Brilliant! I have been 4 times, the food was great very tasty. Lovely and clean. Manager,staff very friendly. 100% tops

Though we only had fish and chips they were cooked to perfection. Crispy batter and moist fish. Chips had been well cooked too and the salad was just right. The staff were cheerful and very helpful. We'll be going back to try more of their menu items.

Despite a friendly welcome our table was cramped and too close to an adjoining one so we couldn’t hear our party’s conversation. The staff were lively. The drink selection was poor, asked for fruit gin and pinot Grigio- both not available. GAndT was served without lemon-5 They had runout as had the va ills ice cream. Some Choi ex on the menu were unavailable. We had a good evening for our family reunion but disappointed by the lack of basics.wont be visiting again.

Sunday carvery delicious. Great choice of meat with different potatoes and at least 6 different veg. Yorkshire puddings and stuffing. Plus amazing gravy. Carvery server working hard and fast to supply food to everyone. All Staff excellent. Value for money. I Would recommend. .

What a fantastic evening we all had , the food was well presented, hot and nicely cooked. The owner and staff easy to talk to and made us all feel very welcome. We will definitely be going back soon

Excellent food, served promptly by very accommodating staff. We visited as a family with two young children and were impressed by the quality of food for the kids menu as well as the good quality pub food on the main menu. So good that we went back for a second evening meal in the same weekend!

Our friends came with us for the first time visiting the Whitehouses ,we chose stilton Burger,Steak and Ale pie,Scampi, Vegetables Pasta. All the dishes were excellent with homemade chips and my pie was full of meat. The beer was good as well, definitely be back.

It’s may fave when in Retford - the Beef Wellie was divine!! My favourite dish, mixed seafood platter to start - excellent, superb service and presentation - book asap as this is one of the best restaurants in the area - highly recommend it. Stay in the cottages attached - don’t miss those either! Who needs a taxi when hen you have superb accommodation as well!!

We went based on recent publicity First thing I found the music in the restaurant area overbearing sat near a speaker it was hard to have a conversation with the wife sat opposite. On the food we went for pie and lasagne, the lasagne was quite bland , the wife's comments were "I've had better in a cafe in town" The pie came with a decent amount of filling for a small slice but was very dry, the chips were ok but tasted like the oil needed a change , having gone for the peas it was just a portion of frozen peas. We did notice on the next table a customer telling the waitress how unhappy they were with their meals. With two soft drinks and almost feeling compelled to give a service charge when handed the payment machine which gives you a percentage option, we felt very underwhelmed. Not what we expected, average food at best with not the best of service and feeling expensive compared to other local establishments for what was on offer.

The bar staff were very pleasant but took too long in coming to take our order. My husband was about to go to the bar to ask to place the order when she eventually came over. The burger was ok but the gammon was overcooked and dry and the mushy peas were lukewarm. Unfortunately the choice of beers was limited with no light ale available. We won’t be returning anytime soon.

Sat afternoon lunch , visited The Ship many times so very hopeful re Whitehouses . Very disappointed, lacking in atmosphere and seems unfinished and empty . Lunch served on cold plates , nice chips multi coloured peas and steak and potato pie cold in the middle meat chewy and tough . Very disappointed sorry

Ed and Jane are the perfect hosts and look after you from start to finish.. The food here is of very high standard..And the beers are fabulous. Yes your paying slightly more than your average pub because this place isn't just your average pub. You want quality then that's what your getting..Did i mention the beers are spot on as well.🤣

I can only give 4 stars this time. The starters and main course were excellent. The puddings were a bit ordinary compared with the rest of the menu and little variety. The cheese board came with dry crackers and a bit of cucumber. What is wrong with butter, apple slices or grapes that compliment cheese well and add a bit of moisture? Loss of the star is for the service. Given ordinary blunt knife to cut Venison. It should have been replaced when I ordered but had to ask for steak knife. Call me old fashioned but taking my plate away while my partner is still eating is just not good etiquette? I asked for a wine menu to order a rich red well before my main course of Venison arrived but the wine did not turn up till after it was served. Perhaps I am fussy but Whitehouses is not cheap so I expect better for my money.

