We had booked the Duke of York for dinner and were given a nice table overlooking the harbour. The food is ordered at the bar. We both had gammon steak which was tasty but the presentation let it down. It looked as if everything had been thrown on the plate! Also we had a very long wait. We were going to have dessert but gave up due to the long wait. On the plus side, the area outside where they serve drinks is a very pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon watching all the goings on in the harbour

Sat outside on the terrace with a fab view of the harbour. Great atmosphere, good beer and friendly bar staff, a shout out for Julie,she was a little star., made our visit to Whitby,we will definitely return to the duke of York.

What’s happened to this place? Please don’t take into account old reviews and photographs from 2 years ago. This place isn’t the same anymore. We used to love it here years ago and the homemade food… appears to be a bad chain restaurant now?? Breakfast was poor. Service was poor. (Wow rude, I’d understand if I’d been rude initially but I was very friendly and polite. Was spoken over while trying to lace my order with blunt questions “allergies?”.) Streaky bacon, eww. The worst quality sausages known to man. The eggs and toast are the only reason this scored a 2. It’s absolutely roasting hot in the restaurant (even at 9am.. they have air con ! ) no where else was this hot in Whitby. Shame this place has been ruined.

Arrived at time of booking ,table taken by others ,was offered a dirty table at the bar refused it but had a drink and waited for table . wasn't,too long though.Ordered fish and chips .Fish was poor, batter was hard .We were not alone table next to us had the same meal with the solid batter .Would not recommend.

Had a drink in here before climbing the 199 steps to the Abby. Tables were clean. Seats were available. Got a table in the window with a lovely view over the harbour

booked a table online ordered 2 meals then waited 45 mins one meal turned which was a steak which was tougher than climbing the 199 steps to the Abbey after enquiring about the 2nd meal it hadn't even been ordered so waited another 45 minutes received no apology not good service

Asked if the fish was haddock and barman kindly checked with the kitchen. Ordered fish & chips and 2 of the fish goujons... Fish tasted more liked Pollock and the goujons were served covered in thick batter that was better trimmed so fish could be tasted.

A two night stay in what I can only describe as the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed at ! Most of the rooms are above the bar area and the noise from the bar along with deliveries and random banging about of barrels is beyond a joke. Don’t expect to sleep until the bar closes at midnight. It seemed like there was no consideration for guests staying, especially at 7am when it seemed they were rearranging the cellar. The rooms are clean and well decorated, although, we thought small and overpriced. Room 5, where we had the displeasure of staying has a entry/exit door right outside directly behind the headboard of the bed, everytime people use the door is bangs shut thus making it impossible to sleep through this. Breakfast was average at best, when they got the order correct. We ordered food which we had sent to the room which was burnt and most of it inedible. On the plus side the location is nice, the views over the harbour are fab. Overall, a very disappointed stay at he Duke, we love Whitby so hasn’t completely ruined our stay but We definitely won’t be returning to this hotel and certainly wouldn’t recommend a stay here to friends. We are off home for a sleep !

A typical famiky style pub at the bottom of the steps leading up to the Abbey. A modern interior with a nortical theme. Great views across the water. The place was packed when we called around 4pm on a Thursday so finding an empty seat was difficult, alot of tables were pre booked so we only had time for a quick drink before we had to vacate the table. There were lots of families with young children at this time. Obviously, we didn't eat there as it was full. I definitely recommend booking prior if you intend to eat. There was a sign to a beer garden which must look over the water, but I couldn't see it from inside the pub. So unfortunately cannot comment.

I have been coming to Whitby for 30 odd years. I have always recommended the Duke of York, my only complaint in the past is i haven't been able to get a table. I saw a new area for outside drinks had been opened and wondered how that would work if you were staying in rooms 1 and 2 (which i have in the past) First thing i noticed was all the flowers have been stripped away from the doorway, just one hanging basket left which makes it much less inviting and frankly doesn't hide the smoking seat. We were surprised it wasn't that busy and we got a window seat.... Things have definitely changed and not for the better - the screens flash up use the app, we couldn't get it to work so ordered at the bar. The young man that took our order couldn't explain the difference between garden peas, mushy peas and minted peas.... the minted peas are sort of creamy mushy peas but not mushy peas - we went garden peas. So two orders of fish, chips and garden peas. Didnt wait too long but very disappointed. The fish was much smaller than previous, the batter was oily and tasted like old over used and burnt oil had been used. The fish was also very thin and underwhelming. We were very disappointed - when the young lady came to clear the table and asked how our meal was we said it wasn't good, you cant say we didnt tell you at the time. She apologised and explained they had been taken over and no longer a family run place... It shows! We wont be back and having only had one drink we left... talking to other locals they confirmed the place isnt a patch on what it was and it's such a shame - we wont be back....

Four of us popped in for a quick drink (2 couples ) I ordered two pints of hells lager and two large glasses of wine and got charged over £35.00 !!! Ridiculous pricing ...... do yourself a favour and go elsewhere to save around £15.00 a round.

What can I say, to our surprise the service drinks and food were excellent would thoroughly recommend, the only down side, yest again no smiles or warm welcome from the staff. Strike two Whitby :(

It was a short stop for a quick toilet break and a drink on a hot day, but the gent in the bar serving seemed to have an attitude like he didnt want people coming in so not very welcoming 😑

Food nice, fairly unimaginative. Chips or salad with burgers. Pub looked nice indoors, but was really hot inside. Had huge windows looking over the sea ( lovely) but they didn't seem to open, so with the sun coming in, we had to go and sit in a dark corner.

Stayed in the same hotel for a week in January so good we are going back in September first class service and the staff are great and the food is amazing and the manager goes out of is way too make sure that you have everything you need.👍👍

I am absolutely livid,We ordered 2 bowls of chips and 3 sandwiches and we waited 2 hours,The bread had mold on it,I would rather watch paint dry on a bloody castle then wait here again. Don't recommend

The new outdoor bit near the beach is great although the little serving hatch that services it isn't. Not a massive variety of drink on offer and only one person serving so you can expect a wait if busy.

Wasn't their long enough, but what I saw definitely needs tidying up !!!!

came in just before half 1, ordered our food through the app at 1.26. sausage and mash, nachos, dauphinoise potatoes, bowl of chips and two drinks came to just short of £40- for the amount of food we ordered it’s not too bad for the price. we waited over 45 minutes for our food to come out, the sausages were overcooked, mash cold, nachos cold. then our sides came, the chips were overdone and the inside of my potatoes were flat cold, the cream inside felt as though it had come straight of the fridge. i didn’t want to make a fuss as it was just a bunch of teenagers and young people working and i understand how it feels to have to apologise for a mistake the kitchen have made, but i told a young lady with brown and blonde hair i think? about my potatoes (who immediately apologised and got me a new bowl and was one of the only good parts of this whole experience) i thought at first that the price was good value, but upon receiving the food i feel like ive been ripped off. a menu trying to pass as “posh” would succeed with a plate of sausage mash and pees much more than it is with this menu that the kitchen is clearly incapable of handling. my potatoes were flavourless, a bowl of mush with a bit of hot cheese on top. i tried so hard to eat them but i couldn’t, i just left them. such a shame, the pub has a beautiful view out of the windows and clearly enough money to make it into something good, but if the food that you’re serving continues to be of this quality i cannot imagine that you will continue to make any money.

Nice little place over looking the harbour, the food was delicious & service was very good. Worth a visit.

A very long wait for food, after an hour I asked and the food was then out 10 minutes later, one dish burnt and another undercooked. The starter had 2 mushrooms on it despite it being a mushroom based starter. On complaining I was greeted with indifference and they partly refunded our meal. A total let down, things need to improve. The toilets need an upgrade and we're not as clean as they could be.

Definitely not a restaurant we will be visiting again. It took them an hour too deliver two dishes which was pasta and a salad. The falafel was burnt on the salad and the pasta was slightly undercooked. Please consider going to other restaurants before even glancing an eye at this one.

Nice pub overlooking Whitby harbour, was rather busy at times and struggled for a seat but returned a bit later and got a seat. The view over the estuary was lovely, it's dog friendly which is always a bonus for us. We didn't eat here but the food did look good.

What a let down wow !! Been coming to this pub since the 1980’s but not any more. Not been for a few years and it has changed hands. Now run by a chain and it shows. No atmosphere AND empty tables . Wow never ever saw this before. Food was mediocre. No steak and venison pie and no gammon so had to have a second choice. Safe to say we won’t be back

We sat near the window, so we had a harbour view, which was as well as the service was a little slow, but the food was well worth waiting for.

Lovely views over the harbour, particularly in the beer garden. Good choice of beers in main bar, less so in Beer garden but very convenient being able to order from outside.

A bit of a shaky start but they got there in the end. Food was excellent. The only real downside is the price of the wine. Seems to be the same all over Whitby. Definitely recommend

Food was OK, I had venison and steak pie and chips.. With veg.. Veg was raw, i couldn't cut it with the knife, bit disappointed to be honest.. Staff were lovely tho, and the atmosphere was nice.. Would return, but maybe just for a drink..

Nice sunny spot on an evening watching the boat racing...err ok having a pint of Neckoil whilst looking up every now and again for the shouting. Serving hatch saving the long walk back up to the bar.

