Food review as did not stay at the premises. 4 adults 2 toddlers 1 new born and the staff were so accommodating. Even finding teeny tiny cutlery for the 2 kiddos. I went in expecting standard pub grub and left impressed with how well the pub nailed simple fayre. I had the pie, mash and mushy peas. The gravy was next level, the mash as near as damnit close to perfect as you can make it, I suspect much better was involved here..and the pie was superb and I believe locally sourced. All other adult meals were well presented and received and no complaints from the kiddos. I would have genuinely given this place 5 stars for its understated yet excellent execution but.... apparently there was no mint sauce. No mint sauce at a pub that regularly serves roast, I don't believe it, I can't believe it and I won't believe it.

I recently visited the Bushel Pub in Bury St Edmund’s and had a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great spot to relax. Our server, Abbie, was exceptional—she was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Unfortunately the few staff on duty on a Saturday were overwhelmed. There was a long wait for being served drinks and then an hour wait for food we ordered. The Bushel are advertising for staff for front and back of house, however it is a Greene King hotel/pub in Bury St Edmunds and the GK management from head office should be rolling up their sleeves and supporting the overwhelmed staff on duty. The food was also a real let down with one of the party being ill later in the night and all of the next day. Not a good advert for GK at all.

Visited Sunday evening 7.30 and pub very quiet. Beautiful interior with traditional style pub stools and tables and separate nicely decorated dining area. A lovely pub spoilt by Greene King mass produced 'school dinner' type food served by surly staff. I love draught Abbot. No Abbott, not even bottled! So a pint of IPA was nice enough to go back for a second. This was provided with the usual misty effect before an expected clarity. Not this one! As I took it back to the table, if anything the beer got dirtier, and I realised it more mud than bubbles with no chance of it settling for months! We stayed here for 3 nights and had a generally good experience of this cosy hotel which was very tastefully decorated for Christmas , not overdone. Our room opposite the car park was very clean and comfortable. Housekeeper Dawn and waitress Lia were both very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed chatting to them, Dawn in particular was very chatty so it was very sociable which we really enjoyed. Sadly the food just did not match up- I only complained once at our first night dinner (and Lia offered free coffee but that wasn't the point) but after that we just decided not to blame the waiting staff by complaining further but there were several instances of the wrong food being brought or not available , the full English items were mostly badly burnt. (and what is the point of burning a lemon half when a slice of fresh lemon was all that was required?) and most of the food was very unappetizing. The menu was sadly lacking in any green vegetables apart from peas and/or sprouts but the latter only with turkey dinner which we didn't want. The 'fresh' garden salad only contained watermelon from its listed ingredients , the rest was little gem and watercress, so no rocket, spring onion, or fresh mint. There were no vegetable options on the sides menu either. Lovely front of house staff but you need a new chef!

We’ve been going to Bushell for a few years now for Saturday afternoon food and drinks, but this time we had a real life Fawlty Towers experience 🤣 We had our food and were happily drinking and chatting away when this man appeared out of a sudden and put “Reserved” sign on out table and literally told us that we have to leave NOW! No apologies, no advance warning, nothing. That Welsh Basil Fawlty literally just came and said “You need to pay your bill and leave now, I’m the Manager here and I’m telling you to go”. And he didn’t want to listen what we have to say, he just shouted “Leave now!” and left And funny thing is that there were other tables available and we weren’t loud or disruptive in any way, we are 2 middle aged couples just having a few drinks and a meal. So, if you fancy being kicked out in the middle of your time in the pub, Bushel is the place. But I don’t think we’ll be going there again

I went there for dinner recently with a small party and with a reservation but was disappointed. It seems to have gone downhill lately. This visit reminded me of Fawlty Towers. It was not very busy but there was a queue of people waiting to be served. The manager was grumpy and uninterested in any customers except the two apparently unhappy travellers for whom he was looking for alternative accommodation. He shouted instructions to the bar staff who ignored him. The bar staff looked like they were 3/4 of the way through a 24-hour shift. It seemed that the queue of customers was a burden to be tolerated. There was only one young lad running about trying to do everything but appearing to have no clue what he was doing. Our reserved table was not ready and full of the previous occupants’ food but the young lad didn’t know how to clear it. After waiting, we found a new bar table and then rejoined the queue to order food and drinks. Not surprisingly only the first half of the order appeared and the young lad scurried away to the kitchen to find the other half. To their credit the first half was very nice but the second was not. An example being the BBQ chicken which, the young lad confirmed, had been hurriedly microwaved. This left it discoloured, hard and dry and drowned in BBQ sauce.

It has a small beer garden outside for those rare sunny days and its internal decor is what you would want from a traditional pub not out dated, clean and well planned. I used to love this place when I lived in Bury, but came back last weekend for Sunday lunch and it was honestly awful! We waited 50minutes just to get our started and then they only brought half the order out and it was masivly undercooked. The waitor didn't have a clue what he was doing and no customer service skills. After over an hour we got our mains are it was truly awful! Food was cold, rock hard roast carrots, frozen stuffing balls, burnt Yorkshire puddings, fatty meat, some poor excuse for cauliflower cheese and a tiny bit of cabbage for £14 a head. Our 2 year old had the kids potion and honestly had the same amount of food on his plate for £4 as we had for £14. We complained and got £15 back but honestly if it was a pay after I would have left £10 for the drinks and walked out. Still annoyed about this a week later times are hard for alot of us at the moment and if you decide to treat yourself and go out for a meal you expect it to be worth your money. Sadly a place I once loved I don't think I'd return.

Situated withing yards of the beautiful town centre. A comfortable, friendly establishment. Busy of a night time, but could not hear any noise from downstairs. Very comfortable.

A real disappointment. Having been before and had decent food (I appreciate this is not going to be cordon bleu, but still...) I was really gutted to have such poor food. We had a Sunday roast and the beef was like what I can only imagine picking up an old cold car tyre to chew on would be. It was really cold, more fat and gristle than Diego Maradonna and the taste was not great... cull heifer for sure. The batter puddings were rubbish! You know when the pointing between bricks on a wall starts to crumble? Usually when the builder has used too much sand in their muck? Well this is where we were with texture on the puddins. They were about as fresh as nineteenth century relic, any moisture had evaporated pre-war. Dry, crumbly and light.... to be fair if the chef was trying to make shortbreads, they wouldn't have been far out. The carrots were tasteless fat orange slugs with a hint of something sweet... candarel maybe? Three pieces of cauliflower for the cheese accompaniment, which tasted ok but again was about as warm as the UK at the moment. The stuffing... where to even start with the stuffing? It looked like it could have been a small preserved dung ball... perhaps from something like a pygmy hippo in size and I guess a similar colour thanks to the burnt nature of the ball. The texture was complex. The outer shell reminded me of being a child and having those ridiculous oversized gobstoppers, you know the ones that were a bit like trying to suck on a snooker ball and threatened to break your teeth as soon as you looked at it? Yeah that! Inside was a bit like sawdust. When you finally cracked the small poo open there was dry fluff inside. A burnt pygmy hippo sized ball of dry sage and onion-ness. To give the galley their due the cabbage was cooked well; al denté, well seasoned and probably the best part of the plate alongside the potatoes, which were crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The gravy was ok, bit watery, hot in the centre thanks to the poppety-ping machine, but ok. All in all a rollercoaster of emotions dredging up childhood memories, bush tucker trials and a fair amount of stomach acid. Returning for a Sunday roast? Not anytime soon, but they do a decent pint of Guinness. Sláinte.

My partner and I don’t venture out very often, however as it was payday we thought we’d go for a little lunch. What a mistake that was. Absolutely disappointing! A quiet Friday afternoon with no more than 15 people on location, the pub still with dirty tables and empty glasses laying around. Started off at the bar ordered a pint and coke, polite chap behind the bar no issues at all! Sat down with my first pint which had no head left when I arrived at the table (glasses need renovating or lines need cleaning) which I shook off as it wasn’t a big deal. Started ordering food and the menu was updated since my last visit which I thought was excellent as I had missed the bao buns. Food arrived, no sauces or condiments offered. I took one bite into one of the “bao buns” if you can even call them that, they’re more like big stuffed dumplings.. I had never been so disappointed before, flavourless, drier than the Sahara, but somehow chewy at the same time with a very very limited amount of meat in the actual bun, which had clearly also been overcooked in the microwave, I forced half down me and left the other 2.5 for the bin.. My main course wasn’t as disappointing the BBQ Chicken, the chicken bacon and beer cheese sauce were all faultless however receiving around 10 chips on my plate that were lukewarm really did let it down. My partner had no complaints, the frozen scampi was cooked perfectly to her liking… Throughout this experience my partner and I never recieved a check back, or I would’ve raised concerns with my issues and probably would have requested a refund at the time. Leaving the establishment we recieved no farewell.

We stumbled over the bushel on the way into town and as being a short walk from the train station it was ideal to stop by for one. We actually ended up staying there the whole evening. There was an amazing live music duo, great quality tasting beer and great attentive service from the team and the manager which we believed whom welcomed us in to start with. If you enjoy well looked after beer, great music and friendly service the Bushel is the place to be on a Friday night!

Same lovely pub and staff as ever but Greene King have allocated them a really limited, unappealing main menu. They used to as a hotel have a similar menu to the Fox that also has rooms. But at the moment seem to have a low-prep air fryer/microwave menu more seen on an estate pub. A lot of Iceland style reheated battered buffet type small plates, chicken nuggets/fish gougons/wings a couple of burgers, a pie, a few deep fried things. The Fox has a much wider and appealing menu so better choice at moment. It’s still a nice pub to have a drink in and staff trying their best with food that’s fundamentally cheap and nasty. Vegetables aren’t even a side order choice any more! We struggled to find something to choose and felt very disappointed.

It was pleasant enough. The place was clean and plates/glasses were cleared quickly. Food was good value. I left the bread in my sandwich as it was stale. Nobody asked me about it. There was quite a long wait at the bar for service. Due to the huge competition in the town, we probably wouldn’t return.

Got stamped for my free pint because it was raining hundreds of miles away in Manchester, thank you Greene King. But this pub is a lovely place to go for a drink and a meal with family/friends.

Lovely looking pub and friendly staff. Food is ok but possibly not ‘posh nosh’ if you were after something special.

What a fab stopover, we had 2 nights here around our son's wedding, couldn't have asked for better service. We has 2 great meals including a Sunday lunch for 17 of the family. The staff couldn't have been more accomodating. Water available and loos when the pub was open and level parking. Lovely walks through the fields with our dog, highly recommended. Thank you

Lively Pub with local charm. Super friendly landlord and welcoming crowd. There was a cheese tasting for everyone and we were able to sample about 10 different cheeses. Great way to get to talk with the locals and enjoy the evening
