White Lion in South Gloucestershire

What a beautiful place to enjoy some great food and drinks! Couldn't recommend this pub enough! The staff are absolutely lovely, was served by T and Owen and will definitely be returning soon!

Used to frequent here several times a week and enjoyed the meals and quiz pre covid. It was always a good night out and a lively pub. (Lynn and Emma) were great hosts , Popped in here Saturday night and it unsually was rather dead to previous times, ordered drinks all good, orderd a second round and again served with a smile happy days , then within 5 mins of paying for them we were told the pub was closing in 5 mins it was 10.20pm , awesome service! my wife left her full drink as she felt under pressure to leave !! The website states 11pm?? Safe to say we won't be back . (Went to the white horse hambrook after who were more than happy to serve us and not usher us out the door minutes later ) Hence the removal of my 5 star review and replacement with a glowing 2 star one . Can't comment on the food this time as we were scouting it out for future visits but we wont bother . Pleanty of other greene king pubs around . Only reason it still gets 2 stars not 1 is because it's a lovely place to sit on the common with a drink on a sunny day 😀

Popped into White Lion during a family walk in the area. We were served promptly and welcomed with a smile from the bar staff as always.

Popped in after work for a quick bite to eat. ordered from the specials menu, food came out very quick and was really tasty. pub had a relaxed evening at atmosphere which was perfect to unwind after a long day

Once again fabulous meal at The White Lion. We have been going there for years, seen changes, but that has never affected the quality of the food, cheerfulness of the staff or the great atmosphere. Lovely garden if you want to go alfresco. See you again soon.

Been to this pub 5-6 times this year for food n drink, few miserable staff but every time better with Frankie! Consistent, chatty anf proper nice!

Met a friend for lunch. We were lucky to get a table as it was busy (Friday lunchtime), the staff and atmosphere are friendly and welcoming. Had a lovely main course followed by pudding, I would definitely revisit as very enjoyable.

We booked a table and turned up with are dog. There was a mistake on the computer and we didn’t know we could not take the dog in the restaurant bit. The staff was great and understanding and made an exception. The food was delicious , we had lamb shanks, mac and cheese . The kids meal were great for the price , could not fault it , also had a couple of pints and they were great as well nice and cold , staff was great , atmosphere was top notch , great dinner out and will definitely be back for the restaurant , minus the dog lol. 10 /10 all the way .

Tried to book for 7 but we were requested to arrive for 6.45. Arrived exactly on time but could not let staff know as you have to wait your turn at the bar to then be checked in and show to your table. You swipe your card for table service.......waited 15 mins watching everyone go to the bar and get drinks so it was obviously quicker this way. I went to bar and was told I can't order drinks as I'm at a table. I explained the wait and was told "it's busy". 20 mins we managed to order a drink , 25 mins we had another person ask for our order. We explained our experience so far and was told she would get our drinks. She then served 3 other people... Food came out and it was quite nice. Lots of deserts not available so we asked for a Irish coffee which was also not available as they only have semi skimmed milk. All things considered, it was just ok which was disappointing considering it was my wife's birthday meal.

Lovely meal today, will definitely be back . We’ve booked for Xmas day too so can’t wait to not have to do the washing up. Would recomend they’re always friendly

We popped in unexpectedly and found all tables booked due to the quiz night taking place. Staff were helpful in allowing us to dine early though and service was prompt and courteous. We enjoyed chicken schnitzel, pea & mint risotto, Eton mess and a white chocolate special dessert. All were very pleasant and very affordable. Great location on the edge of the village green (similar feel to Clifton Downs) with plenty of seating indoors and out. Definitely worth a visit for simple, honest fayre.

Family Sunday lunch for 5 of us. Great service, big portions (unfortunately a few menu items were not available), nice decor. Beer gardens looked nice, but too hot! Would definitely recommend and will be back!

My husband and I had a lovely cream tea and the staff were so friendly nothing was too much trouble it was a great afternoon treat

Came with three friends and we all enjoyed our meal and desert, reasonably priced too. Lovely outdoor seating area which was nice in the sunshine after we had eaten although personally I prefer alfresco. Dog friendly area inside near bar is nice too.

I visited here a few weeks ago it was fairly busy on a Saturday afternoon but certainly not rammed ,and disappointed tbh ,dirty dishes left on tables for over half hour 6 of us ordered and food came out willy nilly and not together 🙄the steak was beautiful but the whitebait in batter was absolutely the worst I've ever had 3 of us tried it and all agreed 🤢won't be rushing back here I'm afraid 😬

An impromptu opportunity to get together with some friends to get a bite to eat this evening, and went to the White Lion for the first time. I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the speediness of service. Friendly staff and lovely customers with their well behaved dogs, what a lovely few hours thank you so much. I will see you again, this is a gem not be overlooked.

