Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Very disappointed with our lunch today. The menu said toasted cheese and onion sandwich, fries and salad. When it arrived it was onion chutney, a few leaves of rocket. We have never been before and was so looking forward to it, but this really let us down. The food and hot drinks were not hot either. The staffs hospitality was superb. I don’t think we will be visiting again.

Recently had Sunday lunch here which was absolutely awful. The roast beef was tough as old boots and dry, the Yorkshire puddings were well risen and brown but cutting into them were raw, the roast potatoes were terrible. All in all not a very pleasant meal. Staff very miserable, not giving the feeling of being made welcome. Smile a bit more, works wonders.

My partner's family booked in for celebrating one of his sisters bithday. Best meal ever. The restaurant and staff are lovely. The starters are delicious especially scallops, fresh and juicy. We also had bread and butter from nibblers, wellcooked handmade bread I ever had. Mains are also great, can't fault a Steak cooked to perfection. We had a good time and will definitely go back.

A fantastic Saturday evening. Had good cocktails and drinks in the lounge as the bar was full. The atmosphere was lively and buzzing. The staff are cheerful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The food was excellent with a special mention for the pie! Interesting wine specials. I am dairy intolerant and as always found everyone very helpful at suggesting substitutions so that I could have an enjoyable meal. A waitress went to hand me a happy birthday plate and a colleague got her to return to the kitchen to double check it didn’t contain dairy. I appreciate the care and attention. Yes it was pricey but we thought it was worth it.

This is a very nice hotel - a bit old-fashioned, but that's part of its charm. Nice seating areas for pre-food drinks or tea etc etc BUT cannot recommend it for eating. It all feels as if it's gone to seed and needs a maitre d who cares about the place - crumbs on tables and chairs abound. And the service is very sloppy - orders are forgotten. And it is very expensive for pretty good to average pub food.

My wife and I celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary at The Angel Eaterie recently. We had a wonderful lunch. Service, atmosphere and food all excellent. This is a very reliable destination and one we have been enjoying for many years. We eat in other restaurants but always return to The Angel for those special occasions.

We had Sunday lunch here today which we have had on several occasions and it was disappointing. As locals we have used The Angel for many reasons and are proud it is a feature in our town. However if you eat in the restaurant pick your table carefully unless these things don't bother you: Several tables look into the kitchen as they leave the door open as a thoroughfare for the waiting staff Alternatively tables are in the entrance Alternatively you can sit in the middle row which accomodates larger groups or they sit 5 on a table for 4 The beef today was bland and 50% fat. Potatoes really good but a big price to pay for just the roasties Positives; Server for pre lunch drink in the bar excellent None of the above is the fault of our table waitress who was very good Previous experience of Jasmine the Food and Beverage Manager is excellent but today she was managing the Afternoon Teas in the Lounge We went to the first Steak Night in The Vaults this month and it was amazing but note again tables are "tight" For us the jury is out for the Eaterie but we have booked again for the monthly Steak Night

My partner and I had made the Angel our go to for dinner, for treats and special occasions alike. We’ve always found service to be exceptional and the food to be just as fabulous. I emailed to book us in for a Friday night in February for the set menu. We had to email as it’s not possible to book the set menu via the website booking system, something that they should look into doing. The confirmation had gone to my junk Mail so I’d nearly forgotten all about it as well. On arrival our coats were taken and we were shown to a table. We booked months in advance so we’re disappointed by the table placing right by the door that leads to the kitchen against a wall, much prefer the booth seats along the back wall, and booking so far in advance expected to receive one. On the table was a “Happy Anniversary” card, which confused us, as our anniversary isn’t until April, then a gentleman walked over and took it from my partners hand saying “we’ve put this on the wrong table”. Being gluten free I was walked through my options, which are always plentiful here, but on this occasion we were both left very disappointed by the set menu options. No one goes out for dinner and gets excited by chicken breast as their protein main course. I personally am not a fish lover either and the vegetarian course of potato terrine doesn’t inspire anyone. Then the starter options, one of which was also chicken but as a confit, cauliflower soup and cod tempura. Also none of which were overly inspiring for us. Instead therefore we opted for pork belly off the main menu. When it arrived it was the smallest slab of pork belly, mine was slightly burnt on top. It was served with a tiny side portion of cabbage wrapped around more cabbage and bacon and a potato fondant, my partners of which was not cooked through, when informing the waitress she just said “it might be meant to be like that, but I dunno to be honest, I’ll tell the chef” we never heard anything else and there was no reduction on the bill. For £28 a plate, we felt robbed, to put into perspective after leaving Angel we walked around Bury for a little bit and saw that Pea & Porridge which is a Michelin star restaurant charge less for some of their main courses £27 - £29. Opposite the’ at Old Cannon Brewery they offer a Roast Pork Belly with dauphinoise and cabbage for £17.95! After seeing these prices and for what we got at Angel, we felt robbed. We each only had one drink each also, and in total the bill was over £80. There was a discretionary service charge added totalling nearly £10, which we had removed and the bill for two drinks and two pork dishes came to £73. It was not worth it, we were still hungry, but rather than pay another £8.50 each for a desert we went to McDonalds and each got a burger and fries which was more filling than what we’d been provided at Angel. This visit taught us a lesson. Whilst in the past this was a lovely place to visit, the pricing is far too high for the portions received. I believe because it’s a hotel they’re hoping their guests will eat with them rather than explore the cheaper, much better options nearby. Now as locals, rather than return again, we will be going elsewhere. Unfortunately after years of many repeat visits, this was our last.