Iwould not ever eat at this place again,we waited three quater of an hour,fish and chips came the fish was discusting ,it was tough batter no fish in itand couldnt cut the fish the pease where hard suppose to be mushy,i paid £28 for meal ,would have paid £5 for it all i got was srry about that

Last meal of our weekend away had starters and main meals only,starters were good not brilliant,mains meals shocking, uncooked vegetables and well over seasoned to try to compensate,burger buns that wet you couldn't pick up,grizzle in chicken breast and semi cooked chips. Overall very disappointed only offer a dessert or a drink as compensation and staff mentioning earlier in the evening that they were hung over from previous nights antic's. Well done duke of York you've lost future customers,oh and your toilets are disgusting

We ate here while visiting Whitby and whilst I have no problem with chips it was nice to see a choice of cooked potatoes. I ordered a lamb shank which was advertised as coming with garlic mash however they had run out but did cook new potatoes instead. The meal was lovely and I would definitely eat here again.

This is a perfect place to stay. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. Staff are lovely food is nice and I'm a fussy eater. Beautiful views and the room is perfect. Thank you for being so welcoming. I will definitely come back here.

Brilliant pub with an amazing view of Whitby Harbour. Plenty of outdoor seating on the shoreline. Amazing customer service from friendly helpful staff and a great place to spend your time on Whitby.

I spent 3 nights here. Absolutely wonderful. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was fantastic and the views, well they speak for themselves. I will definitely be back. Didn't want to leave.

Great location overlooking the harbour but I was screwed outta £6 for fruit juice and toast breakfast. Staff were complaining about their workload and that they were "knackered already" for me to hear and the service is so slow. Toilets are filthy.

Came here yesterday with my mum for a few drinks and it was lovely. Very relaxed atmosphere, drinks were great value and the staff were helpful and attentive. They even let me paint as long as I didn't get any mess on the table 😅

Fithy windows - couldn't see the view. The first 3 dishes we ordered were not available. Dirty tables -had to ask to be wiped. Waited over half an hour for our food. Chicken was overcooked and tough. Beef very salty. Recommend that the chef tastes the meals that are coming out of the kitchen. So many good pubs in Whitby. Don't bother with this one.

Someone needs to tell the young barmaid her job is to serve customers not talk to her fellow barstaff

Signs all over the pub advertising their ‘beer garden’, only to be told we were not allowed in the beer garden when we went to the beer garden. A member of staff came out twice in quick succession telling us we cannot drink there because it’s not their beer garden, as it’s next doors. Turns out next door is owned by the very same company - and the beer garden is advertised in BOTH pubs. Go figure. At the risk of sounding petty over a beer garden misunderstanding - the staff were incredibly rude in their delivery, like we’d committed the greatest of sins. So, we headed back up to the pub to sit on THEIR outside seating, only to be told we couldn’t sit there either - they couldn’t wait to tell us as they pretty much sprinted outside the pub to inform us again. Clearly the footfall lets the staff get away with treating their patrons with utter contempt. Won’t be back - and do us all a favour and remove your beer garden signage in your own pub when we can’t sit out there any way.

Awful meal and service, I booked a table for 6, we arrived to a table for 5 ! The place was very crammed! Didn't have 2 of the meals we ordered, waited almost an hour for food. When it came, vegetables were cold, peas were like bullets and the veggie sausages were disgusting. The deserts all came differently than advertised on the menu. We had to pay before we had our food so couldn't even complain and not pay for a meal, and they were so busy it would have took them ages to rectify. Won't be going back at all.

Gutted really, we haven't been here for years and were looking forward to a nice meal. The music playlist is awful, lurching from dance music to God knows what, not conducive for a relaxing meal. I ordered 3 meals and they forgot to put one through. Then the meal wasn't even available that day so we had to wait for over an hour for the food. When it came in fairness the pies were lovely along with the lamb shank. Unfortunately the supposed roast veg was appalling, chewy and not cooked or roasted really with no broccoli even though it was supposed to be on the plate. The food was not cheap and at over £7 for a pint and £8.65 for a medium glass of wine not the best experience. Sorry Duke Of York, not the review you wanted but you could do with changing things a bit. Good luck.

Had Ribeye steak could smell it was not good when it arrived had a bite and spat it out tasted sour spent the next 20 minutes arguing about refund was offered another meal but once you have been put off you don’t want something else offered a free drink instead of a refund the wife’s hunters chicken was swimming in water finally got a refund on the steak but that was that meal ruined will never go back

We visit here for food most times when we come to Whitby. It used to be homemade pub grub but it's more like chain pub food now. The food is still decent but we preferred it before. The staff are very friendly.