What a change to have beautifully cooked, highly quality ingredients. Service first class and the owner was considerate and helpful. I’ll be back.

Lovely welcome from the staff. There was no children’s menu but bespoke meals were put together by the chef. All meals were delicious and perfect portion size.

We went to Whitehouse today for Sunday lunch. The greeting we got was a fantastic feature. Very friendly. The staff couldn't do enough for us and the food was exceptional. Would highly recommend.

We visited last night and had a lovely experience. The food was well presented and cooked perfectly. It was fairly priced and the menu provided a good variety of different options. We were greeted warmly, invited to sit and enjoy our drinks in the bar, before being shown to our table. The food didn't take long to arrive, but there was enough time between courses that we didn't feel rushed. The hosts were very attentive without hovering and the background music created a nice atmosphere without being intrusive. Well worth the money.

What a fabulous place! Since the new owners have taken over this is the first time we have visited....and I'm gutted we didn't visit sooner. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped through the door. I ordered the pork belly bites to start followed by the pigeon Risotto. Both were exceptional. My partner started with pigeon and then had the monkfish curry. Again, both outstanding. Finished off with a lovely cheeseboard. The staff are fantastic, attentive and knowledgeable. We will be back!

We went to Whitehouses last night with the aim to try the Tapa menu (which looks delicious). We however ordered from the main dinner menu and had pork belly bites and pate for starters and a fillet steak and wild boar sausage and mustard mash for mains. The meats used were of a very high quality and the food was cooked to perfection. I really wanted to try the Hopical Storm but someone forgot her glasses to drive home so I had Erdinger 0% which is a really good alcohol free lager in this hot weather. The hosts (Jane and Ed) were also very friendly, knowledgeable. Overall a much better place now it is run by Ed and Jane (so forget any reviews before late last year).

We had an incredible weekend and visited Whitehouses twice!! The food was spot on and the staff made us feel like family. It was a fantastic experience and would highly recommend Whitehouses. Try the prawns!!

An amazing evening at the Whitehouses. Excellent menu with a very supportive specials board. The service is superb, very attentive staff who really make the evening special. Highly recommend this outstanding restaurant that offers an excellent choice of food and drinks, with friendly family service, we were made to feel very welcome by the new host, who goes the extra mile to make you feel comfortable and valued.

5th time here and I cannot fault it once again! Absolutely beautiful! It was my first time since being pregnant having raw steak, which I was so looking forward to!! Two couples and we all had the Xmas Fayre.All 3 courses were generally very good, the fishcake starter could've been a little tastier.Main courses were excellent as were the desserts.We've had four Xmas Fayre meals this past couple of weeks and this was by the best.Waiting time between courses was spot on.The welcome could've been a little warmer and the odd smile from a couple of staff members wouldn't have gone amiss! If we'd had the latter I would've given 5 stars.

Met friends here and had never been before despite living only 30 minutes away. Lots of choice of fish and seafood. Service very quick and starters and main were almost too quick!! Not much time between courses. Food was lovely and well presented. A really enjoyable evening. Staff all very efficient and friendly apart from the very miserable older chap behind the bar!

I was invited, with a group of colleagues, to dinner at The Whitehouses.The decor and atmosphere is pleasantly laid back.Menu contained plenty of options.Considering the size of our group, approx 30, starters were served promptly by polite, patient staff.Both starters and mains were extremely nice.BUT the evening was spoilt by an extremely rude and obnoxious “manager”.The waiting staff were extremely busy. To ease the pressure a group member went to the bar to order some drinks only to be met by “you have a waitress use her!!!!” from someone that appeared to be the manager.Average food can be compensated by good service.Good food is no excuse for a rude service.Fortunately this was just one individual and the rest of the staff were more than attentive.What a shame that one individual can tarnish what would have been a very pleasant night.

We have visited 4 times now.So far we have not had anything to complain about. Every dish has been good and fresh. We have not eaten meat or vegetarian dishes, only the starters and main fish dishes and desserts. The oysters are awesome.You do need to book in advance. The owner's telephone manner is abrupt which did put us off the first couple of attempts to book a table. In person, he is not the most welcoming, preferring his regular customers for his warm welcome.Can only say we love the food. It is not so easy to find good fish, not deep fried or over cooked in general, nowadays.Will definitely visit again .

We visited Retford a few weeks back and visited the nearest pub which happened to be the White Houses. We went to the bar to see if we could order some food and we were told that they were fully booked for the night if we hadnt reserved a table, which was fair enough since it was a Saturday. Unfortunately we hadnt so we asked if we could just order some drinks at the bar before we moved on. The waitress bluntly answered "no because we hadnt booked a table"! I am sure the White Houses was advertised as a pub and a restaurant on their website not just a restaurant? Maybe we werent welcome because we were dressed casually and not in a suit and tie? They state on their website that their "aim is to provide high quality food and service in a friendly comfortable surrounding". Cant comment on the food but definitely would disgaree about the high quality service and friendliness bit of the statement.Therefore not a place I would recommend as there is a much friendlier pub 5-10mins walk away, The Gate Inn, which made us feel much more welcome.

Been here a few times now and it never disappoints! The staff were really helpful and assertive.I had partridge wellington off of the specials board and my partner decided to try the Cote De Boeuf (sharing platter for 2) but wanted to have it for himself, which he did manage and the staff were very impressed! Everything was cooked exactly the way we asked for it cooked. Definitely be back soon!!

We’ve eaten here 3 times in the last few months as a family and always return given the standard of food and presentation. However, every single time we have been we have been seriously disappointed by the quality of the service from who I can only assume is the landlord and a lady at front of house who frankly couldn’t appear to be more disinterested in their customer base beyond their known regulars. Interactions were short and rude with both these individuals. Thankfully the meal wasn’t completely ruined as there was a lovely Scottish lady who was waiting on as well as some very polite young staff. You may well be busy and may well have an established customer base but that doesnt give permission for rude, aloof customer service from those who should be setting the standard.

Travelled over from Barlborough with our friend from Sheffield and it was well worth the journey . Extensive choices on the menu and super food . A busy Saturday evening but a safe environment and we all enjoyed are meals .

We ate here on Sunday and I was not impressed. Food was mediocre and expensive. My roast chicken breast was the cheaper split breast cut with the wing bone attached. I wouldn't have ordered chicken had I known it was going to be like that. Gravy and stuffing overly salty, roast potatoes just warm not hot. Staff seemed surly and not customer focussed. We won't return.

Dropped in without a booking but were accommodated (just). Lovely meal-better than average quality pub food. The specials are quite seafood heavy but there are plenty of dishes on offer. Nice service. Would definitely visit again

Visited this restaurant on a recommended for Sunday lunch a big mistake the place was very busy we both ordered the lamb after waiting a long period of time the meal eventually turned up which was not hot and the lamb was that tough that we had to asked for steak knives to cut it, as well as have to ask for any condiments as well as the staff we found to be quite rude.Will definitely not be going back there again

We don’t get out much ‍♀️ but today we had lunch. What a terrific experience. Everything was perfect, food, wine and service. Couldn’t manage a pudding and we had it to go, left it behind, I’m crying hopefully my husband can collect later. Thank you Jonathan and Rachel we very much enjoyed our experience.

Had high hopes and were keen to return. It was busy and in current climate there still looked like there were same amount of tables in. Took an hour from order for starter to come out- the service was incredibly slow. Varied menu but when main came out fish was cold- having waited sooo long didn’t say anything as just wanted to eat and go. Customer service poor. All in all a poor experience which was so disappointing.

Just had the most fantastic meal yet again at Whitehouses. The menu is always so different and well thought out with the best produce. We had the fillet steak and lobster board, which was just so delicious. Can’t wait for a return visit!

So nice to see this place open again, even under current COVID regs, and the food is just as good as pre lockdown. Well done for the superb lockdown takeaways and the new menu is terrific. As for the ‘anonymous’ December 1st review, I notice no mention was made of the food and it’s your one and only review made. (Speaks volumes). The food here is outstanding, as is the service. Huge portions at reasonable prices.

We were pleased to be able to book a table for three to take my aged mother in law for her first lunch out since September.The food is good here and English asparagus was first of the season. Good range of dishes and all well cooked and presented.The style of service is not to everyone’s taste but we have learned to accommodate it over the years we have eaten here.Thankfully the weather was kind, sunny and relatively warm.

Ordered food to takeaway as restaurant is closed due to COVID. Booking was easy via Instagram and service was efficient and organised. Ribeye steak was cooked perfectly and served with creamy peppercorn sauce, handcut chips, tomatoes and mushroom. The ox cheek Bourgignon was delicious, tasty and tender, served with horseradish potatoes and mixed colour carrots. For dessert we had cherry pie with crispy, buttery pastry and custard and sticky toffee pudding and custard, which is the best we have eaten anywhere. Would highly recommend whether takeaway or restaurant when they open again.

Disgusting service and unbelievably rude managers. In particular Rachel who didn’t even have the decency to look me in the eye and Jennifer who could not keep her opinions to herself and degraded and insulted me. The most APPALLING customer service I have ever experienced.

Well, we came on recommendations from friends and colleagues and this place did NOT disappoint!!! Amazing!!! Starters - salt and pepper squid - cooked to perfection and very generous portion.Crispy chilli beef - absolutely divine. Mains - seafood platter - lobster, scallops, prawn cocktail, muscles, bacon and spinach oyster, fish goujons fries and salad - next time I’d take off the last 2 as the dish was perfect without these!!!! 8oz Dry aged fillet steak - cooked perfectly and quality was the best of the best!!! Deserts - creme brûlée - perfect and Bakewell tart with full sized cherries in it - PERFECT does not cover it!!The premium Malbec was delish too. Served with a smile and everything was clean and tidy, plenty of cleaning between guests, temp check and bookings only - during pandemic.Spot on, will be back 100% all round. Thank you.

Not a bad Sunday dinner but the mash tasted like smash and the roast potatoes was deepfat fried. Other than that all the rest was really nice. The meat. vegetables and cauliflower cheese was all really nice.Won’t be visiting again for the Sunday lunch

Fabulous meal as usual under new covid restrictions (10pm curfew) you won't find a better safer place to eat with excellent service as always and always able to deal with my vegetarian needs and nut allergy which I am sure isn't easy on a very busy Saturday evening.

So impressed with this restaurant. Used the tracker app at the door and temperature taken on entry. I’ve eaten in lots of places in Retford lately and this was the first time this had happened. Staff wore visors and not all restaurants do this either. Food fantastic as usual. Felt very safe in there. Thank you.

Absolutely superb. Can’t fault anything. Staff very friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The menu had a wide range to choose from in order to cater to everyone’s need. And the food was delicious, could tell everything is fresh and home cooked. Would definitely recommend and worth the money.

Excellent meal fresh and tasty food had a fillet steak and lobster sharing board for two. Steak was tender and lobster fresh and tasty. The service was good but the quality of the food set the place off. Far better than miller and carter for the same price.

This was our 4th visit on all our visits the food is excellent well done to the chef but the owner who serves behind the bar should never be in the hospitality trade because he his rude and arrogant On ordering our starters his member off staff corrected us as we ordered pate she quoted its parfait!! And when we asked for extra ice for our wine she said its a hot day and ice was in short supply also we ordered 2 off house rose wine from the menu Didn’t check the bottle on receiving when we received the bill we had been charged for 2 bottles of there more expensive wine at 28.00 per bottle when we questioned this with the rude manager he said they didn’t have any off the house rose and we should have checked the bottle before drinking it but we should have been informed that the house rose was not available and given the choice

The service at Whitehouses was faultless! The floor staff are a credit to the team and (who we can only assume was the owner) was spot on! We both ordered off the Sunday menu and ordered roast chicken dinner with a side of cauliflower cheese. Every item on our plates was more than impressive!! The high standard of the mains encouraged us to order desserts and we weren’t disappointed again. Combined with the staff, the food and presentation of the overall restaurant we can’t fault it! If we were local we would be back! The covid 19 measures were also clearly in place!

Went with friends on a Tuesday night and took advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Had a very enjoyable meal of lobster in chilli and garlic butter - really delicious. The restaurant was busy but the tables are well spaced and it felt like all appropriate measures had been taken.

Absolutely fantastic food tonight for my wife’s birthday. We all loved it and the father-in-law said it’s one of the best meals he’s ever had. He’s 81 and been all over the world, so he knows his stuff.Also, a big thank you to the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak. He’s doing a terrific job in extreme circumstances.

Our daughter ordered Sunday lunch for us as it was our wedding anniversary and because of the lockdown we couldn’t all be together .what a great job you are doing the food was fantastic .we had garlic mushrooms to start the best I have ever had then roast beef lunch the beef just melted in your mouth and everything else was superb .then we had sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie for dessert.everything was so good we will be back .thankyou for a lovely Sunday lunch .

Visited Whitehouses Inn Thursday 12th of March-we were visiting friends in Sutton-On-Trent they mentioned the Whitehouses they’d heard the food was good-so my husband suggested going after a morning in Retford.Met by a friendly girl asked if we would be eating-Yes, we ordered drinks at the bar were given menus and showed to a table and waitress mentioned the specials board, a very good choice on all menus! We all had different dishes, each of them were excellent flavours and quality.Lovely dining room and atmosphere, we don’t live close by but our friends say they will be back soon with their family-we will too on our next visit!

Had a great night 10 of us with some youngsters. Jonathan and Rachel made what could have been a difficult evening, with a sadly departed wonderful person missing, instead we had a great feast of amazing quality.Thank you guys for that. Perfectly placed in an almost private room. Very considerate. Always deservedly busy. Amazing choices..

The food was excellent and the atmosphere good if a bit noisy. We’d go back!There’s no doubt the portions are big and explain why the dishes may seem a little more expensive than other places but the quality and taste answers this. Make sure you book as it does get busy.

Me and my husband have visited on numerous occasions and never ever been disappointed. Food has always been delicious and presented really well, serving staff efficient and friendly. There is a wide choice of foods from pie and chips to lobster Thermidor, from tap water to clique champagne :-) nice traditional setting with a modern twist. Visited for my birthday on 24th January. Outstanding service and food made this a night to remember. Excellent choice of starters and mains all cooked to perfection. Service was top notch also. Our starters were the crab cocktail and the awesome chilli beef. For mains we chose the Lamb rump. Mouth watering, and the best lamb we’ve had for a long long time. For dessert we had the egg custard tart with roasted rhubarb and home made ice cream. Absolutely delicious. Thankyou for making my birthday meal, one I won’t forget.

Visited for the first time in about 2 years. The food was fantastic, all credit to the chef. There was loads of choice on the main menu, plus an extensive 'specials' board. The landlord can be a little brusque sometimes, however ignoring this, all the other staff were friendly and efficient and the food is very very good quality.

We went for a family meal and had scallops and chateaubriand. Both were absolutely delicious, definitely the best restaurant we have been to. We were made to feel very welcome and will definitely be returning for the excellent food and service.

Booked last minute for Xmas dinner £85 quid a head so you’d expect something better than you’d cook yourself. Sadly not . No glass of champagne on arrival or sherry nothing . Stale canapés. Bland starter , bland mains under seasoned food . Generally blah food massively overpriced and severely underwhelming. Would not go back . Average food at best . Way above average price even for Xmas bah humbug

The other dishes were equally enjoyed by everyone. Service was extremely efficient considering how busy it was and we would certainly recommend a visit both from a gastro experience and good value. Superb -food and service. It was a special family birthday celebration and the staff were accommoding and looked after us throughout the meal. Food was delicious and I would definitely recommend.

Been twice over the summer both times excellent food mixture of a starter to share(seafood)we both had fish for mains hake good Service good and prompt.Would recommend but need to book as very busy

I have worked in customer service for over 40 years and I think I know how to greet people! We stopped here on our way home to Northamptonshire from Yorkshire and the first thing the guy said was “are you wanting lunch “? Yes I said to which he replied “ we stop at 2.30 so you’ve just got time” This was at 1.40!! The food was ok but this place really needs someone with a better customer service ethos!!
