A quick pit stop here after stopping from Peterborough on the "Whitby Flyer" steam train. Been here previously and really like the pub. Good atmosphere, friendly staff. Would recommend if you're visiting Whitby👍

The new renovations are gorgeous... Unfortunately I was a little disappointed with my meal. My first choice of meal was not available therefore chose the Sharer Nachos (for myself). My husband had the Steak & Venison pie which he said was lovely (and looked lovely). Unfortunately my Nachos were not as nice. They were very soggy and stodgy. Not liking to complain I didn't say anything but then wasn't given the chance to comment as nobody collected our plates before we left....Myself and my husband also commented on the toilets not being very clean with wet stains on the floor and no toilet roll.... Despite this, I would go back as the place itself is lovely and the staff very pleasant.

Nice enough place with friendly staff and a nice view across the harbour (although it was busy when I went so I didn't get a window seat!). We were looking for somewhere with vegan options on the menu, of which they have several. I had the pumpkin ravioli which was pretty bland, but I never expect much from vegan pub food to be honest :( It's great that they're making an effort to offer vegan food, but hopefully they'll put a little more effort into making it tastier!

Great pub fantastic flavourful food. Came in here whilst on holiday and service was friendly and fast. Food prices are great and the portion sizes are great value. Would recommend coming here for food and a drink. Great views out the windows too!

I am absolutely astounded by the fantastic reviews this place has. The rooms are tiny, the beds are so small that your feet hang off the end and are unbelievably uncomfortable, but worse than that the music in the pub was so loud even the tv on max volume couldn’t drown it out. This went on until after 11:30. I can’t understand how others don’t complain about it. I appreciate it’s a pub hotel but either there’s a major problem with soundproofing/insulation of the rooms, or the speakers are just turned up to a ridiculous volume. We could hear every word the singer was saying from our room. I don’t expect silence in a pub hotel but christ this was unbearable. The most unpleasant stay I’ve ever had in a hotel.

This is a decent pub grub place. We visited for drinks and for food on two separate occasions. Love the location and the windows onto the bay. Food was good pub grub. Less microwaved for the meat eaters than a lot of places. Would visit again

What a great place to stay. We got upgraded for free to a room with a sea view and it was fabulous. Everything clean and well cared for. The bathroom was very clean and fresh looking. Nice towels. Warm room as it was really cold outside. Coffee machine with pods was good because they had the instructions to go with it. Yummy biscuits on the tea tray. Good quality tea bags. Absolutely amazing view. Breakfast was superb. I had a vegetarian breakfast, lovely sausages, hash browns were crispy and not greasy at all, lovely large mushroom. My husband had poached eggs and sausage, the eggs were poached perfectly and he said his sausages were great. Cereals and toast. Juices, tea and coffee. Best breakfast I have had in a hotel for a long time. The staff were great too. We didn’t have lunch or dinner there but what they were serving looked great.

We looked forward to going to his lovely old pub after a long spell of avoiding it because it had become so run down. Recently refurbished and with lovely staff and great beer, it should have been a joy to look out over the misty harbour on a winter afternoon. Unfortunately, with several high up screens showing a previous day's football match, eye level screens all over with constantly moving advertising and music playing as well, the assault on the senses was overwhelming and we had to leave with barely a glance out of the window. It seems it is no longer possible to have a relaxed drink or food with just the gentle hum of conversation and a lovely view.

Starters were terrible. Over cooked, low in quality and missing main ingredients. Real ale was very good. But went in for food.

Food was poor to say the least and not as described, presentation was also poor. Visited on Sunday 2nd Feb, ordered a few starters for sharers as a light lunch, 2 of these were served without ingredients listed on the menu and the other 1 was overcooked and greasy (in dirty brown oil). Would not return for food.

We booked this at the last minute for a getaway out of season . It was really brilliant. Our room was clean and tidy, very warm the whole stay (January 2025). The view from our window was picturesque. We could see the whole of the harbour down to both lighthouses . We were advised by the lovely barstaff that they had a 40% off both food and drink during January, and we gave it a go. ...... The food was great . A good choice on the menu and our favourite dessert was the sticky toffee pudding. The staff were friendly and willing to talk to us soft southerners !! We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay B & B here . Hopefully, we will go back .....

Honestly one of our favourite pubs going in Whitby. We visit every year and the place is great. Lovely food and a good selection of drinks. They’ve recently opened up the lower part of the bar area which is outside and over looks the bay, perfect at summer time. Council needs to sort themselves out though (licensing won’t let you take the drink from outside to inside - typical council!) The guys here are amazing! Always have the football on as well. Dog friendly as well!

Stayed over for 1 night the room had everything we needed and was spotless with a lovely comfy bed we had our evening meal which was delicious as was breakfast the atmosphere was friendly with really nice staff and great service

Enjoyed our visit, cold day so welcome hot drink in pleasant surroundings. Not a lot of people in as out of season.

Very cosy evening spent here in January for my birthday. Really enjoyed the beef rib, melted right off the bone. Will be back when I return to Whitby!

Catching up on old visits, ate a lovely meal here, great food, great service, great view, great atmosphere.

Most of the the hand pulled beer was not available, ended up with something l really didn't want, but hey ho, we could have left. Atmosphere, not really happening.

Would expect fish to have been cooked better, was very dry, other great food on menu though. Great views over harbour, the bar staff lovely and a really good atmosphere.

No baby changing facilities had to change the baby on the toilet floor.

Good location with nice views. Vegetarian butternut squash ravioli and bang bang broccoli both horrible. Other options have Quorn so not fresh food. Electronic advertising boards in the pub ruined atmosphere.

Shocking Health & Hygiene firstly! The bar person serving me was biting the skin round his fingers and chewing it, then taking it out and rolling it in his hand, then continued to pick his nails.. then serve our drinks. I spoke to his Duty manager - who was no better, he continuously flicked his hair about - George Michael style, running his fingers through it to re- style it! The food arrived warm, steak sauces congealed and cold. We left without eating. No apology or offer of a coffee - cake or kind gesture. We got a partial refund. The money was not the issue in any way, however it does need mentioning to any potential customers. The staff couldn’t have cared less. Very disappointed- this is our local go to pub! We were very polite. Not rude, or arrogant. We just do not think the food or service was acceptable. Not our usual experience here.

How do these places stay in business?? I'll have Belly pork i said, ohhh we don't have any today he said..are you joking I said ...ill check he said...oh yes we do have it...5 mins later, ohhh we haven't any mash to go with your belly pork and mash...ffs...can we order a cocktail?, Raspberry French for my wife...or I'll get my book out to see how to make that.. having waited for geniues to make it, he says...OH BTW, we don't have any raspberries, so you'll just have to have it like that!! If it wasn't for countless gullible tourists throwing themselves at the feet of these people, surely they'd go bust.

Have been going to duke of York for years in very busy time went to night only about 6 or 7 people in the pub but have never waited so long for food husband ordered a pudding same time as meal put had to ask twice after we had our meal a good 20 to 30 minutes after we had our meal can understand when it is busy but not when only a few people in the meals was good

Wonderful hotel Andrew the the manger and his staff Julie and Tracy and Ryan were so welcoming the rooms…. are amazing and they are so helpful with using the companies app and helping us find our way around …. Cannot wait to visit again soon

Fish and chips were terrible I didn't complain because we were in company and they paid.A real shame as it is a nice traditional pub with great views of the harbour and friendly staff.

The food was considerably better a few years ago when we last came. The homemade fish cakes were legendary. Now everything is straight out of the freezer, into the fryer. We had a few starters and they were all vile and inedible, the roast potatoes for example are not roasted, you can smell the freezer smell on them and they have clearly been deep fried. So many better local and delicious starter options could be offered (and cooked quickly).

£6.15 for a beer was the only issue here, other than that all round nice place X

Myself and hubby stayed here for one night with friends on a bed and breakfast basis. Staff were pleasant and breakfast was nice. The room we stayed in (number 8) was lovely, being a good size with a super view and located on the first floor at the end of the corridor. At the end of our evening out we had a drink in the bar. Last orders were at 11.00 and we headed to bed very shortly afterwards. However, we were kept awake by what we were later told was the kitchen extractor fan making it's noise and also staff coming down the corridor to a staff room opposite ours and banging doors. This all subsided by about 12.30am. We were woken at 7.30 by a chap outside our room on a phone call. This was followed by lots of talking by more men and banging noises. We couldn't go back to sleep with the commotion. When we left our room to go for breakfast the staff room opposite had several workmen in it. There were tools and bags outside our door which we had to manoeuvre around. The workmen looked rather surprised to see us come out the bedroom like they weren't expecting any guests in residence. After breakfast we went to pack ready for checking out, again negotiating the tools and equipment. There was banging and drilling at this point..non of which could be heard downstairs in the pub/dining area. When we finally left to check out we found a painter up a ladder blocking the corridor! He had to move so we could get past. Our friends were totally aghast at the work going on and all the tools and hazards we had to avoid to get out. We were really unhappy that all this had spoiled our weekend stay. We were given no notice about the very clearly planned work that was going to take place. The manager (i'm assuming that he was the boss, he was in charge) said he did not know they were going to start so early. Well, i'm sorry, someone let them in and told them where to go and and had booked the work in. It would be prudent to arrange these jobs at a decent time of the morning so as not to disturb the guests that pay good money for their accommodation in your establishment. We came for a nice little break to relax and didn't expect to be woken up so early by contractors. I understand that maintenance has to be carried out but this should be at the consideration of your guests. We felt that we were completely unimportant and totally disrespected. We expressed our disappointment and explained how unsatisfactory our stay had been due to the disruption. We have been offered a 15% discount on a future stay.

We ordered a variety of food. A lot of it was decent, but some of it was poor quality. Our table had bread and oil to share, among other sides. The bread was lovely but the oil was not olive oil but an olive oil blend which is suitable for cooking but not for serving to dip bread in. Frankly that level of penny pinching on a nearly £5 nibble order is unacceptable. Yes the price of olive oil has sky rocketed, but you cannot serve this kind of oil as a dip for bread. No point complaining because the fact that they send it out in the first place tells you that they don't care about the customer experience. It wasn't a mistake, it's their standard practice. Although the other food was acceptable this indicates that this bar will happily cut costs on quality to line their pockets. It's not acceptable at all to serve cooking oil to dip bread in. The staff were great and the drinks options were decent. There's a great view of the sea, and they have sports on TV. A lot of potential let down by cutting costs on food quality. I would not return for this reason alone. If you're not bothered about stuff like that you will have a great experience.

The food was nice enough (my husband is very fussy & he really enjoyed his meal) BUT you really need to sort your menu out. Marshmallows aren't vegetarian so shouldn't have been but down as a vegetarian option. The cheesecake that contained egg & milk also should not have been marked as vegan! Wouldn't go back as couldn't trust what we were actually being served.

Had lunch here , from the outside it looked nothing but surprised how nice it was inside and dog friendly. Had lunch which was delicious although the fish finger ciabatta was a little on the hard crunchy side but apart from that really enjoyed it

Lovely pub great views nice staff breakfast was very nice the room was gorgeous. Lots of heavy footsteps from upstairs room is the only reason it's not 5 stars

Absolutely brilliant little pub. Stopped in today for lunch whilst visiting Whitby. Staff were polite and the service was great. We found a little booth which suited us perfectly. Picked from the lunch menu. Food came out in more the reasonable time. Everything was lovely. Wide selection of drinks available. Not just local ale or nothing! Nice and warm and cozy. Perfect for a winter stop. Great views of the harbour. I would strongly recommend. Just one to note there are no baby change facilities but there is a little hotel attached upstairs and the team were more than happy for us to use the hallway which was absolutely fine. Great team Great setting Great little pub. Well worth a stop off.

Ate here 2 nights in a row, 30 & 31st Oct, food was consist over both nights. Atmosphere here was great. Reasonable price.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who followed the gents toilet sign and ended up outside looking confused and pained. Staff seemed a little grumpy when we called in, except for a young chap (possibly Polish) who was very helpful and courteous to the guests checking in. I've never seen one person carry as many bags since sherpa Tenzing helped Sir Edmond Hillary up mount Everest.

We were looking for an alternative to great seafood we had during our first 2 nights in Whitby. I made a mistake of not reading reviews so hopefully if you read thus it will save you a wasted trip to thus establishment. It looks OK, but tables were dirty , understaffed , the wine was not great at that point in reflection we should gave left. I ordered the beef on bone with soft mash and cabbage my partner ordered the gammon. I sent my food straight back the mash was cold lumpy and so dry , I was told it was the last mash they had, with 2 hours of service still to go why was it on the menu and why the hell did they serve that crap . My partners gammon was nice but our evening ruined and not a real apology or attempt to right their wrong. Thus pub had a good reputation but clearly has been swallowed by the corporate chain mentality , I had r more great nights in Whitby eating real passionately prepared food from local people.

We sat at a table myself,my wife and our son who has severe autism. We ordered from the online app and we waited ,we waited,we waited and waited. Until my wife had to go and tell them at the bar that we had been waiting,only to be told that when ordering online it didn't PING at the till. So they bought us our lattes . And we waited for our son's coke and crisps,and waited ,waited and waited. Until my wife had to yet again go to the bar and reminded that we paid online so it's easier for us seeing that our son is severely disabled. So we waited. Until finally our son's coke cola and crisps arrived.. oh then they gave us two biscof biscuits (nice touch) . Let me just say your system of ordering from the website,using your barcode is broken and seriously needs looking at again. Thankyou regards Ashley

Stayed for 1 night for my 50th birthday. Absolutely loved it. The Duke of York is very welcoming, great friendly staff, doggy friendly and lovely clean rooms. There was an amazingly good choice for breakfast and we will certainly be staying again. Thank you to everyone who made our short stay so nice.

We were in Whitby with some friends and as we walked down from the Abbey, we saw this place for a drink. The security guard on the door was extremely pleasant and pointed us down to the outdoor bar as we had dogs worth us. We did find it strange for a security guard on a Friday lunchtime, but hey ho. The area at the bottom is lovely for drinks and people watching.

Very disappointed as went here for a meal. Ordered drinks which were served and then informed the kitchen was closed! Surely you would tell customers that food was not available as they arrived. Guy behind bar not bothered Not impressed as previously had exemplary service for both bar and food Please train staff to be more attentive

The beer was good and the service ok, but the food was not as good as it used to be. Lamb shank was tasty but the buttery chive mash, roasted veg and tender stem broccoli was a disappointment. There was no sign of chives in the mash and I doubt it had ever seen any butter, very dry. The roasted veg was just a few carrots and no sign of the broccoli. A measly amount of gravy didn't improve things. Could do better. It is a shame as this used to be the best pub for a meal in the whole town.

Come every year and again not disappointed.

We went out for a cigarette and were told we couldn’t take our drinks outside- fair enough- then came back inside after 5mins and our drinks were gone. We had half of our drinks left. Walked out. One of the members of staff who served us weren’t particularly friendly either.

A nice comfortable pub which is furnished well with excellent views of the Harbour. A great selection of drinks and a good menu.

A good Riverside pub. Well worth a visit. Before ordering ask about the outside seating area as you can't take drinks onto the street to access this area.

Me and my wife spent our honeymoon here in September. We stayed 3 nights in a room overlooking the harbour. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The breakfast was delicious and the room was perfect with a huge bath tub and great views. Thank you to the Duke of York staff. Will definitely be back.

The place itself is in a beautiful location, with large windows overlooking the harbour. Such a vibe! The food I ordered (truffle fries and mushroom wellington) was pretty good, too, but I was a little confused about the service. I was told to pick a table and that someone would come around to take my order, so I sat at the one right next to the bar, but I waited 40 mins and no one ever came to take my order. The waiters/waitresses were all chilling behind the bar so I thought, well, maybe I misunderstood. I got up and asked if I could order my food, it came 35 mins later, and my very obviously sticky/wet table was never cleaned, so the whole thing felt a little uncomfortable - like I didn't feel exactly welcome there... :')

Lovely views over the harbour, a couple of choices of hand pull beers and many lagers. Only had drinks.

We stayed here in July for 4 nights and I can honestly say it was the worst sleep we’ve ever had in a hotel/when staying away from home. The rooms are decorated nicely and that initially enticed us into making a booking. However, the noise throughout the night and early hours of the morning totally ruined the stay. It is a pub and is not fit for purpose as a place to sleep. The noise from the bar travels easily through the walls/ceiling. There is a staff room upstairs on the same level as the guest rooms. The staff seem to have no awareness of how noisy they are being when they are charging along the corridor until the early hours of the morning after closing for the night and the fire doors banging etc. We were woken up around 5am each day to the chairs and tables downstairs being moved by the cleaners, hoovering and there was a cleaners store cupboard directly next to our room that was so noisy that they sounded as if they were in the corner of our room. The bin lorries and deliveries of beer barrels in the early hours also add to the disturbance of sleep. We cannot comment on the pub food as didn’t eat there, just had breakfast. When we checked out, I told the member of staff about our awful experience and there was no compensation offered. I just hope you find somewhere else to stay!

Fab cosy hotel / bar serving good range of cask and keg beers & ciders etc. Great food menu available. Grab a table & watch the boats come in and out of Historic Whitby harbour.

Not my favourite type of beer in here but still a great place to visit, a must do if your doing a bar crawl

Not the greatest. Bar staff that served us was either in a mood or had had enough and it definitely showed with the attitude. We was a family and had the kids pushed aside so another group could grab a table! Staff saw but did nothing. We left halfway through our drinks and don't think we will be returning.

Ordered cheesy nachos as a starter and waited over an hour for them to arrive. The managers attitude was 'well, your a tourist, I'm never going to see you again so I don't care'. This was not the first time we've eaten there but it will be the last.

I’ll make it a simple review, you wait half an hour for your food and when it turns up, one meal has clearly been heated in the microwave and the second meal the plate is hotter then the food and you then wait 5 mins for it to be re-done makes you wonder. Definitely not be going back

Sat outside on the terrace with a fab view of the harbour. Great atmosphere, good beer and friendly bar staff, a shout out for Julie,she was a little star., made our visit to Whitby,we will definitely return to the duke of York.

We had booked the Duke of York for dinner and were given a nice table overlooking the harbour. The food is ordered at the bar. We both had gammon steak which was tasty but the presentation let it down. It looked as if everything had been thrown on the plate! Also we had a very long wait. We were going to have dessert but gave up due to the long wait. On the plus side, the area outside where they serve drinks is a very pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon watching all the goings on in the harbour

What’s happened to this place? Please don’t take into account old reviews and photographs from 2 years ago. This place isn’t the same anymore. We used to love it here years ago and the homemade food… appears to be a bad chain restaurant now?? Breakfast was poor. Service was poor. (Wow rude, I’d understand if I’d been rude initially but I was very friendly and polite. Was spoken over while trying to lace my order with blunt questions “allergies?”.) Streaky bacon, eww. The worst quality sausages known to man. The eggs and toast are the only reason this scored a 2. It’s absolutely roasting hot in the restaurant (even at 9am.. they have air con ! ) no where else was this hot in Whitby. Shame this place has been ruined.

Had a drink in here before climbing the 199 steps to the Abby. Tables were clean. Seats were available. Got a table in the window with a lovely view over the harbour

Arrived at time of booking ,table taken by others ,was offered a dirty table at the bar refused it but had a drink and waited for table . wasn't,too long though.Ordered fish and chips .Fish was poor, batter was hard .We were not alone table next to us had the same meal with the solid batter .Would not recommend.

booked a table online ordered 2 meals then waited 45 mins one meal turned which was a steak which was tougher than climbing the 199 steps to the Abbey after enquiring about the 2nd meal it hadn't even been ordered so waited another 45 minutes received no apology not good service
