White Lion in Tandridge

I had a lovely meal with family on Saturday 12 October. The service was brilliant. Bex and Jake were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We met the manager Joe, who appeared with our desserts and made sure we were all happy with our meal and gathered more drinks for us. Table 14 is in a cosy room (quite dark and could possibly do with a brighter lamp or some fairy lights) but very private for an intimate family gathering.

lovely staff, nice atmosphere and cosy. Food is great and drink choices are good. I recommend to go here to have a nice drink with friends and family and nice garden area!!!

Ordered half roast chicken and skin on Fries . The chicken consisted of two pieces not half a chicken I was expecting. The chips served had a tiny amount of skin to qualify They said they had one one type of bun - brioche, so couldn't have the burger I really wanted ( as I am lactose intolerant). One one staff member seemed to be knowledgeable and all others refering to her for any questions I asked.

disappointing.....Sunday lunch ....was beef supplied with 2 bones ....the meat texture was similar the casserole beef.....asked for horseradish sauce. but apparently they do not stock it.....the roast potatoes were pale and probably could have been cooked longer.to crisp them up.. served by a lack lustre young man, fair enough .on the plus side the yorkshire pudding was good. wont return here again, in fact we went to the pub next door just for drinks and was far superior in hospitality and surroundings

I am gluten free. There was little on the menu for me. I choose the roast which consisted of 2 small slices of ham and mashed potato. No Yorkshire puddings no roast potatoes no gravy very bland and poor effort. No Gluten free menu

Very disappointed in the roast, the Duo ham and chicken. The ham was the only nice part of the meal, the chicken was tasteless as was the Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes were tasteless most probably frozen. They were very dry and powdery.The veg as little as there was was not very appealing, the cabbage was nice. Overall not a good experience will not go back there again for a Sunday roast as left most of it not being the best Sunday Roast I have ever hand.

Came with my family for a short-notice dinner. Staff were friendly greeting us in and letting us find a table. The new menu looks much better and the food was cooked beautifully. Great pub.

Visited the white lion on mother's day, although very busy the staff did everything they could to make our experience special, the food was lovely and we couldn't fault a thing.

I wrote a poor review previously. I have visited a few times in the past few weeks and I have been very pleased. There is always a nice smile from the bar staff . Service good . Tried the deal menu which has been good. Yesterday had the vegetarian burger. Ordered and they said kitchen wasn't open for 30 mins but their chef returned early and immediately prepared the order. Very nice! Best veggie burger I've had . The young man running food and clearing tables is a credit . Great value for money too. We will be back

Not many people here when we arrived, nevertheless the service was good and we were seated near a warming fire which made for a cosy setting. The food was nicely presented and tasty. Possibly the best meal we have had in this establishment, thank you chef.

Very disappointing evening altogether. No meet and great to be shown to out booked table, just waited at the bar and although we were told ‘ just sit anywhere ‘ we then found a table was booked with our name. Then once seated we had to go back to the bar to order..or order with the QR code! Which apparently our next table told us doesn’t work! By the time our food arrived our drinks needed refilling so when the person delivered the food and asked if we’d like anything else ..we said can we order more drinks, he said we’d have to go to the bar! Then the meals arrived my curry arrived no problem with that, hot and tasty. My husband’s plain fish meal had obviously been freshly cooked and although it looked a bit ‘ thrown together on the plate it was tasty. The two chicken meals how ever looked awful, looked dried and reheated, the chicken was tough and dried and our relatives who ordered these could hardly cut the chicken to eat them. The peas dried and chips were definitely not freshly cooked ? Left on a heating plate? Whatever it looked unappetising and in fact not pleasant at all …our plates were not removed so we put them on the neighbouring table and took the meat home for our dogs! Went to the bar to order more drinks, I had a voucher for a free drink as I went to use it I wasn’t able to as the person had checked it in before I had actually chosen the drink and it wasn’t available! Then we ordered one small sweet and coffee took the drinks to our table and waited for the ice cream and eventually found it at the bar , ice cream melted and congealed chocolate. No bay had bothered to bring it to the table. So our evening meal which we had really looked forward to was very disappointing.

I had a great experience at the White Lion today!!! Kylie behind the bar is so funny, positive and welcoming to customers. She is managed by Josh who ensures a smooth running system and no customer is ever forgotten. Great prices, Great Drinks, Great Food and Outstanding Service. I will be returning and would 100% recommend this friendly pub.