We had a really great experience during our visit. The menu was just what we were looking for and our server Tiana was really helpful as our daughter has a nut allergy. I’d highly recommend The White Lion for any occasion!! Thank you!!

Lovely family meal to celebrate a 93rd birthday. Staff very friendly especially Tiana who happily brought a birthday cake with candles which we had supplied. Great food and good ale.

The pub is in a lovely peaceful setting, and there is a really nice garden at the back of the pub where you can eat, or just have a drink. It is also dog friendly. The food was really good, and very reasonably priced. We had the katsu chicken curry which was of a very good standard. The service and friendliness of the staff was outstanding, so we had a very enjoyable visit. Hope to go again soon.

We had my sons and daughter inlaw reviel for there baby on the common have never been there but its really beautiful place pub is lovely very friendly would highly recommend if you want to do something special it was a beautiful day x

I love coming here as it’s usually quite a nice pub for a relaxing and easy meal. The pub itself is really well laid out and excellent outside seating, even on cold nights they have outside heaters. This latest visit I had the gammon and asked for it without the egg so they gave me an extra pineapple slice instead without me having to ask. The only critique I would give is that the past couple of times I’ve ordered the focaccia, including todays visit, it does seem usually quite dry, but if that’s all I have as a critique then I don’t think much to worry about!!

I visited the white lion for lunch with my grandson and could not have been happier. The staff were attentive and friendly and the food was fabulous. Will definitely return and recommend.

Fish & chips were good and sticky toffee pudding was tasty too. Plenty of setting outside on a sunny day Prices for food and drink are reasonable and a big portion also.

An amusing start when my server took my order and walked away before pulling my beer! All was saved by a colleague and we had a chuckle!! I love visiting here because the staff are friendly and cheerful and the food is always freshly cooked and comes to your table piping hot.

Hi I came to the White Lion on Monday Evening and asked for a pint of Diet Coke, when the waiter brought it to the table I asked why it was only three quarters full and he said it was because I didn’t want ice with my drink. Well I paid for a pint of coke. When the food came it was so disappointing, I had Lamb shank there was no mash to go with it, they had ran out of chips they only had French fries so I had Jacket potato which was very poor quality. Vegetables cold and not cooked properly. What had happened to the lovely pub on Frenchay common ?

It was ok, but I was a bit annoyed with the member of staff who came out into the garden to ask my 18 yr old daughter for ID for the second time (she’d just shown valid ID to his colleague at the bar). We were also in the middle of a meal at the time, so even if she had been 16 or 17 she would have been allowed a drink anyway as I had just paid for it, so I was a bit confused by this! When I said she’d already been ID’d I was told he had to check again as licence officers patrolled the garden sometimes…just didn’t feel very friendly to be honest! Food was ok but salad was a bit pathetic (we were only told after we paid that they only had lettuce) and the lasagne had been under a heat lamp a bit too long and had shrunk a bit! Still, it has a lovely garden and a nice atmosphere if you just want a drink and the young lad who served us originally was really friendly and helpful (bring your ID though I guess!)

I really do not know what has happened to this lovely pub??? It is prime location... it is surrounded with lovely scenery, and the building itself superb... that is unfortunately all that I can say about this public house. My family and I are local, and every time we visit... thinking... let's give it another go, we leave disappointed. This I am sorry to say has gone on for perhaps 6 years or more, and it is getting worse. Tonight we walked in for a drink after an evening stroll with the dogs and the kids. Stopped to get a drink and my daughter asked for a cheese cake... at the bar we were met with... so sorry... it is 3 minutes past 9 and the kitchen is shut. No more food!!! My 10 year old daughter stood with me was as shocked as I was. I shouldn't be shocked, as the food we had last time was extremely bad, so much so we have not gone back. Every portion is in packets before cooking I would think. It is a massive shame... it could be an amazing pub with amazing food and amazing staff but falls short on all counts. If I had a business and someone wanted a slice of cheesecake, at 3 minutes past 9, and I could cut a slice from the fridge, I absolutely would. Also told tonight that it is too hot for the ice machine to work??? It is a good job that Frenchay has the White Horse. Which is amazing for food and service and you don't mind spending the money. The white Lion must make most of their money by selling expensive drinks. Very disappointing and perhaps the brewery need to look into a change of management and food... it can't keep getting worse... can it?

A bartender named Connor was immensely friendly and efficient with amazing customer service skills. Welcoming, with just the right amount of conversation. Great pub with a great village atmosphere, perfect for a cider in the sun.

Love this pub in Frenchay. We called in after doing a local walk. We had crisps and lager in their garden as a snack. Staff always friendly.

Had a booking for 5.00pm only to be told that roast dinners had finished. That was the main reason we chose this restaurant. The food we had to choose as a second choice on the whole wasn’t too bad except my Sirloin Steak which was tasty but tough. Obviously not room temperature when started to cook or left to rest. My fault for choosing a steak in a non steak restaurant.

We used to love going to the White Lion for either lunch with friends or on an evening. The staff were great. We are not drinkers so the food is what we loved, that is until the menu changed. We don't like halloumi, or plant based meats, burgers etc. All our favourite meals have gone - and so have we!

We had a lovely visit as always at the white lion. The team even though it was really busy were so helpful. Their new specials menu is lovely and the mushroom starter they recommended was amazing. Will definitely be back

Place wouldn’t be the same with Rosie the manager. So every time we want to book if we get to speak to Rosie she happily reserves us a table in the bar area with our dog. Tonight we tried the new spring specials, the beef croquettes were pretty good and I tried the mango pannacotta which was delicious. Well done White Lion with your new dishes 👍

Excellent, service was impeccable and food was very good for the price! The waiter with ginger hair (sorry I can't remember his name) was especially excellent and really made for a pleasant experience.

I accidentally ordered food to the wrong pub in the Greene King chain, I was fully refunded and it was so kind of them. Been to this pub multiple times, the food and service has always been amazing. Can’t wait to get back in their beer garden when the suns back.

Called in for an unplanned lunch and had a great meal as is the normal now. Team are doing a great job making this a fab local pub. Food hot and fresh with great service. Such an improvement it’s very consistent now and Rosie and team working hard to set a very high standard. Well done.

Had a lovely lunch never a bad meal at the White lion! But this new menu really is amazing we had the beef bourguignon and a pie and both where perfect the beef just fell apart cooked to perfection. We had one of the specials for desert which was a deconstructed giant custard cream was so delicious. But what make this place the best and one we will keep returning to is the staff. Adam always remembers us and is very friendly always makes us welcome. Thanks guys for a lovely lunch !

Lovely cream tea with a friend today. Lots of food, good quality and delicious. Prawn sandwich, salmon roll and chicken/avocado roll. If you don’t like fish, ask for an alternative. One of us was vegetarian and they catered very well for this. Large pieces of cake, brownie and scone, cream and jam.

Lovely evening for my birthday! I received a card and a birthday balloon with a choice of free drink 😊 Rosie the manager even remembered that my hubby was asking about Gladiator cider and got him a complimentary bottle. We were looked after by Wil and Alex and they did a good job. Thank you Rosie and the team 👍

The halloumi was good! The service was lacking. Aside from one bartender, everyone else seemed completely annoyed by our presence. Mind you as soon as we entered the bearded guy rudely said " we're not doing roasts" , then after we ordered proceeded to let two other tables order roasts? The bar service was no shock. It's a bar. However skipping customers to talk to friends is tacky. Also one girl was pulling the weight of everyone so thank you to her! Overall....thank you very much for seating us last minute (12 split into two tables of 6)... But also next time just say no if you're going to be a bit ehhhh. On top of this we were not loud ~ we were all very respectful and just trying to relax after our river walk. We just sat and drank our pints and ate our appetizers and left. ** Note ** we are also grieving a loss of a friend and preparing for a service tomorrow. So this wasn't exactly ideal.

Four of us had a very nice meal here tonite, very nice food, very good service, reasonably priced, a good drinks selection at the bar and off the drinks menu. A very nice evening in a very nice pub.

Excellent in all aspects, it was the perfect venue for our post-Xmas big family meet-up. The staff and venue are lovely and the food was delicious, particularly the pies! Will definitely return, even though we live on the opposite side of town.

I visited the white lion on two separate occasions for their festive fayre menu. As a vegetarian, I normally struggle to find choices that I like. The menu did not disappoint. The food was gorgeous and the service was outstanding. 10/10 team white lion

Had a nice family meal here, to celebrate the birthday of our son, studying at UWE. Steak, pies and burger all excellent. Good portions too (couldn't manage any desserts!). Busy for a Saturday afternoon but service was quick and the atmosphere is friendly

We have been visiting this pub for a few years, sometimes the food hasn’t always been great but more recently it has improved. Rosie (manager) is absolutely lovely and is very customer focused. Really good that the pub is now dog friendly. All of our meals were nicely presented. Lamb shank very tasty and they even let me change to jacket potato. Mixed grill good value and all the meat was nicely cooked. Sirloin steak also cooked to perfection and really tasty. Will be back very soon 😊

Friendly pub with an okay roast. The roast potatoes in particular weren't great! It is in a very nice location with a good view though.