Great outdoor seating area which is new with superb sea views. Personally would say best view in town. Drinks and atmosphere faultless. Issue with our meal which the manager correctly faulted with no complaints.

Stayed here 3 nights and had a great stay. All staff very friendly and provided excellent service. Breakfast was served piping hot with good quality produce.

Service was not good on a visit back on April 1st. It took about 45 mins for our food to come out. We then tried ordering desserts and coffees, waited at least another half hour, I went to the bar to ask what was happening and it very much seemed like they’d forgotten about us. The coffees were promptly made and then we were told one of the puddings wasn’t available - completely unacceptable that we were told half an hour after ordering. We cancelled the puddings as it was taking too long. I would not eat here again.

We are coming to this place every time we visit Whitby. Amazing place.

Popular pub situated near the steps up to Whitby Abbey good choice of food/No Sunday lunch but can get very busy at times. Family friendly and has accommodation , recently revamped.Great sea views from the bar area.

Visited on Saturday May 11th, 6:30pm. On arrival we sat down at an empty table and ordered via the app, only to be told a few minutes later that our table (17) was needed for a reservation in 30min but "...someone forgot to put a reserved sign on it" and we would need to leave. We explained that we had just ordered food, the waitress went to talk to someone, and nothing else was said either confirming that we had only got 30min or letting us know alternative arrangements had been made and we could stay longer. A few minutes after receiving our food the same staff member came over with another meal to tell one of our party that they had been served the wrong burger and she would have to take it back to swap the burgers over in the kitchen (having realised that there was already sauce on the plate at our table plus chips had been started, so she couldn't just swap the entire dish). We explained clearly several times that the burger had been touched/picked up and shouldn't be served to another customer, the reply was "it's ok I'm not going to tell them". If it was a joke it was a very inappropriate one, but given her tone and the fact that same (or absolutely identical) burger was delivered to the next table when our correct burger arrived, we are highly skeptical! We risked finishing our meal and suffered no ill effects, but the fact that something like that was even mentioned put us off coming back or recommending the place. A shame as the food was decent for seaside "pub grub". More staff training needed, either on appropriate customer interaction, basic food hygiene, or both.

Nice friendly staff, food was served promptly, hot and excellent value, we enjoyed a sharing platter which was about £16 for 2 - we enjoyed it so returned for tea the following day to watch the football play offs

1 star for actually letting us in. Food was dismal. Ladies facilities were awful. Won't be back.

Just returned from a bank holiday stay with my family stayed in room 8 with fantastic views, The staff was so helpful and welcoming, Room was spacious with all the amenities and comfortable beds, breakfast was cooked to perfection with plenty of choice, definitely recommend and will stay again. Thank you

My Girlfriend and I stayed here for the weekend. The room was nice and clean and the views across the harbour were amazing. It was quite noisy on both mornings at around 430am, but this didn't bother us too much. We found the staff were really friendly and helpful. The not so good bit was the food. The breakfast was a massive let down; the bacon had loads of black crispy bits on and didn't taste nice at all. We left most of it. We would stay here again but wouldn't eat here.

Do not visit here if you have babies, infants, or need an accessible toilets. We were shocked to discover that there weren't any changing facilities for our baby, when we enquired if there was anywhere private we could use. We were told the bathroom floor .... ? Disgusting. Then the poor customer service. A very rude older lady behind the bar(didn't catch her name) with short blonde hair got our order wrong, after serving 3 people who joined the que after us. When we explained our drinks weren't what we asked for, she rolled her eyes and huffed at us. Her reponse, can't you just have these? Can say without any doubt we won't be revisiting.

Popped in for a drink. Took ages to get served and it was dead in there at 2pm on a Wednesday. Expensive. £10 for a pint of Peroni and a coke. The view was nice though.

We stayed here 2 weeks ago, the location is great, the room decent & the view unsurpassed, unfortunately, we were in Room 1, so paid for the View, but the people in Room 3 directly above must've had a dog & were tramping around all night, especially around 05.00 - 07.00, not something you need after a day/night out. The sound insulation is non-existant, which is a massive shame because the room was not cheap. On the plus side, the breakfast was decent. Would I stay again, yes I would, would I pay a premium for Room 1, no I wouldn't!

We had a lovely meal here - I had fish in batter, chunky chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a side order of sweet potato fries - all delicious. Robert, who served us, went out of his way to get some soya milk to make me a hot chocolate, which just hit the spot on a cold, windy day! All in all, I would thoroughly recommend going to the Duke of York in Whitby - excellent food and customer service, plus a lovely view from the bay windows overlooking Whitby harbour.