Used the white lion on several occasions but this time didn't stay to long due to the fact that the garden door into the bar just slammed with a big BANG each time someone entered so we ate up drank up and left.

Went the white lion yesterday vastly improved since my last vist about 7months ago, staff were especially welcoming, new manager seems to on course to turn the place round, barmaid Emily who I think is new was very efficient and helpful. Keep up the good work will definitely be coming back more frequently when I'm in the area.

Went to the White Lion on Sunday 17 December, dreadful lunch. My starter,deep fried mushrooms had black pepper in the batter, I hate black pepper and if people want it they can add it at the table. The roast lunch was awful, the gammon had no taste and was very chewy, the almost cold roast potatoes were also covered in black pepper, Yorkshire pudding was soggy, the gravy had an odd sweet taste. I did tell the waiter and he said he would tell the chef Altogether a terrible disappointment, will certainty not rush back!

A lovely festive meal in a great little pub. The atmosphere was brilliant and we had an added bonus of live music with a lovely female singer. The manager Rachel was lovely and friendly and attentive to all our need throughout the evening making sure we were happy with our food and drink.

Despite having booked a table for 7.30, when we ordered our food at the bar there was no steak, no sea bass, no garlic bread and several other items had also run out. This reduced the menu effectively to burgers and a few other dishes....

Firstly they didn’t reserve table as requested three days before then food came and everything was cold four plates of food cold tiny portion. I asked for veggie sausages instead of normal was told blankly NO when I asked why he shrugged his shoulders. Told...

Had the 2 course selection, food came out luke warm, one starter was soup, not hard to warm!!! Told the waitress when she cleared and asked her to make sure second course was hot, came out luke warm again with a cremated steak, totally inedible...

Really friendly pub. We came in for supper and met a great bunch of people. They were so friendly and chatted to us all night. We got hugs as we left. It made our day.

First time out for food and drinks , I can honestly say we were nervous, but I have to say a big thank you to shan and the team ( the two young ladies also on duty Wednesday afternoon) that they were all polite, Friendly and helpful putting us at ease even assisting other customers with using the app and track and trace. Very much appreciated, food was great thanks again.

Despite Covid restrictions and therefore a limited menu, a very enjoyable meal. Advisable to pre-book online as it was busy with the weather being so good and a Saturday afternoon. Staff were friendly and helpful. It was lovely to be able to sit outside and have a pub meal. The food was delicious hearty pub food. We will certainly be going back again, especially when the full menu is back up and running. The only downside was there were limited drinks due to stock shortage, the cocktails all seemed to be off the menu. Spoke to a member of staff who said it was because the day before had been so busy. You have to download the Embers Inn app so you can order at your table. This was quite easy to do.

We came here as a family of five and we were slightly disappointed. Nothing to sing about, especially when you expect a good country pub.

my partner and i had booked a table yesterday evening. We arrived ,shown to our table and we were asked to use the app.. well being elderely we are not at all techy!!! anyway we filled it in as best we could.. then realised the meal my partner ordered was not available... the ribs , and that our half price on mains was not there either.. we had also ordered a drink each.. eventually being totally confused i said let's just go home,, on the way home i had received 2 missed calls from the pub.. so i called them back.. explained what had happened.. the lady on the phone was upset and worried that we had left without receiving our meals.. or drinks.. after explaining she said come back tomorrow and enjoy a meal on us.. as our money had already been taken.. We arrived back today.. not sure what to expect... well!!! The staff were ready and waiting.. we had our meal and the drinks we had ordered the previous night.. the waitress straight away knew who we were..and was so kind.. i explained that we didn't really understand the app!! She said no probs.. i didn't get her name.. but she said she lived above the pub and had enjoyed working there.. and all she wanted was happy customers... and had worked there for the last 4 years.. i just want the managment to know what an outstanding lovely member of staff they have.. i am sure you all know who she is... amazing customer service... Thank you. And the lunch was on the house... i believe the manager is called Steve... well done white lion for exceptional service from our lovely waitress.

We have not eaten out lately because of the Coronavirus but decided to throw caution to the wind and book a meal at the White Lion. So glad we did, the food was great, lots of choice and reasonable too. The staff were very friendly, wearing masks, hand sanitiser available and track and trace. They were doing as much as they could to keep everyone safe. It was nice to have a meal out again,

Great meal here! So glad they continued the eat out to help out! Was amazed at the choices on the menu! Food came out piping hot! Bar staff were excellent! Track and Trace, social distancing and a sanitiser station! Great use of pub and a one way system! Means you get to see the old pub whilst getting your drinks! Very people and dog friendly too!

Wd have eaten here before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Today however was a dissappointment. Limited menu which hubby was advised was dependant on what was delivered. Prawn cocktail served on bed of limp lettuce. Cold roast potatoes with limited veg, carrots undercooked. Minute portion of beef. Hubby's pie was ok but only served with undercooked greens. We will not be returning.

Hopeless! There is no reason to be this bad. And I am only referring to greeting (none!), service, attitude, food quality and overall cleanliness. The attitude to COVID does not comply with government rules. So it’s also dangerous!

We took advantage of the ''eat out to help out''. Ordered medium to rare cooked 8 oz sirloin steak 'surf and turf' and medium cooked 10 oz ribeye steak. Ribeye looked smaller than the Sirloin steak and both were overcooked and tough. The Sirloin steak looked like a 5 oz and was sinewy. Both were meant to be accompanied with '''All of our steaks are expertly aged for depth of flavour and served with seasoned chips, grilled tomato, flat mushroom, garden peas and crispy onion rings'''. There were no mushrooms, the tomato was half a tomato and crispy onion rings were overcooked.To add to that, there was no mustard at all and only a quarter jar full of horseradish with no spoon which is not at all hygienic in this current climate.We still have the opportunity to take advantage of the 'help out to help out' but we will not be going back there!

I used to think this was a really lovely local pub for me and the family to go to occasionally but recently since reopening after lockdown the food and the service has been terrible. When my child’s food came out her cheesy garlic bread was completely black round all the edges not just a little bit a lot! And I never really am one to send food back but I couldn’t allow her to eat it. When I grabbed the waiters attention and explained I was really sorry but the food was too burnt he asked me what I wanted him to do about it ? I said I don’t know.. can you perhaps do another one ? And he said I can cut the burnt bits off instead .. this took me quite by surprise and insisted she needed a newly cooked one as it was just way too burnt and half the garlic bread would be cut off! When the dish came out we had half the portion we originally had which I find absolutely rude and disgusting! Not only that but my nans chicken burger was Burnt pretty bad and my onion rings also were way over cooked to the point it was tough to be able to actually bite into... this over cooking of food has happened the last 3 occasions so will not longer be going back and the rudeness of the staff completely took me by surprise. Would no longer recommend this pub to anyone.

Well that was a great surprise for a Vegan meal! My Mediterranean Roasted vegetable Tart (with Turmeric pastry) was delicious and very filling. A nice and very tasty surprise was the sweet chilli jam hidden under the Roasted Vegetables. My lunch date had the Rump Steak 8oz medium rare and didn’t stop raving about how tender it was. Perfectly cooked and presented, both meals. Great job Chef and White Lion going above and beyond to ensure customer safety and comfort during these difficult times. Highly recommended a visit.

This is the perfect pub for a nice quiet family lunch! I visited with my family, including my 10 month old baby. I was pleased to find they had high chairs to accommodate for babies. We were sat by a cosy little fireplace, which was a perfect way to warm up on a rainy afternoon. The food was lovely with generous portion sizes, and the staff were very friendly and attentive to us. Would definitely recommend!

Visited this lovely old pub yesterday and again today for lunch whilst staying for a few days in the area. Went for light bites which consisted sandwich meals. Really nice and ample, good value. Staff very pleasant and courteous. Would recommend this pub.

Pop into this pub on 1 sunday only for 1 drink then went back yesterday 28 feb 2020 the food 10/10 the staff also were 10/10 they made you feel so welcome this pub is well worth the visit and will make u want to go again wouldn't let me show pics of food but really nice

The ancient inglenook fireplace that should be the showpiece of the place hadn't been cleaned in ages - piles of ashes everywhere. It looked like that place in the Philippines after volcano had erupted. Getting served at the bar took forever.Beer fine so will give one star. Still getting threatening letters from their cowboy parking operator after the previous visit.

Came for the first time for a birthday. Very accommodating staff. Food excellent and the cauliflower cheese was really good. Sea bass dish beautifully presented and very tasty. Definitely will be coming again and would recommend.

Came in for sunday lunch with my family. The lady behind the glasses (believe her name was Jody) was so friendly and helpful. She gave me great recommendations as to what we should eat and drink, and when we had our meals, she checked on us several times and asked if we needed anything. The food was fantastic and great value for money. The pub was extremely busy but the food came out quickly and was piping hot. Credits to the chefs and all the staff at the white lion. Safe to say I will be telling my friends about this place and be coming in more often!

Four steaks four different temps absolute perfection juicy and tender to last bite had great service on bar and had a great laugh with the staff as always will be back been told we need to try the chicken pie so thats next on our agenda look forward to seeing Steve sian and their team

I visited the White Lion yesterday and with all its little nooks and it’s low ceilings, it’s certainly a charming little place! Staff were warm and welcoming, exactly how a pub should be! Great choice of food and drinks. Will definitely be back!!!

Really enjoyed our visit, lovely old pub with very friendly staff. Great food & good value. Visited in December and the outside lights gave a festive feel, looked very pretty.

Parked up and brought 3 friends to this pub after a walk, a week later I get an £85 parking ticket! Nobody mentioned anything about warning about the parking, neither the bar staff or the waiter who brought us our food! What a disgrace!!!!

I have to say the Sunday Roasts have improved no end! presentation, quality and value for money! The staff here really do go out of their way to look after you!

My husband visits here for lunch with a friend occasionally and sings the praises of the burgers and has promised to bring me here for lunch. However, today he received a 50% off main courses voucher so we booked a table early - to avoid disappointment! I chose the grilled chicken with ribs, chips side dressed salad and coleslaw...he had a mixed grill - both meals excellent value even at the normal menu price. Well cooked and lovely, hot and tasty. Very nice atmosphere and serving staff welcoming and efficient. Will definitely visit again soon!

Prawn cocktail was the worst i ever had. About 4 small prawns on green leaves which taste horrible. Main meal was ok. Pudding no whipped cream instead had to choose ice cream. Eton mess was off the menu so had to choose another pudding which was 50p cheaper but not offer a refund. Will not be coming back anytime soon. Will make sure i check reviews before eating out again.

Well the bar and waiting staff are a lot more pleasant and organized than last year...New management has cracked the whip.....now get in kitchen and Have a word with your Chefs...sorry Cooks....actually lovely mix grill for me...but why can u not serve a family of 6 all together ....I cook for tables of 20/30 All go out generally same time...put your phone's down and concentrate...wasn't busy.....White lion is a lovely pub/restaurant....and good luck to new management....Have a fantastic Christmas and New year....it will be a busy one

Came here to give a try as Heard was under new management and hasn't it changed we felt at home the staff were lovely and seemed like a family Sian the assistant manager was next to none and really observant and the food was great will definitely be coming back as it has changed so much since our last visit

Went here for dinner and the staff really don't seem that bothered. We ordered the calamari which was supposed to come with lemon mayonnaise - it arrived with a thick lumpy cream which we were later told was sour cream as they had run out of mayonnaise. Think they thought we wouldn't notice! They also didn't clear the plates from two courses.

I must say the quality of the food has improved so much, and the atmosphere created by the new Management is of a high quality!

Went with 2 family members for Sunday Lunch. Excellent value for the 3 Course. Service good and the food was hot, well cooked and good quality. Drinks also are reasonably priced. Overall a pleasant experience.

I put over £100 over this pub's tills the other day and what do I get? A demand for £85 from a rip-off cowboy parking outfit. No other pub in the district feels the need to do this sort of thing.

went for a Sunday lunch and was so happy with the quality of food served and the service delivered. the staff were friendly and treated you like old friends, they handled any problems calmly, quickly and politely. food was presented nicely and the place has a great menu. overall a great trip.

I took my wife here for our kid's birthday as she wanted to go here after a recommendation from a colleague at work and wow they didn't lie. We had a Sunday Lunch and lets put it like this they will see me a lot over the winter period as the roast beef was cooked so perfectly I was cheeky enough to ask the chef how I can do it at home and of course, he gave me some pointers!

Complete hellholle with staff who do not care about the terrible service they provide. Waited over an hour for our food. Called the manageress over to complain who told us that our starter plates had only just come back into the kitchen. They were left on our table for more for over half an hour by the incompetent staff. They do not care about the terrible service they provide. Lazy staff that belong down the job centre signing on. We left before our mains came out. Disgusting.

The white lion is a fantastic pub in the heat of Warlingham that serves great food and has a wide selection of beers and wines, nice outside seating area and child friendly. Great for lunch or dinner 👍

Once again a pub that could do so much better and now the beer is gone up in price and down in quality. The food if you can wait forty five minute and thats when its not busy. Maybe if you have low expectations of your night out this is the place to be.

My family and I love the White Lion, it has a lovely atmosphere and welcoming staff however our recent visit yesterday left us disappointed. We ordered 4 meals at the bar, all consisting of quick grill items (namely, steak) etc. And as it was a Sunday evening, there was not many people there, and even less people ordering food. 45 minutes passes with no sign of our food coming so I ask the bar. The kind member of staff offered to check in with the kitchen when I was then told "it was on the hot plate and should be out soon" - we received our food 10 minutes later. When I was at the bar a lady approached me and pointed out some people getting refunds, seemingly we were not the only ones fed up of waiting! She also told me she experienced the same thing herself not too long ago.

I had the same experience of being fined £85 from Euro car parks for parking in the white lion pub carpark. Never in my life have I been charged for visiting a pub and parking in the pub carpark. I will never again visit the white Lion

Having visited the Lion a year ago and been disappointed I was dubious about coming here tonight. Happy to say that it is now a friendly, happy pub that I remember from many years ago. The new manager gave us a warm welcome and we spent a good few hours shooting the breeze with a large group of friends in what must be the happiest and warmest surroundings in the area. After being put off before I’ll definitely be back now. A step change and a welcome one in more ways than one.

Great place to drink but the food left a large amount to be desired , dry chicken and bacon salad with brown chunky lettuce leaves , others had over cooked calamari and we waited 45 mins for it all

but for food - no. mostly frozen microwaved fayre - stick to the crisps and pork scratchings - shame really as it used to be very good

We had our deughters christening here yesterday for 50 guests. We have previously had a christening and wake here. The food was delicious, it was served hot and they were very generous with the quantities provided. There was a good selection of food too on the buffet menu. All our guests commented how nice the food was. The staff were really friendly and helpful and nothing was a problem. The only downfall was there wasn’t quite enough seating for all our guests so some spilled outside but that wasn’t a problem as it was a nice day. Thank you Steve and your team for making our daughters christening a day to remember. :)

A great setting with options for both modern dining and cosy nooks and snugs for a quiet pint. There's always been a good range of beers on offer and when we've eaten there it's been good, traditional pub grub. Only order the gammon if you're hungry, otherwise it feeds at least two!

Went to the White Lion for lunch and was massively disappointed. No quality and all was very low grade and burnt. Even for a chain pub I was expecting better. Sadly won’t be going back

Had lunch here with my family and it was awful. Being a such an old, historic pub, it has great potential to be lovely. Sadly, we were really disappointed. When we arrived nobody came to greet us and show us to a table. We found our reserved table and sat ourselves down. The waitress brought us our menus and after waiting for 15 mins we went to look for her to take our order. We were told it would be quicker if we ordered at the bar. So we did. We had three roast dinners, a pie and posh fish and chips. 20 mins later, no sign of food so we asked how long it would take - "about 20/25 mins from ordering I guess" was a very unsure staff member's response. Another 20 mins later I chased again as my children were starting to get "hangry". I was told they didn't know what was happening as they were at the bar. I asked them to find out, which they did and they said the chef was doing all the puddings for other tables first then getting to ours. About 50 mins from ordering the food came. The roast potatoes were good and piping but the meat in our roasts were dried out and cold (clearly been sitting out for a while), the veg looked anaemic and limp, stuffing was like a mini rock cake, fish was overcooked and cold, though chips were nice and hot. The order of cooking and playing up was clearly messed up. I think o ly one chef was working and there were lots of tables, with many disgruntled customers. Won't be going back. Go to the Horseshoe pub next door instead all!

We were a party of 6, ordered starters and main courses and not one of us enjoyed our meal. All of the hot starters were burnt. I ordered a 'classic' prawn cocktail which was actually 2 iceberg lettuce leaves with 6 prawns and a dollop of Marie Rose sauce most probably from a jar. The mains were no better - dried out burgers which did not come with everything the menu described. The 'posh fish and chips' was not made with sea bass as the menu said but instead was battered haddock. All the side dishes were dried out and inedible. In fairness the chips weren't bad!!!

Lovely comfortable pub, friendly staff but giving up eating here. The last few meals have been terrible. Dry burnt chicken, battered fish awful. Will continue to drink here but won’t eat again
