Visited 1st December 2024 for our Christmas Sunday lunch, 3rd time we have visited. Unfortunately this year we was very disappointed!! (6 of us) Beef was tough, we had to use steak knives but still couldn't cut through, burnt yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. Vegetables and gravy were fine. Unfortunately the meal wasn't hot enough, plates not warm either. Not sure if a new chef? We had a drink in the wine bar opposite then no word of a lie got some chips and hate chips butties back at our accommodation. Service was excellent (a young man, sorry didn't get his name but did his very best). Also with it been Christmas they was no decorations upstairs so no real ambience, also couldn't hear the music being played in the background. Don't think we will be back next year which is sad really because we have enjoyed the meal previous years.

The White Horse and Griffin is a lovely old place, built in 1681 it has that special charm about it. Also carrying amazing history. We stayed for one night and the room was cozy. We had dinner and breakfast here and the food was outstanding. The service by all 3 waitresses was excellent and very friendly and attentive.

I recently dined at the White Horse and Griffin, and it was a complete disappointment. My sister-in-law, who dined with me, got her meal at half price after she raised a complaint, but when I did the same, the manager flat-out refused to discount mine. The excuse? Because I had eaten my meal, it was “too late to complain.” This is absolutely ridiculous — as a customer, I should still be able to express dissatisfaction, especially when the meal was so underwhelming. For £24, I was served a chicken leg, half a tomato, and a small potato. What a joke! The portion was tiny, the food was average, and the lack of customer service was downright frustrating. I won’t be returning, and I highly advise others to avoid this place unless you want to be treated unfairly.

Having walked past this hotel for years (whilst caravanning in Whitby) this is the first time we have stayed here and we will definitely book again. We stayed in the Helga Maria room on the top floor. Thinking it would be a pokey attic room at the top we were surprised that the room was large with a king size bed, wardrobe, tv, drawers, ensuite bathroom and tea/coffee facilities. The bed, quilt and pillows were very comfortable and the room was warm and cozy. It was clean and had everything we needed. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a full English breakfast, tea and toast. Beautifully cooked and piping hot. Although it was busy we did not feel rushed and were able to take in the atmosphere of the lovely dining room. Next time we are staying longer!

Stayed 2 nights for our anniversary weekend. Found staff friendly and helpful. Room was adequate, old quirky and had a strange smell of damp initially, but it's an old building and no obvious leaks, although probably from a previous issue as wall paper loose on ceiling. One bedside lamp was broken, which I did tell them about, and they appeared to already know about it!!! The room was on the ist floor called the provider. It had everything we needed, although a shelf in the bathroom would be helpful for toiletries, and shower shelf as I don't like putting shower gel etc on the floor. Bedding was of good quality and a good firm mattress. Breakfast was lovely. We didn't eat there any other time, as read previous reviews and this and the price put us off. Plenty of great places to eat in whitby within a short walk. Didn't experience any ghosts, but could here music, conversation and foot steps from the room above, but it's an old creaky building, so no complaints here.

The food is extremely disappointing. I had the cheeks which were bland & they seemed to be deep fried!!! The sauce that was served with it was flavourless-coloured water). When my main arrived I sent it back as there was very little fish in my bouillabaisse. They cooked me a fresh one but by that time my wife was sat waiting for me. Not cheap either. The food was very underwhelming whilst the price was way over what it’s worth. They got 2 star as the serving staff were very pleasant & apologetic. There are so many good restaurants in Whitby, I will give this a miss from now on. Very disappointing.

Popped in for a drink on Monday evening. It wasn't overly busy. We sat in the bar area and asked if we could order the bread and alioli off the bar snacks menu. The bar staff informed us that the kitchen was "too busy" and were not doing snacks. If this is the case, the little boards advertising the snacks should be removed off the tables. Also, I'm mystified as to why this needed to be a kitchen job, surely a member of FOH could've chopped some bread? We would've left if we didn't have drinks. This is the 2nd time I've been here, but I won't return. There are numerous better, more accommodating pubs in Whitby.