Lovely food, beautifully presented. Waiting staff pleasant but way too busy to be attentive- probably because the tables were so rammed in and far too close to each other, and especially to the kitchen door. Staff not assigned specific tables do nobody had an overview of what stage we were at and whether we had ordered yet etc. Decor beautifully done and in keeping with the history of the building but acoustics DREADFUL- very noisy!

We came for our daughter’s birthday and stated this on booking form as it asks if celebrating any special occasions we were told by reception that there would be a plate of sweet treats for birthday guest. Everyone’s drinks were brought to table except mine i waited and in the end asked where it was then after the afternoon tea as we hadn’t seen the lady that served us for a while my husband asked another lady away from our table if the birthday plate could be brought out. she knew nothing about it and went off then came back and in front my daughter at the table said “all it is is a plate with a brownie on and happy birthday written, do you still want it?” I was so disappointed in what she said, how she said it and that it was infront of my daughter which ruined any gesture that would have been made so i said no and we left. Definitely not value for money or good service What was meant to be a special occasion disappointed. We have definitely had much better afternoon teas as well, not worth the money it cost.

I was in my own with no reservation but the super kind and efficient staff found me a table in the lounge, both restaurant & bar were fully booked. Amazing surroundings and this hotel is really warm cozy and Christmassy. I sat by the fire. Amazing customer service from Emma: she was very knowledgeable and quick service as well: my 3 courses meal was served in under 1 hour, amazing considering the place was packed with people. The food was TO DIE FOR, I got the scallops & chicken as a starter, the beef steak as main and sticky toffee pudding as dessert. All the food was cooked to perfection and presented in a fantastic way, really FINE DINING. Great selection of wines as well, I opted for 2 large glasses of the Portuguese DUERO ( 10.80£ each ) The bill came to 100.70£, absolutely fair considering the beautiful posh Hotel & location, amazing service, top top quality food and 2 glasses of wine. Had a very pleasant , simple lunch here on Thursday. Parked the car and just walked in. Very good , in fact, excellent service ! We both had the Pickwick Pie with vegetables,a fair portion of meat, good pastry , hot with an extra little jug of gravy . My feeling was that it was what we wanted , slightly overpriced, but that was ok, because the atmosphere was good. My only niggle ..get rid of the 12% service charge..10%is always plenty and really we should only give what we want to give …not feel obliged to pay…….a lot extra !

Never had a bad experience here. On my fourth time visiting we opted for the £35 3 course meal. I have a gluten allergy (coeliac) and the waitress confidently told me which of the items I could have. Both my partner and I ordered chicken liver pate for start, which was delicious. I could have eaten it twice! Mine was served with gluten free toast and when served the waitress clearly indicated it was gluten free - fab! For mains I’d opted for the pork belly, unfortunately it was sold out so they asked if I was happy for it to be swapped for a pork chop, which I was. It was delicious. Cleaned my plate. Very happy. My partner had a cod dish on a bed of risotto and also cleaned the plate. For desert my partner had the panna cotta and was very happy and amazingly I was offered a gluten free sticky toffee pudding, which wasn’t on the menu but is my absolute fav and I’d go here just for it! I loved every mouthful and the ice cream it comes with is delicious as well. As I was driving the drink I chose was a watermelon cooler. This was the only let down for me. It was extremely bitter and not to my taste at all. My partner was happy with his Bellini. Overall. Superb service, as always. Superb food, as always. I’m always shocked that this venue doesn’t have much higher reviews as one of the best places to eat in Bury St Edmunds imo. Cannot wait to visit again!

We had Sunday lunch - and like the "curate's egg" it was "good in parts". I had an excellent starter - pork belly with black pudding bonbon, and my husband's chilled gazpacho was fine. The main courses, however, weren't quite as good. Husband had some lovely tasty and tender beef - but my wild mushroom roulade was quite disappointing. The filling was nice enough but it was encased in rather uninspiring pastry like a Greggs pie. To me, roulade is made with beaten egg, rather than pastry and is light and fluffy. There were plenty of carrots and parsnips - but cooked rather unimaginatively - apart from the shredded cabbage which was good - as was the cauliflower cheese which cost extra and was served as a side. Altogether there were too many carbs - I noticed on the next table, someone had the fish in batter - which was not only enormous but served with chips as well as a large Yorkshire pudding! I found my own Yorkshire pudding inedible - hard and dry. I did have a lovely glass of wine though - a glass of Austrian Sauvignon from the "Special Pours" and the service was fine - friendly and prompt.

