Visited one Saturday lunch time. Had an enjoyable experience. The service was efficient and the food we consumed was of good quality and fresh. It was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday afternoon, but that was good for us as it meant plenty of choice for seating. The establishment does appear to be in need of repairs in certain areas, as can be seen on the attached image, but overall a pleasing atmosphere.

After traipsing across Bury St Edmunds to go for lunch, we got there only to find that the kitchen was closed so no food. Barman was average to say the least. Can't comment on the rooms. The pub looks great inside, I think we caught it on a very off day so we will go again in the future. The abbot ale was good though.

I went there for dinner recently with a small party and with a reservation but was disappointed. It seems to have gone downhill lately. This visit reminded me of Fawlty Towers. It was not very busy but there was a queue of people waiting to be served. The manager was grumpy and uninterested in any customers except the two apparently unhappy travellers for whom he was looking for alternative accommodation. He shouted instructions to the bar staff who ignored him. The bar staff looked like they were 3/4 of the way through a 24-hour shift. It seemed that the queue of customers was a burden to be tolerated. There was only one young lad running about trying to do everything but appearing to have no clue what he was doing. Our reserved table was not ready and full of the previous occupants’ food but the young lad didn’t know how to clear it. After waiting, we found a new bar table and then rejoined the queue to order food and drinks. Not surprisingly only the first half of the order appeared and the young lad scurried away to the kitchen to find the other half. To their credit the first half was very nice but the second was not. An example being the BBQ chicken which, the young lad confirmed, had been hurriedly microwaved. This left it discoloured, hard and dry and drowned in BBQ sauce.

A busy Friday afternoon/evening with a function going on in the restaurant . Only one bartender serving who was overwhelmed by number of people waiting to be served whilst trying to serve food at the same time. At one point the queue for the bar reached the entrance to the pub! Waited over 20 minutes to be served. Where was the management? My worst experience ever in one of my favourite pubs. Need more staff urgently!

First time visiting the Bushel as I am new to Bury. It was very quiet for a Saturday. We ordered some food and was told there would be a 30 minute wait. The food came out and did not look appetising! The battered halloumi was so greasy, the crispy new potatoes were not crispy. My friend had the bbq chicken and it looked like a dish that had been covered in sliced cheese and put in the microwave. Overall for a small menu the food was not good.

So I’ve been to the Bushel several times now it’s my ‘local’ and I have to say it’s a really nice town centre pub. It has a small beer garden outside for those rare sunny days and its internal decor is what you would want from a traditional pub not out dated, clean and well planned. Food wise I have eaten there a few times and it has been top tier, I’m not sure if Green King pubs normally have the same menu cooked to the same standard but I would highly recommend it if your hungry and want some good food!

Sad to say having visited this pub for Sunday lunch today, was at best disappointing. As described by a previous review the lunch was of a very poor standard. On arriving we were met by lack lustre staff who provided very little communication. The food... Hard carrots(not roasted) and brussels, Sludgy cauliflower cheese and burnt yorkshire pudding. Beef was very fatty and nut roast wellington did not appear to contain any nuts! Despite the lovely appearance of the pub itself the whole experience lacked substance and sadly we won't be back and unable to recommend to others.

I go here quite often for the quiz night, which is hosted by Josh. He has a unique way of doing it, which everybody seems to enjoy. It's a fun night out and we look forward to it, thank you Josh and the team. The staff are always friendly and helpful , and seem to work really well as a team. Food is consistently good, and I can normally get what I want to order. My only complaint would be the amount of chips seems to have been cut down recently and is a bit on the stingy side. Aside from this, I really enjoy going to The Bushel and hope to carry on for a long time to come.

I used to love this place when I lived in Bury, but came back last weekend for Sunday lunch and it was honestly awful! We waited 50minutes just to get our started and then they only brought half the order out and it was masivly undercooked. The waitor didn't have a clue what he was doing and no customer service skills. After over an hour we got our mains are it was truly awful! Food was cold, rock hard roast carrots, frozen stuffing balls, burnt Yorkshire puddings, fatty meat, some poor excuse for cauliflower cheese and a tiny bit of cabbage for £14 a head. Our 2 year old had the kids potion and honestly had the same amount of food on his plate for £4 as we had for £14. We complained and got £15 back but honestly if it was a pay after I would have left £10 for the drinks and walked out. Still annoyed about this a week later times are hard for alot of us at the moment and if you decide to treat yourself and go out for a meal you expect it to be worth your money. Sadly a place I once loved I don't think I'd return.

A real disappointment. Having been before and had decent food (I appreciate this is not going to be cordon bleu, but still...) I was really gutted to have such poor food. We had a Sunday roast and the beef was like what I can only imagine picking up an old cold car tyre to chew on would be. It was really cold, more fat and gristle than Diego Maradonna and the taste was not great... cull heifer for sure. The batter puddings were rubbish! You know when the pointing between bricks on a wall starts to crumble? Usually when the builder has used too much sand in their muck? Well this is where we were with texture on the puddins. They were about as fresh as nineteenth century relic, any moisture had evaporated pre-war. Dry, crumbly and light.... to be fair if the chef was trying to make shortbreads, they wouldn't have been far out. The carrots were tasteless fat orange slugs with a hint of something sweet... candarel maybe? Three pieces of cauliflower for the cheese accompaniment, which tasted ok but again was about as warm as the UK at the moment. The stuffing... where to even start with the stuffing? It looked like it could have been a small preserved dung ball... perhaps from something like a pygmy hippo in size and I guess a similar colour thanks to the burnt nature of the ball. The texture was complex. The outer shell reminded me of being a child and having those ridiculous oversized gobstoppers, you know the ones that were a bit like trying to suck on a snooker ball and threatened to break your teeth as soon as you looked at it? Yeah that! Inside was a bit like sawdust. When you finally cracked the small poo open there was dry fluff inside. A burnt pygmy hippo sized ball of dry sage and onion-ness. To give the galley their due the cabbage was cooked well; al denté, well seasoned and probably the best part of the plate alongside the potatoes, which were crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The gravy was ok, bit watery, hot in the centre thanks to the poppety-ping machine, but ok. All in all a rollercoaster of emotions dredging up childhood memories, bush tucker trials and a fair amount of stomach acid. Returning for a Sunday roast? Not anytime soon, but they do a decent pint of Guinness. Sláinte.

My partner and I don’t venture out very often, however as it was payday we thought we’d go for a little lunch. What a mistake that was. Absolutely disappointing! A quiet Friday afternoon with no more than 15 people on location, the pub still with dirty tables and empty glasses laying around. Started off at the bar ordered a pint and coke, polite chap behind the bar no issues at all! Sat down with my first pint which had no head left when I arrived at the table (glasses need renovating or lines need cleaning) which I shook off as it wasn’t a big deal. Started ordering food and the menu was updated since my last visit which I thought was excellent as I had missed the bao buns. Food arrived, no sauces or condiments offered. I took one bite into one of the “bao buns” if you can even call them that, they’re more like big stuffed dumplings.. I had never been so disappointed before, flavourless, drier than the Sahara, but somehow chewy at the same time with a very very limited amount of meat in the actual bun, which had clearly also been overcooked in the microwave, I forced half down me and left the other 2.5 for the bin.. My main course wasn’t as disappointing the BBQ Chicken, the chicken bacon and beer cheese sauce were all faultless however receiving around 10 chips on my plate that were lukewarm really did let it down. My partner had no complaints, the frozen scampi was cooked perfectly to her liking… Throughout this experience my partner and I never recieved a check back, or I would’ve raised concerns with my issues and probably would have requested a refund at the time. Leaving the establishment we recieved no farewell.

Same lovely pub and staff as ever but Greene King have allocated them a really limited, unappealing main menu. They used to as a hotel have a similar menu to the Fox that also has rooms. But at the moment seem to have a low-prep air fryer/microwave menu more seen on an estate pub. A lot of Iceland style reheated battered buffet type small plates, chicken nuggets/fish gougons/wings a couple of burgers, a pie, a few deep fried things. The Fox has a much wider and appealing menu so better choice at moment. It’s still a nice pub to have a drink in and staff trying their best with food that’s fundamentally cheap and nasty. Vegetables aren’t even a side order choice any more! We struggled to find something to choose and felt very disappointed.