Beautiful historical period pub person serving in bar and acting as host for bookings very miserable and unwelcoming not suitable for hospitality industry, welcome and first impressions count for a lot and staff desperately need retraining so sad for what is a wonderful atmospheric bar and restaurant . Roast Silverside of beef was served with overcooked vegetables that had obviously been kept warm for a long period of time , wine glasses stained with water marks . Server in dining room was bright positive and polite but seemed nervous serving at the table not a good vibe and a very poor experience over all real shame . Can only think with the relentless number of guests over a busy summer period staff are tired .

Went for a family meal after looking at the reviews and had high hopes, all of which were met. The servers were all wonderful, especially our main waitress, Leah, who was exceptional. She was very friendly and helpful, and put us all at ease (and honestly deserves the world). She gained high praises from all of us. The food was also phenomenal. Had a great sharing portion of camembert as a starter with plenty of bread, which is a rare treat, and parents had mackerel and scallops, which they had high praises for. The lamb main was lovely and super tender, and the couscous salad on the side of it was really nice. The desserts were also really good, and were also good portion sizes. I really hope i have the chance to eat here again :)

Went here for Sunday roast lunch with my bf. Upon arrival at 12.30pm we were greeted by very rude staff, where she told us right away they need the table back at 2pm. I was a bit shocked but I guess it was a Sunday and I agreed to it. Waited for 30 minutes for our food to arrive,so it meant that we needed to finish the sunday roast and a bottle of wine within 1 hour. And when the food arrived, it was horrible. The beef was mushy and grey, Yorkshire pudding was burnt, the side vege was tastless and overcooked. Not only did we have to deal with this awful food, but we faced the challenge of finishing this within an hour. Honestly it was really stressful, I had to keep checking my watch while hurrying to finish our meal and drinks. When we just finished our meal, the waitress came and gave us our bill which we did not ask for. And then 10 minutes later another waitress came and warned us about the timing..and then awhile later the waitress came again to inform us that the guests for 2pm had already arrived and asked us to finish our drinks. Mind you it was only 10 minutes to 2pm and we were about to finish our drinks. I am really upset and dissappointed with the service here. It feels like we are not treated fairly and respected. We spent £60+ here, which is a lot of money for Whitby. Also there are other tables who arrived before us and were still eating and no one hurried them to leave. I can't help but feel they were being racist because I am Asian. And they do not value our business here. I feel extremely humilated to be treated this way. Avoid this place, it is not worth your money. There are many more other places that have friendly staff and do a better roast than coming here and wasting your money.

My partner and I regularly enjoy going out for Sunday lunch, but yesterday at the White Horse and Griffin we experienced the worst Sunday lunch we've ever had. We ordered a bottle of red wine and two beef roasts. We had to wait almost 40 minutes for our roasts - which was frustrating as we had been asked to give the table back at 2pm. Once we did finally receive our meals, the food was clearly well below an acceptable standard. The texture of the beef was mushy and horrible - by far the worst beef I have ever tasted. The Yorkshire puddings were burnt, and the vegetables were bland and tasteless. To add insult to injury, they have the cheek to charge £18 for this disgusting meal. In Yorkshire this should be considered a criminal offence - it really was that bad. I feel like we have been ripped off. At 1:40pm we still had half a bottle of wine to drink - but the waitress (who was apologetic) asked me to pay the bill now, as the guests who booked our table for 2pm had just arrived. While I was shocked, (as I hadn't finished my wine) I paid the bill there and then. However, I was still going to sit here and finish my wine, as I booked the table until 2pm. At 1:50pm the manager came to our table, and demanded that we leave the table because the guests who booked the table for 2pm were already here. I have never experienced such unbelievably rude service (especially in Yorkshire), and this left us with a really nasty experience. I still hadn't finished my wine, so I slowly drank my drink, and left the table at precisely 2pm. I'm not putting up with such rude nonsense - and I encourage anyone that experiences similar levels of rude service to stand your ground. Such rude service should not be tolerated. Overall this was a terrible experience, and definitely the worst Sunday lunch we've ever had. I recommend others to stay well away from this place, and go somewhere else in Whitby for Sunday lunch - where at least you can be guaranteed a more friendly service.