I concur with other reviewers .. with the addition of snotty service and no lunchtime menu meaning it’s main menu like £18 for a stater and £35 main course. Last time I was here for the LUNCH MENU the place was packed and yet today, Friday, it’s virtually empty. Food was total rubbish. The fish was smelly and this is a prime example on how to destroy a business without really trying. Being local I can say your current reputation is exactly where it should be. Absolutely stunning interior, nice atmosphere, could be excellent, but... We waited in a bar to get seated at our table for ages, but that's all OK, as its very busy. After we got seated our orders were taken soon enough. We were really hungry so I have ordered some bread and nibbles to keep us going before the starter. It took over 30 minutes for the bread to arrive...this is not really acceptable, because the whole point of ordering bread and nibbles is that we get it quickly. Not a great start. The starters came about an hour after ordering food. The bread was lovely, my scallops for starter were good, but my husband's pork belly tough and dry. I have ordered monk fish for the main with potatoes, fish was overcooked and tough, and potatoes were undercooked. My husband's steak was nice enough. So in general, a dissapointed. Will not eat there again unfortunately, which is a shame, as it looks beautiful and has lovely atmosphere. We did eat there in winter and food was way better, went downhill from there unfortunately.

Well, I have to say that was one of the most disappointing birthday meals I’ve ever had. Terrible service, only one waiter and waitress for the whole room that was packed. Our drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and the service during the whole meal was very slow. Regarding the food, I had to say that is overpriced. £19 for a scallops/langostine starter: the dish was poor, the langostine was NOT fresh (or cooked a long time ago), it was soggy on the outside and no meat inside. It was like touching a rotten langostine, and three tiny scallops. Definitely not worth £19. The tempura was hard and difficult to chew and the prawn with garlic mayo were overdone and no garlic mayo, just Mayo. The main courses were the best of the whole meal. The chicken was acceptable but the breast, too dry and the lamb was cook well but not worth £38. Overall, is totally overpriced for the quality of the food served and the service. They also charge discretionary 12.5% for the service that we asked to take it off the bill. So, two nibbles, two starters, two main course and two drinks (coke and aider) nearly £130. Judge yourself but I could have had a pretty amazing meal in many good places in London for that price. Not coming back ever again and that’s a shame because we are local and go to Bury st edmunds very often with friends and family.

Sunday lunch to celebrate my sister’s birthday. To say the Greene King beer was the best part of my meal sadly sums it up! Roast lamb with usual accompaniments. Well the lamb looked quite good and pink but it was little bits, not a proper carving and much was gristle. The cauliflower side at £4 was just three small springs; it was put down on a plate which was scalding hot - surely they should either have warned us or put the ramekin on a cold plate? “Roast” potatoes with no roast outer layer. The Yorkshires were dire. We watched vast amounts heading back as waste; they looked huge but had no texture other than dry and tasteless. The affogato dessert disappointed too. Problem was boules of ice cream that needed to be much colder so it could withstand the warm coffee better and not form a “soup” so quickly. The biscotti element was rock hard - dentists delight. My sister was not one to hold back, even as my guest, and rightly picked them up on most of these points. Very disappointing and poor value.

We've been here before and had cocktails in the cellar which at that time was brilliant but they've since refurbished the place and closed the cellar cocktail bar and moved it upstairs. It used to have the dining area as you enter the front doors. What used to have the appearance of elegance and history, now looks like a modernised pub like every other pub. The Dark and Stormy cocktail was awful. No ginger ale in it, no sweetness. It was quite bitter and flat. The Staff were friendly and welcoming.

The Angel Hotel Eaterie just gets better and better! Today, my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary by having lunch there. We chose the right restaurant. The Angel shares Angel Hill with several other lovely buildings, so simply arriving is something of a pleasure. It was a particular pleasure to have a table by a window with a view of the old abbey gateway. Although it was only a Tuesday lunchtime The Eaterie dining room was full. Every table occupied by happy customers. I have known The Angel for about forty years, and it has changed a lot, but it has always had a good reputation amongst locals like me. I have never frequented the restaurant more than two or three times a year, not because it I have had reservations about it, but because it is a little expensive. (At £60 a head, including tip etc.) The various plates my wife and I tried were all excellent. It was an interesting menu selection as well. I had scallops followed by a venison burger and then an interesting apple based dessert. Which included, by the way, a wonderful custard based pannacotta. Throughout our two hour meal, the staff were both efficient and friendly. I am seventy four and have eaten quite a few restaurant meals since I was old enough to hold a knife and fork. Today's meal was up there with the best and worth the money.

Disappointing - not the Angel of old. Far too loud and disappointing service. Food was ok, albeit hugely over priced for the quality - £15 for a very small scallop starter and £11 for an average gravalaux, but £28 for a very average steak, which...

Disappointingly small menu and not much choice. If only the food was as good as the customer service and decor, this would be a perfect hit as it is in perfect view of the Abbey Gardens and car park.

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending
