Great ales, good prices and a pleasant and friendly environment

Walked all the way down Whiting Street to find the exceptional real ale pub promised by a sign in Abbeygate St. We thought it might be a special place, what with the description of several splendid ales on tap and a delightful retro atmosphere. What we found was in fact just another Greene King pub, with an uninspiring choice of beer. Still, a pint of Abbott and a glass of wine seemed very reasonably priced. Unfortunately despite being literally round the corner from the brewery and purporting to be a beer lover’s paradise, the Abbott was cloudy and past its best. Meanwhile my wife said the wine was practically undrinkable. We left.

Such a lovely Real Ale pub. Dog friendly Cash and card payments taken. Lovely land lord Gordon! The best, can’t do enough for you. Very welcoming to new visitors. Lovely secret Garden at the back. Great Staff! Highly recommended.

Such a cute little pub. Love the atmosphere. They serve local beer as well as other beer. I had the 5X a special brew with 12% alcohol. Love it. It has a black coffee after taste. There were 2 lads playing darts and the pub was buzzing with some locals. Second visit to this pub while in Bury. Very friendly atmosphere. Didn't purchased food so can't tell about the food.

Great little pub, which feels real and authentic, no snobby attitude here. If you want a taste of real, here it is. Recky had a 5X which is 12% strength. We met the locals and were chatting within seconds of entering. Awesome experience.

Fantastic traditional British pub on the outskirts of the town centre. Well maintained cask ales and lagers with bar snacks available. A friendly atmosphere throughout from the main bar, back bar and courtyard garden. We had our wedding reception here and could not thank Gordon and Claire enough for their hospitality.

Great old fashioned pub without the sawdust. Pub garden out the back which is great during those long nights. Fridays and Saturdays are best as they open longer hours. Great range of cask ales with around 5 barrels on offer all the time. Well worth the visit !

Great local boozer. Friendly staff and Gordon is a top bloke. Dart board too. Highly recommended by me!!

Thank God for one decent and traditional drinking pub in Bury St Edmunds. The landlord and his staff are friendly, the toilets are clean and you're not surrounded by people eating.

Excellent! Their beer is amazing, and the atmosphere completes a traditional style pub. If I didn't live over 200 miles away, this would be my regular.

They were VERY gentle when they handcuffed me, and their patrol vehicles are roomy and new. Overall, very professional. Will definitely get arrested by them again, for sure.

Since the new landlord has taken over there is often a real buzz in this pub. the beer is always great and it is often full of interesting characters. Always enjoy a visit to the Rose & Crown.

Small, quiet pub with decent beer and an old fashioned feel which is everything I like. What I don’t like is the barman condoning the ongoing conversation, clearly audible to the few of us in the bar, of the three locals trotting out all the usual lazy stereotypes, ‘them immigrants,work shy, grasping’, ‘I’m not racist but…” etc, I left .

Staff were very helpful and there was plenty of food.

Bit scruffy, but with six real ales the locals love it.

Old fashioned, basic pub. There are not many left but if you want to go for a good pint in an old fashioned atmosphere this is the place. Probably not everyone’s choice and interestingly clientele was almost exclusively male!

Lovely old style pub. Made welcome by the barman Daryl and customers. Would recommend to anyone that is looking for a good busy 'regulars' type pub.

Woah what a pub! Having been directed here by a chap in the Greene King brewery we then fell into conversation with Gordon behind the bar. He was delighted to show us around his old fashioned pub. We loved its dated style and the secret beer garden too.

Would of had higher score if they clean up dog poo from garden from their dog. But very friendly pub.

One of my favorite pubs in Bury and was always fun to drop in and looking forward to seeing what the new guy has done with the place but I’m hearing it’s been good things!

Now this place is the hidden gem. All you beer people visit this suntrap back courtyard, so peaceful and had the opportunity to sample marsher ipa. Quality beer stamped all over it.

Popular unrefined local with a good choice of quality real ales, and a compact outdoor area with around 8 tables, at least 5 of those catching daytime summer sun. No food at present, but always a warm welcome from friendly Landlord, Gordon, and chief Bar staff, Mandy.

Very underrated pub! This place is spit and saw dust, a much needed breath of musky air in a otherwise over crowded gastro pub engulfed town. The real ale is very good, kept at a decent temperature and its obvious the landlord keeps the lines in good condition. In short great pub but I wouldn't bring my middle class Mrs with me.

We were going to sit in garden and have a nice relaxing beer , we arrived with our dog ( on a lead) was told to go through to garden , as we got outside this huge dog lunged at our dog and was trying to bite my dog , so we promptly left as this nasty dog was not on a lead , I dread to think if I had my small grandchildren with me what would have happened. The person whose dog it was should have had it on a lead , very dangerous situation, hence I will never go back in that pub again , people need to keep there dogs on a lead if they are nasty

Great small pub, no gimmicks or gizmos. If its well kept real ale your looking for, this is THE pub for you. Gordon the lovely landlord takes great pride in looking after the SIX real ales 🍺 that are usually on tap. Come in, relax, take a beer. Posh it isn't, but it surely is bootiful !

I feel this pub has remained unchanged for decades. It holds the essence of quintessential British Pub dating back as far as living memory. The drinks are eternal, the staff are friendly and the locals are welcoming.

Popped in for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. Great place really friendly and helpful barmaid. No frills proper pub - loved it.

Local's local! But so friendly that I felt quite at home as an out of towner. Perfect for meeting up with friends for a quiet drink before going to the Theatre Royal.

Had lunch in the Rose and Crown whilst visiting the Xmas market. Please go and seek out. Wonderful food and beer away from the dreadful commercial outlets in the market. This is a pub how it should be. New landlord doing a fantastic job. Don,t bother with anything else in the town.

A true gem and perfectly preserved example of a truly traditional British pub. Regulars can be found playing dominoes or darts at the front, with the lovingly cared for leatherette saloon available at the back. The cosy, compact and quiet beer garden / courtyard is great too. The Greene King beers served here are the very best examples you'll find (the brewery is a few footsteps away!) and the rare Mild is legendary and always available, with many (including myself) traveling for miles just to sample it. The Landlord and Landlady are shining examples of the traditional hospitable and friendly hosts so rarely found these days - with plenty of biting wit and banter, should you wish to have a good chat! If you want to visit a proper British pub, ran with care and passion for generations, do visit here and show your support. They also do offsales (beer to takeaway), bar snacks and will get out the archive of weird and wonderful photos from over the decades if you ask nicely!

Excellent example of a town centre local. Nothing fancy but well kept Greene King beers and small lunches. Not overly busy when we visited on Saturday lunchtime but a steady stream of regulars.

A proper traditional old fashioned pub. The beer is superb and it offers a rare chance to sample XX mild from the brewery next door. The bacon and egg sandwich was just what was needed and it was a place where mates met to talk like pubs used to be. A classic well worth seeking out. Parking is difficult, but if you are lucky you will find a spot for an hour opposite.

Visited this pub for the first time. The landlord and lady are very welcoming and love a good chat and would highly recommend this pub as it is very traditional and the drinks are cheaper than most if not all the other pubs in the town.

A stone's throw from the brewery, excellent ales are served. This is a proper pub in the traditional mould. The landlords Tony and Liz are always at hand to give a warm welcome. One can imagine generations of happy Bury drinkers enjoying their pints. While at the same time you create great memories for yourself.

Good beer and she does a real mean Ham egg and chips and possibly the best Greene King beer in Bury St Edmunds the Abbot reserve is phenomenal

We felt like we'd gone back in time to a British pub of the 1960's / 1970's but it was no less enjoyable for that. An old style corner pub with old style decor, old style clientele, old style furniture. A proper pub with no frills or pretensions so what you see is what you get. A wonderful pub and long may it continue as there is a need for this type of establishment.

This pub has the longest serving publicans in Bury St Edmunds. Serves the best real ales and ham, egg and chips in the town. If you want an experience in a proper, traditional English pub look no further and ensure you take the time to visit this delightful pub.

It's probably a converted house, with two tiny bar rooms, and a central bar. In all its brown-painted glory it looks like it stepped out of the 1950s, but it isn't too stuck in the past - it does have WiFi and smart toilets (but watch all the steps ...). There's a tiny yard out the back for the smokers. I hate alcohol and was there for the regular monthly charity quizzes, so I can't comment on the beer or meals. But the couple that run it are wonderfully friendly and helpful, and I recommend it highly. Only downside is that even the locals with permits find it difficult to park so you'll probably have to walk quite a way to get there.

Quiet at the time I was there but some of the nicest people behind the bar that you could imagine! It feels like a local!! But nobody cares if you're not actually a local! (Unlike some places I've been to before)