Visited 10 years ago for our 35th wedding anniversary. Oh how things have changed. The room was 'tired'. We had a txt to say be careful with hot water as they were having problems. So we didn't use any hot water on the evening. Next morning no, none, nada hot water. Shower was freezing. When I mentioned this to the duty manger, she snapped back I texted you and told you about the problems. I'm sorry but problems is not, no hot water, it's less hot water. The least you expect is one reasonable shower. If you haven't enough hot water, you should take less guests. No recompense was offered. Her manner was hostile. The breakfast itself was ok, but we were offered no cereal, no fruit, yogurts. Just here's the menu. The first cup of coffee was cold. The second couldnt be called coffee, as it was just hot water. We kept having to ask for things that should have been supplied, like enough milk a refill, sugar. Then when she cleared our plates, she asked us to wipe our knives. Ffs, no shower, clean your own cutlery. This was a present from us to our friends. I was embarrassed, as I was bigging it up. Really expensive as well. Will never stay there again. So disappointed.

The menu looked amazing sadly the food didn’t live up to expectations especially the prices for the quality of food. Although this evening when we visited for food the bar man was more welcoming than when we stopped for a drink yesterday when it was really cold and never saw the bar man after we got our drinks. The kitchen staff walked through the restaurant but never asked if we were ok etc. given the prices they’re charging and the poor food quality we would expect more. Would not recommend and definitely would not return.

Everywhere in Whitby that wasn’t a fish and chip restaurant was fully booked so we were delighted to find that here we could get a table with only a few hours notice. The staff were lovely, the dining room and bar were too, the food on the other hand …. not so much. To start, my wife had the pumpkin soup which she says was excellent. I had the crab macaroni cheese - it was dry, it literally had no cheese sauce, and it was tasteless - sorry, but true. We both had the hake for our main course. The fish was dry and tasteless and what the heck was going on with those potato dumplings, I’ve no idea. They too were dry and tasteless. The bill came to just over £100 (admittedly, I think it was £32 of that was for a nice bottle of wine). The food though, I’m sorry to say WHandG scored ‘nil points’ - very poor.

We called in for a quick lunch on a Saturday afternoon in Whitby. The dining area looked pleasant but the staff seemed a bit miserable. We ordered the crab sandwich, which wasn't on the menu but was on the blackboard outside with no price displayed. When the sandwich arrived it was about 90% lumps of brown crab meat/paste between two slices of brown bread. No salad, no mayonnaise and no seasoning. It came with a few chips and we asked the waiter for some mayonnaise. It wasn't inedible, as I was quite hungry, but it was bland and definitely needed the mayonnaise. My partner wasn't keen at all and barely ate any, apart from the chips which were ok. Afterwards we asked the waitress for the bill but she never returned so we went to the bar to pay. This took ages as the customer in front was trying to pay by card and they were having to enter the details manually which wasn't working. We offered to pay cash to speed things up and I was quite shocked when she said £20.80! That was for one poor quality crab sandwich and two glasses of lemonade. I didn't question it at the time because we just wanted to get out of there and enjoy the rest of our day. We wouldn't go back.

Had a meal here which was okay. Wife’s starter was burnt but mine was acceptable. Mains were pretty decent though in fairness. Then we came to pay. The card machine was broken and we were then told by the younger of the two staff on duty on the 2nd November that if we didn’t go to the cash machine and pay in the next 30 minutes that she would call the police! Incredible, If you own this establishment you need to look at who you employ and what training you give them. The waitress was clearly not suitable for this type of work and obviously quite stupid to say this to a customer. This type of nonsense is not acceptable under any circumstance.

Wonderful place to visit. Below average service in the restaurant for us today, but we have to say the food saved the day! Amazing Sunday toast!

Service was great, the wine list fabulous, however the vegetarian options especially the onion tart was poor and very expensive. Whole shallots in a pastry case with a tiny rocket salad was just not good enough.A disappointing meal for both my children.

The food was considerably better a few years ago when we last came. The homemade fish cakes were legendary. Now everything is straight out of the freezer, into the fryer. We had a few starters and they were all vile and inedible, the roast potatoes for example are not roasted, you can smell the freezer smell on them and they have clearly been deep fried. So many better local and delicious starter options could be offered (and cooked quickly).

We had a fabulous dinner at the Scarborough Arms on a busy Saturday evening (reservation essential). We skipped starters and had the salmon (a special for the night), BBQ ribs and sirloin steak. Throughout the evening, Derek and his team took great care of us. The food was superb, accompanied by good wines (Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec) & a draught Moretti. Thanks to everyone for making us so welcome whilst staying in the town. Highly recommended.