The Bushel at Greene King Inns My husband and I stayed at The Bushel from March 3 to March 5th. I booked direct because it was the best price. Our booking included 20% off food ordered at the inn. When we ordered our first meal, we were told we needed a code that we should have received in an email that was separate from our booking confirmation. I had not received such an email. I was told that I cannot get the discount without the code. I overheard one of the employees saying that people aren’t getting their codes. Of the three meals we ate there, we only got the discount once, and that was because I persisted. The worst part for me wasn’t the extra cost, it was that the employees didn’t do anything to fix this situation. Our room was adequate, but not worth the price we paid. Some of the food was good, but the Sunday roast (I had chicken, hubby had beef) was a disappointment. I don’t believe one bit of seasoning was used on my overcooked chicken. One night, we ordered fish and chips, only to be told that they were out of fish. The staff was helpful overall (except for the discount issue). We had booked another night later in the month, but because of the establishment's ineptitude, we will be staying elsewhere.

Nice building but was very cold in there. The guy who served me kept apologising as he said wasn't normally behind the bar, which seemed a strange thing if you work in a pub. Took him a while to process the order, once again apologising The food arrived. My partner decided she'd have the steak pie, nice piece of grissle inside which put her off. I had the slimmest piece of fish, looked like the fillet had been sliced into two fillets After the meal the guy who had served us asked if everything was good My partner told him it was OK, he didn't bother asking why it was only OK. Certainly not a pub I would ever revisit

Very nice room but the favourable impression ends there. Check-in was efficient but y, not at all welcoming. We were handed keys but given no info about check out time, wifi etc Had to ask everything. We were told breakfast finished at 9.30 am. Came back from work engagement just after 10pm and were refused a drink in the bar. We (4 of us) asked why and were told 10.15 was closing time. We pointed out it's not 10.15 yet so we begrudgingly were served one round accompanied by a lecture about laws concerning pubs (all false). AT 9am I went to Breakfast only to be told, harshly, it finished at 9. I said we were told 9.30 at check in. The response was "No you weren't". I repeated we were told 9.30. The response was "Why would you be told that". I explained that I didnt know why but that's what we were told. Others in our party then showed up expecting breakfast to continue til 9.30. Eventually he relented and we were served but the atmosphere was horrible. What a start to the day! On departure we found out from the female member of our party that the cleaning maid had entered her room about 45min before check out time , complaining that the room was still occupied. Again, not a very nice start to her day. Every member of staff that we encountered was unfriendly and gave the impression that paying guests were a nuisance. All 4 members of our group were unanimous in the opinion that in spite of the nice rooms it was a very depressing stay due to the unfriendly, verging on hostile, attitudes of the staff.

The good breakfast couldn't make up for the poor quality rooms.

Meal was very nice and bearing in mind the lovely American gentleman behind the bar was in his own he did extremely well very nice man however after enjoying our meal we just popped out to have a vape only 4 of the 8 of us 4 still sat at table (so knew we wasn't leaving) as he saw us walking towards the door he shouted so whole pub looked round ladies you have a tab to pay this ruined it a little was very rude the way he went about this and let the experience down greatly

Was recommended to try here by a local shop keeper. Easily found a table as the pub was not that busy. However, had to wait some considerable time for our order to arrive, even though we saw no other food being served. The fish and chips were nice but a few more chips would have not gone a miss. My friend said her meal was lovely but would have eaten anything because of the wait. Unlikely to call in again as the delay was so long.

Terrible meal and rude staff. There was only one chef working ( over the Christmas period!)and we waited over an hour for a very unimpressive lunch. The manager was rude, dismissive and did not look like he enjoyed his job. It was a waste of money and we will not be returning. Food was really awful. Microwave rubbish.

Popped in for a quick G and T on my way home from a job two doors up. Despite my dirty workwear I received a very warm and friendly welcome. There was a good selection of gins and various tonics, I was even asked what...

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.
