Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

Booked for one night. A lovely place to stay. Staff are so friendly making for a great atmosphere. The food was superb. Would highly recommend and will definitely be making a return visit very soon. The only issue I can fault them on is the cleanliness was not 100%. The toilet was very dirty and hadn’t been flushed and the bathroom bin was full. Maybe a bit unfair to include in this review because I did not mention this to stafff. I’m sure they would have dealt with it immediately. Definitely a place to visit again.

Wow what a find! An attractive traditional pub in a lovely village setting serving delicious home cooked meals. Friendly landlord and landlady made us very welcome despite our late arrival after taxi delays. Also allowed us to wait (again) for our return taxi after everyone else had gone. If only we lived nearer we would return regularly.

Went to the Six Bells for the first time ever, enticed by their recent Facebook post about their new Autumnal menu. On first impression, it looks like a lovely, quaint country pub with thatched roof and cosy period interior. Arrived to find several items were off the menu, including the pork, the fish and chips and - to my utter disappointment - the beef casserole and dumplings: this was something I was really looking forward to trying as well, so the visit wasn't perhaps off to the best of starts. My husband opted for the ham, egg and chips, and I went for the sausages and mash. My husband enjoyed his and cleared his plate. I found the sausage a tad overpowering and very peppery. I managed one of the two sausages offered heavily disguised on my fork with mash and gravy to help it down; my husband helped himself to the other. The mash was OK (though I must admit I like my mash a bit more buttery and creamy), and I'm afraid to say the greens had no taste to them - loads of texture though. Maybe a few glazed carrot batons would've been a nicer accompaniment with a bit of tenderstem broccoli? The gravy, however, was gorgeous - deep rich flavour, which was heavenly. I can well imagine this with a full Sunday roast. Given the overall disappointment at the meal, however, I decided not to stay for dessert as originally intended before arriving at the pub.

Eat at this restaurant during a weekend visit to Bardwell. We thought that the food was very good and fair value and the service provided by the young lady who was our receptionist, bar maid and waitress all in one was exceptional! The only reason we didn't give 5 stars was the fact that the place could do with a bit of an update hut without spoiling it's charm if possible.

Despite living in the area, we had not visited the Six Bells before. A total delight. Set on the edge of Bardwell village, this picturesque pub has a wondeful garden with outdoor seating. A conservatory dining room also. The food was excellent with a reasonable selection on the menu and a few daily specials. The Old Speckled Hen was very well kept. And the pub also does accommodation. The owners/staff were very friendly. Can't wait for summer to come and eat outside. A little oasis of calm. Highly recommended.

An accidental outing after a missed bus, that turned into a surprisingly good dinner at a cozy country pub. The soufflé was far better than some 'high-end' chains (Looking at you, Raymond Blanc), and the crab was super fresh. We both had fish and chips, which was delicious (maybe a bit oily and batter heavy, but very tasty). The chips were chunky and very nicely cooked. All the portions were healthily sized (don't let the pictures fool you, the chips are huge). The coleslaw was creamy, crunchy and fresh. The pub seemed a bit short staffed and weren't the most attentive (it was quite busy on a weeknight), but the food arrived quickly.

The staff were really lovely and friendly and the pub isn’t bad, but the food was very disappointing. The single vegetarian option was asparagus, egg and hollandaise sauce for £15 which, compared to the rest of the food on the menu, felt ridiculous. The table next to us felt the same and our shared laughter certainly added to the friendly feeling of the place! Sadly they chose to eat somewhere else after reviewing the menu. The ‘dressed leaves’ was just a small pile of shredded iceberg lettuce with a bit of sauce on top. The Cajun chicken burger was lacklustre and the steak tough. We had a lovely evening, but wouldn’t eat there again or particularly recommend it.

The lunch is still memorable to this day and the salad was a triumph replete with fresh golden and red beets beautifully dressed with complimentary greens and chèvre. The French dip sandwich was also beautifully done with the nice addition of an onion ring. With such excellent food and ambience, I highly recommend this establishment.

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending
