Quiet country pub in the middle of nowhere. Met with friends for-dinner. Food and drink options were good. It’s decent pub grub. We enjoyed our time here and would go back again.

We moved into the area a year ago and sadly only just found this little nugget of greatness. When we entered the pub was busy with locals , staff were so attentive and friendly . We felt welcome from the start . The food was ample portions and very very tasty , the wine was good quality and chilled to perfection. We will be back . If you are considering booking, do as you won't be disappointed.

This thatched and part 16th century country pub has, thankfully, not been trendily modernised. The cosy beamed bar is clearly popular, with a choice of well-kept real ales. The quiet, comfortable rooms are at the side, with picnic tables outside. The large beer garden offers extensive views across farmland. Foodwise, it's unpretentious, familiar pub fare (good steaks and pasta, but sloppy, dull curry). Wines at competitive prices. Excellent full English (but not too full) breakfast. This is the sort of pub that used to exist in many a village. Sadly, they're fading away.

We came here for Easter Sunday Lunch/dinner. Opted for the roast beef and all the trimmings. It was lovely well worth the money. I even managed to fit a dessert in. Staff were great and my only disappointment was gravy had already been poured on my dinner. My fault, but I would have expected it to be served in a jug. Will know next time to ask for no gravy!

Visited for lunch for the second occasion, although not booked we were shown to a table immediately after being warmly welcomed. Service was very quick, the staff were very attentive, the menu was varied and would suit all palettes. The food was excellent, plentiful, freshly prepared, hot, appetisingly served and very well priced. We were a party of three, all had different meals and all were very well pleased. I would have no hesitation in dining there again and also recommending others. Try the sausages, mash and vegetables, you won't be disappointed.

Fabulous roast dinner. A big plateful of food: several slices of roast beef, large hot and crispy Yorkshire pudding, perfect roast potatoes (fluffy inside and crispy outside), good selection of veg (carrots, broccoli and mange tout) covered with plenty of gravy. Cauliflower cheese and spiced red cabbage served on the side. We also had a pint each and the total bill was £40 for two. The only fault I could pick was that the beef was well done (but it was still delicious!).

If you hanker after a pint of beer, a large plate with a roast, Yorkshire pudding, a tremendous array of vegetables followed by a traditional apple crumble or something like that, this is you place. Add attractive friendly barmaids and the realisation that there is the remains of a large wartime airfield adjacent, all that is missing is an MG and the sound of Merlin engines warming up.

There is a sign outside the White Horse that claims Fresh Local Produce. The starters, deep fired cheese wedges and buffalo wings followed by battered haddock with chips, peas and tartare sauce. All commercial prepared and bought in frozen except the sauce which was very chunky with very little mayo added. The wings had an uncooked pepper or chilli sauce poured over the crispy coating making it soggy and bitter. The fish had been put into the deep fryer before the oil was hot enough so that when the batter was cut oil leaked out. I told the waitress and then the manageress about the fish and also told her that I did not want frozen chips. I was told they would tell the chef. No offer to change anything and no feedback from the chef. As there was a family with a child seated behind me I did not want spoil their evening so paid the bill , no discount for uneaten food, and left. The only fresh item was the salad garnish. No fresh food as the sign stated.

We were here for a family party. The garden was made available from 3pm and the marquee and outsde/inside bar from 6pm. A warm sunny Easter Saturday turned cold when the sun went in. The pub and grounds were lovely...just needed heating on to keep guests warm. Other family members were staying here and were soon putting on different clothes, and jackets etc. I ended up sitting in the pub and having a coffee to warm me up! Even the bbq food didn't keep me warm. Nice pub, good selection of drinks and food, just need to consider lighting the log burner once the sun goes in!

Very nice for a causal type meal. The staff were very very good. The table we were on was next to the bar door and the language was a little ripe. The landlord did request that this ceased which it did to a degree. Anyhow, another table became available and we requested a move. The girls were very apologetic and really did their best to accommodate our demands! Our meal was very nice. I had whitebait which was the same as anywhere else and hubby had chilli beef and noodles which were very nice. Mains we had a Tai curry and beaded chicken with veg. Again very nice. Wanted a pudding but to full (as usual!) Enjoyed our time here and the staff really made a difference making us feel welcome. The beer was excellent and the glass of red wine I had was good too.

We had often driven by this pub and said to each other we should try the food there sometime. On returning from our holiday abroad on driving home in need of food we decided to give the White Horse Inn a try. We walked in and was greeted by the friendly waitress and asked if we had booked, we were shown to a table in a very musky dark corner, old books everywhere. We ordered drinks and were given menus to look at. Half hour later very hungry and still no waitress to take our order, my husband went in search of the bar for more drinks and asked if we could order. Our starters eventually arrived and were lovely, chicken strips and Brie wedges .On the table over in the other corner the poor woman ordered twice and was told they no longer had any of the choices left. After another long wait our mains turned up, I had ordered pork chop, mash with a stilton sauce , my hubby sausage and mash with onion gravy, looked very nice but oh what a disappointment my pork chop was still very pink as I cut into it , my sauce changed colour. I was no longer hungry waited for my hubby to finish his meal, which was nice. I suggested we complain to the waitress, we sat awhile as no one had bothered to come to the table to see if our meal was ok . We decided to leave, eventually found a waitress on the bar , complained about the pork chop being incorrectly cooked and was told the chef would be told and we could have a free cup of coffee as a sorry gesture, as she said there would be no reduction on our bill. We paid our bill of over £45 and won't be going back.

We went for Sunday lunch and came back very disappointed. It was very expensive (£12.50 for a roast!) and not worth the money! Potatoes and veg were hard, meat was tough, stuffing was rock solid. We ordered sandwiches as a what we thought would be a light lunch (which by the way were huge and complete with a side salad and chips!!!). I feel its time to write what I think about this place, its a shame because its my local but I feel I should write an honest review if you are thinking of spending £50+ on a meal for two.Last time I ate there I had to send my meal back because it was inedible, although I was disappointed I was relieved when the waitress agreed with me and took the whole meal off the bill. It was the pork belly and apple with mash. The pork was hard and the fat was like rubbery fat instead of melt in the mouth. The mash had been so microwaved that it was a weird consistency. Anyhoo we went back tonight to give it a final chance to see if things had improved. Firstly I want to say that as an average member of the public even I logically come to the conclusion with a range of food that big, it just cant be fresh produce. I would say half the choice on the menu and concentrate on getting things right! Any way, the waitress was friendly and polite but didn't remove the wine or water glasses from our table so we had 6 glasses on our small table for two. We ordered bread and dipping oil but were presented with two white round par baked rolls, which isn't really the idea. The olives were ok, but I would have preferred less but nicer ones. ShameThe steak was cooked nicely but had a run of chewy fat through it which spoilt it but it couldn't be helped the steak itself seemed good quality apart from my unlucky chewy fat. Chips were good. The deserts are always the same round cheesecakes and crumbles, obviously bought in from somewhere. Cant we have a home baked desert for a fiver please? Finally time and time again they run out of things..tonight was thai night but no prawns or noodles?! No pies no taglitelli......I have observed in the bar that they run out of ice one night.....and another vodka....something is not right. We had a xmas meal there too but no effort to make the tables xmassy...no tablecloths, no twinkle lights and no xmas music, it really was just another night to take our money with little effort to make it special. I cant remember how many times I have complained about the ladies loo. No handtowels to dry your hands, no locks on the doors, no soap. This place is such a little goldmine but it lacks tlc and no one seems to love it enough to make it perfect. A bit of a cash cow. Finally....we loved the breakfast but stopped going when they changed it to a buffet....everything was just wet because the lids were on for ages....For £9 it should be cooked fresh. We paid £50 tonight and wish we hadn't. Finally (again)......sausage and mash probably the best night so enjoy. x

On our 1st attempt to eat here and after my husband had enquired about eating in the restaurant earlier in the day, we were told they had just had a large party in the restaurant and we would have to wait 40 mins just to have our order taken, so we left. Our next visit was a Saturday lunchtime and a party of 16 had just arrived and again we were told we would have to order quick or wait around 40 mins for our order to be taken. The waitress was extremely unwelcoming and unfriendly, we felt totally uncomfortable the whole time we were there. Once our meal was served we were left with no offer of more drinks or dessert, so we paid and left, never never again. Clearly they cannot handle more than 1 or 2 tables at a time.

We were being treated to dinner out by an elderly relative therefore the menu had to be conservative and the prices reasonable. The White Horse at Withersfield has the advantage of being fairly local with a menu that offers decent choices of main courses from around £9 up to £19. We started with a bowl of olives with our drinks - a large bowl of herby green olives were somewhat salty but very good and obviously not straight from the fridge, therefore an early plus point. Service was attentive and we were congratulated on our choices from the cheaper end of the menu. Home made burgers were juicy and obviously as described and came with giant onion rings in excellent light batter and very good coleslaw. The belly pork was perfect; tender and melting in the mouth - well the morsel I stole from my husbands plate was! He expressed disappointment with the accompanying apple fritter but he is notoriously picky in these matters. The elderly relative asked for 'normal' mash to replace the sweet potato version with her slow cooked shoulder of lamb which came as promised in a giant portion. The desert menu looked enticing but we decided that puddings would be pure gluttony and did not indulge. In deference to the relative, we ate in the restaurant area with its very pleasant decor and ambiance. If I was being hyper-critical, the table could have done with a good scrub but it was set with nice cutlery and proper napkins - more plusses from the ER. On previous visits we have eaten in the bar area with is a bit more lively but we were very happy on this occasion to be in the quieter restaurant. The service was attentive early on but we waited some time for sauces for our burgers as things were getting busier by this stage although this did not detract from our enjoyment of our meal. The ambience is such that we could enjoy our conversation without overly intrusive background music. We had a leisurely and very tasty dinner in very pleasant surroundings. Overall, I would recommend the White Horse. The owners are clearly working hard to promote the place - we saw signs for sausage and mash evenings on Mondays. The menu delivers its promises with good value, tasty food.

Made our way to this lovely old Pub/Restaurant after recommendation. On a cold and miserable day the blazing fire cheered us up. Very good Light Lunch menu including Jacket Potatoes, many and varied sandwiches, Omelettes etc. etc. Our party of three tried 3 cheese Ploughmans, Jacket Potato with cheese, and Chicken Piri Piri open sandwich on fresh crusty bread. All were excellent with prices a little below average. Cricket fans will be interested in the association with Donald Bradman. Very nice Restaurant overlooking the garden. Good selection of main meals, with something for everyone. Check out the specials including Thai evening, free bottle of wine with two steaks, and even better FREE sausage and mash on Mondays until supplies run out. We hear you should plan to arrive when doors open or after 7.30 p.m. We will be back.

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Very rude landlord not at all sympathetic to an autistic young adult whom had never been in a pub before wasn’t sure what he was doing, was told to leave as he didn’t speak to the landlord on entry and didn’t order a drink straight away he was finding his bearings as being autistic was in a very unfirmiliar atmosphere
