-style amuse bouche consomme blew us away, paving the way to an unforgettable culinary experience characterized by vivid and daring flavor combinations. The attentive service and exceptional wine pairings only added to the complete package of excellence. Without a doubt, one of the most superb meals we have ever had!

The food was wonderful but the service was far too slow. We were there for 3 3/4 hours and didn't have any of the extra courses.

I had a wonderful time dining at Bulrush as I set out to experience the 8-course tasting menu. Though I would’ve preferred to be seated in a more inclusive area (I was tucked away in the corner, away from everyone and right next to the door that constantly let the cold air in) the staff was still friendly and attentive to my needs. Each course (as pictured) had a very nice presentation. The two standout dishes were the Tunworth cheese ice cream (soba honey, black chestnut) with homemade cracker and the specialty pork dish that was offered as a supplement. The Tunworth cheese ice cream was by far my favorite dish…definitely worth a try with their unique and brittle homemade crackers. My least favorite dish was the Chanterelle & violet artichoke tart (whisky egg yolk, goat’s curd), as I didn’t think the combination of flavors and textures were quite right. Overall, I had a very nice time dining at Bulrush and I believe it is an incredible value as a fine dining experience and one of only two one-Michelin star restaurants in Bristol.

Amazing food but not great service. There was no fault with the food, the story, the freshness, and the flavours. However we disappointed with the customer service as we started at 6:30pm and then left the restaurant at 11pm! We were seated up stairs with another table of Two and a table of Five. When 4 hours had gone, we all mentioned to each other how we are all tired because of the length of service. One couple decided to leave the last course as it had taken so long. The waiter had mentioned that they were short staffed, but this was only mentioned after four and half hours. Also appreciate we are all in the cost of living crisis, but the price had increased to what it says online. Online it’s £80pp and we were charged £90pp. Considering its Michelin status, it was abit underwhelming considering the service. No fault with the food. But didn’t feel exclusive. I would ask note that the restaurant didn’t feel smart at at all, and wearing a shirt I felt overdressed. There were others wearing just T-shirts. It’s one ticked off the list anyways.

Not worth the hype. We sat upstairs, no atmosphere what so ever. The first few dishes had a good pace but they slowed down to 25-30 mins between courses. After 3.5 hours we were the only people left upstairs. No wait staff around for over 20 mins to get a drink, I had to walk downstairs to find someone to serve us. We just wanted to get out of there. The food was okay.

Went for the tasting menu and wine flight. It's pretty much what you expect at any high end Michelin star restaurant: stunning food and top tier service. Probably the first time I've enjoyed every wine pairing on a tasting menu too.

Every dish was a party in my mouth! Been wanting to go here for AGES. A 7 course fine dining experience that’ll make you feel like royalty. It’s expensive but worth saving up for. NB: They have different menus for different dietaries. The only critique I have is three puddings is way too much in my opinion - one would have been fine 😂 but blown away by the flavours and overall experience. Thank you Bulrush.

My husband and I spent a beautiful afternoon at Bulrush celebrating our anniversary. We experienced the most fantastic flavours from their tasting menu. From the moment we entered the restaurant the staff were very friendly and polite. They gave us just the right amount personal space without being 'offish' and 'stuffy' which we have experienced in other restaurants. They also gave us a complimentary drink to get the celebration off to a good start. I know its best to point our both pros and cons but in all sincerity I will have to dig dip to find a con. Every mouthful set my taste buds fluttering and especially the Orkney scallop. The Montgomery Cheddar on sourdough which the waiter described as a type of welch rarebit was like no cheese on toast I've ever experienced. To sum up a wonderful experience from start to finish. Looking forward to visiting Bulrush again.

Booking is essential and can be done online. Unusual ingredients listed on the menu which should not put you off. The smells, sauces and the dishes were delicious. I really enjoyed my experience in this one star Michelin restaurant! The thing that made the difference is the service offered there. The staff is really professional and prepared to explain every dish in details, friendly and happy to help! I would have given one star less if it wasn't for them. I liked the dishes composition and presentation, not all the dishes were to my taste, but this is understandable as the flavours you find here are really different than the ones you are used to have in your daily routine. The only thing that I didn't really like was the position of my table, as it was really close to the door and really uncomfortable when people were entering or leaving the restaurant!!! There shouldn't be a table there at all! Other than that I found that the restaurant needed a bit more of cleaning to maintain the standards of a Michelin star restaurant! The bottles and jars around the restaurant were full of dust! I don't suggest to have the supplement as the truffle was tasteless! And doesn't fit the standards! Overall I would definitely recommend the experience!!!

So innovative and of the chart delicious. The food is so thoughtful and the staff really passionate about all they do, from foraging to serving the place is like visiting an eccentric and wildly clever friend. Bulrush is in my top 5 of best Bristol restaurants for all the reasons above and I know the next time I visit it will surprise me with something else to add to the list

CAUTION may now be closed: One of a kind, relaxed, informal, unpretentious eatery run by charming owner. Breakfast good, roast beef on Sunday, delectable! Waterfront eating out, on sunny days. If you're by the waterfront, don't walk by, drop in and try something delicious.
